Surviving the Holidays

In past years, the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season may have been a time of great anticipation and excitement. But for those people recently

divorced or separated, the prospect of facing the holidays without their spouse may cause anxiety, stress and dread. You are not alone.

St. Paul of the Cross Divorce Support Group Ministry is offering a session on “Surviving the Holidays” for anyone who is divorced or separated. You need

not have participated in the “Journeys” or the “Divorce and Beyond” programs to attend this onetime event.

The session will be held in the Kinane Center on Monday, November 25, 2013 from 7:00 pm to 8:45 pm.

There is no charge for this program. As the Christmas lights and tress are going up, if you find

your emotions going down, consider attending our “Surviving the Holidays” program on November 25th.

Last Session of The CATHOLICISM Series

We will conclude our exploration and study of Fr. Bob Barron's Catholicism programs.

Our last session is: Monday, November 18th

in the Kinane Center

We will view: "World Without End: The Last Things”

The sessions will be at 9:30 am and repeated at 7:30 pm.

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3

Dear St. Paul Parishioners,

In the gospels we encounter some interesting personalities whose lives are changed because of their interaction with Jesus. Last Sunday we heard the story of Zaccheus who has always been fascinating and intriguing to me. Only the Gospel of Luke speaks about him. He was a chief tax collector in a very important and ancient city of Jericho. Obviously he was on the top of his profession and as the gospel story testifies, he was a wealthy man.

Jericho was one of the most lucrative centers for Rome. It lay in the Jordan valley and commanded both the approach to Jerusalem and the crossings of the river which gave access to

the lands east of the Jordan. It had a great palm forest and world-famous balsam groves which perfumed the air for miles around. Its gardens of roses were known far and wide. People called it "The City of Palms." Josephus, the Jewish historian, called it "a divine region," "the fattest in Palestine." The Romans carried its dates and balsam to world-wide trade and fame.

Two things stand out in the story. First, Zaccheus was eager to see Jesus. When he got to the place where Jesus was supposed to pass, the crowd had already gathered. Since he was short he could not see. The only alternative was to climb a tree so that he would have a full view. That is what he did. He climbed a sycamore tree. Grown men do not climb trees. Can you imagine how ridiculous he looked perched on that tree? He did not mind the laughter of the crowd because he not only got to see Jesus; he was able to welcome Jesus to his home.

Second, he was ready to change. When the townspeople grumbled at Jesus going to the house of a well-known sinner, Zaccheus stood tall and declared his readiness to make a radical change. He was prepared to restitute four-fold to anyone that he might have taken advantage of. In his restitution he went far beyond what was legally necessary. Only if robbery was a deliberate and violent act of destruction was a four-fold restitution necessary (Exodus 22:1). If it had been ordinary robbery and the original goods were not restorable, double the value had to be repaid. (Exodus 22:4,7). If voluntary confession was made and voluntary restitution offered, the value of the original goods had to be paid, plus one-fifth (Leviticus 6:5; Numbers 5:7). Zacchaeus was determined to do far more than the law demanded. By his deeds he showed that he was a changed man.

The question for all of us is the same: Are we ready to make the necessary changes in our lives so that we can welcome Jesus into our home? As Catholics it is so easy to just move along from one thing to another, from one sacrament to another. We can get caught up with rules and regulations, rituals and devotions, and forget the heart of our faith. Without our personal encounter with Jesus, nothing else makes sense. Without a personal relationship with the Savior, all the other things will be of no avail.

Just like Zaccheus, are we ready to take Jesus seriously and hence effect some serious changes in our lives? Sometimes the Lord can easily become nothing more than a psychological prop. Max Lucado, a Christian writer, has some poignant words in this regard:

For some, Jesus is a good luck charm. The "Rabbit's Foot Redeemer." Pocket-sized. Handy. Easily packaged. Easily understood. Easily diagrammed. You can put his picture on your wall or you can stick it in your wallet as insurance. You can frame him. Dangle him from your rear view mirror or glue him to your dashboard.

His specialty? Getting you out of a jam. Need a parking place? Rub the redeemer. Need help on a quiz? Pull out the rabbit's foot. No need to have a relationship with him. No need to love him. Just keep him in your pocket next to your four-leaf clover.

For many he's an "Aladdin's Lamp Redeemer." New jobs. Pink Cadillacs. New and improved spouses. Your wish is his command. And what's more, he conveniently reenters the lamp when you don't want him around.

