. Juae 27, t o August 1, 1969, the squadron sent a detachment of two
C-1A a i r c r a f t onboard the USS HORNET (CVS-12) t o a s s i s t i n the Apollo
Eleven recovery.
5 . August 20, 1969, the squadroa was called unon, and res~omded t o a
request t o provide an a i r l i f t r e l i e f t o victims of Hurricane "Camille."
6. October 27 t o December 3, 1969, the squadroa sent three C-1.A a i r c r a f t
as a detachmert onboard the USS HORNET (CVS-12) t o a s s i s t i.n the Apollo
Twelve recovery.
7. October 11 t o December 24, 1969, C - l A a i r c r a f t and p i lo ts were sent
t o Danang, Republic of Viet Nam, t o supplement the "CODu a i r c r a f t
shortage due t o the grouading of the C-2A a i rcraf t .

Califorria, with the squadron under the operational control amd admini-
s t r a t i a , commard of COMNAVAIRPAC . More spec i f ical ly , the squadroal s
o ~ e r a t i o n s are directed and conducted throuah NAEOESTPAC, who i s respor-
s ib le f o r the scheduliae and co-ordinatimg of t a c t i c a l suaport f l i g h t s in
the Eastern Pacific . Comma~diag Officers fo r the year were CDR T. M. BOGART, IJSN, who was
relieved by CDR L. A. SCHOELEN, USN, a t change of commaad ceremonies on
29 May 1969. Biographies of both CDR BOGART and CDR SCHOELEN are imcluded
i n the documertary amnexes. CDR SCHOELEN remained the Commanding Officer
f o r the r e s t of the p a r .
CDR E. J. RIVARD, USN, relieved CDR W.P. CALHOIJH, USN, as squadrota
Executive Officer on 21 April 1960 aad he r a i n e d Executive Officer
fo r the duration of the year. Operatiors were uader the direction of
CDR , USNR, throughout the year.
The missioa of the squadror, remained uachaaged, that is: t o provide
ae r i a l l og i s t i c s u p ~ o r t for Fleet Units and squadrons throughout the
contimental Uraited States, a d t o f l y p r io r i ty personnel, mail, aad
material from shore bases to the a i r c r a f t car r ie rs of the Pacific Fleet.
The souadron used two models of a i r c r a f t t o carry out i ts aission: the
Convair C-131 "Samaritan", aad t h e Gmvmnara C- lA "Trader."
The C-lA is used for Carrier Omboard Delivery (COD) missions, haviag
been the standard Navy WCodH a i r c r a f t fo r mom t h a ten pars. Ths C - U
carriea a load of 3,500 pounds of cargo, or up t o eight passengers, with
a crew of t h e . Special ~asignraents and daplsynlsnts for VR-30,s C-Uts
and t h e i r c ~ w s in 1969 included ths following:
1. 27 June 1969 t o 1 Auguclt 1969 -- a two plane detachment was assign-
ad onboard the USS HORNET (CVS-12) fo r tb Apollo Slewn recoverg. Ths
detachmnt consisted of four aviators and six enl is ted mchsmics/cmwslan.
The mission of the Apollo Eleven detachment was t o transport moon sampbs
and astronaut biological samples f r o m the HORNET t o Johnstone Island and
Hawaii a f t e r the recovary. A secondary mission uaa t o transport VIP White
Home personnel md ADM John S. McClrin, CINCPAC, who wema pmsent for the
re covary.
2. 27 October t o 3 Dscelaber 1969 -- a three plane detachmsnt was again
sent onboard the HORNET f o r ths Apollo Twslvs recovery. Tbe Apollo Twelve
detachmntts mission was essent ia l ly the spras a8 t ha t of thd Apollo D a n
detachmnt, i.e. transportation of moon samples and astronaut biological
samples from the HORNET t o Samoa after the recovery, plus VIP transportation
of ADM John S. McCain, CINCPAC. The Apollo Twelve detachment consisted of
six aviators and seven enl is tad support-personnel.
