Seriously FunnyThis term, students in Year 8 focused on humour as a tool thatnot only entertains, but persuades. Students began the unit byconsidering what makes them laugh. They were then shownsegments from Charlie Chaplain’s ‘The Adventurer’ and Laureland Hardy’s ‘The Music Box’ to highlight how humour is bothpersonal and reflects the culture and time in which it exists.Predictably, students did not find these iconic comedians asfunny as what their early twentieth century counterparts wouldhave.

Throughout the unit, students studied types of humour and thedevices that can create humour, like satire, puns, allusion, irony, parody and spoofs. In particular, they observed the way satire isused in a variety of mediums like performances, speeches andcartoons. They also considered whether satire can sometimesbe taken too far. The class asked itself, ‘Are there some thingsthat should not be made fun of?’ The response was aresounding yes, but opinions differed on what should andshould not be at the mercy of satire.

Students spent much time examining cartoons and thetechniques cartoonists use to convey a message. Studentswere required to identify an issue that they felt was ironicor susceptible to satire and produce a cartoon that capturedthe issue. It was great to see students so engaged in thetask with many producing humorous, yet thought-provoking,cartoons. I commend Year 8 students on their interest andeffort throughout the unit. Well done!

Celebrate Creative Expression

“Right now a moment of time is passing by…wemust become that moment” – Paul Cezanne

There have been many creative highlights throughout Semester2, and many moments shared and artistically expressed. As theyear is coming to a close, I reflect back on the collaborativework amongst teachers and students that show their creativityin many ways and using traditional art methods and theexploration of technology to express their achievements.

In November, Year 4 and 5 captains presented someinteresting facts on the Music component studied in Term 4.The demonstration of the percussion instruments by thestudents highlighted the importance of sound, rhythm and beat.

October saw the completion of the second outdoor mural – anabstract piece of brilliant colour. Students in Year 9 assistedwith this project. It hangs near the entranceway of the mainoffice area. See if you can locate your student name and theirteacher’s name in the piece. Also, Year 9 had the opportunityto view the Arts and Technology Exhibition at the CatholicRegional College site. This was very impressive. Year 8students focused on creating 3D Earth models which bridgedScience, ICT, Maths and Art (STEAM Program). The workshopran during Design and Technology Week and was verysuccessful. The Performing Arts workshop at MSC had as itsfocus the play-making process which Year 8 students were apart of.

Year 5 Exhibition stations were amazing yet again. Mentors, teachers and students teamed up to create the best workso far. This exhibition was enjoyed by many. It also highlightsthe PYP requirements to work collaboratively and build uponresearch and self-management skills.

In September, the character parade and play 'Bad Luck Duck'saw students in 1A don colourful animal masks. Prep Adelivered the Quran poem with confidence and Year 2s withdecorative garden hats presented a song in general assembly. All these great acts highlight the Performing Arts component atCSC.

Behind the Eid celebrations, many staff worked tirelessly on thefun activities which featured at our campus. A colourful bannercreated by the Year 7 and Year 9 students hung proudly. In theB3 room, many props and frames for the photo shot and facepainting organised by Year 7 was a hit with the junior students. The balloonist, cake decorating and the jumping castle andoutdoor physical sport activities was great for all.

The school community was invited to be part of SLC and parentteacher interviews which gave parents/guardians insight intotheir child’s progress. In the C 11 room, the Middle Schoolpresented an interactive English piece by the Year 8 group,Stem project by the Science faculty and all our interior wallspace showcased the creative work accomplished by manyyear levels.

The Art Club focus was on sustainability and recycling.Students love this space for creating all sorts of things. 2D and3D objects in all kinds of shape, colour and texture have beendesigned. Students learn to be mindful of the resource that wehave and not to be wasteful.

In July, Year 7 students constructed very detailed dioramas tofocus on the importance of Hajj. This display was wonderful.Students did a great job in presenting many facts. It was viewedby many parents throughout the morning session. Fantasticfeedback was received.

Lastly, a big thank you goes to all our dedicated teachers andstaff members that share and support this ongoing creativityacross all faculty areas.
