R.C.I.A. meets Mondays, 7 p.m. in Conference room of the Grogan Center

One of the biggest hit songs of the Rock Band ‘U-2’ over the past thirty years is their hit song, “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.”

Here is a sample:

I have climbed the highest mountains I have run through the fields Only to be with you Only to be with you

I have run I have crawled I have scaled these city walls These city walls Only to be with you

But I still haven't found What I'm looking for But I still haven't found What I'm looking for…

It is their most requested song over the past thirty years.

The Edge, the lead guitarist, came up with the title of the song. The words of the song came from Bono, the lead singer. Night after night as they played to packed stadiums, Bono sensed an emptiness, a restlessness, in the faces of the audiences they entertained. They were experimenting and ‘drinking’ from ‘different wells’ in their search for something that was lacking in their lives, in their search for meaning. Bono included himself in that search. Their hit song “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for,” seemed to resonate with their packed stadium audiences, and, continues to do so, after thirty years.

“Alfie,” in the theme song from a movie by the same name, put the ‘search question’ this way:

“What’s it all about? Is it just for the moment we live?”

That spirit of restlessness, while intense in our lifetime, is not something unique to our time. It is a perennial question.

We pick it up in the Scriptures in Psalm 62: “O God, you are my God, for you I long; for you my soul is thirsting. My body pines for you like a dry, weary land without water…”

Psalm 63 reiterates the same refrain: “Like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water…thus, have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary ...”

In their search, people are “drinking from a variety of wells.” That’s why, “I still haven’t found what I am looking for.” St. Augustine, a 5th century Easy Rider, a restless soul, took 35 years to discover what he was searching for and concluded, “our hearts are made for God and they cannot rest until they rest in him.” In this, he concurs with psalm 23… Beside restful waters he leads me to revive my drooping spirit.

Some of those searchers are members of your own families, or, close friends or neighbors, or, just work mates, or, schoolmates.

Invite them to come to the R.C.I.A., The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, an overview of what Catholics believe and practice in coming to know who Jesus is. In coming to know who Jesus is, in a personal way, we come to discover who we are.

As Catholics, we have a tendency to wait until someone comes to us – a passive attitude. What Jesus calls us to is a more proactive attitude. He wants us to “go out,” to “reach out,” to “invite” the “searcher” to come to encounter Jesus. Jesus satisfied the deep “thirst” of the Samaritan Woman at Jacob’s Well. Jesus can satisfy a similar deep “thirst” in the hearts of searchers today in the R.C.I.A. Why don’t you invite your friend?

October Respect Life Baby Bottle Campaign

The month of October is a month dedicated to the Respect Life Ministry. One of the ministries undertaken by the Respect Life Committee of the Knights of Columbus is the Baby Bottle Campaign. The K of C Respect Life Committee handed out Baby Bottles last Sunday, October 6th, after all masses.

You were asked to place the Baby Bottles in a prominent place in your homes – like the dining room table – and drop spare change into it on a regular basis throughout the month of October. The K of C will ask you to return the bottles on the final Sunday of October, hopefully, filled to the brim.

The proceeds are used to support “Choices,” an interchurch agency, which supports young girls/women experiencing any kind of stress related pregnancy, locally. Frequently, the reason young girls/women seek out an abortion as a last resort is because they feel that there is no aid or support available locally. “Choices” receive strong support from many churches here in Avon Park. It offers whatever kind of assistance any girl or young woman needs. Please support the Baby Bottle Campaign during October.
