Opportunity for players and umpsBetween the Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s, the Young Guns Series and Community Umpiring Week, there’s plenty happening in AFL Victoria’s competitions at the moment. The VFL Women’s season begins this weekend with a new look to its group of participating clubs.

Darebin Falcons, Melbourne Uni and Geelong Cats return from 2017 along with Hawthorn (previously known as Box Hill Hawks) and Western Bulldogs (VU Western Spurs), while Carlton, Casey Demons, Collingwood, Essendon, NT Thunder, Richmond, Southern Saints and Williamstown have acquired licences for 2018.

These additions will help create more state-league opportunities for women across Victoria just as the AFL Women’s competition prepares to introduce six new clubs over its next two seasons.

Meanwhile, opportunity is the name of the game in the inaugural men’s Young Guns Series, the first match of which is played on Saturday at Avalon Airport Oval before the Werribee vs Collingwood Peter Jackson VFL clash.

In previous years, a single Young Guns Game in September has given players aged 21 and under that haven’t received suff icient opportunity to show their wares to AFL club recruiters at VFL, TAC Cup or local level to do so on a bigger stage.

This year however, Young Guns squad members will enter a program overseen by VFL coaching games record-holder Gerard FitzGerald and play in an expanded three-game series.

When it comes to opportunity in our state-league competitions, let’s not forget the umpires that have oft en worked their way up through the ranks in community football to reach the level they’re at now.

This round aligns with AFL Community Umpiring Week, which is dedicated to recognising and thanking community umpires for the significant role they play in Australian football. Without them, the players we admire and love to watch on the field wouldn’t have a game to play in.

FRANKSTON vs NORTHERN BLUES – Saturday 2.10pm @ SkyBus Stadium

[LIVE on Channel 7]

Peter Jackson VFL preview – Round 5We talk to Frankston senior coach Adam Skrobalak ahead of his team’s clash with the Northern Blues and take a look at the other matches in Peter Jackson VFL Round 5.

LAST ENCOUNTER

2016 Rd 9 @ IKON Park: Northern Blues 15.15 (105) d Frankston 9.11 (65)

FORM COMING IN

Frankston lost its third game for 2018 last week against Williamstown, unable to back up its first win in almost two years in Round 3. The Northern Blues remain winless aft er losing to Collingwood, North Melbourne and then Port Melbourne last week.

KEY QUESTION

Can the Dolphins keep Northern’s mobile forwards in check? Frankston’s experienced former AFL defender Jake Batchelor will need to marshal a young back line that will likely have to match up on dynamic Blues goalkickers such as Jarrod Garlett, Josh Hill, Jed Lamb, Kym Lebois and Jesse Palmer.

KEY STAT

Frankston might have an advantage in the contests, with Northern struggling to win the ball in close so far in 2018. The Blues are a clear last in the VFL for average contested possessions, winning 18 per game less than the 10th-ranked Dolphins, who are led in this category by Will Fordham and Nathan Scagliarini.

HOME CLUB’S PERSPECTIVE

Frankston senior coach Adam Skrobalak on the club’s

rollercoaster season so far:

“It was a feeling of relief for some that we were able to win a game (against North Melbourne in Round 3), but it was definitely a proud feeling knowing all the work that had gone in off the field as well as from the coaches and players. Our off ence really worked that day. Our guys had the confidence to play the way we wanted to play, and although we’ve done that for periods of other games, we haven’t really put it together for four full quarters.”

On the Dolphins players that have impressed so far

this season:

“Jack McHale has been really impressive and his work in traff ic has been fantastic. He’s working to find the ball a little bit more, but when he touches it something always happens. Will Fordham is another one; he’s predominantly been a winger in the past but we’ve been playing him as an inside midfielder and

he’s had a big impact for us. The third one is Corey Rich. He kicked five goals against North Melbourne and has been really lively for us up forward and floating into the midfield with his work rate and intensity around the ball.”

