Carol Lingard Pirongia’s perfect woman Carol Lingard is the inaugural Mt Pirongia

Perfect Woman. She beat off strong opposition from 19 oth-

er contestants in a searching examination of ‘manly’ skills last Saturday at Pirongia War Memorial Hall.

In the preliminary round these included changing a tyre, chopping wood, driving a stake, lighting a fi re with a sack containing fi ve matches, 10 pieces of the Courier, leaves and kindling.

Six fi nalists qualifi ed to go through to the evening round, where the tasks stepped up a gear.

Contestants had to identify 17 different tools in a toolkit (even Cocksy the builder got three wrong when he tried), fi llet a fi sh, make a fi shing trace, place a condom on a cucumber in the dark and open a beer bottle with a lighter, then drink it.

Spokesperson for the organisers, Debbie Petersen, says the contestants showed an awesome attitude, cheering for each other after they were eliminated.

Winner Carol Lingard (who works at In-land Revenue) received a voucher from The Monastery in Hamilton for a fi ve day retreat, valued at $3,000.

She told the Courier she was rapt to take out the title and put her victory down to life experiences.

“I’m a keen fi sher so fi lleting the fi sh wasn’t too hard, but I’m not so good with knots so making the trace was a challenge.”

Carol and her female partner have lived in the village for about six years.

“She was rapt for me, but a little bit jealous too. I owe a big thankyou to my sponsor, CJJ’s Crystals, who entered me in the event.”

Runner up Bev Old collected an outdoor table from Trojan Furniture and market umbrella from Alexandra Hotel while third placegetter Teresa Kewish was the recipient of a pink toolkit from Hello Dolly containing women’s tools.

“We had wonderful support from sponsors,” says Debbie Petersen.

“The PTA provided a great dinner and Cocksy proved to be a wonderful MC, staying into the small hours.

“It all started with an idea by PTA member Lynda Murcott. She wanted to compete but ended up being one of the organisers.”

A crowd of around 200 had a great time and helped raise several thousand dollars for Pirongia School.

GIVING IT HEAPS: contestants try their hand at a range of skills as they vie for the coveted title of Mt Pirongia Perfect Woman. Photos supplied.

YOUR LETTERS

Heartfelt thanks to the Te Awamutu Volun-teer Fire Brigade in response to my emergency on Guy Fawkes morning.

I woke Monday to an unidentifi ed odour - I wasn’t particularly alarmed at the time but aware something wasn’t ‘quite right’.

About 45 minutes later the smell was stron-ger and I found smoke in the bedroom and the en suite - ironic given that it was Guy Fawkes morning.

The underfl oor heating control panel was blackened and ‘crackling’ in the en suite.

Once I turned the power supply off I realised

the phones no longer worked! - thank god for mobiles.

The 111 response of our volunteers in Te Awamutu is to be congratulated - without their help Monday, I believe there could have been very serious damage and I would like to extend thanks to those who give up their time to serve and support their community.

I have also realised the importance of having realistic insurance cover as we have not up-dated this for quite some time.

Once again thank-you.JENNY FORSTER

Leave median alone but fi x footpath camber

I too have strong feelings on the proposed up-grading of the CBD of Te Awamutu.

What a crazy idea to bulldoze the median or even to narrow it.

Ashley Reid is correct. It is the best thing that’s happened to Te Awamutu and the cherry blos-soms are the harbinger of spring and a welcome sight to cheer us up after a cold winter.

The median is also a safe refuge for us elderly people when saving the walk to pedestrian cross-ings for those with walking disabilities.

One thing I would like to see changed is the footpath camber which with my disability makes walking very uncomfortable and just about im-possible to walk a straight line.

Others have also remarked on this. Otherwise leave the CBD as it is.

RON BOXELL

Te Awamutu is the Wild West town of the Waikato (Deadwood)

Drinking in public places is common. Seats and tables are put on the footpath to encourage it. On the corner of Rewi Street and Alexandra (a traffi c island) was turned into a drinking area, so now you can actually drink on the road and yahoo at the traffi c.

So why do we complain about teenagers walking around drunk. We adults set a fi ne example.

