Summit Speakers and Session Description
Marilyn Jager AdamsMarilyn Jager Adams, Ph.D., is a Visiting Scholar in the Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences Department of Brown University. Formerly a Senior Scientist at Bolt Beranek & Newman, she was Chief Scientist for Soliloquy Learning, Inc., which she co-founded with the goal of harnessing automatic speech recognition for educational purposes. She has been on
the planning or steering committees for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in reading since 1992 and was Literacy Advisor for “Sesame Street” and “Between the Lions.” Among honors, she has received the American Educational Research Association’s Sylvia Scribner Award and the International Dyslexia Association’s Samuel T. Orton Award. She is the author of a number of scholarly papers and several books, including Beginning to Read: Thinking and Learning about Print (MIT Press), Phonemic Awareness in Young Children and its companion, ABC Foundations for Young Children (Brookes Publishing).
Adams’ Session Descriptions
Thinking and Learning about PrintPhonemic awareness is the insight that every spoken word can be conceived as a sequence of elementary speech sounds (phonemes). In this session, we will focus on building on this mindfulness so as to engage children themselves as active agents in learning to read and spell.
Syntax, Vocabulary, & KnowledgeMetacognition of language—thinking about how language works-is key to building students’ vocabulary and their ability to understand complex text. Unpacking the underlying structure of the meanings of nouns, verbs, and adjectives, Dr. Adams will explain how the brain organizes the meanings of words in semantic networks. A benefit of this organization is that every new word makes it easier to learn the next even as active appreciation of how they are structured accelerates the process. To show participants how they can help students to establish and develop these insights, interactive activities will be included throughout.
Kathy BumgardnerKathy Bumgardner is the creator of THINK CLOUDS and other tried-and-true interactive and collaborative literacy tools in her LITERACY TOOL KIT. These are valuable resources that can be learned about today and used immediately to support successful differentiated READING and WRITING classroom instruction. A veteran educator, with more than 30+ years, Kathy
Bumgardner is a passionate presenter who combines research-based interactive instructional best practices and positive humor at every opportunity. With a teaching career spanning a variety of grade levels, diverse classrooms, and
literacy positions in North Carolina Schools, Kathy fully understands the value of sharing real-world teaching strategies that worked for her in her own classrooms, and the overwhelming challenges that teachers and educators face on a daily basis. Kathy is the founder and lead literacy consultant and school improvement coach with Strategies Unlimited, Inc., with many documented successful results in individual schools and districts across the country. In this role, she directly coaches and works with schools, teachers, students, and administrators in collaborative efforts to consistently raise quality cognitive opportunities for students and in setting goals for raising student achievement.
Bumgardner’s Session Descriptions
Classroom Management for Successful and Sustaining Literacy Instruction—Strategies and Ideas That Really Work! What does a well-managed literacy rich classroom look and sound like? How do I know when my students are truly engaged and empowered and that I am preparing them to be college and career ready at each and every level? This session shares many “real world” literacy tools and strategies for enriching classroom management and deepening and sustaining student learning. Resources shared in this session can be implemented in classrooms immediately!
Writing Instruction That Sticks! If reluctant writers are an issue for you...then this session is for you. Our focus for this session will be to provide participants with instructional strategies for high quality AND successful classroom writing instruction. A menu of ideas about HOW to successfully implement writing instruction that utilizes and implements both “response to text” AND the “writing process” that our students need to meet the goals for being COLLEGE & CAREER READY at each step along the way.
Debbie DillerDebbie Diller has been an educator since 1976. How time flies, and how teaching has changed! Debbie has taught PreK through 10th grade in public schools in Pennsylvania and Texas. Her experience ranges from being a classroom teacher to a Title I reading specialist to a migrant education teacher to a literacy coach, as well as a national consultant and author. She
is the author of many books for Stenhouse Publishers, including Math Work Stations, Spaces & Places, Making the Most of Small Groups, Literacy Work Stations, and Practice with Purpose. She has several videos on literacy work stations and small group instruction. Debbie uses her strong understandings of child development and literacy and math development to address the differentiated needs of all students in her work with teachers and administrators. Debbie builds upon current research and theory to provide practical, realistic applications in today’s classrooms. Debbie strives to be a 21st century teacher, so to stay tuned into their needs she spends time every week working with children and their teachers in classrooms.
