THANK YOU! Early this year the Sisters of the Good Samaritan of the Order of St Benedict left Marrickville after living or working in the area for 131 years. The Sisters first came to Marrickville in 1887. They walked each day - rain, hail or shine, from their convent near Central Station to teach at St Brigid’s School. In July 1892 they moved into rented accommodation at 211 Illawarra Rd; then in 1901, with the assistance of the Passionist Fathers, they moved to Malakoff Towers, 101 Despointes St. It was here that the Co-foundress of the Good Samaritan Sisters, Mother Scholastica Gibbons, a Sister of Charity, died on 15th October 1901. In 1960 a new Convent was built in Despointes St and Malakoff Towers was demolished. When the Sisters moved out in the 1990s this building became the Marrickville Police Local Area Command. The Sisters recognized the importance of education in enabling people to improve their situa- tions, and many hundreds of students have been educated by them in St Brigid’s Primary and Infants school, St Brigid’s College and Casimir College…... Marrickville also developed a reputation for excellence in music. While continuing to teach, the Sisters also provided pastoral care for many families, and a home for refugee students in Garners Ave and later at 61 Pile St. There have always been strong partnerships with the De La Salle Brothers and the Passionist Community, and with the people of the area, creating deep and lasting sense of com- munity and family—Marrickville was more than a parish or a suburb—it was a home.

The Sisters recognized the importance of education in enabling people to improve their situa-tions, and many hundreds of students have been educated by them in St Brigid’s Primary and Infants school, St Brigid’s College and Casimir College…...

Marrickville also developed a reputation for excellence in music. Sr Gabrielle Healey, Brother Florence and Fr Stani-slaus Cross Cp promoted liturgical music as part of the litur-gical renewal of the Catholic Church during the 1950s & 1960s. For a number of years they produced a Christmas pageant in Hyde Park, supported by the wonderful work of Mrs Connie Cloran…..

While continuing to teach, the Sisters also provided pastoral care for many families, and a home for refugee students in Garners Ave and later at 61 Pile St.

There have always been strong partnerships with the De La Salle Brothers and the Passionist Community, and with the people of the area, creating deep and lasting sense of com-munity and family—Marrickville was more than a parish or a suburb—it was a home.

Over 131 years, 294 Sisters lived or ministered in Marrick-ville, some of them on two or more occasions.

Sr Elizabeth Delaney SGS

THANK YOU to each and everyone of them.

REFLECTION “You Cannot be the Slave both of God and of Money”

The Gospel is the story of a man looking after his family when he was losing a job. He let some debtors off the interest on a bill owed to his master so that they would look after him later.

Jesus doesn’t recommend dishonesty but recommends that we be as concerned for good-ness as he was for dishonesty. The children of the world are clever. Could we be as enthu-siastic?

The parable is a Jesus’ gentle humorous way of saying that we have to deal with life as it is, and it would be great that we would be as passionate in the cause of good as this man was in looking after himself! Jesus uses this situation to teach us a lesson about money and God; he uses many situations to widen our view of God who is total love, total mercy and total forgiveness. Let’s leave judgment to him and widen the compassion of our hearts.

The parable makes us think that we get into messy situations, and this man was trying to do his best. Probably letting the debtors off the huge interest on what was owed, and which had been got in corrupt dealings! God is bigger than any of our small laws and rituals.

The message as well is to use the money in the service of God, “tainted though it is”. We know how our wealth and prosperity can lead to corruption or greed, or to improving the lives of others. As with all we have, all is gift and to be used for the common good.
