*What are we to think of human leaders? What are we to do with them? *Seems like the most common approach is to either worship or despise them. *Or worship...then despise them. *Not just America, now...all cultures, throughout history have struggled with balance in this area. *In Scriptures we are to pray for leaders (1 Tim 2) and submit to them (Rom 13) as long as they don't attempt to compel rebellion to God. *Romans 13:1-7 *Paul gives both principled and pragmatic reasons to follow leaders. 1. God ordains the authorities -So we submit because of conscience 2. They have the right to punish people who do evil -So we submit to avoid punishment *We are to submit (to stand under) authorities because we have an understanding of God's arrangement of human affairs. *Normally submission means we obey what the one in authority says...however at the top of the hierarchical structure, in the uppermost authority is God. *We submit to those in authority over us in light of our ultimate submission to God. *I worked at Y while I was in seminary, one day during a conversation with the director, my boss, I told him one of my goals was to make him successful...he said..."Yes, because you want my job." *Then he thought and said..."But you don't want my job do you?...So why do you care if I am successful?" *As people under the authority of Jesus we are to look to make those in authority over us successful, to follow them as unto the Lord.

3

*But we are not to follow them if they betray the one from all authority is derived...God. *In the military you must obey every lawful order...the law (given by congress, constitution, president)...out ranks the commander over you. *So if given an unlawful order...you are obliged to disobey it. *Even in the commander in chief some new law told you to do something that God forbids, we are obliged to disobey...because ultimately, God stands at the top of all chains of command. *One of Paul's applications in Romans 13 was that he encouraged believers to pay their taxes. *There was at the time he wrote his letter...an anti-government movement against taxes (not much has changed in 2000 years). *So if the rulers asked you to deny Christ you are not required to obey, in fact you are required to disobey...Christ outranks them. *If they ask you to pay taxes...pay the taxes. *Jesus said..."Give to Caesar what is his, and to God what is his." *Balance...the key to navigating a world with human (and imperfect authorities) is to keep orientated to the ultimate authority...the Lord Jesus is the true and final king. *This is why Christians even in oppressive societies like the old USSR made the best and the most dangerous citizens. *Best...because they would pay taxes, be loyal, do what is right even when the law was not looking. *Dangerous...because ask them to pledge total allegiance to human powers, or compromise conviction for the state...they would die first. *This has been true throughout history. *Today we are in Ps 110...called a Royal Psalm...a Psalm of Kings. *One that Jesus applied to himself as did other NT writers.

4

*So let's start with the origins of Israel's kings and work our way to Ps 110. The Origins of Kings *What was the purpose of kingship in the OT? *When Israel became a nation at Mt. Sinai (last week, the giving of the covenant laws)...there was no human king, God was King. *They had leaders...Moses, Joshua, then the Judges...but God was clearly King. *This continued until the final judge, Samuel was old and it was clear that his sons were fools...the people feared for their future. *They had no reason to fear, God had taken care of them...when they remained faithful to the covenant. *They were being pressed from all sides by enemies...they believed they could have hope for the future only if they had a king. 1 Sam. 8:20 *"We want a king to lead us!" They cried. *"You do know this king will conscript your sons and daughters in service to him, and he will tax what you produce." Said Samuel *"We don't care, we want a king over us so we will be like other nations with a king to lead us to go out before us and fight out battles." *"Give them a King." said God. *Their first King would be crazy *The second King would eventually stay home while his troops were at war and commit adultery and murder (so much for going before them in battle) *The third King would be a tax and spend ruler of epic proportion...with hundreds of concubines...and large palaces, and gardens. *The fourth King was a fool and would split the Kingdom in two. *The request for a king was not in itself wrong...in fact many years earlier, God had already laid out the principles for how they were to select their king.(Deut 17.)

5

*It was the attitude behind their request for a king that was sinful...fear not faith was driving the request. *In addition their approach to selecting the king was wrong...they did not seek the Lord's direction in the process. *So by their attitude and their approach in requesting a king, they rejected God as their king. *All this is important because much of the book of Psalms is connected with the institution of kingship in Israel and specifically with David and his dynasty. *David, wrote a good bit of the Psalms...he was the covenant King, and a poetic King...and great king, who failed miserably. *Now jump to the NT and we see that the promises given in Psalms of a son of King David who will sit forever on the throne was referring to Jesus. *Rom. 1:3 Paul wrote that Jesus, "As to his human nature was a descendent of David." *Luke 1:31 the blessing upon Mary was taken from Ps 89: (Here's an angel quoting Psalms to the mother of Jesus) " You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." *Samuel's concern when the people demanded a King...and God said "give them one"...was to establish a human monarchy which would not infringe on God's rule as ultimate king. *So the old prophet gathered the leaders, and led them in a covenant renewal ceremony. *In the same ceremony where he would establish Saul as King... -He led the people in acknowledging their sin in demanding a king. -Then he called on them to reaffirm their trust in Lord. *Essentially..."Here is your king...follow him but do not place your trust in him...trust God."

