Tuesday 30 March 2010 Week 10 Term 1
Dear Parents / Carers,
As we reflect back on another successfulterm at the DEM there have been manyachievements and experiences worthcelebrating.On the academic front, students haveenthusiastically been engaging in a widerange of learning activities including;readers’ theatre, literature circles, visualliteracy, open ended maths challenges,problem solving and even designingsustainable homes.Children have also participated inworkshops for cooking, music, puppetry,visual arts, drama and Mandarin.Camps and excursions enjoyed this terminclude the Creative Arts Camp, theLeadership Camp, the Stage threeMuseum excursion and of courseKindergartens’ Teddy Bears Picnic.Our community has had manyopportunities to meet, mingle, learn andplan through events such as; the highlysuccessful Welcome BBQ, the My SchoolInformation Night, Parent TeacherInformation nights and of course theP&C meetings.Healthy minds need healthy bodies andso teachers and parents at the DEM havethis term been encouraging the studentsto continue participating in fitnessactivities that support a healthy lifestyle.This has included; gymnastics, the Zenmartial arts program, ride to school day ,the annual swimming carnival, DEMbreakfasts and of course participation bymany in the DEM basketball competition.The term has definitely been a busy,productive and enjoyable one. before school when our school bandhelp celebrate the end of term byperforming in the playground with theirHot Cross Buns Easter Performance at8.00am.
Website UpdateAs mentioned last week our new websitehas been launched and we arecommitted to ensuring that it meets theneeds of the community. The website isan off-the-shelf DET package that allowsthe school to easily customise content(not layout) but also allows teachers tokeep their focus on the thing thatmatters most - the education of yourchildren. Ensuring the effectiveness ofthe website calendar has been our firstpriority as we realise that for manyworking parents this is essential.Towards this aim, this week we havecontacted the DET with regards to howthe website calendar can be modified sothat the events are signposted withclearer headings. Next term our focuswill be to ensure that families haveaccess via the website to not only theDEM newsletter but also to an onlineterm newsletter from each grade. Thesegrade newsletters will have timetables,important dates and also informationregarding grade teaching and learningprograms. Please feel free to emailsuggestions regarding the types ofinformation you would like to see on thewebsite so that we can continue toimprove on our school communication.myra [email protected] website address is;

40km/h school zones
The 40km/h school zone slows traffic in the vicinity of the school.
Most 40km/h school zones operate between 8am and 9:30am and from 2:30pm till 4pm. The 40km/h school zone speed limit must be observed even if school children cannot be seen.
A 40km/h school zone operates on all gazetted school days including staff development days (pupil free days).
While some schools may operate on different term dates, school zone speed limits MUST be adhered to during NSW Government determined school terms.
Gazetted school term dates for 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 are listed below.
Gazetted school term dates can be found on the RTA website and
the websites of the NSW Board of Studies and the NSW Department of Education and Training.
Western Division
A small number of schools in the Western Division of NSW commence the school year one week later than schools in the remainder of the state.
Non-standard 40km/h school zone times
There are a small number of non-standard school zone times in NSW. Red signs at these schools display the non-standard times which apply.
The minimum penalty for speeding in an operating 40km/h school zone is a $141 fine and the loss of 2* demerit points.
Dragon's teeth road markings
To increase motorists’ awareness of 40km/h school zones, triangular dragon’s teeth road markings will indicate that the vehicle is entering a school zone.