Diller’s Session Descriptions
Weaving Nonfiction into Literacy StationsWant to include more nonfiction in your 90-minute reading block? This session will explore the importance of teaching with nonfiction and how to weave informational text into partner practice at literacy stations. Get ideas for expanding your teaching and student practice with engaging nonfiction texts in K-2.
Growing Independent Learners: From Literacy Standards to Stations in K-2Need ideas for high-quality literacy work stations with depth in your K-2 classroom? Learn how to grow your stations from what you’re teaching in whole group and small group in your 90-minute reading block. Examine the process of planning for literacy work stations, starting with state standards which extend over time to meaningful partner practice in English language arts. This session will inspire fresh, new thinking on “What does the rest of the class do while I’m working with a small group?”
Vicki GibsonVicki Gibson, Ph.D., is a national educational consultant, author and speaker. Her areas of specialization include behavioral and classroom management, reading instruction, differentiating teaching and practice to improve instructional effectiveness and enhance student achievement, and early childhood education. She owned and directed three private
schools in Texas for 30 years and taught at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Currently, she is the Chairman/CEO for Gibson Hasbrouck & Associates, an educational consulting group that provides on-site professional development, technology-supported trainings, and develops materials for educators to conduct instructional training at the college, school and state levels. Vicki has authored and co-authored several programs and publications including Wonders, Treasures, Managing Small Groups, We Can Early Learning Curriculum, Differentiated Instruction: Grouping for Success; Differentiated Instruction: Guidelines for Implementation; Differentiating Teaching and Practice in Middle and High Schools; Managing Small Group Instruction; Administrators’ Roles for Differentiating Teaching and Practice in Middle School; Classroom Management for Preschools; Managing Behaviors to Support Differentiating Instruction; and I Can Draw Pre-Writing Program and Letters, Sounds & Strokes Phonics Program.
Gibson’s Session Descriptions
Integrating Instruction to Enhance Skills for Listening, Speaking, Reading and Spelling to WriteThis session includes multiple suggestions for teaching students how to use 5 pre-writing strokes to form geometric shapes and print alphabet letters to form words and express ideas. Participants will learn how to integrate instruction for print awareness, alphabet recognition and use, phonological/phonemic awareness, and decoding using sound/symbol correspondence to improve skills for listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing.
Developing Foundational Skills for Emergent and Struggling Readers in K-Grade 2This session includes multiple instructional suggestions for using English, Spanish and American Sign Language to develop foundational skills for listening, speaking, reading and writing. Participants will learn techniques for building vocabulary word knowledge, teaching HFWs, and expanding language and literacy skills for listening comprehension, collaborative conversations, oral and written expression, and reading.
Timothy Rasinski
Timothy Rasinski, Ph.D., is professor of literacy education at Kent State University and director of the reading clinic there. Tim taught for several years as an elementary and middle school classroom and Title I teacher in Nebraska. He has written over 200 articles and has authored, co-authored or edited over 50
books or curriculum programs on reading education. His scholarly interests include reading fluency and word study, reading in the elementary and middle grades, and readers who struggle. His research on reading has been cited by the National Reading Panel and has been published in journals such as Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, Reading Psychology, and the Journal of Educational Research. In 2010 Tim was elected to the International Reading Hall of Fame.
Rasinski’s Session Descriptions
The Fluency Development Lesson—Meeting a Critical and Foundational Need for Younger Readers and also Readers who StruggleResearch has shown that a large percentage of children who struggle in reading are not fully proficient in reading fluency. Research has also revealed that most primary grade students are not provided sufficient instruction in this foundational reading competency. In this presentation Dr. Timothy Rasinski will introduce the Fluency Development Lesson, a daily instructional approach that he has developed over the past 20+ years. He will provide a detailed description, provide a simulation of the lesson for participants, and provide evidence of its effectiveness.
Constructivist Approaches to Phonics and Vocabulary Instruction: Word Study that Works!Word decoding (phonics), vocabulary, and spelling are essential and foundational competencies in learning to read. In this session Dr. Rasinski will share innovative, proven, and engaging methods for helping students to not only learn but also take great delight in words and word study. Participants will learn about Word Harvesting, gaming approaches to word instruction, and approaches for helping primary through secondary students expand their general and academic vocabularies through teaching word roots. Participants will leave the session with multiple and practical ways to create an engaging word study program for their students.