On some of the keys to victory against the Northern Blues:

“We just have to continue working on being able to play our way for longer. That’ll mean pressure on the opposition and defending really strongly, and off the back of our strong defence we’ll look to turn that into attack; that’s been a pillar of our season so far. The Blues have a small, quick forward line and we think they move the ball really well through their wings, so we need to make sure our back six gets the job done but also that they get support from the midfield.”

Frankston’s defence in 2018

ESSENDON vs NORTH MELBOURNE – Saturday 12pm @ Windy Hill

LAST ENCOUNTERNever played.

FORM COMING INBefore last week’s bye, Essendon had lost to Collingwood and Williamstown following a big first-round win against Frankston. North Melbourne recorded its second VFL win against Coburg in Round 4 aft er suff ering its first loss to Frankston the previous week.

KEY QUESTIONWhich team will win first use of the ball at stoppages? Kangaroos ruckman Braydon Preuss looms as a literally huge factor in this contest, his tapwork helping midfielders like Nash Holmes and Paul Ahern clear the ball from congestion. With Matthew Leuenberger out, Sam Draper may have to carry the load for the Bombers.

KEY STATEssendon leads the VFL in clearances per game primarily on the back of the work of Dylan Clarke (seventh in the competition for average clearances). North Melbourne ranks fourth in this category, however, and the midfield battle looms as crucial to each team’s chances.

BOX HILL HAWKS vs SANDRINGHAM – Saturday 2pm @ Box Hill City Oval

[LIVE on 3WBC radio]

LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 15 @ Trevor Barker Beach Oval: Box Hill Hawks

22.10 (142) d Sandringham 14.11 (95)

FORM COMING INBox Hill remains undefeated aft er accounting for

Williamstown, Frankston and then Coburg before

a bye last week. Aft er two wins to start the season,

Sandringham suff ered its first defeat against Port

Melbourne two weeks ago before a Round 4 bye.

KEY QUESTIONCan the Zebras restrict Box Hill’s ability to move the

ball in space? Sandringham is the top tackling team in

the VFL and their leading tacklers Kade Answerth, Dylan

Weickhardt, Ben Paton and Jack Lonie will need to be

in the faces of Hawks playmakers responsible for their

team’s precise brand of ball movement.

KEY STATThe Zebras will fancy their chances of winning enough of

the ball to prevent Box Hill from controlling possession.

With Answerth, Myke Cook and David Armitage leading

the way, Sandringham is the competition’s top-ranked

team for average contested possessions – winning 23

more per game than the 11th-ranked Hawks.

WERRIBEE vs COLLINGWOOD – Saturday 5pm @ Avalon Airport Oval

LAST ENCOUNTER

2017 Rd 16 @ Etihad Stadium: Collingwood 15.12 (102) d Werribee 11.4 (70)

FORM COMING IN

Werribee fell to a 1-3 record aft er suff ering a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Richmond in Round 4.

Collingwood had a bye last week aft er a victory over Essendon when it improved its record to 2-1.

KEY QUESTION

Can Werribee do more when in possession this week? The Tigers had 97 more disposals than

Richmond last week but could only generate 10 fewer inside-50s in a 38-point loss. Poor disposal at times

cruelled their chances, and the Magpies – like Richmond – are strong tacklers who can also force key

turnovers.

KEY STAT

Control of the ball in space might be the name of the game in this contest, with Werribee the top-ranked

team in the VFL for uncontested marks per game and Collingwood ranked third. The team that can best

restrict easy kicking options for its opponent will go a long way to winning the match.

* ROUND 4 BYE – Casey Demons, Geelong, Port Melbourne

FOOTSCRAY vs RICHMOND – Saturday 7pm @ VU Whitten Oval

LAST ENCOUNTER

2017 Rd 4 @ Etihad Stadium: Footscray 17.16 (118) d Richmond 17.9 (111)

FORM COMING INRichmond remains undefeated aft er easily accounting for Port Melbourne, the Casey Demons and then Werribee last week. Footscray fell to a record of 1-2 with a close loss to Geelong a week before having a Round 4 bye.

