Evangelho de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo segundo São João Naquele tempo, as irmãs de Lázaro mandaram dizer a Je-sus:

«Senhor, o teu amigo está doente». Ouvindo isto, Jesus disse: «Essa doença não é mortal, mas é para a glória de Deus, para que por ela seja glorificado o Filho do homem». Jesus era amigo de Marta, de sua irmã e de Lázaro. Entre-tanto, depois de ouvir dizer que ele estava doente, ficou ainda dois dias no local onde Se encontrava. Depois disse aos discípulos: «Vamos de novo para a Judeia». Ao chegar lá, Jesus encontrou o amigo sepultado havia quatro dias. Quan-do ouviu dizer que Jesus estava a chegar, Marta saiu ao seu encontro, enquanto Maria ficou sentada em casa. Marta disse a Jesus: «Senhor, se tivesses estado aqui, meu irmão não teria mor-rido. Mas sei que, mesmo agora, tudo o que pedires a Deus, De-us To concederá». Disse-lhe Jesus: «Teu irmão ressuscitará». Marta respon-deu: «Eu sei que há-de ressuscitar na ressurreição do último dia». Disse-lhe Jesus: «Eu sou a ressurreição e a vida. Quem acredita em Mim, ainda que tenha morrido, viverá; e todo aquele que vive e acredita em Mim nunca morrerá. Acreditas nisto?». Disse-Lhe Marta: «Acredito, Senhor, que Tu és o Messias, o Filho de Deus, que havia de vir ao mundo». Jesus comoveu-Se profundamente e perturbou-Se. Depois perguntou: «Onde o pusestes?». Responderam-Lhe: «Vem ver, Senhor». E Jesus chorou. Diziam então os judeus: «Vede como era seu amigo». Mas alguns deles observaram: «Então Ele, que abriu os olhos ao cego, não podia também ter feito que este homem não mor-resse?». Entretanto, Jesus, intimamente comovido, chegou ao túmulo. Era uma gruta, com uma pedra posta à entrada. Disse Jesus: «Tirai a pedra». Respondeu Marta, irmã do morto: «Já cheira mal, Senhor, pois morreu há quatro dias». Disse Jesus: «Eu não te disse que, se acreditasses, verias a glória de Deus?». Tiraram então a pedra. Jesus, levantando os olhos ao Céu, disse: «Pai, dou-Te graças por Me teres ouvido. Eu bem sei que sempre Me ouves, mas falei assim por causa da multidão que nos cerca, para acreditarem que Tu Me enviaste». Dito isto, bradou com voz forte: «Lázaro, sai para fora». O morto saiu, de mãos e pés enfaixados com ligaduras e o rosto envolvido num sudário. Disse-lhes Jesus: «Desligai-o e deixai-o ir». Então muitos judeus, que tinham ido visitar Maria, ao verem o que Jesus fizera, acreditaram n’Ele. Palavra da salvação .

Brothers and sisters: Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Easter Sunday (Cycle B) The tomb was empty. In the early morning darkness of that first Easter, there was only confusion for Mary Magdalene and the other disciples. But as the daylight spread, they saw the dawning of a new crea-tion. At first they didn't understand the Scripture, to-day's Gospel tells us. We don't know which precise Scripture texts they were supposed to understand. Perhaps it was the sign of Jonah, who rose from the belly of the great fish after three days (see Jonah 1:17). Or maybe Hosea's prophecy of Israel's restora-tion from exile (see Hosea 6:2). Perhaps it was the psalmist who rejoiced that God had not abandoned him to the nether world (see Psalm 16:9-10). Whichever Scripture it was, as the disciples bent down into the tomb, they saw and they believed. What did they see? Burial shrouds in an empty tomb. The stone removed from the tomb. Seven times in nine verses we hear that word - "tomb." What did they believe? That God had done what Jesus said He would do - raised Him up on the third day (see Mark 9:31; 10:34). What they saw and believed, they bore witness to, as today's First Reading tells us. Peter's speech is a summary of the gospels - from Jesus' baptism in the Jordan to His hanging on a tree (see Deuteronomy 21:22-23), to His rising from the dead. We are children of the apostles, born into the new world of their witness. Our lives are now "hidden with Christ in God," as today's Epistle says. Like them, we gather in the morning on the first day of the week - to celebrate the Eucharist, the feast of the empty tomb. We rejoice that the stones have been rolled away from our tombs, too. Each of us can shout, as we do in today's Psalm: "I shall not die, but live." They saw and believed. And we await the day they promised would come - when we, too, "will ap-pear with Him in glory."

