It celebrates the Jewish people who lived in Persia more than 2,400 years ago. What happens at Purim? There are four different things that everyone does, or tries to do at Purim. Sample Slide It all starts the day before Purim. That’s a fast day – the fast of Esther. It lasts from sunrise to sunset. What does fast mean? When someone fasts it means that they don’t eat but if anyone has difficulty managing without food it’s alright to eat something. Sample Slide At Purim the Book of Esther is read in the synagogue. It tells the story of how Ester saved the Jews and it’s read twice, once in the evening and again in the morning. Sample Slide What’s a synagogue? A synagogue is a place where Jewish people go to worship. It’s like a church. Sample Slide This scroll of the Book of Esther is very old and it is written in Hebrew. Sample Slide Do you remember what the Jewish children do every time they hear the name of Haman? They shout, whistle, hiss and stamp their feet and they use special rattles or noisemakers called greggors. Children often take part in plays about Esther, Mordecai and Haman or dress up and go to fancy dress parties. Sample Slide Purim is a time for sharing. At Purim Jews often give money to people who are very poor. The custom is to give at least two poor people money so lots of people give money to charity. There is chocolate Purim gelt for children too! Sample Slide School children exchange Mishloach Manot with their friends. That means exchanging gifts. As well as giving money, everyone sends gifts of food to their family and friends. That’s so that everyone can join in and share the festival. Sample Slide In school, Purim is a fun day where everyone dresses up. At home, there is a special meal where little three-cornered cakes are eaten. They are made of pastry with a sweet filling and are shaped like the purses people used long ago. Link They are called Hamantashen which means ‘Haman’s purses’ but the children sometimes call them Haman’s Hats. Haman’s Hair (fine egg noodles) Haman’s Feet (sweet rolls) and Haman’s Fleas (sesame sweets) are also eaten. Sample Slide This is a song they sing about Haman’s hat. My hat, it has three corners. Three corners has my hat. If my hat had not three corners, It would not be my hat. You keep missing words out as you sing it!