I live in Rewi Street. About two weeks ago at 5.45pm the footpath was nearly blocked by people drinking. Families and children had to negotiate this. Alcohol should be only consumed inside hotels - not in public places or on our footpaths.

MP confi rmed as candidate for 2008

Local MP Shane Ard-ern, says he is delight-ed to be selected by the National Party to rep-resent the Taranaki-King Country elector-ate as a candidate in next year’s election.

“Being a constitu-ent MP ensures that I keep in touch with people and take their thoughts and wishes back to Parliament,” Mr Ardern says.

“It keeps my feet on the ground and I wouldn’t have it any other way. This is a di-verse electorate which encompasses rural towns, farming and life-style choices. It is the spirit and the willing-ness of so many to de-vote their time and en-ergy to our community which gives Taranaki-King Country a unique advantage.

“I have always been proud to be the Tarana-ki-King Country Mem-ber of Parliament. I also hope that after the 2008 election, I will not only be the MP for Taranaki-King Coun-try but also a member of a new National Par-ty Government.”

Jumping for joy

JUMP JAM fans Holly Kirkham and Aidan Keast celebrate the news they have been selected for the Jump Jam Idol fi nals in Christchurch. 312075AD

By Cathy Asplin‘Jump Jam’ was only introduced

to Pukeatua School this year - but the pupils have proved to be quick learners.

Teacher Nicola Bain says she had previously used the fi tness programme while teaching at Ngahinapouri School and felt it would also be a fun programme for Pukeatua pupils to try.

She was right - they loved it and the whole school was soon involved.

Several students were particu-larly enthusiastic about Jump Jam so they attended a leadership course at Te Awamutu Primary School.

This gave them a chance to work in groups and develop ways to lead Jump Jam sessions.

The students were also told about the chance to enter the national ‘Jump Jam Idol’ competition.

Miss Bain says to do this they had to provide a video of a routine - showing how they could perform accurately and encourage others to take part in the fi tness routine as well.

“Two students - Aidan Keast and Holly Kirkham - practised their

routines individually and lead the school in the regular Jump Jam fi t-ness sessions

“Recordings of their efforts were then sent to Tauranga for judging.”

To be selected for the fi nals Aidan (Year 8) and Holly (Year 7) needed to be in the top 10 nationwide.

“They were actually placed in the top fi ve in their age groups - so both are now heading to Christchurch for the fi nals later this month.”

The pair will be performing in front of around 200 primary school pupils and will have headset micro-phones so they can communicate with them.

Judges will be looking at the ac-curacy of their routines, the motiva-tion they provide for the audience and the cues they give during the routine.

Aidan has chosen ‘Kotahitangi’ and Holly has chosen ‘Nod Your Head’ - two favourite numbers at Pukeatua School.

To help with the cost of the trip to Christchurch, the school has been staging fundraising sausage sizzles.

Parents will accompany the Pukeatua pupils at their own cost.

By Cathy AsplinKihikihi artist Val

Hawkins has been working hard to pre-pare works for an exhi-bition which opens this weekend.

The joint exhibition with Whangerei artist Keith Wright is being staged in the Tirau Memorial Hall from November 10-13.

The opening is to-morrow night and Ms Hawkins is hoping there may be local peo-ple travelling through the area over the week-end who can call in.

She has a passion for painting coastal scenes and bright fl owers, so pohutukawa and pop-pies often appear in her work.

Much of her inspi-ration is drawn from the time she lived in Auckland and further north, but she has been happily residing in the Waikato since 2002.

She sold paintings at the recent Affordable Art Show in Wellington and also exhibited in last month’s Taranaki Art Review.

Around 25 of her works will feature in

the Tirau exhibition.Keith Wright became

interested in painting after he retired in the 1980s. He enjoys oil and acrylic work with his sea-going back-

ground refl ected in many of his paintings.

He has lived in Whangarei all of his life so the Whangarei Harbour has provided plenty of inspiration.

Mr Wright is cur-rently the president of ‘Crafts and Arts in Northland’.

