The agreement, and the recent opening of Herbalife’s Quick Response Center in Cebu City, is part of Herbalife’s plan to increase its product access and availability in the Philippines where a recent survey showed weight gain is the top concern of 84 percent of the population. “This expansion will make it very easy for our members and customers to obtain Herbalife products at a location closer to their homes,” said Rosalio Valenzuela, general manager of Herbalife Philippines. “People are continuously looking for ways to become fit. This new initiative supports the efforts of our members to bring excellent nutrition to more Filipinos in every community.” Phoenix Petroleum Philippines has built an extensive network throughout the country with almost 450 stations and is currently refurbishing existing stations and building new large ones to provide more products to their customers. Herbalife Philippines recently opened its first-ever Quick Response Center (QRC), located in Cebu City, as part of its nationwide expansion plan.

Herbalife executives, including general manager Bong T. Valenzuela, and independent Herbalife members flew to the official opening in Cebu City, known as the Queen City of the South, located about 570 kilometers southeast of Manila; it is the fifth most populous city in the country.

Gaining weight is the top health concern of 84 percent of Filipinos, according to a Herbalife survey released earlier this year. Other leading concerns include lack of energy, 65 percent, and poor digestive health, 54 percent. The survey revealed that 75 percent strive to live a healthy life, but find it difficult to stay active during workdays.

“We believe our products to improve weight management and nutrition give us an excellent opportunity to expand in the country,” Valenzuela said. “This Cebu QRC is a crucial part of our plan to continuously provide access for our Members to our services and products.”

Also present during the opening were members of the Herbalife Triathlon team that competed in this year’s Ironman Cebu, held in early August.

How To Achieve Better Workout PerformanceWherever and however you choose to get fit, the exercises you perform are not designed simply to help you look good. Each move has a purpose and trains a specific muscle, or group of muscles. Becoming more efficient and getting the most out of your workout, as well as avoiding injury, all comes down to the correct form and technique.

Watch yourself in the mirror as you perform an exercise. Check to make sure your weight is appropriately balanced and not favouring one side, and adjust as needed. For example, when performing a squat, watch to make sure your knees do not move too far forward; you should still be able to see your feet.

Don’t feel pressured into lifting very heavy weights. If you can lift/move the weight in a smooth, non-jerky motion and maintain good form, then it’s likely to be the correct weight for you. If you feel the need to hold your breath, you may need to downsize. Master the movement pattern before you load up the weights.

Being too eager to progress is an easy trap in which to fall. Remember, heavier weights or faster reps are not necessarily better. Push yourself during your workout, but listen to your body and know when to slow down a little. Try to maintain a set intensity for a few weeks and when it becomes comfortable, it’s time to progress to the next level. Doing too much too soon will encourage bad habits and incorrect form.

going the Distance: a Winning story of a Pinoy Triathlete

Omar Paredes, a 37-year-old Triathlete and a seven-time finisher in full-distance Ironman races, was the first Filipino finisher of the

well-known Norseman Xtreme Triathlon in Norway last August 6, 2016.

Norseman Xtreme Triathlon is one of the most challenging races in the globe. Athletes begin with a 4km swim in ice-cold water, with temperature dropping to as low as 13 degrees Celsius. Participants will then cycle 180km over five mountains and finally run 42 km to the top of Mount Gaustaoppen.

The Rio 2016 Summer Paralympic proceedings closed its curtain with the Closing Ceremony on September 18, where 4,300 athletes with disabilities from 159 countries competed.

The Philippines finally bagged a medal after 16-year Paralympic medal drought. The 36-year old Josephine Medina, a polio victim who uses table tennis as a form of therapy, won a bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games after she beat Germany’s Juliane Wolf. It was the first medal for the Philippines in the Paralympics since the 2000 games when Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta won the bronze in powerlifting.

Medina also joined swimmer Ernie Gawilan, wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan, powerlifters Agustin Kitan and Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta from PHILSPADA.

The athletes, headed by Philippine Sports Association for the Differently-Abled-National Paralympic Committee, are backed by Herbalife Philippines as the official nutrition sponsor of the team.

“We understand that athletes have special nutritional needs and we are glad to be able to address this need of delegation. We hope that through this partnership, they continue to pursue excellence and remain an inspiration to everyone.” Said Bong Valenzuela, General Manager of Herbalife Philippines.

Despite the near-freezing temperature and mostly uphill terrain, Paredes still managed to finish the race within 16 hours and with a prestigious black “Survivor” T-shirt that were only awarded to the elite first 160 finishers.

In preparation for the so called “tough and brutal” race, he’s been working a lot on his runs. Knowing that there are a lot of hills on the run, Paredes worked hard to develop strong legs.

Paredes who came from Los Baños, Laguna, where hot springs are popular, said that the most challenging part was the swim-leg as he is not used to the weather in the Arctic Circle. “The waters in Norseman is as cold as the water right out the freezer,” he also added in his interview.

As a coach of Herbalife Triathlon Team, he recalls, “It was tough and brutal! I don’t think I could survive the race without Herbalife. You have to sustain energy all throughout the race. With the help of Herbalife F1 Shake, Herbalife 24 Prolong, and Herbalife N-R-G, it gives an additional push that no other products could give you.”

Paredes finished 138th out of 250 participants. “My wife and I were holding the Philippine flag, teary-eyed, feeling relieved and exhausted at the same time,” he narrated.

He also looks forward to take part of two other extreme triathlons: The Swissman and The Celtman Xtreme.
