What sort of Distribution

Company are you going to

choose to distribute your

magazine?

I am now going to be looking at the two main

ways of distributing magazines and which

would be best for my magazine. The first type

is to distribute it mainstream; they will

distribute the magazines to supermarkets and

corner shops. The second is to be independent

and this would mean selling my magazine in

places where I would find my target audience

and not to main retailers.

Give an example of a real

company/magazine that fits

into the strategy you’ve

chosen.

An example of an independent distributor and

the type of distributor I want my magazine to

go for is 'Vice'. The magazine 'Vice'

distributes over 1 million copies of every

issue across 31 countries across the world.

For every issue distributed they have a 100%

pick up rate which is the three times more

than there competitors and You can find the

magazines in fashion boutiques,

bars, record stores, galleries, and cafes

where it is free to pick up.

Who your audience are and

why this distribution

strategy will be

effective for your

audience My audience are ABC1 are individualist and are 16-27 year old males (there are also some females). By distributing my magazine independently I believe my target audience would like it more. By doing this I would be making my magazine independent which is the whole theme of indie rock and I want to carry that theme throughout the whole of the magazine. This would appeal to my audience because the whole concept of being independent means to not be influenced or controlled by what everyone is doing and to be free of being judged and not caring what other peoples options are and letting them change what you believe in.

I also think my target audience would also like it because of the easy way of walking into a cafes or record store and buying what you went in for as well as the magazine meaning you can do to things in one go. This would work well for my magazine as being aged 16-27 suggests that they are constantly busy with university/ college and having everything you need in one place would help the student lifestyle.

Finally I think that the whole secrecy of the magazine being where no one else would expect it unless they were looking for it would interest my audience.

The kind of places you’ll be

looking to distribute it to.

Where will you expect to be sold?

Why will this be an effective way

of targeting your audience?

I would like to distribute my magazines to

shops where I know my target audience will go

to and where my magazine would link in with

the shop’s theme. These themes are to do

with:

Being individual

Adventure

These places are clothes shops that are

closely linked to adventure and record shops

where it shall be placed next to the indie

rock genre of music.

• Reef is a surfer and skate

board shop• Converses are

closely linked

with basketball

but is now

linked to skate

boards

• Two seasons is a surfing, skate

board and snowboarding shop

that supplies branded clothes as

well as equipment for sports

• Element is also a hugely

popular brand of

skateboard clothing and

boards along with other

products

Whether you’ll have a

multi-platform strategy.

I think that a multi-platform strategy would

help my magazine complete its main task to

promote new and under the radar music. By

having this I will have a radio to broadcast

new music and alert my target audience of

these people. Other multi-platform strategy

such as programs/films would interest my

target audience because I believe they would

like to see bands and people being natural,

relaxed and funny.

How will your chosen strategy

impact upon the profit your

magazine will make?

By choosing to distribute my magazine

independently I will not gain any profit from

it as it is a free magazine. However I will

be able to get an income by putting adverts

in my magazine. These adverts will be for

Albums and music artists, I feel this is

appropriate as it is a music magazine.

However The shops where I will be displaying

my magazine will also feature adverts and

other brands as well.