3 11 October t o 24 Deasrnber 1969, VR-30 urn called upon t o send two of
its C-1A a i rc ra f t and a cuarulative t o t a l of s i x p i lo t s t o Danang, Republic of
ViQt Warn, t o provide the aircraf't a r r r i e r s on nYankee Stationn with wCODn
service due t o the grounding of the C-2A. The first t h m pilots involved in
th i s requirement were given very ahort notice pr ior t o t h e i r departure f o r
Danang .
The second group of three VR-30 p i lo t s relieved the i n i t i a l group approx-
i m t e l y six weeks rafter the Danang "CODn detachment (under VC-5) was
ini t ia ted. The second group then aided i n tb training of VRC-50 p i lo t s
i n the C - U a i r c ra f t , with VRC-9 assuming control of the detachmnt short ly
after the beginning of 1970. Tha p i lo t s involved i n the Danang detachmnt
were : LCDR /1310 LCDR /1310 LCDR /1315 LT /1310 LT /1315 LTJG /1310
The C-131 has ths capacity t o carry forty-four passengers with baggage,
o r up t o 9,000 pounds cargo. Special assignments f o r the C-131 i n 1969 have
included numrous medical evacuation f l igh t s t o both c iv i l ian and military
fields. The C-131 waa also instrumental i n the rapid responae transportation
of r e l i e f supplies for the v i c t i m of hurricane RCpslillew along th Gulf Coast
on August 20th and 21st, A969. Ths squadron also operated two "VIP" config-
ured C-131's throughout the year for executive and VIP transportation.
Operational s t a t i s t i c s fo r numbgr of hours flown, cargo and baggage car-
r ied are included i n the documentary annems. The operation of both models
of squadron a i r c ra f t waa carried out sa t i s fac tor i ly despite obsolescewe and
maintenance-supply drawbacks. The a i rc ra f t parts supply work force was not
1-8 enough t o perform ;ill assigned tasks expeditiously, plus t h y were
hampered by suply's limited funds and i nab i l i ty t o stock all necessary parts.
Also, because of the age of VR-30's a i rcraf t , the fai lurn rate of parts was
re la t ive ly high, adding t o th6 already existant supply shortcomings.
In the area of camunity relations, t h e squadron Public Affaira Office
conducted twenty-nim tours of the squadron area and a i rc ra f t for outs id^
groups. The Public Affaira Office also sent out more than sixty-five news
releases concernbg the squadron, its personnel, and major evbnts.
Rstention and re-enlistment rates f o r 1969 we= as follows: First term
enlistees: of seventeen e l ig ib le one re-enlistlaent fo r a 6% average. For
el igible career personnel the ra te w a s 679, eight out of twelve eligible
m-enliatad.
Special. t ra ining conducted by the squadron included a training program
i n the C-1A a i r c r a f t f o r off icers on TAD from Pacific Fleet car r ie rs and
other units. !Phi8 program was i n i t i a t e d (with reference to COMNAVBIRPACINST
3740.11 ser ies of 31 July 1969) aa a familiarization and standardization
program i n tb C-lA t o cut down on Pacific Flnet acaidsnts f o r p i lo t s as-
signed t o fly ship and a ta f f C-Uts i n the Pacif'ic. During 1969 a total. of
eleven p i lo ts wrsra trained i n the VR-30 RTADn C-lA training program.
On the Naval. A i r S ta t ion the squadron was act ive i n both char i table
and a t h l e t i c filnctions . I n a th l e t i c s , t h e squadron continued its pol icy
of maximum par t i c ipa t ion i n a l l intramural spor ts . A s a r e s u l t of i t s
a t h l e t i c program the squadron ranked second i n the s t a t i o n ' s Captain's
Cup competition f o r the year and f i r s t i n basketbal l and swimming. 811-30
stood secord i n golf , bowling, and handball, and t h i r d i n football . In
community a f f a i r s , the aquadron contributed $2112.60 t o the Combined
Federal Campaign, which represents a par t i c ipa t ion by 70% of squadron
pcr~onne l . Families of personnel attached t o VR-30 dist inguished t h e m -
se lves by winning over m h i r d of the a w a r a presented f o r the s t a t i o n s
"Home of the Month."
