28th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle B) A Sunday Reflection

The young man in today’s gospel shares one of our concerns: “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mk 10:17). And he begins by calling Jesus “good”. Jesus, however, counters by telling him that “No one is good but God alone” (10:18). Coming from Jesus who is God and man, this statement should give us pause. How many times have we considered ourselves “good”, and complained about real or imagined wrongs done to us!

When the young man assures the Lord that he has observed all the commandments from his youth, Mark tells us that Jesus looked at him and loved him (10:21). Just so, Jesus looks at us and loves us, extending to us the same invitation to detach ourselves from everything that might be an obstacle to our union with him.

The passage concludes by saying that the young man “went away sad for he had many possessions” (10:22). Let us pray today that our possessions don’t end up owning us, and that we may place our friendship with the Lord above everything. God bless you!

El joven del evangelio de hoy siente la misma inquietud que nosotros: ”¿qué debo hacer para heredar la vida eterna?” (Mc 10,17). Y comienza llamando a Jesús “bueno”. Jesús a su vez le responde diciendo que “Nadie es bueno fuera de Dios” (10,18). Esta frase de Jesús, que es Dios y hombre verdadero, debería ponernos a pensar. ¿Cuántas veces nos hemos considerado “buenos” y nos hemos quejado por las ofensas reales o imaginadas que hemos recibido?

Cuando el joven asegura al Señor que ha observado todos los mandamientos desde su juventud, Marcos nos dice que Jesús lo miró y lo amó (10,21). De la misma forma Jesús nos mira a cada uno y nos ama, y nos extiende la misma invitación a desprendernos de todo lo que pueda constituir un obstáculo para nuestra unión con él.

El pasaje concluye diciendo que el joven “se marchó triste porque era muy rico” (10,22). Pidamos al Señor hoy que nuestras posesiones no acaben poseyéndonos, y que coloquemos nuestra amistad con él por encima de todo. Que Dios los bendiga.

Reverence for the Eucharist THERE ARE CERTAIN GESTURES that mark us as Catholics, and the genuflection is certainly one of them. That brief bending of one knee is rarely used in everyday life. Yet for Catholics it’s an instinctive motion.

[R]eservation and reverence [of the Eucharist] were hallmarks of the Church’s eucharistic practice, from the earliest years and in lands as far flung as Rome and North Africa…. They knew it then, as we know it today: Jesus is really present in the Blessed Sacrament—body, blood, soul, and divinity. That presence is lasting. And if it is lasting it should be acknowledged. He must be worshipped…. If, as St. Paul says, “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth” (Phil 2:10), how much more before his bodily presence!

Nowadays, our churches keep their consecrated eucharistic hosts in a structure called a tabernacle…. According to Church law, a tabernacle should be “immovable, made of solid or opaque material, and locked so that the danger of profanation may be entirely avoided.” “The tabernacle should be in a place that is conspicuous, suitably adorned and conducive to prayer.” It is clear that the Church intends the tabernacle to be a place of divine worship.

So we do what is expected of us. Any time we pass a tabernacle, we make a brief bend of the right knee….It’s a powerful, tacit way to teach the doctrine of the real presence—and it speaks more eloquently and memorably than a hundred catechisms.

Reverencia a la Eucaristía

HAY CIERTOS GESTOS que nos señalan como católicos, y la genuflexión es ciertamente uno de ellos. Ese pequeño doblar la rodilla no se usa casi nunca en la vida diaria. Para los católicos es un movimiento instintivo.

El reservar la Eucaristía y darle reverencia fueron marcas de la práctica de la Iglesia desde los primeros siglos y en lugares tan distantes entre sí como Roma y el norte de África… Sabían entonces, como lo sabemos hoy, que Jesús está realmente presente en el Santísimo Sacramento, con su cuerpo, sangre, alma y divinidad. Esa presencia es duradera; y si lo es, hay que darle reconocimiento. Adorarlo… Si, como dice san Pablo, “al nombre de Jesús toda rodilla se doble, en el cielo, la tierra y el abismo” (Fil 2, 10), ¡cuánto más ante su presencia corporal!

Hoy día nuestras iglesias guardan las hostias consagradas en una estructura llamada tabernáculo o sagrario… Por ley de la Iglesia, el tabernáculo debe ser fijo, construido de un material sólido u opaco, y cerrado para evitar totalmente cualquier riesgo de profanación”. “El tabernáculo deberá colocarse en un lugar visible, debidamente adornado y que conduzca a la oración”. De esto se desprende que la intención de la Iglesia es que el tabernáculo sea un lugar de culto divino.

Y por eso hacemos lo que se espera de nosotros. Siempre que pasamos frente al tabernáculo, doblamos la rodilla derecha… Es una forma tácita y poderosa de enseñar la doctrina de la presencia real, y más elocuente que cien catecismos.

Canonized Today!/¡Canonizado Hoy! POPE ST. PAUL VI (1897-1978) — Giovanni Battista

Montini succeeded St. John XXIII, reigning from June 1963 to his death in 1978. He continued the Second Vatican Council, and at its end in 1965 implemented its numerous reforms, and fostered improved ecumenical relations with Eastern Orthodox and Protestants, which resulted in many historic meetings and agreements.

