THE LIBERTY LIONS
2016—2017 2nd Qtr. Parent Newsletter
.
Dear Fellow Lions:
One of the best ways for students to earn good grades in school is by having excellent attendance. Being on time for school every day is the most im-portant first step in the educational process. Teachers at our school put a great deal of time and energy into teaching lessons that are meaningful and directly related to the content standards for their courses.
The chart below examines the proficiency of our current seniors, comparing their performance on the SBAC last spring with their attendance in their freshman and sophomore years.
The results are clear: a higher percentage of students with good attendance meet or exceed standards in English-Language Arts.
Lessons often involve a variety of activities, designed to reach students who have different learning styles. Classroom discussions are interactive and de-signed to help students solidify their understanding of a topic. These activities are subtly influenced by the human dynamics of the class. It is impossible for a teacher to recreate the same atmosphere when tutoring a student who has missed a lesson. Though a teacher can share the main idea behind a lesson, the “spark” of the classroom experience is lost.
Students who are on time every day send a message to the teacher that they value and respect the teacher, their classmates and learning. Those who are late interrupt the lesson, stopping the flow, forcing a teacher to fill out extra administrative paperwork and disrupting the learning that is taking place.
One way you can help is to encourage your son/daughter to attend school every day. Of course, if he/she is contagious with an illness, please keep them home until they are healthy. Students who are so sick as to miss school are probably too sick to attend night activities on campus. Try to arrange appoint-ments for outside of class time. Another idea is to provide positive incentives for your son/daughter if attendance is excellent. Remember, pizza moti-vates!
Thank you for helping us to provide the best education possible to our students.
With Lion Pride,
Patrick M. Walsh

LIBERTY UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT
OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR 2017-18 SCHOOL YEAR

The Liberty Union High School District is committed to increasing counseling services to students on our campuses. Our district’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) specifies that supplemental funding from the state will be used for counseling ser-vices. Below is an introduction by Laura Bevilacqua, our MFT intern.
My name is Laura Bevilacqua and I am a marriage and family therapy in-tern (MFTI #74986) supervised by Sara Dietzel, MFT (License #51356) . I have had the pleasure of working as a critical support counselor at Lib-erty since August of 2015. Students come in with a variety of issues in-cluding, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, anger, and family/social difficulties. The aim of counseling is to provide teens a safe space to talk about whatever challenges they may be facing, enabling them to feel heard and to develop the tools necessary to cope and resolve prob-lems in a healthy way. With the exception of abuse or danger to self or others, students’ information is confidential. Students are generally re-ferred by school counselors, though teachers, administrators, and par-ents make referrals, as well. Length of counseling and frequency of vis-its varies depending upon the needs of the student and can change ac-cording to his/her wishes. Unless a student drops in during a crisis situ-ation, students are pulled out of electives in an effort to minimize im-pact on their studies. Liberty cares about its students and realizes that there are times in a person’s life when challenges are too great to bear alone. I am here to help. You can find me in B-1. Parents can either email me at [email protected] or call me at 925-634-3521, extension 5420.

The Teaching and Learning Careers Academy has had a busy se-mester! TLC 10th, 11th, and 12th graders visited Chico State Uni-versity on September 29 and Sonoma State University on Novem-ber 10. In addition to college field trips, TLC students have been getting work experience with children at cooperating elementary and middle schools, as well as here on campus in high school and SPED classrooms. Seniors also participated in their annual Mock Job Fair final exam before winter break.
Coming up spring semester: “Career Focus Friday” at Los Medanos College on February 24. Curricular field trips are al-so in the works. Liberty freshman or sophomores interested in joining TLC Academy for the 2017-18 school year should visit Kan-dy Aldana, N14 or Karen Cailotto, D1 for more information!

The Liberty Girls Tennis Team had a great season this year! With our captains Natalie Hodgson, Courtney Martin, and Savannah Ramirez leading the way at 1, 2 and 3 singles, we had numerous victories. The most notable of these victories was against Freedom, as we beat them both times we played them, allowing us to take home the Bell Trophy. Our success was also largely in part due to new players to our program, such as Ryann Swift, Summer Ross, Molly Cunningham, and Melissa Sprenkel. Their amazing improvement over a few months of playing tennis allowed us to be a very competitive and strong team this season. Other players on Varsity who played some great matches and made large contributions to the team include Victoria Ramirez, Katrina Austria, Colette Truhe, Shivani Sharma, and Shilpa Sharma. Furthermore, our JV team did very well and were highly competitive. We look forward to next season, as we are only losing three seniors, and we are hoping to get some new talent on the team.

Liberty High School offers many opportunities for students to grow as athletes, citizens, and members of
the 114 years of athletic history here at Liberty. Students involved with interscholastic athletics achieve
better in the classroom, maintain improved overall health, and benefit from the social interaction of the
athletic environment. It is our sincere hope that all students will take the opportunity to get involved in
at least one season of sport each school year…the more sports in which a student participates, the
better!
Students must meet residential and grade eligibility requirements. For more information, please see the
Athletic Director page on the school website.
To register for sports, parents and students use our convenient web-based service, hosted by