Who is the Christ that I believe in? What changes and sacrifices does He ask of me?

Yours warmly, Fr Britto Pastor

Join the Men’s Club for an interesting discussion on "Living Our Faith Today:

A Catholic Identity Assessment & Planning Process for the 21st Century"

with Dr. Christopher McAtee

A major challenge for the Catholic Church in the United States today is to continue the mission of Jesus Christ in the twenty-first century. The decrease of priests and religious certainly makes things challenging. Likewise, many Catholics are wondering about the relevance of their faith and how to live as a Catholic in the twenty-first century. In order to help Catholic institutions and individuals assess, understand, and develop a plan for living out their faith in today's world the speaker developed a Catholic Identity Assessment and Planning Instrument based on characteristics and traits of Catholic life.

Reflection on Our Mission Trip to Tuba City, Arizona By Mary Hester-Tone

The Navajo/Hopi reservation, in the beautiful but stark Painted Desert, is roughly the size of West Virginia. The land, according to traditional Navajo and Hopi beliefs, is situated between the Four Sacred Mountains and is where the Creator meant for Native American people to live. Native Americans seeking to follow traditional tribal ways are reluctant to relocate from this sacred land. It is a very remote area. If you want a Starbucks or to go to a movie theater, you make an hour and a half drive into Flagstaff for those staples of our Chicago area lives.

The Navajo and Hopi are a brave people who have served our country well in times of need. The reservation is the home of the famous Code Talkers from World War II. The Code Talkers were Navaho Indian soldiers who, using a code they developed based on their native tongue, enabled the Allied forces in the Pacific to freely communicate military plans. Their complex code, never broken by opposing forces, was crucial to the success of the Allies in the Pacific Theater. More recently, Native American bravery in service of our country has been exemplified by St. Jude parishioner, Tuba City resident and Hopi tribe member Lori Piestewa, who was the first female American soldier to die In combat, in Iraq, after the U.S. military allowed female soldiers to participate in combat.

Another fact about the area that I found interesting was that the reservation is dry. No alcohol may be bought or sold on tribal lands. The possession of alcohol in private residences is also illegal. This and other laws on reservation land are enforced by the Navajo police. The tribal police are also deputized state police, but on the reservation these Native American officers are exclusively responsible for enforcing state and tribal laws.

The St. Jude parish religious staff is a dedicated and impressive group of people devoting their lives to the people of the reservation. The parish religious staff's backgrounds include high powered positions with academic institutions, hospital administration, social welfare organizations and private sector finance. The St. Jude's staff have tremendous respect for the beliefs and culture of the Native Americans and minister to people based on need not creed. Their tireless efforts to help their parishioners help themselves, while honoring and respecting the culture and beliefs of the people, made me proud to be part of a Catholic faith that promotes acceptance and tolerance and encourages us to give aid and lift up our fellow man.

I left Tuba City feeling an appreciation for our great American culture, pride in our parish for making an effort to reach out to the wonderful people at St. Jude's and hopefulness that the St. Paul/Tuba City connection will continue to flourish.

The Indian fry bread was pretty awesome too!

our Lord for 10 minutes. Jesus is waiting there for us and it is a good habit to instill in our children.

PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL

THE SHEPHERD IS ALWAYS THERE

St. Teresa said, “Let us be careful never to be at a distance from Jesus our beloved Shepard, nor to lose sight of Him; for

the sheep which are near their Shepherd are always more caressed and better fed.” How appropriate this advice is to suggesting participation in the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel here at St. Paul.

In the Bible we have read that Job was fearful when God hid His face. However, in the Adoration Chapel, Jesus veils His majesty in the Most Blessed Sacrament. This should not cause fear in us

but rather inspire in us greater love and confidence; since it is precisely to increase our confidence and to manifest His love that He conceals himself under the appearance of bread. Who would approach Him with confidence and lay bare one’s affection’s and desires if Jesus appeared on our altar in the splendor of His Glory? (St. Alphonsus de Liguori)

An adorer can feel intimate and comfortable with Jesus in the Chapel because he is invited to be so by our loving Lord. Jesus will not turn His back on our trials, our illnesses, our concerns or our needs. He is the remedy for all of us. The Shepard loves His sheep, will watch over them and will feed them.

