Electrical Technicians are responsible for equipment modifications to improve safety, increase productivity and reduce waste. Experience: Candidates must possess a minimum of 5-7 years of experience troubleshooting manufacturing equipment in Electrical support role. Knowledge in maintaining instrumentation and control systems, as well as AC and DC motors and drives, using various troubleshooting tools such as multi-meter, oscilloscope, and megger. PLC software experience is desired. Must be able to read and follow electrical schematics. Use of Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel is required. Be able to implement NEC requirements for electrical installations. Must be well versed in the use of PCs and common network systems. Experience with MP2 is desired. Shift: to work a continuous operating shift on straight nights.

Dear Motor Medics,I have a 2004 Ford F150 truck and I've lost the 4-wheel drive. The front end of

the truck started to grind for a while before it finally stopped completely. Thetransfer case does seem to be working because the front driveshaft turns when in4-wheel drive and does not when it is in 2-wheel drive. can you guys lead me in adirection of diagnosis that might help feel more secure in what I am told at therepair shop?

Dear Bernard,We make plenty repairs to the 4-wheel drive systems on these trucks. there is a com-

mon problem that starts with a grinding then ends up with a failure. The system usesvacuum to engage and disengage a locking mechanism on the front hubs. When in 2wheel drive the vacuum is applied and the hubs release. The system uses a small vacu-um hose to do this that is activated electrically. That hose has a common fault whichcauses it to be rubbed through and when it does the system only is half engaged. This islike trying to put a transmission into gear without using the clutch. Eventually the geargrinding eats the teeth off the hubs. To repair it the hubs and the actuators need to bereplaced and the vacuum line needs to be repaired and protected to prevent futureissues. This is just one possible cause of trouble.

Dear Motor Medics,I've had an ongoing issue with my 2008 Chevrolet Impala. The check engine

light has been coming on and I've had it scanned several times and I got a codewhich says I have a failed thermostat. So here is the problem. I replaced the ther-mostat myself then had my local auto parts store who read the code clear it andnow less than a week later the light is back on with the same code. I have goodheat and the temp gauge reads in the normal range. Have you ever seen thisbefore?

Dear Mark,We have seen this and one possibility is that the thermostat has failed a second time

either due to a faulty part or there is something else wrong in the system which is mak-ing it think you have a failure. One of these possibilities is a failed temp sensor on thecooling system or possibly the connector going to it. When we make this repair which wedo very often, we replaced the sending unit and its connector pigtail and the thermostatthen clear the codes and verify operation. Some people opt to just do part of the repairbut then find they need to go back and do the rest and end up spending more money.Diagnosing the system is fairly straight forward for a repair shop with a scanner, a multi-meter and temp probe. Hope this helps you out.

Dear Mike,That's a ton of stuff going on there but I suspect

they might all be connected. Over the past year wehave seen no less than 20 vehicles exhibit this set ofsymptoms and they all turned out to be the same, afailed throttle body. The throttle body is electric andis the part that regulates how much air enters theengine. There is no cable connecting the throttlepedal to the engine as in the past. This system asyou can imagine must be calibrated exactly andhave sensors to make sure that the vehicle does nothave unintended acceleration or throttle loss. Whenthe engine computer senses a failure in any of theinternal circuits the system goes into reducedengine power mode. It will need to be diagnosed toknow for sure and if replaced make sure you keep areceipt for the work in case GM decides to recall itfor safety reasons which could possibly make youeligible for a monetary reimbursement on repairs.

cold outside I get a message on the dash thatreads "Engine Hot A/C off and the Check Enginelight comes on at the same time. Once the carwarms up I can shut the light off and clear themessage if I cycle the ignition key. It has beendoing this for over a year and my wife is gettingnervous about it so I want to get it fixed.

Dear Tom,We have seen this message a few times and

although engine codes and messages should besomething simple to diagnose they don't always getdiagnosed as easily as you could hope for. The sys-tem needs to be diagnosed to know for sure what'sup but some of the things to check that can trip thecodes are the lack of ability to read engine tempera-ture due to a failed sensor or connection to it or anactual failure of the engine to reach proper operatingtemperature in a preset amount of time as deter-mined by the engine computer software. Now themessage reads Engine Hot, but that's where it getstricky because when the engine can't reach propertemperature it's often a failed thermostat and thatmakes the engine run cold, not hot. A strange situa-tion for sure but it's just one of the fun things wemechanics get to deal with everyday on our shops.


Dear Motor Medics,I've got a Nissan Titan and it has a ticking

noise in the engine. It has had this for about ayear and it doesn't seem to get any louder but itmakes me nervous about taking it on trips farfrom home. When I have my engine oil changedmy shop says it's just lifters and they probablyare noisy because I tended to change my engineoil every 10k miles, I know, that's too longbetween changes. I recently put in an additivethat cleans the engine oil system and the noisestopped for two weeks then came back. Should Itry two cans at the same time?

Dear Carry,NO! That's the best way we can answer that last

question. Never use an additive in a way not directedby the manufacturer of said product or you risk per-manent damage. Additives have their place and ifused as directed sometimes can fix a problem andsave you a ton of money but they are also some ofthe most abused products out there. With yourextended oil changes you probably clogged up someoil passages and using the cleaner helped restorethem. Most of those cleaners are meant to beinstalled, then the engine oil changed within a fewminutes of running. If that works then you may beable to repeat every 1000k miles for a few monthsand you may save the engine.
