Notice Regarding School Buses In 2011 Ritchies Transport Holdings Ltd, the operators of the school bus runs in the Milton area, have advised us that as from the start of 2011 they will be charging ineligible students who are being carried on their buses. This charge will be $1 per trip which will mean $2 per day if a return trip is taken. A ticket system will operate and they can be brought from the driver. Alternatively money can be paid directly to the driver as the service is used. No payment, no travel. Eligible students will have priority of travel. An ineligible student is one who catches the bus at a place that is not in the Ministry of Education entitlement zone. The Ministry of Education have fact sheets that explain eligibility plus other aspects. The site is:

Jamboree 2011 SOS (South Otago Scouts) included Clinton, Balclutha, and of course Milton. Three Scouts went from Milton to this year’s Scout Jamboree at Mystery Creek, Hamilton. They were Matthew Roxburgh, Ollie Gordon-Glassford and myself. I had been to the Christchurch Jamboree in 07/08, but this one was much better. It was sunny all the time we were away. There were people from all over the place, Australia, Cook Islands, Samoa, UK, and even Panama. The activities were awesome, ranging from the traditional Xtend - building stuff with ropes and wood like campsites and bivouac’s. To the fast, Xhaust - riding bikes, motor scooters and mountain boards. Then there was the Mud - Challenge Valley which was going through this seriously muddy stream under rope nets and doing climbing to name just a few activities. If you had the morning or afternoon off there were no shortage of places to go such as the trading post to trade badges, the Fuze air base (the radio station for the jamboree), to play Ping-pong, table soccer or just hang around. The “Showers” were fun they were 4 meter long colander things that squirted out water that you walked through to cool off with your clothes on really hot days, really refreshing! Or, you could just walk around the huge site and see all the other Campsites. We had a great time but we couldn’t have done it without the help from Milton Rotary and Lions Club, the people who bought tickets for the raffles and the firewood, Raymond Smith (our Scout Leader) and the parents.

Milton Senior Citizens Report Last Friday the Club commenced its New Year’s programme with a visit to Kaitangata. Local historian and authoress Irene Sutton gave us a detailed history of the area prior to an excellent meal at the Bridge Tavern. Irene told us of a cliff of coal discovered on the coast by early surveyor Fredrick Tucker, of subsequent mining operations over the decades and other business in Kaitangata over the years. A visit followed to the Town’s Museum in the former Scout Hall. The Museum’s entrance replicates the entrance to a coal mine, inside only a visit to this asset to the town can one appreciate its contents. The return trip home took us over the bridge to Inch Clutha and back over the Stirling bridge and home. Notable events of day included Vice President Moira welcoming to our group Marion and Alistair McGuigan and to acknowledge the Golden Wedding of Jennifer and Colin Smith. The days raffle was won by Joan Murray. Coming Events 4th February - Meet at Taylor Park at 2pm, please bring a cup and chair 18th March - Finger Lunch prior to AGM “Experience is a comb life gives you after you lose your hair.”

Toy Library Report
We trust that everyone had a fantastic Christmas and enjoyed the holiday season, we look forward to
seeing everyone back at the Toy Library.
So many people really wanted this but it was Glenda Bateup who was the lucky winner of the playhouse,
and we trust her 2 children and family are having a fantastic time playing with this. We are always
looking for fundraising opportunities, and we were lucky enough to have the generosity of the following
to complete this playhouse project: Marty Clark (builder) who designed and built the playhouse, Calder
Stewart Industries for the materials, Gary Carr for materials, South Otago Windows and Doors for the
windows, Toko Trailers for the use of a trailer and their yard for display. These guys were all just
awesome and showed us great support. With such great success, we raised over $1600, with our
Christmas Playhouse Raffle we will soon be able to purchase toys for all to use. So members give us
any ideas and look out for new toys coming!!! Ruth Robins was the lucky winner of the Christmas
Hamper.
The year 2011 brings a lot of new exciting changes for the Toy Library. We have rearranged the
premise to fit in as many toys, especially with all of the news ones, as we can. The committee has been
working very hard over the Christmas period to stocktake all of the toys, thoroughly clean and sterilise all
equipment/ toys (even though this is also done after use), clear out all not-used and broken toys, while
completing a new detailed list of every toy we have for you to hire. There are around 400 toys. The
Tokomairiro Toy library has about 40 families, run by a small committee, and we are always working
very hard to have new exciting equipment for you to use. In the year 2010 we managed to purchase 26 new toys and 16 DVD’s. This is all
through the hard work of fundraising and some grants that is why we need and appreciate the small commitment of members to assist us at
these times. We have a new system for membership, this is an annual fee, for about the price of one toy you get to use many toys for a whole
year and have the advantage of variety! This fee, $50, will be due in February and is to be paid to the Toy Librarian. We have increased the
hire of toys to 3 toys per family for 2 weeks at a time. We also have a new cell phone number for anyone to contact the Toy Librarian about
any details, new membership etc. The hours have also changed, due to many requests for an afternoon time: Tuesdays 2.30-3.30 and
Saturdays 10.00-11.00, take note of these changes. The Toy Library is now open. So please contact us for any more details, or come in and
talk to Jean at the Toy Library. We are always working hard to provide a valued service for the community to use. Ph: 022 079 9375.

Tokomairiro Early Learning
Centre Our new centre is now just one week away from opening with an expected starting date of Monday January 31st. It has been a hive of activity in recent days as renovations are undertaken and final preparations for opening are carried out. Several large cartons have also arrived containing our new equipment and it has been very exciting unpacking these and deciding where it is all going to go. The outdoor area is also taking shape with the addition of a bike track and a sand pit. The centre is situated at 71 Spenser Street and the hours of opening will be 6.45am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday for children aged from birth to five years. We offer 20 hours free ECE for all three and four year olds and with high income thresholds for WINZ subsidies, the majority of families in the area would be able to attend for no cost at all. Lynne, our centre manager is currently in the process of finalising enrolments and would welcome any enquiries from families who would be interested in enrolling their child/children. For any enrolment enquiries please phone 417 8180 during normal business hours. We would love to hear from you.
Tokomairiro Women’s Group The February meeting to T.W.G will be held at the White Horse Inn on Tuesday February 1st, 2011 at 6.15pm. We will hold an informal discussion on the planning of events and speakers for the coming year. Everyone is very welcome to come to this meeting to see what we can offer. Cost for this meeting is $20.00 (due to increased costs at the venue). Please telephone Margaret Stirling on 417 4051 by 8pm on Saturday 29th January if you wish to attend. All welcome.
Milton Garden Club On Monday December 13th, forty plus members and guests, travelled to Mosgiel, for our last outing for the year. First stop was the garden of Walter and Lyn Gibson in Mosgiel. This was a garden full of treasures. Many of the more rare native plants and shrubs were in flower and all seemed to be quite at home in their surroundings. Colourful borders of perennials and shrubs, rock and stones where also a feature, and a well cared for vegetable garden all made this a special garden to visit. We travelled to J Tee’s at East Taieri for our Christmas luncheon. We all enjoyed a lovely meal in this lovely setting, very relaxing and sociable. After our meal Jenni McIntosh and Sheila Steel entertained us with a humorous skit as Mrs Daffodil and Mrs Daisy. The giving and receiving of gifts and the drawing of the multi draw raffle, (where ten members were lucky winners) concluded a super day out and a lovely way to finish a busy and entertaining year. Congratulations to Frances Grant for winning the Christmas cake raffle. On Monday February 14th members are visiting gardens in the Clinton area. Please bring lunch and drinks etc. Bus leaves Elizabeth Street at 9.30am. Please telephone Val 417 7213.