Idol, Miss Rosetown offOrganisers of Rosetown Idol and Miss Rosetown

are disappointed to have to cancel their events, due to be held this weekend.

Rosetown Lions didn’t believe they had enough entries to make Rosetown Idol viable and Miss Rosetown organiser Dean Taylor was well short of confi rmed entries for the biennial event.

He thanks all sponsors who had indicated their support, especially clothing sponsors Womenz and CBR and main prize sponsor Gemtime Jew-ellers.

Undeterred, Mr Taylor and Rosetown Lions have plans to revive Bride of the Year in 2008.

Novice rosarian back for another crackRose Society gears up for 50th Show

TED SIRCOMBE was so rapt with his successful fi rst rose show last year that he will be back again to try his luck this year. He is pictured yesterday tending the roses in the front garden of the Idea Services communal home he shares. 3120707AD

Ted Sircombe might only be lining up for his second Te Awamutu Rose Show, but he’s hoping to make it to a lot more.

Last year he carried off the trophy for the best single miniature rose for a fi rst time exhibitor.

This year he’s got high hopes for his beautiful red Dublin Bay blooms and another miniature.

He reckons the quality of his

roses is higher this year, thanks to the spraying that support worker Ann Mackie encouraged him to do.

Mr Sircombe has an intellec-tual disability, but that doesn’t stop him enjoying a great life.

And according to Barbara Lin-ton he’s a fantastic neighbour.

“Ted’s got a big heart. He’ll come over and do things that need doing on my property

without me even asking him,” she told the Courier.

Schedules for the Golden Jubi-lee Rose Show are available from the i-Site Centre.

The show takes place at St Patrick’s Hall in Rewi Street from 1pm-6pm Friday and 9.30am-4pm Saturday.

For more information contact Barbara Dench (871 8388) or Shirley Lord (870 2299).

Not so wet October

Kihikihi weather watchers John and Margaret Nicholls were stunned that what they thought was a wet Oc-tober yielded less rain than previous years.

Of the 11 years they have records for, this October’s 82mm was less than all but 2001 (72mm) and 2002 (52mm).

Te Awamutu weather watcher Paul Hobbs recorded 115.5mm of rainfall last month - “about average”.

People passing the former Ohaupo Hotel will have noticed it’s been a hive of activity.

Sisters Abbey Henry-Metcalfe and Leah Armstrong recently took over the family- owned premises that is now home to the Windy Ridge Cafe and are breathing new life into the former ‘country pub’ that originally opened in 1937.

The latest stage of development will be marked tomorrow evening when they open an art gallery in the re-vamped cafe area.

The development refl ects their interest in art and their desire

to support the many talented artists in this area.

Abbey has a visual de-sign degree and felt the building would be ideal to show off art work.

“It has fantastic ceil-ing heights - perfect for hanging art. We have installed a system to allow us to showcase a variety of sizes and shapes. ”

The work currently being displayed covers a diverse range - from street art by Zane Pad-man (Te Awamutu) and landscapes by Margaret Dixon (Te Awamutu) to caricatures by Lance Prutton (Ohaupo) and a variety of products by designer Chris Metcalfe (Te Awamutu).

The art will be changed every two months so the owners welcome approaches from other people inter-ested in exhibiting their work.

The theme of ‘Pacifi c Rim’ covers the artwork as well as the food avail-able in the cafe.

“We intend to show-case all art and food from New Zealand mar-kets, while promoting what we have in own backyard.”

Local people are invit-ed to attend the opening tomorrow evening (from 6.30pm) which includes free nibbles served by new chef, Troy Colbert.

It is also a chance for people to see the hard work that has gone in to the hotel face lift.

“We have also up-dated the old public bar

- which was renown for bikes sitting out the back in the garden bar!

“The space has had a total face lift and is now used as a function room for weddings, confer-ences and parties.

“It’s Ohaupo’s best kept secret with lush

trees, wonderful sun-light and a water fea-ture.

“The fi nal touches have also been added to the front of the building this week - the new deck now has an outdoor fi re to create a special ambi-ence.”

Windy Ridge Cafe on Ohaupo’s main street is open from 10.30am weekdays and 9am on weekends.

