Fr. Joe’s Journal El Diario del Padre Joe We begin Catholic schools week today. I re-ceived the blessing of a catholic school education when I was young. Catholic schools remain important to our Church to this day. Area Catholic schools like our own school, Northside Catholic Academy, present challeng-es. It is essential that families attending non-site schools continue to attend and support their local par-ish. I am very grateful to families from our parish who attend our catholic school, Northside Catholic Acade-my. They show great loyalty to our parish. We do help subsidize the school as part of our parish mission. I hope more families are able to take advantage of the great education and formation that our children receive at our school. We have the continued blessing of hav-ing remarkable young people attending our school. We pray for their success. We reflect on the Beatitudes. The Beatitudes are filled with meaning. One of them reminds us there are many paths to the Lord. Each of us strives to live up to the ideals in the beatitudes. We need to use the talents that God has given to serve those in need and worship our Lord through prayer. We have an important meetings coming up. The Parish Council will meet on Monday the 30th at 7:15 pm. We have a number issues we want to dis-cuss including Renew My Church. I thank those who attended our finance committee meeting. I thank all our volunteers who help make the Lord present in our community. We have the blessing of many people who help in our parish ministry. They help is not always visible to all our pa-rishioners. We, for a parish our size, have a remarkable number of volunteers. I thank all of our many volun-teers and our staff who assist them. I recall a winter 50 years ago. I recall a winter of the greatest snow in Chicago history. I was in the seminary at the time and had gone to visit another sem-inary that day. I still remember my dad nearly miracu-lously driving me back to the college seminary despite the storm. I vividly remember the scene of abandoned cars on the Kennedy. There were many stories of peo-ple helping others in a time of need. In times of crisis we can see the best of people emerge. We need to re-member that in these times. We continue the To Teach who Christ is effort. We are approaching our goal. I ask if you have not yet made a pledge to consider making one. My sister underwent a successful surgery. Please continue to pray for her. See this bulletin for other important arti-cles and event announcements.

Comenzamos la semana de las Escuelas Católicas. Yo tuve la bendición de recibir una educa-ción católica de joven. Escuelas católicas siguen siendo importante para nuestra Iglesia hasta el día de hoy. Escue-las conglomeradas, como la nuestra, Northside Catholic Academy, son un desafío. Es importante que las familias continúen participando y apoyando su parroquia. Estoy muy agradecido a las familias de nuestra parroquia que van a nuestra escuela católica, Northside Catoholic Aca-demy. Son muy leales a nuestra parroquia. Nosotros sub-sidiamos la escuela como parte de nuestra misión parro-quial. Espero que más familias puedan acceder a la venta-ja de la buena educación y formación que nuestros niños reciben en nuestra escuela. Agradezco a todos los participaron nuestra reunión del comité de finanzas. Agradezco a todos nuestros voluntarios que ayudan a hacer presente al Señor en nuestra comunidad. Tenemos la bendición de mu-chas personas que nos ayudan en nuestro ministerio pa-rroquial. Su ayuda no es siempre visible a todos nuestros feligreses. Para una parroquia de nuestro tamaño, tenemos un numero llamativo de voluntarios. Agradezco a todos nuestros voluntarios. Y a nuestro personal que los ayuda. Recuerdo un invierno hace 50 años. Recuer-do el invierno con más nieve en la historia de Chicago. Estaba en el seminario y ese día había ido a visitar a otro seminario. Todavía recuerdo mi papa manejando milagro-samente de vuelta al seminario. Recuerdo vívidamente la escena de carros abandonados en la Kennedy. Hubo mu-chas historias de gente ayudando a otros en momentos de necesidad. En momentos de crisis, podemos ver surgir lo mejor de cada uno. Necesitamos recordar esto en estos momentos. Continuamos con la campaña Enseñar Quien Es Cristo. Nos estamos acercado a nuestro objetivo. Les pido que si no ha hecho su donación toda-vía, considere hacer una. This week’s gospel is The Beatitudes. This reading could be interpreted as the handbook for Ig-natian Services. Through our various ministries we try to reach to all who are in need. Regardless of race or creed we minister to the marginalized in our society. The Ministers of Consolation help those in our community that have experienced the death of a loved one. Our Ministers of Care bring Jesus to those in area nursing homes. Through our food pan-try we feed the hungry. We answer the call of the downtrodden and try to get them the help they need. We are trying to act as Jesus commanded us to love one another. We appreciate your support. If you would like to be part of our ministry, please contact us at is@stignatiuschurch.org

THE CHOSEN REMNANT Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testa-ment prophets. He speaks in today’s first reading of im-pending judgment. But the Lord will leave a “remnant” in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to be-come vital to both Judaism and Christianity. Paul’s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep con-cern for the Christians there. They are too self-confident, he says, too sure of themselves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given them all they have. Today’s Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus’ “Great Sermon.” As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humil-iation of the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God’s kingdom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. EL RESTO ELEGIDO Sofonías es uno de los profetas menos conocidos del Antiguo Testamento. Hoy habla en la primera lectura so-bre el juicio inminente. Pero el Señor dejará un “resto” en Israel. Esta imagen de un resto, de lo que quedará, será vital para judíos y cristianos. La carta de Pablo a los corintios evidencia su profunda preocupación por los cristianos de allí. Están muy confia-dos, dice, muy seguros de sí mismos. Los insta a recordar que Cristo les ha dado todo lo que tienen. El Evangelio de hoy incluye el comienzo del “Gran Ser-món” de Jesús. Así como Dios le dio a Moisés la Ley en el Sinaí, ahora Jesús reúne a sus discípulos en un monte para enseñarles la nueva Ley. Cada una de estas Bienaventuran-zas contrasta la humillación del presente con la gloria del futuro. La pobreza frente a las riquezas del Reino de Dios, el hambre de Dios frente a la satisfacción en el Espíritu, la per-secución frente al Reino de Dios. What is Adoration? And what are we supposed to do?