KEY QUESTIONCan the Bulldogs withstand Richmond’s renowned pressure? The Tigers don’t need much of the ball to generate winning scores – they had 97 fewer disposals in a 38-point defeat of Werribee last week. Instead, they just pressure the opposition into error, so Footscray’s prime-movers will need to be clean and composed with their disposal.

KEY STATEff ectiveness once inside 50 has been a key diff erence between these teams in 2018, with Richmond able to generate a score from 59 per cent of its inside-50s and the Bulldogs from just 48 per cent of entries. Footscray might still be without leading goalkicker Angus Monfries (hamstring), which wouldn’t help its cause.

COBURG vs WILLIAMSTOWN – Sunday 1pm @ Piranha Park

[VFL website LIVE STREAM / VFL Live]

LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 16 @ Piranha Park: Williamstown 16.23 (119)

d Coburg 8.6 (54)

FORM COMING INWilliamstown’s victory over Frankston in Round 4

continued an up-and-down season that now sits at a

record of 2-2. Coburg is still chasing its first win aft er

suff ering a fourth loss at the hands of North Melbourne

last week.

KEY QUESTIONIs Ben Jolley’s return the jolt Williamstown’s

season needed? The former Seagulls captain played

his first game for 2018 against the Dolphins last week,

recording 23 disposals and seven tackles. The Lions

haven’t fared well at stoppages this season and Jolley’s

presence in Williamstown’s midfield makes life tougher.

KEY STATCoburg is ranked last in the VFL for clearances per

game and has to contend with Seagulls hard-nuts

Michael Gibbons, Willie Wheeler and Adam Marcon at

stoppages in this match . Key Lions ball-winners Liam

Hunt, Ben Allan and Nick Mellington will need to be at

the top of their games.

The best emerging talent in the Peter Jackson VFL and TAC Cup will be on show in the AFL Victoria Young Guns Series.

AFL Victoria Young Guns Series

The series focuses on players aged 21 and under and will provide chances for squad members to further develop their game and showcase their skills in front of AFL recruiters. As the series progresses, there will be an opportunity to add talented community footballers to the squads.

The new Young Guns program will be overseen by VFL coaching games record holder Gerard FitzGerald, who brings 21 years of state-league football experience at VFL (North Ballarat, Casey, Port Melbourne) and TAC Cup (GWV Rebels) level to the role.

“The annual Young Guns game has developed into an important match over the years to provide added exposure for the players selected and has been recognised in the football landscape as a must-see game,” FitzGerald said.

“This year we have expanded the program with the aim to keep players engaged and on the radar of AFL clubs as they continue to develop and progress.”

Priority in the Young Guns series will be given

to players who are yet to play regular senior VFL

football, ahead of members of the squad already

earning regular VFL selection.

FitzGerald will not only support the players in the

program, but play a role in assisting the coaching

groups that have been established (see the

respective coaching panels on the page opposite).

“We have done our best to recognise staff who we

think have put some hard yards in and have the

potential to progress and have a role at a higher

level, like we have with the players,” FitzGerald said.

Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s preview – Round 1This weekend the new-look Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s kicks off for season 2018, with 13 teams and 16 rounds. As has been the case the previous two seasons, the Darebin Falcons are the reigning premiers, with a number of new AFL-aligned sides set to try and challenge the competition leaders’ mantle.

SOUTHERN SAINTS vs CARLTON – Saturday 11.15am @ Skybus Stadium

THE COACHES

The Saints have appointed experienced women’s and VFL coach Peta Searle to the role, with the aim of leading a St Kilda side into the AFL Women’s competition in 2020. Searle has experience in the former VWFL competition at Darebin, was an assistant at Port Melbourne and has been a development coach at St Kilda since 2014. While Daniel Harford has been named Carlton’s new AFL W coach, the appointment of the club’s VFL W coach was still being finalised leading up to Round 1.

THE LISTS

The Saints focused on recruiting the majority of their newly-established list from the local region, with their home in the south-east corridor of Melbourne. Former AFL W Collingwood player Georgia Walker was the club’s first signing and named the inaugural captain. The side has no current AFL W-listed players in 2018.