6

*"If you and your king turn from the Lord, your king will not save you...he will be judged along with you." *This points to the reality that Israel's kings reflected the kingship of God...they served at his pleasure, they ruled because he allowed it. *Their authority...was delegated...it came from the absolute source of all authority. *Saul was a foolish and rebellious king...who had his kingdom taken from him. *It was given to Israel's second King, David...was human and made mistakes...but he had a heart for God. *More importantly...God had a heart and a purpose for him. *God made a special covenant with him...From the line of David...the true King would come. *Let's go to Psalm 110 Psa. 110:1 The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” *God is talking to the King, in this case David. *Be my right hand man (understand the chain of command) and I will give you ongoing victory...I will make your enemies your footstool. *Sometimes, victors would place their feet on the necks of the conquered...thus the idiom: "footstool" *God will make those who opposed this king's authority (and therefore God's authority) a footstool...they will be defeated. *Acts 2:34-35, 1 Cor. 15:25, Eph. 1:20, Col. 3:1, Heb. 1:13, 1 Peter 3:22, Matt 22:41-46, Mark 12:35-37, Luke 20:41-44...all quote this passage and apply it to Jesus as Lord, savior, master. 1Cor. 15:25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. *Jesus will make death his footstool...it was the last enemy he destroyed through his resurrection.

7

2 The LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion; you will rule in the midst of your enemies. *Scepter was the symbol of authority...God extended it out from Jerusalem (Zion) through his chosen King David. 3 Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy majesty, from the womb of the dawn you will receive the dew of your youth. *The people would be enthusiastic, willing followers of this king as long as he remained in his place under God's authority...no need for threat or compulsion...following was going to be a joy. 4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” *The Lord speaks of a coming King who will be a combination "Priest and King" *A Priest goes to God on behalf of the people (mediator) *A King goes out before the people on behalf of God (leader) *David was not to be that King...he could not even build the temple because he had shed too much blood. *This King would be like another "priest/king" from Israel's history...Melchizedek. *Who was this Melchizedek and how does he relate to the coming king? *He is mentioned in three places: Gen.14, Ps 110, and the book of Hebrews *Gen. 14...Abraham, the great father of the nation had just defeated 5 kings and their armies who had come against him. *Kings...not like France, Germany...but city-states, small-localized armies...King of Chicago, KC. *As he was returning from the battlefield a King from Salem (probably Jerusalem) named Melchizedek came out to him as they traveled by.

8

*He also happened to be a priest of God...so a King who lead his people in the world and a priest who lead his people in worship. *He blessed Abram and acknowledged that his victory was because of God. *Then Abram in response gave him a tenth of everything from the spoils of war. *In the book of Hebrews this somewhat shadowy character is seen to have prefigured Christ. *Hebrews 7 is fairly complex...we will not get into the weeds so we can stay on point. *Melchizedek was a Priest/King in History that prefigured Jesus. *Hebrews outlines how this historical figure points forward to the Lord Jesus...and in so doing shows how Jesus is... - Greater than the Law that came from God -Greater than the priests who represented God -Greater than Abraham who was chosen by God. *How can this be? *Jesus is greater because he is at the top of the hierarchy of authority...he is God. *Hebrews says...Jesus is this King/Priest...the one Melchizidek prefigured and that David predicted. 5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath. 6 He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth. 7 He will drink from a brook beside the way; therefore he will lift up his head. *This is violent language but remember this was written during a time of ongoing threats and realities of war...there were often existential threats to the nation and individuals. *God will give victory (life) as long they remained in covenant relationship with him. *This was not a time when wars were far off...where if they lost they would just take their tanks and go home...if they did not defeat their enemy...they would die. *This was life or death...thus the dramatic language...this was real, everything was at stake. *If God did not defeat the enemy...the enemy would defeat them.