Takeaways are avail-able Wednesday to Sunday night, evening meals Wednesday to Saturday night.

Goodbye to Gingkos

Even ardent tree lov-ers would probably not have been too upset to see the female Gingko trees removed from Alexandra Street last week.

The fallen fruit from these trees has plagued pedestrians for years - smelling sadly similar to vomit when trodden on.

Treescape Services had the contract for the removal and traf-fi c was diverted away from the southern side of Alexandra Street as the trees were removed on Thursday.

“We offer counselling for children, families, adults and couples.

“Our charges are very affordable and we have subsidy money available for those who need it.”

Kainga Aroha provides heaps of fun every school holidays.

Trips and camps cater for young people aged 7 to 14.

These are varied and include options such as kayaking, visits to Auckland Zoo, snow trips, bush walks, beach days, craft days and lots more.

Camps are usually for four days at various locations.

All of the leaders who accompa-ny each trip are vetted and have ongoing training.

“But we’re always in need of more leaders – especially males!”

Subsidy money is available to help with costs and families are simply invited to pay what they can afford towards the trip

A 2001 CYF review of Kainga Aroha’s systems said, ”the agency is to be admired for the level of commitment they show towards ensuring children attend-ing programmes are safe and well cared for.”

Look out for details of camps and trips in future editions of the Te Awamutu Courier.

KAINGA AROHA offers subsidised, fun outings for children aged 7-14 during its holiday programmes.

Kainga Aroha has a new home on Bank Street (pictured above).

The community house was initially opened at Kihikihi on April 1, 1987 - but the valuable work carried out by the dedicated team at Kainga Aroha is no joke!

Although it began as a ‘drop in centre’, over the years the house has become a valuable resource for budgeting advice, family sup-port and counselling.

It has also become well known for its popu-lar holiday programmes.

Young Edwards minisprinter to beatThe John Watkin Memorial Trophy for

minisprints will feature on opening day at McDonald’s Kihikihi Speedway on Sunday.

Kihikihi Speedway Club expects a good fi eld of competitors for the event, with entries from Auckland, Huntly, Rotorua and possibly Palmerston North joining the local cars.

Hot favourite would have to be local driver, 17-year-old Brian Edwards - the current trophy holder.

Edwards won this three race series last season in his second outing in a minis-print.

The odds of a repeat win are enhanced by his father, Mark, and older brother, An-drew, leaving the minisprint ranks to drive a V8 sprintcar at Baypark Speedway.

The Edwards family were the ones to beat in minspirints last season, when Brian had more than his share of success.

Second placings in regional champion-ships in Auckland, Manawatu and Ro-torua were gilded with second placing in the North Island and New Zealand Grand Prix titles, plus a strong third in the New Zealand minisprint championship in Ro-torua.

“He was immediately on the pace in the

very competitive minisprints, due to his two seasons racing in the youth ministock section,” says club spokesperson, Terry Campbell.

“This class teaches young drivers race-craft skills and the ability to run wheel to wheel with other competitors to suc-cessfully graduate out of this training division.”

There are other minisprint drivers who will show out this season.

Chip Humble and Jacqui Greer were on the pace at practise, while Jarvis Tidd, who performed wonders last season in an old car with an under-powered engine, will benefi t from a new motor and chassis.

Huntly driver Daniel Thomas, in an ex-Edwards car, will be fast, while Auck-lander Steve Welsh, a driver with experi-ence in midgets and sprintcars, will be one to watch.

It is not known if current New Zealand titleholder Chris Street or the always quick Shaun Cooke will have their cars ready for the event.

Other sections racing on Sunday are sidecars, stockcars, superstocks, saloons, production saloons, streetstocks and min-istocks. The gates open at 11am and racing starts at 1pm. TE AWAMUTU teenager Brian Edwards defending his minisprint title on Sunday. Photo supplied

Gutsy Drower K2 ride Te Awamutu Sports Cycling

Club’s Eric Drower continued his outstanding form placing sixth in Coromandel’s prestigious K2 elite men’s cycle classic.