But at the other end of life, the elderly, they too are the future of

a people. A people has a future if it goes forward with both elements:

with the young who have the strength and with the elderly

because they are the ones who give life’s wisdom. I have often

thought that we do the elderly an injustice, we set them aside as if

they had nothing to offer us; they have wisdom, life’s wisdom, history’s wisdom, the homeland’s

wisdom, the family’s wisdom. And we need all this!

The 2nd Annual St. Paul of the Cross Roundball Tournament

begins January 5, 2014 in the Morello Parish Life Center gym

This event, co-sponsored by the St. Paul Men’s Club and St. Paul Alumni Association was a huge success in its inaugural year and back by popular demand this year, is sure to continue to be one of the highlights of the year for our school children.

Roundball is a double-elimination basketball tourney for all St. Paul students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Each team will be named after a Catholic university and will be coached by SPC alumni. As was in 2013, we expect hundreds of fans to enjoy the action every evening of the 8-day tournament, which will end with a standing-room-only crowd for the two championship games (boys and girls) and awards ceremony on Monday, January 13th. Please plan on stopping by the Parish Life Center in January to see why the students (and their parents) will get so excited over SPC’s own March Madness. You’ll be impressed – we assure you! To help cover the cost of the tournament, we offer several sponsorship opportunity levels, as detailed on the attached Roundball Sponsorship Form. Please consider becoming a sponsor at any level you feel comfortable. Also, if you have any interest in volunteering during the tourney, please call or email: [email protected]. Thank you for your support of the SPC Men’s Club and the SPC Alumni Association. Sincerely, Mike Stangel Fran O’Malley 773.203.1559 847.254.1277

NURSE’S NOTES……….

A meaningful Veteran’s Day everyone! In addition to honoring our veterans, November is also National Alzheimer’s Disease and National Diabetes month. I don’t know if this was an intentional pairing or if it was accidental, but it is a good pairing because some health professionals think of Alzheimer’s as a type of diabetes. The risk of developing Alzheimer’s is greater if one has diabetes, and at present, neither is curable, but diabetes is manageable while Alzheimer’s is less so.

Today, we will discuss two lesser known problems associated with diabetes; the first has an unusual name, “Dupuytren’s Disease.” This is a diabetes related condition that affects the hands. The palm of the hand has an extra layer of connective tissue which protects the tissue beneath--a kind of shock absorber, which is good because hands are used so frequently. When someone has this disease, the aforementioned connective tissue becomes thickened, almost like a formation of scar tissue. It’s thought that this happens as a result of “glycation,” (when too much blood sugar reacts with protein in the body, which can fuel chronic inflammation and free radical formation). As a result of glycation, it’s thought that an over-production of collagen takes place which can create that thickening of the connective tissue. Collagen is a protein of the body composed of connective tissue fibers. As well, Dupuytren’s disease may have a genetic link; it seems to run in some families. The process usually starts as a small lump in the palm which, over time, can become a cord growing toward the fingers. Happily, it appears to progress slowly but unhappily, it can cause difficulty with the hands functioning. Some folks may lose the ability to drive as they can’t hold the steering wheel, or they can’t use eating utensils like a fork etc. Surgery may be required but the connective tissue may thicken again in the future. Research continues to look for effective medication and prevention methods. We’ll stay tuned. Another somewhat lesser known complication of diabetes is “gastroparesis.” Here the nerves and muscles that should work together to empty the stomach of food we ate, don’t. Diabetes frequently causes difficulty with nerves throughout the body. Gastroparesis can result in pain in the tummy as well as heartburn, bloating, nausea and vomiting. Some unlucky folks also experience diarrhea and/or constipation. Though we don’t hear of this condition frequently, it can affect about 45-50% of diabetics. Health professionals advise eating small meals (about 6 per day) of preferably easy to digest foods like: well cooked--not raw veggies, fruit that is soft and peeled, non whole grain bread, cereal and crackers and low fiber foods. Berries, beans, veggies like Brussel sprouts may not be tolerated. A high protein diet may stress an already stressed tummy. As well, chewing one’s food thoroughly and eating slowly is recommended. High fiber foods can contribute to the formation of a mass (in the tummy) of undigested food. Small, frequent meals that are easy to digest, low in fiber and chewed well can be helpful. It’s good to spread carbohydrate intake out to all meals--a little at a time--to help keep blood sugar lower and more manageable. Until next week let’s remember to pray for all of our veterans, past and present. We owe them our gratitude and respect.

Fondly, Linda Burk, Your Parish Nurse