9

*The NT will reframe this...in terms of spiritual victory, eternal victory. *Some would say..."Yea, that's weak...they had real victory in real battle...now you Christians look for spiritual, other worldly battle...wimpy stuff." *So where are the victors of those real battles fought and won thousands of years ago? Hundreds of years ago? Fifty years ago? *Right...the same place the victors of battles being fought today will be...dead, gone. *Where are their spoils of war? Spoiled...rusted, rotted, gone. *Where are their medals? Their rank? Their parades? Their statues? *I am not saying that fighting just wars for just causes is unimportant...I saying that its wrong to say they are "really real" and the spiritual is "less real." *The spiritual battle is the real war...it always has been. *Do you really think WWII and its devastation was about Hitler, Stalin, Hirohito? *What about ISIS? *All wars, all battles ultimately are about the reality of the ongoing spiritual war. *2 Cor. 10:3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. *1 Cor. 15:24 Then the end will come, when he (Jesus) hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. *This Psalm 110 King would experience God's presence, protection, power as he stayed under God's authority.

10

*The people in turn would experience God's presence, protection, power as they stayed under God's representative, this King's, authority. *This pointed forwarded to the true King...Jesus...and the real battle...which is spiritual. *He made death his footstool by going to the cross and rising from the dead. *We experience his victory in our lives through submission to his authority over our lives. *The realm of his power in our lives is the realm of his will for our lives. *As we submit to his authority...we experience his victory. *Disorientation: -Is to look at human leaders and see power, authority...people to be feared, envied, in awe of. -Their authority is temporary and borrowed. *Disorientation: -Is to look at human wars...Iraq, Syria, urban streets of America, war on drugs, human trafficking, suicide, wars in families...and fail to see the spiritual reality behind all those wars. *Our cultural experts will never get it right in terms of how to "fix problems", until they understand the spiritual realities behind the physical/relational issues. *Orientation: -Is to see Jesus as the ultimate authority...human leaders come and go...we neither worship them nor disrespect them...we submit to them as appropriate as they stay within the boundaries of the authority delegated to them by God. *John 19:8 When Pilate heard this (that Jesus claimed to be the son of God), he was even more afraid, 9 and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.” 12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free *Pilate had political authority but he was in the presence of real authority...he was afraid to use his delegated authority to do the right thing...

11

*Orientation: -Is to see all wars, at all levels as evidence of spiritual battles...we must move through life putting our confidence in God...not in our own efforts and resources. *Sure we must work, exert real effort and use real resources...against real enemies who want to kill innocents, against addictions that seek to destroy us, and to love, protect our families. *I am not a pacifist...wars sometimes need to be fought, we need military, we need law enforcement. *The war manifests itself in the physical realm...but it does not originate there. *We should war against cancer and addictions and fatherlessness...but we cannot forget that the battle we see is not the only battle that exists...or the place it originates from. *It's not a matter of over spiritualizing or under spiritualizing...its a matter of seeing the world as it is. *A world at war...a war that originates in the spiritual world. *Eph. 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. *What does this mean, what practical application can I take from all this? APPLICATION: *This Psalm, the Bible, the cosmos, human history is about authority. Who or what has the final say, the ultimate right of determination. *Exousia is the Greek word for authority: It is the right to rule, the sphere of influence. *Matt 28...all authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Col. 2:10...who is the head over every power and authority. Col. 2:15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. *Seeing who Jesus is and understanding his authority are two sides of the same coin.

12

*He is Lord, King over the cosmos and human history...when we see who he is...then we understand that his authority is absolute. *He has the unchangeable right to exercise authority over us...he can demand obedience and it is right that he do so. *Jesus is God's word made flesh...divine authority is finalized in him...he is the final authority, the final word. *He taught as one with authority, he lived with authority, the law was under him, demons submitted to him, nature submitted to him, death submitted to him...we must submit to him or live out of line with reality...disorientated to the world as it is. *To live within the realm of his will for your life (authority) is to live within the realm of his power in your life. *What of grace Terry? *His grace, his favor is extended to you and to me and received by faith. *His power in our lives is apprehended and experienced by faith expressed in obedience..."Yes, Lord...I choose to live within the realm of your will for my life" 1. See what you are really seeing... *When you watch the omnipresent election coverage...see temporary leaders who will take the stage for a brief time then soon be rushed off the stage and their places taken by others. *When you see militaries flexing their muscles, refugees driven from homes and countries by the evil egos of men...see real heart breaking reality...but see spiritual war...not just movements of men. *When you battle with temptation, pride, jealousy, addiction...see a war that originates in spiritual realities...a world, our flesh, and a devil in opposition to God. 2. Orient yourself continually to what is real... *Jesus is Lord...this is and will always be the final word.

