APPLICATION
D etTronics Pointw atch IR G as D etectors are p rovided w ith m ultiple standard gassignal processing prog ram
setting s. These setting s are p rovided for detection and m easurem ent of m ethane, ethane, prop ane, ethylene,
and propylene gases, and are defined as linearizedPointw atch gas m easurem ent outputs. This m eans that the
Pointw atch is capable of providing an analog signal output that is d irectly p roportional to the % LFL concentration
for these gases, provided the prop er gas setting has been selected ,andthe Pointw atch has been calibrated
w ith the p roper calibration g as type. In addition to the five standard gases m entioned , the P ointw atch is capable
of detecting and m easuring m any other hyd rocarbon gases and vapors. A lthoug h linear Pointw atch outputs are
not offered for m ost of these g ases, an accurate g as concentration m easurem ent is easily determ ined by using
a crossreference data sheet defined as a transfer curve*. The transfer curve data sheet is alw ays based up on
the follow ing:1. The data applies to one (1)sp ecific gas/vapor type only.
2. The data is collected at a specific test tem perature**
3. The data com pares actual hazardous gas concentration in % LFL to the Pointw atch signal output
level, using all five standard gas settings.
The transfer data is used to select the optim um Pointw atch standard gas selection setting,and to select Low ,
M edium , and H igh alarm thresholds (using the Infiniti transm itter, EQ P, ELS, R 8471 controllers, or other external
signal receiver) at the correct actuation setpoints. This w ill ensure external alarm response action occurs w hen
required. It is im portant to note that w henever using transfer data, the Pointw atch analog signal output and any
realtim e visual display of that output, such as a digital display or bar graph, w ill be offset by a value show n on
the transfer data curve, and therefore m ust be externally correlated by the view er.
Each gas transfer data form w ill include five (5) different curves (one for each standard linearized output
setting), and are easily identified by referring to the curve legend on the form . The optimum setting/curve isgenerally the one that provides the closest signal correlation across the desired gas measurement range,
and also ensures the offset in the Pointwatch signal output versus gas concentration is an overreading,as opposed to an unsafe, underreading.
Ideally, at 50% of full scale Pointw atch output (12 m A signal level) the detected gas level w ill eq ual 50% LFL gas
concentration, and this relationship w ill rem ain proportional throughout the gas m easurem ent range. In reality
how ever, transfer curve data is nonlinear, and w ill result in varying offset levels from proportional linearity throughout
the g as m easurem ent rang e. See exam ple on the follow ing page.

To use the transfer curve data, find the concentration (in % LFL) for the gas of interest on the horizontal axis of
the graph. Follow the vertical line up from that point until it intersects w ith a gas response curve. From the point
of intersection, follow the horizontal line directly to the left until it intersects w ith the vertical axis of the graph.
The point of intersection w ith the vertical axis represents Pointw atch output (0-100% LFL reading, or 420 m A
proportionally) in resp onse to the actual gas concentration at the installation using that particular linearized
output setting.
In the ab ove exam ple for gasoline (tested at 25C ) vapor detection, the typical recom m ended Pointw atch
standard gas setting and calibration gas to use is propylene. N ote that w hen using this setting and cal gas
type, at 50% LFL gasoline concentration at the job site, the Pointw atch signal output w ill be 50% or 12m A . The
prop ane and ethane setting s w ould not be recom m ended as the signal output level is m uch less than actual
gas concentration in the field. The m ethane and ethylene settings are acceptable, but w ill result in m uch higher
readings than actually is present in the field.