The Lbgal developements i n 1969 were many and varied. A legal aa-
siatance program was i n i t i a t e d with one f i l l - t i m en l i s t ed man i n charge
of the program. The l e g a l assistance program covemd such topics as:
voting, w i l l , leases, contracts , t x x a s , insu.rance, auto re gis t ra t ion , family-
budgeting e t c . The squadron had one General Court-Martial, one Special
Court-Martial and twqnty cases of Non-Judicial Punishment.
1. Biography of Commander T. M. BOGART:
Upon assuming cormnurd of VR-30 on 2 Apri l 1968, CDR BOGART b c m the
squadron's Commanding Off icer . CDR BOGART began his mil i t a ry career i n July 1 9 b by e n l i s t i n g i n the
U . S. Army Air Corps, ae rv i rg as a f l i g h t engineer u n t i l November 1945.
With the close of World War 11, CDR BOGART lef t the service t o a t t end San
Jose S t a t e College , graduating with a B.A. degree i n 1948.
CDR BOGART entared t he Aviation Training Program a t Pensacola, Florida,
as an o f f i ce r student. After graduation and designation as a Naval Aviator,
he joined VS-23 i n 1950. He subsequently served a tour of duty as an ASW
ins t ruc tor at FAETUPhC and as a f l i g h t i n s t ruc to r t r t Pensacola, Florida. In
1956 CDR BOGUZT reported t o VRF-32 followsd by a ae r i e s of aqud ron as-
s ignmnts i n l i g h t at tack, and CRAW in s t ruc to r duty i n VA-146 and vA-126
a t NAS Miramar.
CDR BOGART served on the s t a f f s of COMJTWINGPAC and COMNAV15IRPAC aa
the A i r T a r g e t s Officer commncing i n 1963 u n t i l report ing aboard the USS
VALLEY FORGE: (LPH-8) as the Ueapons Off icer from November 1965 t o January
1967. I n January 1967, CDR BOGART reported t o VRF-32 as the Executive
Officer. A f t e r h i8 t ou r as Colruaanding 0ff"icer of VR-30, CDR BOGART was
ass igmd t o ths o f f i c e of the C b f of Naval. Operations.
2. Bwgraphy of Commander L. A. SCHOEIEN:
CDR SCHOEIJ3N en l i s t ad i n ths U. S . Navy as an a i m r e c r u i t under the
Holloway Aviation Midshipman Program i n May 1946, and attended Sa in t Haryts
Collcgc u n t i l en te r ing P l igh t t ra in ing i n 1948 pa an Aviation Midshipman.
After graduation and &signation as a Naval Aviator, he reported t o VS-23
i n 1950 where ha served u n t i l 1953. After completing a tour aa a flighs
instructor a t Kingsville , Zexos, CDR SCHOEIElJ attended the University of
California, Loa hngeles, graduating with a B.S. degrees i n 1957.
CDR SCHOELRN then attended the Naval Air Intelligence School and aub-
sequently served aa Air Intelligence Officer aboard tb USS RANDOLPH
(CVA-ls), followed by duty Kith VS-30, VS-27, and W-24.
CDR SCHOEIJaa was rsaigned duty with the Naval. Air Developarant Center,
Johnsville, Pennsylvania from 1962 t o 1964, a d attended th4 Armd Force8
Staf f College, Norfolk, Virginia, graduating in Junury 1965, He then
served as Offiar-in-Charge of the Nava A i r Logistic Control Offlce,
Europe Representative, i n Naples, I ta ly , from 1965 to 1966. From 1966 to
1967, CDR SCHOEWN established a Naval A i r Logistic Control Office a t Rota,
Spain, followed by duty at! Aircraft Maintenance Officer, VR-24, a lso i n
Rota, Spain, CDR SCH0BZF:N assumed tha command of VR-30 on 29 May, 1969.