Adoration or Eucharistic Adoration is adoring or honoring the Eucharistic Presence of Christ, con-templating the mystery of Christ truly present be-fore us. During Eucharistic Adoration we are invit-ed to “watch and wait”, to remain silent in His Pres-ence, and be open to His grace. You may simply pray in silence asking Holy Spirit’s guidance You may bring a prayer book or bible to help you medi-tate. You can use your own words or traditional prayer. You may pray the rosary. You can bring a notebook and write your thoughts and prayers. Ad-oration is a the prayer form that can really enhance your inner prayer life. Specifically, praying before the Blessed Sacrament and contemplating Christ’s sacrifice and gift of the Eucharist gives us oppor-tunity to come to a deeper, richer understanding of these central aspects of our faith. The prayer of ado-ration can be as simple or as profound as you make it. Treat Christ as you would one of your closest friends, with love and respect. Tell Him whatever is in your mind and heart, your troubles and your joys.

Here at St. Ignatius parish, Eucharistic adoration takes place every first Friday of the month from 8:30 a.m. (after the morning mass) until 3 p.m., finishing with the celebration of the Mass. Please come and allow the Holy Spirit to work within you through this great prayer.

¿Qué es Adoración? ¿Y que podemos hacer durante?

Adoración o Adoración Eucarística es adorar u hon-rar la Presencia de Cristo en Eucaristía, contem-plando el misterio de Cristo verdaderamente presen-te frente a nosotros. Durante la Adoración Eucarís-tica se nos invita a “mirar y esperar”, a permanecer en silencio en Su Presencia, y abrirnos a Su Gracia. Puede simplemente rezar en silencio pidiendo al Es-píritu Santo que lo guie. Puede traer un libro de ora-ciones o la biblia para meditar. Puede utilizar sus propias palabras o oraciones tradicionales. Puede rezar el rosario. Puede traer una libreta para anotar sus pensamientos y oraciones. La Adoración es una forma de oraciones que puede mejorar su vida de oración. Específicamente, rezando frente al Santísi-mo Sacramento y contemplando el sacrificio de Cris-to y el don de la Eucaristía nos da la oportunidad de entender más profundamente estos aspectos centra-les de nuestra fe. La oración de adoración puede ser simple o profunda como usted quiera. Trate a Cristo como uno de sus amigos más cercanos, con amor y respeto. Cuéntale sus penas y sus alegrías, lo que esta en su mente y su corazón.

Aquí en la Parroquia de San Ignacio tenemos Adoración Eucarística el primer vienes del mes de 8:30 a.m. (luego de la misa diaria) a 3 p.m., terminado con la celebración de la misa. Venga y déjese guiar por el Espíritu Santo por medio de la oración.

Today, we kick off National Catholic Schools Week, an annual celebration of Catholic education, which runs January 29-February 4, 2017. This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” At NCA, we have so much to celebrate! We are blessed with an amazing com-munity of students, families, staff, faculty, alumni and parishioners who recognize the value of Catho-lic education. As a 2013 Blue Ribbon School, NCA exemplifies this year’s theme with our high stand-ards of academic excellence; our commitment to a faith-filled, well-rounded education; and our focus on service.

We have a fun week of events and activities planned. Today, each of our six parishes is celebrat-ing the spirit of NCA with a special NCA Mass. We will also be hosting Catholic Schools Week Open Houses at both campuses today. Our Primary School Campus (PreK-4) will be open 10am-12pm, and our new Middle School Campus (5-8) will be open 11am-1pm. Everyone in our community is invit-ed: parishioners, neighbors, alumni, current fam-ilies and prospective parents! Come celebrate Catholic education with us! Meet administration and teachers, and tour our dynamic classrooms. On Wednesday, February 1, you’re invited to join us in prayer at our Catholic Schools Week Mass at St. Gertrude Church, at 8:30am. Or come to our Rebec-ca Caudill Family Read Aloud February 1, at 7pm in the Primary Campus Cafeteria (recommended for fourth grade and up). A mystery guest will read ex-cerpts from “Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom” by Lynda Blackmon Lowrey. We’ll wrap up the celebra-tion on Friday, Feb. 3, at 1:00pm with our traditional 5th Graders vs. Faculty basketball game and pep rally. Thank you for the tremendous support your parish gives to NCA!

Hoy, comenzamos la Semana Nacional de Escuelas Católicas, una celebración anual de la Educa-ción Católica, que va del 29 de enero al 4 de febre-ro, 2017. El lema de este año es “Escuelas Católi-cas: Comunidades de Fe, Conocimiento y Servicio.” ¡En NCA, tenemos mucho para celebrar! Tenemos la bendición de tener una maravillosa comunidad de estudiantes, familias, personal, egresados y feligre-ses que reconocen el valor de la educación católica. The Knights of Columbus will hold a Free Throw Contest on Saturday, February 4th , at Saint Margaret Mary Activity Center. Registration is at 4 PM with the shoot out to start at 4:30.
