Werribee midfielder Tom Gribble streeted the field to claim the 2019 J.J. Liston Trophy by
eight votes at Monday night’s VFL Best & Fairest celebration at Crown Palladium.
The prolific 24-year-old polled in 13 of his 18 Hard Yakka
/ Totally Workwear VFL home-and-away games to finish
the count on 25 votes – the highest winning tally for the
competition’s best-and-fairest award since Shane Valenti
polled the same number for Port Melbourne in 2011.
Only two players have polled more votes to win the
Liston Trophy in the last 39 years – Sam Mitchell (Box
Hill Hawks) with 31 votes in 2002 and Michael Frost
(Werribee) with 32 in 1998.
Gribble finished the count well clear of Footscray’s
AFL-listed on-baller Rhylee West (17 votes), with North
Melbourne AFL-listed ruck Tom Campbell placing
third (15) and Werribee’s Michael Barlow, Port
Melbourne’s Shannen Lange and Box Hill’s Marc
Pittonet (14 apiece) tying for fourth place.
In his fift h season at Avalon Airport Oval following one
year with Geelong’s VFL team and time in the Geelong
Falcons under-18 program, Gribble averaged 30
disposals, 15 contested possessions, seven clearances,
five tackles and five inside-50s per game as well as
kicking nine goals for the fift h-placed Tigers.

FULL BEST & FAIREST AND TEAM OF THE YEAR REVIEWS NEXT WEEK IN THE GRAND FINAL RECORD
Darebin Falcons ruck Lauren Pearce won the 2019 Lambert-Pearce Medal for the
Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s best and fairest player at Monday’s VFL Best & Fairest Night
at Crown Palladium.
The Melbourne AFLW-listed 26-year-old claimed
Darebin’s third Lambert-Pearce Medal in the VFLW’s four-
year history, polling 18 votes to join Daisy Pearce (2016)
and Katie Brennan (2017) as winners of the honour from
the Falcons.
Pearce earned votes from the umpires in seven of her
10 home-and-away matches this season, polling three
votes five times, two votes once and one vote on another
occasion.
She finished clear of Richmond AFLW-listed
playmaker Monique Conti (16 votes), who was
joined in the top five on the leaderboard by Essendon
40-year-old Cecilia McIntosh (14), Melbourne Uni
ball-winner Ash Riddell (12) and Casey Demons co-
captain Bianca Jakobsson (10).
In a campaign in which she played her 50th VFLW
match for Darebin (in Round 13), Pearce averaged 19
disposals, 16 contested possessions, 33 hitouts and eight
clearances per game, leading the competition for total
contested possessions and also ranking in the top four
players for hitouts, hitouts-to-advantage and clearances –
despite missing four games for the 11th-placed Falcons.
