In brief

– Space weather (SWx) related missions:1. “Sich-2” EO S/C with “Potential” experiment will be launched in July 20112. “Spektr-R” S/C will be launched in the end of July 20113. “Chibis-M” S/C will be launched in October 20114. “Environment” instrument suite will be delivered to the ISS in 20125. “Microsat” S/C with “Ionosat-Micro” experiment will be launched in 20136. “Resonance” S/C constellation will be launched in 20147. The launch of “Ionosat” S/C constellation was postponed till 2015-2017

– Other launches this year:1. “Phobos-Ground” S/C will be launched in October-November 2011

– 2 FP7 SWx projects with Ukrainian participation have officially started– An “I love my Sun” event was held in Ukraine for the first time– 3 SWx meetings were held in Ukraine and 4 more will be held this year– The National Space Agency of Ukraine (NSAU) was renamed into State

Space Agency of Ukraine (SSAU); most subordinate institutions still have their old names (with NSAU)

Microsat/Ionosat-Micro

“Ionosat-Micro” is the forerunner project with the aim to test the “Ionosat” mission scientific ideas and preliminary collection of related space data. It is scheduled for launch in 2013 onboard Ukrainian microsatellite “Microsat”.Tentative “Microsat” orbit is polar LEO, ~500 km (TBC).Project goals:

– Spatial and temporal structure and global distribution of inhomogeneities in neutral atmosphere and ionosphere;

– Global structure and dynamics of quasi-stationary electric currents, electric and magnetic fields;

– Wave structures and turbulences at different spatial and temporal scales;

– Synchronous experiments with ground support facilities – both active and passive ones.

I love my Sun

An “I love my Sun” event was organised by Space Research Institute in collaboration with Main Astronomical Observatory and Kyiv Planetarium in April 2011 in one of public schools in Kyiv.6 junior classes attended the lecture (about 180 children). The children were very enthusiastic.Then, an additional lecture on geomagnetism was given for senior classes (about 150 children).The experience gained in this event will be used to organise further events.