5º Domingo da Quaresma

As leituras deste Domingo propõem-nos o tema da “luz”. Definem a experiência cristã como “viver na luz”. No Evangelho, Jesus apresenta-se como “a luz do mundo”; a sua missão é libertar os homens das trevas do egoísmo, do orgulho e da auto-suficiência. Aderir à proposta de Jesus é enveredar por um caminho de liberdade e de realização que conduz à vida plena. Da acção de Jesus nasce, assim, o Homem Novo – isto é, o Homem elevado às suas máximas po-tencialidades pela comunicação do Espírito de Jesus. Na segunda leitura, Paulo propõe aos cristãos de Éfeso que recusem viver à margem de Deus (“trevas”) e que escolham a “luz”. Em concreto, Paulo explica que viver na “luz” é praticar as obras de Deus (a bondade, a justiça e a verdade). A primeira leitura não se refere directamente ao tema da “luz” (o tema central na liturgia deste domingo). No entanto, conta a escolha de David para rei de Israel e a sua unção: é um óptimo pretexto para reflectirmos sobre a unção que recebemos no dia do nosso Baptismo e que nos constituiu testemunhas da “luz” de Deus no mundo.

5th Sunday of Lent (Cycle A) As we draw near to the end of Lent, today's Gospel clearly has Jesus' passion and death in view. That's why John gives us the detail about Lazarus' sister, Mary - that she is the one who anointed the Lord for burial (see John 12:3,7). His disciples warn against returning to Judea; Thomas even predicts they will "die with Him" if they go back. When Lazarus is raised, John notices the tombstone being taken away, as well as Lazarus' burial cloths and head covering - all details he later notices with Jesus' empty tomb (see John 20:1,6,7). Like the blind man in last week's readings, Lazarus represents all humanity. He stands for "dead man" - for all those Jesus loves and wants to liberate from the bands of sin and death. John even recalls the blind man in his account today (see John 11:37). Like the man's birth in blindness, Lazarus' death is used by Jesus to reveal "the glory of God" (see John 9:3). And again like last week, Jesus' words and deeds give sight to those who believe (see John 11:40). If we believe, we will see - that Jesus loves each of us as He loved Lazarus, that He calls us out of death and into new life. By His Resurrection Jesus has fulfilled Ezekiel's promise in today's First Reading. He has opened the graves that we may rise, put His Spirit in us that we may live. This is the Spirit that Paul writes of in to-day's Epistle. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead will give life to we who were once dead in sin. Faith is the key. If we believe as Martha does in to-day's Gospel - that Jesus is the resurrection and the life - even if we die, we will live. "I have promised and I will do it," the Father assures us in the First Reading. We must trust in His word, as we sing in today's Psalm - that with Him is for-giveness and salvation.

Prayer to St. Gabriel for strength during suffering

Tradition says the Archangel comforted Jesus when he was suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane.

St. Gabriel is one of the few archangels mentioned by name in the Bible. He is recorded in the book of Daniel in the Old Testament as well as in the Gospels at the Annunciation, when he delivered the good news of Jesus’ birth to the Virgin Mary. He is often called the “angel of mercy,” because his few appearances in the Bible are matched with messages of conso-lation. Christian tradition claims that St. Gabriel is the angel who appeared to Jesus while he was suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane.

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done.” And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him. (Luke 22:42-43)

The Catholic Encyclopedia explains that, “Gabriel is mentioned only twice in the New Testament, but it is not un-reasonable to suppose with Christian tradition that it is he who … “strengthened” Our Lord in the garden (cf. the Hymn for Lauds on 24 March).” This tradition also corresponds with the name of “Gabriel,” which is translated as, “God is my strength.” Here is an adapted prayer from the The Prayer-book of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri that invokes St. Gabriel’s help in the midst of suffering. During times of great suffering, Christians have al-ways turned to God and those saints closest to him, in hopes that he will bring relief to his people.

São Gabriel é um dos poucos arcanjos mencionados pelo nome na Bíblia. Ele está registrado no livro de Daniel no Antigo Testamento, bem como nos Evangelhos na Anunciação, quan-do ele entregou as boas novas do nascimento de Jesus à Virgem Maria. A Enciclopédia Católica explica que: “Gabriel é mencionado apenas duas vezes no Novo Testamento, mas não é irracional supor com a tradição cristã que é ele quem…“ fortaleceu ”Nosso Senhor no jardim (cf. o Hino das Laudes no dia 24 de Março). "Essa tradição também corresponde ao nome de" Ga-briel ", que é traduzido como" Deus é minha força ".

Aqui está uma oração adaptada do livro de orações do oratório de São Filipe Neri, que invoca a ajuda de São Gabriel no meio do sofrimento. Anointing of the Sick The church encourages & invites all who are ill, who are to undergo surgery, or who are confined to their home due to illness to be prayed over & anointed with sacred oil. This can take place after Mass, at home or at the hospital. Please

do not wait for the last moment for yourself or a loved one to be anointed. The last sacrament is Viaticum or commun-ion for the dying. Please speak to a priest for anointing.
