Sumptuous grounds and a custom Hutch Johnson Design meld with timeless materials to make this stunning home a Hope Valley icon. Originally constructed in 1936, the home has evolved with the times while maintaining the classic elements of a Southern Manor. The precisely landscaped and manicured entry speaks to a bygone era, while the modernized, brick home makes a statement clearly in the present. This carefully considered unification of historical significance and contemporary ideals makes it truly timeless.

One of the first impressions on entering is the pervasiveness of natural light. The oversized openings between living spaces and well-placed windows foster a feeling of being connected to interior and exterior living spaces. Small details make big statements and the feeling is of comfortable luxury. Pleasing neutrals and bold but elegant tones add warmth and interest to the home.

“When the previous owners bought the home, it was a gracious Georgian, that was in dire need of renovation and restoration. The new owners loved the property and could envision taking the existing “good bones”

of the house, and make into a home they’d love. We literally surrounded the existing house onthe two sides and the rear with new heated space, and added the double porches to the front.”

Hutch Johnson, architect

As with most classic Southern homes, the entry foyer is flanked by the formal living and dining areas. Generously framed doorways, dentil moulding, and a prominent, oversized fireplace are all subtle reminders of the home’s history. Guests would have been entertained here among the finery of the home. Though the traditional living room has not been as popular in more modern construction, the opening to the gallery keeps it more connected to the rest of the home, thereby creating a more relaxing atmosphere.

An entry to the south hall guides you into the gracious library.

G ardenStep through the foyer into the gallery, and the vista will take your breath away. The garden room defies all expectations. Light reigns while elegant windows and doors, quite literally, make the grounds an integral element of the living space. From every point throughout the room, a new vista becomes the prominent focal point. No matter the time of year, this is the ideal place to enjoy the rich colors and changes of the seasons.

“My favorite space is the Gathering Room on the back, with the raised clerestory windows, lattice ceiling and a beautiful porch and stone

inlay floor. While located on the North side of the home, there is an abundance of light due to the large amount of glass on three different

sides.” Hutch Johnson, architect

The vaulted ceiling in the garden room is appropriately accented by high windows and a coffered ceiling. This sense of height demonstrates a more modern flair.

Note the unique floor pattern. It was specifically designed in the diamond pattern to direct the eye to the exterior spaces.

The formal dining room offers classic style with modern embellishments. Oversized

wainscoting and dentil moulding are beautifully complemented by an intricate

center medallion. The ceiling, painted by Carrboro artist Stephen White, adds

elegant whimsy. His distinct style is easily recognizable and demonstrative of his skill.

Additional wall and ceiling art of his can be spotted throughout the home.

This master suite is truly an in-home retreat. Sized to comfortably handle oversized furniture, it also opens to a private porch. As an additional sitting area including a fireplace, it is a place for all seasons. The dressing room, master bath and exceptional, dual closets make the room

complete.

The rich mahogany study is one of the original elements of the home. Note the intricate, carved details of the moulding and fireplace surround. The marble surround fireplace anchors the back wall, and well-placed windows allow natural light to accentuate the natural wood. It is easy to equally envision working and relaxing in this inviting environment. And of course, no proper study is complete without ample bookshelves.

“The current owners went on to make this home into a place for their family, adding a wonderful porch with double sided fireplace, and exercise room, and claiming the attic above the garages and creating and incredible chesnutt paneled “Game Room”.

E very room for an active engaging family Each room caters uniquely to a different sensibility. The game room with wood paneled walls is a gathering place for the friendly round of pool or an intense poker game. The media room begs for movie nights and Super Bowl parties. Exercise in the workout room, and then pop downstairs to relax at the bar with a frosty beverage. The opportunities are truly endless.

“My personal goal with all the renovations, was

to help restore the glamour that was

once this home, and when it was

all done and I was finished, it didn’t

appear I had ever been there. When I work on a house

of such distinction, my goal is to

respect the home and let it lead the

design process.”

Hutch Johnson

There are four additional bedrooms in the home (not pictured), each generously sized and well-appointed. The fifth bedroom on the main level can also be easily used as an additional office space. But one of the most exceptional elements of this home and its design is the consistent incorporation of the elegant grounds into the interior living areas. Walking through each room highlights the careful planning and execution that was necessary to marry the natural world with modern conveniences. It is a true Manor that offers classic grace and elegance while never seeming ostentatious. In the heart of Hope Valley, it is easy to comprehend why this home is considered a landmark.