Ordained to the priesthood in 1920, Montini served in the Holy See's Secretariat of State from 1922 to 1954. Along with Domenico Tardini, he was considered one of the closest and most influential advisors of Pope Pius XII, who in 1954 named him Archbishop of Milan. John XXIII elevated him to the College of Cardinals in 1958.

As Cardinal, Montini helped in preparing Vatican II and participated enthusiastically in its first session. When he was elected pope in June 1963, he immediately decided to continue that Council. He instituted the World Synod of Bishops, decreed a retirement age for bishops and cardinals and increased the number of cardinals significantly giving many countries their first cardinal. Pope Paul died on the Feast of Transfiguration in 1978.

PAPA SAN PABLO VI (1897-1978) — Giovanni Battista Montini fue el sucesor de San Juan XXIII, reinando desde junio de 1963 hasta su muerte en 1978. Continuó las sesiones del Concilio Vaticano II y al final de este implementó sus numerosas reformas y mejoró las relaciones ecuménicas con los Ortodoxos y con las iglesias protestantes, que resultaron en históricas reuniones y acuerdos.

Ordenado sacerdote en 1920, Montini trabajó en la Secretaría de Estado de la Santa Sede entre 1922 y 1954. Se le considera, junto con Domenico Tardini, uno de los consejeros más cercanos e influyentes del Papa Pío XII, quien lo nombró arzobispo de Milán en 1954. Holiness is also parrhesía:… Boldness, enthusiasm, the freedom to speak out, apostolic fervour, all these are included in the

word parrhesía. The Bible also uses this word to describe the freedom of a life open to God and to others.

Let us acknowledge our weakness, but allow Jesus to lay hold of it and send us too on mission. We are weak, yet we hold a treasure that can

enlarge us and make those who receive it better and happier. Boldness and apostolic courage are an essential part of mission.

Complacency is seductive; it tells us that there is no point in trying to change things, that there is nothing we can do, because this is the way

things have always been and yet we always manage to survive. By force of habit we no longer stand up to evil. We “let things be”, or as others have decided they ought to be. Yet let us allow the Lord to rouse us from our torpor, to free us from our inertia. Let us rethink our usual way of doing things; let us open our eyes and ears, and above all our hearts, so as not to be complacent about things as they are, but unsettled by the living and effective

word of the risen Lord. (Nos. 129, 131, 137)

Reconozcamos nuestra fragilidad pero dejemos que Jesús la tome con sus manos y nos lance a la misión. Somos frágiles, pero portadores de un tesoro que nos hace grandes y que puede hacer más buenos y felices a quienes lo reciban. La audacia y el coraje apostólico son constitutivos de la misión.

La costumbre nos seduce y nos dice que no tiene sentido tratar de cambiar algo, que no podemos hacer nada frente a esta situación, que siempre ha sido así y que, sin embargo, sobrevivimos. A causa de ese acostumbrarnos ya no nos enfrentamos al mal y permitimos que las cosas «sean lo que son», o lo que algunos han decidido que sean. Pero dejemos que el Señor venga a despertarnos, a pegarnos un sacudón en nuestra modorra, a liberarnos de la inercia. Desafiemos la costumbre, abramos bien los ojos y los oídos, y sobre todo el corazón, para dejarnos descolocar por lo que sucede a nuestro alrededor y por el grito de la Palabra viva y eficaz del Resucitado. A NOTE TO PARENTS Our Sunday Child Care service during the Sunday morning Masses is now located in the

PreK3 room. This change has been decided in order to enhance security. Our children’s safety is the primary concern of all of us here at St. Hugh and the Archdiocese of Miami. All those who help us with our children, both staff and volunteers, have been fingerprinted and have taken part in Virtus training, as per Archdiocesan guidelines. Lorena Aguirre, who is in charge of the Child Care, supervises every one of the helpers, who are never left alone with the children. Soon we will be implementing a sign in/sign

out policy for greater security. If you have any concern in this regard, please let us know.

en el salón de PreK3. Este cambio se ha decidido para mayor seguridad. La principal preocupación de todos nosotros en St. Hugh y en la Arquidiócesis de Miami es la seguridad y bienestar de nuestros niños. Todos aquellos que trabajan directamente con ellos, tanto staff como voluntarios, han participado en el programa de Virtus y examinado sus huellas digitales conforme a las normas de la Arquidiócesis. The 4th graders presented their Summer reading assignments to their peers in self-selected ways. They were given a choice grid to select the format of the presentation. Some presented a "Wanted" poster, some a song, others a poem, and still others their "Book in a Bag" containing props that related to the story they read. All students presented their projects in class. Everyone enjoyed listening to each other!

Hispanic Heritage Week

Parents, please continue to attend our Sunday Mass and remember to use your blue

envelopes for Mass attendance, even if you

donate online.

This year our students will be

celebrating Hispanic Heritage Day

during our school mass. Each student

will be free to wear a typical attire of a

Hispanic country of your choice, or sport

clothing representing the colors of any

Hispanic country. As part of the

celebration, our annual "Soccer

Tournament" between classes will also

be held.
