The Sacrament of the Sick: “Are there any among you who are sick?” We find this question in the Bible, in the Letter of Saint James. After posing the question, Saint James continues: that the sick “are to call the priests of the Church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.” The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a powerful gift offered to those who are sick, those preparing for surgery and those who are ad-vanced in years. No longer called Extreme Unction or the “Last Rites” and administered only near the time of death, I encourage you to ask for this Sacrament before you go to the hospital or face surgery or medical tests. The Lord wishes to strengthen you with his love and grace.

The Funeral Pall: The Catholic Funeral Mass begins by
sprinkling the coffin with holy water and covering it with
a large white cloth recalling the person’s Baptism. The
large white cloth is called a Funeral Pall and signifies the
Baptism garment, which, with the help of family and
friends we are to “bring unstained into the everlasting life
of heaven.” We have recently purchased two new Funer-
al Palls (one for Nativity and one for Saint Ann). There is
still time if you would like to “memorialize” one of
them. The cost is $400.00 each. An appropriate memori-
al label would be sewn into the Funeral Pall memorializ-
ing your loved one(s). Thank you for your consideration.
20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 16, 2015
Dear Parishioners,
August is my favorite month of the year, without a question. Maybe it stems from childhood, when this was our family vacation time, often gathering with friends down on Cape Cod. Maybe it was the fact that, at least when I was a kid, school never began before September, so the days of August were the last vestiges of summer freedom. Maybe it is because the weather is warm during the day and cooler at night. Maybe it is because of the sweet smell that hangs in the air many days, the fact that everything is in full bloom, that the tomatoes we have been nursing since the spring are finally ripening... whatever it is, I just like this time of the year best.
As a priest, I have also enjoyed during this time of the year the summer Gospels. Long stretches of stories and sermons and parables have carried us through these summer months and this weekend Jesus’ long discourse on the Bread of Life continues. For John’s community, this lengthy section of his Gospel is his Eucharist. Although you won’t find a tradi-tional institution narrative in the Fourth Gospel (Jesus takes bread and says, “This is my Body,” etc…), for John it is all about understanding the Eucharist as the Bread of Life – Jesus giving us his very Body and Blood as food and drink that nourishes us unto eternal life. This is strongly connected to our call to serve one another, as John is the only Gos-pel to include the Washing of the Feet as part of this narrative. Eating and drinking, then, are directly connected to serving, humbly, the needs of our brothers and sisters. This takes a ritual meal that is so meaningful, in and of itself, and invites us to see its intimate connection with the ongoing action of Christ reaching out to the needy. It is a living sign, that we participate in. This week, wherever your travels take you, take with you this simple bond of eating, drinking and serving. If we do this well, many more will come to know the joy that is ours.
Summer blessings, Fr. Tim Harrison Pastor