13

*Now, for a time we can make decisions day to day whether we will submit to his authority or attempt to thrive apart from it. *This is the madness of our sin...why do we do this? It makes no sense. *When humans in rebellion to his authority cry out..."Tyrant, oppressor...you will not take my freedom from me! I will be my own king." *His response is...okay...for now. *But it is insane... *His authority is absolute...and one day every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. *But now, for a time...we are allowed to choose insanity. *And, thankfully, we are offered the opportunity to chose sanity. *Is this all practical? On the way to work I was listening to your sermon from last weekend. As I was driving, and listening, I was also mentally going through the inventory of all the things that were weighing on my mind: Things I had to get done at work. Frustrations with my job. Feelings of inadequacy...as an employee; as a husband; as a father; as a friend. Laments about the upcoming elections. And on and on. A cascade of negative thoughts centered on the sphere of my life. Then, in the sermon, you said our world "is not mostly about us and our struggles and our fears; it's mostly about the glory of God and eternity," and instantly the weight of all those worries lightened. I continued to repeat the phrase and think about the implications of its truth. I began addressing each of my previous worries again, one at a time, but this time I ended each thought by saying "the world is not primarily about (the worry), it's about the glory of God and eternity," and meditating on how the worry fits into the world in light of that view. I can't really explain the feeling of peace, and even joy, that the change in perspective brought. It made all those troubles seem so insignificant. Not eliminated. Not forgotten. They're still on my mind, and I know they still entail responsibilities for me, but they don't hold the same power over me.

14

I've decided this will be a personal discipline of mine from now on. When worries or difficulties or fears enter, I'm going to remind myself that this world is not PRIMARILY about those things. I'm going to focus on what this world IS primarily about, and I'm going to ask myself how that particular circumstance might possibly be useful to God in advancing His glory through this segment of eternity. *He was doing what we see in Col 3. Col. 3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. *He was doing battle...and winning. *He was setting his affections (heart) and his attention (mind) on the reality of the ultimate authority of Christ...the one seated at the right hand of God. *This proved to be enormously practical for my friend...precisely because it is reality...Jesus is Lord, his authority is absolute. *We must set our affection and attention continually on this fact.

SMALL GROUP NOTES Intro: Rom. 13:1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4 For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience. 6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

15

*What are the principles derived from this passage in regards to Christians and Civil authority? *What would be an example of the proper use of Civil disobedience? -Either from history or hypothetical *What might be an improper use of Civil disobedience for a Christian? Read: Psa. 110:0 Of David. A psalm. Psa. 110:1 The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” 2 The LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion; you will rule in the midst of your enemies. 3 Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy majesty, from the womb of the dawn you will receive the dew of your youth. 4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” 5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath. 6 He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth. 7 He will drink from a brook beside the way; therefore he will lift up his head. Discuss: *This is called a "Royal" Psalm. They were used during coronations or in worship to pray for or honor the King as God's representative. *1 Samuel 8 describes the time when Israel wanted a king. You might want to read that chapter together. *The idea of a King was not wrong, in fact it was foretold. What was wrong in their asking for a King? *The Kings were God's delegated authority. When the Kings and the people understood this correctly things worked pretty well. They most often didn't understand this correctly. *Ps 110 deals with the Kings in the original historical context and it also points forward to the Lord Jesus. *Read some of these passages to find applications of this Psalm to Jesus. Acts 2:34-35, 1 Cor. 15:25, Eph. 1:20, Col. 3:1, Heb. 1:13, 1 Peter 3:22, Matt 22:41-46, Mark 12:35-37, Luke 20:41-44

16

*Melchizedek was a priest/king from Salem (likely what would become Jerusalem). He is mentioned in Genesis 14, Psalm 110, and the book of Hebrews (chapters 5,6,7). *The writer of Hebrews used a fairly complex connection between Melchizedek and Jesus. His primary points were that Jesus is a higher authority and is therefore more important than: -The Law -The Priests -Abraham (the father of the Jewish people) *Why do you think it was important for the writer of Hebrews (writing of course to a Jewish audience) to make this point about Jesus? *Ps 110:5-7 speaks of the victory the Lord will give over those who oppose him and his people. *In the New Testament the warfare language switches to spiritual rather than mere physical. Read the following passages... 2 Cor. 1 Cor. 15:24 Then the end will come, when he (Jesus) hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. Eph. 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. *Our struggles, battles are real and manifest in the physical world but what do these passages say about how we are to go about fighting these battles? *There are several ways to become imbalanced in regards to our "battles" what are some of them? *How can we stay balanced in fighting these "battles"?

17

Apply: *This Psalm, the Bible, the cosmos, human history is about authority. Jesus has the final say, the ultimate right of determination. *Jesus said in Matthew 28 that "all authority has been given him." *Where do you struggle with Jesus' authority in your life? *Why do you think this struggle in ongoing? *What might need to happen both internally and externally to submit to his authority in your life in this area?