The Blues have been able to retain a number of their AFL W list to establish the VFL W list for 2018. Darebin pair Darcy Vescio and Lauren Arnell move to Carlton, so too Melbourne Uni trio Gab Pound, Maddy Keryk and Nic Stevens. The club has also provided a home for former Cranbourne player Kate Gillespie-Jones and former Seaford and inaugural VFL W Rising Star Sarah Hosking.

COLLINGWOOD vs WILLIAMSTOWN – Saturday 2.30pm @ Warrawee Park

THE COACHES

Former teammates at the St Kilda Sharks will meet first-up as new coaches in VFL W, with Penny Cula-Reid (Collingwood) and Amy Catterall (Williamstown) to lead the new teams on the block. Cula-Reid has been a development coach with the Magpies’ AFL W side, while Catterall was an assistant coach at the Sharks in 2017.

THE LISTS

The Magpies have been able to include the bulk of their AFL W talent, with the likes of Steph Chiocci, Chloe Molloy, Emma Grant (all ex-Diamond Creek), Sarah D’Arcy, Jaimee Lambert (both ex-Eastern Devils), Britt Bonnici and Ruby Schleicher (both St Kilda Sharks) joining the VFL team.

The Seagulls focused on local-league talent in its recruiting early but were able to announce some key AFL W signings late, with Collingwood pair Jess Duff in (ex-Diamond Creek) and Jasmine Garner (ex-St Kilda Sharks) joining the club.

DAREBIN vs NT THUNDER – Saturday 12pm @ Preston City Oval

THE COACHES

Jane Lange enters her third year as senior coach at Darebin and has the envied coaching record of having won two premierships from her two seasons as coach. Tim Weatherald is the inaugural NT Thunder VFL W coach, having spent the last three years in the Northern Territory in a variety of coaching roles.

THE LISTS

The Falcons still have a strong list entering another season defending a premiership, despite a number of notable departures. Libby Birch and Katie Brennan have headed to their AFL W-aligned club the Western Bulldogs, while Darcy Vescio and Lauren Arnell have moved to Carlton and Daisy Pearce is taking a season off from the VFL W. Jess Dal Pos returns from GWS and the club has retained a number of Melbourne players including Karen Paxman, Elise O’Dea and Lauren Pearce.

NT Thunder has established a list combining experienced talent from the Northern Territory and Adelaide. Crows’ premiership player Angela Foley will lead the club as captain, with her and teammate Chelsea Randall among 19 Adelaide AFL W players on the list. The club has also signed GWS Giant Emma Swanson.

VV

The Darebin Falcons have won back-to-back VFL Women’s premierships

News

Top-of-the-table clashThe Geelong Falcons and Northern Knights will meet at St Mary’s Oval in Geelong on Sunday in a battle of undefeated TAC Cup Girls teams. Both sides are two wins and significant percentage clear of the Sandringham Dragons and Eastern Ranges with two games to play, with the competition’s top two teams progressing directly to the inaugural TAC Cup Girls Grand Final at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday May 19.

For the Falcons and Knights to miss the grand final, whichever team loses on Sunday would also need to lose its Round 9 match by a big margin and the Dragons or Ranges would need to win both their remaining games by similarly big margins.

U18 and U16 ChampsThe training program for the 2018 Vic Country and Vic Metro female academies begins right after the TAC Cup Girls Grand Final is played on Saturday May 19.The Country and Metro squads at both U18 and U16 level will first come together to train at IKON Park on Sunday May 20 before another session at Windy Hill on Sunday June 3.

The NAB AFL Women’s U16 Championships begins for both Country and Metro in separate games in Albury and Horsham respectively the following Sunday, with Country then facing Metro at both U18 and U16 level on Saturday June 16 at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong.

The remaining NAB AFL Women’s U18 Championships fixtures will be played on the Gold Coast, with Country and Metro playing in three games on Monday July 9, Wednesday July 11 and Friday July 13.
