By Carol Taylor M.S.W., L.C.S.W.
Elder safety and well-being is everyone’s responsibility. This includes medical and law enforcement professionals as well as every person on the road. This is not the sole responsibility of the family nor should it be. For some elders, curtailing or eliminating driving privileges can be one of the most difficult losses they experience. There are few topics more emotionally charged in families than addressing impaired elder drivers and families need support and direction at this time. Along with no longer operating a motor vehicle come other losses that driving may represent – feelings of autonomy and independence, continuity of lifelong patterns, social engagement, sense of self-confidence, self-worth and self-esteem. Medical professionals have a unique and strong role in elder safety and driving. The Wyoming Department of Transportation’s form, Driver Medical Evaluation, FSDI-915, is available on-line and has explicit instructions for completion. This form can only be completed by a licensed MD, DO or mid-level practitioner. For more info, visit website www.dot.state.wy.us/home/driver_license_records at the Medical and Vision tab. Also WYDOT Medical Department staff at 307.777.4800 Option 5, can answer questions medical professionals may have. This form can be completed at any time (not just with driver’s license renewal) and responsibly should be done if an person’s condition is such that driving may be a danger to self and/or others. Family members and concerned others can download this form and take it to your doctor for completion which will initiate the WYDOT process for evaluating proper licensing. Law enforcement can submit a Request for Re-examination of Driver form to WYDOT Driver Services requesting review of a licensed driver. This form can only be completed by law en-forcement officers. Finally, any and every community member who observes an impaired driver can and should call local law enforcement dispatch or 911 with a description of what you saw, make/model and color of vehicle, where you saw it and direction driver is heading. Dispatch will then in-form law enforcement of the concern and highway safety issue.