Drower covered the 200km lap of the Coromandel Peninsula race in 5.20.16.

Former world junior cycling champion Jeremy Yates won the race in a record time of 5.14.19.

The K2 is rated by far the hardest ride in New Zealand, in terms of its distance and number of hills.

It is also the most spectacular, taking the riders on twisting wind-ing roads through bush and back out onto some of the best beaches you could hope to fi nd anywhere.

The K2 elite race attracted 53 entrants, with 49 fi nishing.

Te Awamutu was well represented in the race.Ryan Wills placed 20th overall and 14th in the

U23 age group, clocking 5.35.40.Scott Arden was 28th overall and 21st (age

group) in 5.4410.Tim Gudsell, still very much on the comeback

trail after a serious leg injury, suffered from cramp. He fi nished 34th overall and 26th elite

senior in 5.44.18.Two former Te Awamutu riders,

Mark Langlands and Brad Carter, showed their class placing second and third respectively in the elite U23 section. They were 10th and 11th overall, both with 5.22.07.

Last month’s Te Awamutu Open winner Mike Northey (Auckland) placed 21st, while 2005 and 2006 Te Awamutu Open winner Justine Kerr (Hamilton) placed 14th.

The (standard) K2 race, over the same course as the elite men’s, at-tracted 534 starters of which 500 fi nished.

Aucklander Darrin Strahan won in a time of 5.35.05.

First Te Awamutu rider home was Chris Gaze in 5.45.29. He placed 20th overall and 10th in his Mas-

ters 1 age group.Matthew Gorter was 61st overall and 18th

male-senior in 5.52.58; Alysha Blackwell 192nd, 11th female, 4th female-senior, 6.25.11; Aaron Dixon 211th, 4th male-U23, 6.26.38; John Wil-liamson 345th, 63rd male-Vet 1, 6.59.48; Charlie Pollock 489th, 11th mixed tandem, 8.31.58.

Seven Te Awamutu rid-ers were among a fi eld of 443 starters in the Pearl Izumi K1 100km road cycle race in the Coromandel.

It was a challenging course this year, with fi ve of the seven K2 category hills included in the race.

Most signifi cantly, it included the notorious Whangapoua Hill which reaches a height of 380 metres in only 3km. There is a steep downhill where riders reach speeds up to 80kph, with a wicked (15kph) hairpin at the bottom known as Devil’s Elbow.

The race gave riders a taste of both coastlines, with stage one following the beauti-ful Pacifi c Coastline from Whitianga to Coromandel and stage two following the stun-ning Puhutakawa Coastline to

Thames.The race started at the

civilised time of 12 noon in Whitianga, travelled through Coromandel and fi nished in Thames.

Karl Murray won the K1 for the fourth consecutive year in a time of 2.47.35.

Over 50 riders failed to fi nish the brutally hilly course.

Te Awamutu riders to fi n-ish were Colin Thorsen 149th overall, fi fth in 55-60 age group, 3.31.19; John Blake 188th, 7th 55-60 age group, 3.37.29; Stuart Gudsell 235th, 13th 55-60 age group, 3.45.20; Gavin Foster 265th, 32nd male-masters I, 3.52.22; Heather Kumm 310th, 56th female, 9th female-master; Ralph Kumm 336th, 36th male-veteran I, 4.13.05; Diane Tonks 369th, 84th female, 8th female-

veteran II.Due to the K1, covering

the second half of the feature 200km lap, becoming increas-ingly popular in the last three years, organisers have added a ‘Quarter K’ option where riders test themselves over the fi nal stage of the course.

This year’s event started at sea level in the township of Coromandel and fi nished in Thames, a distance of 53km.

All three Te Awamutu Quar-ter K entrants performed out-standingly.

Scott Creighton (13) was third overall in a fi eld of 91 with a time of 1.46.40. He was fi rst male-junior home. Sam Gaze (11) was 12th overall, 2nd male-junior, in 2.08.26, and Julia Lile 14th overall, 2nd female, 1st female-master, in 2.11.47.

Rain failed to dampen the enthusiasm of those contesting the fi nal three championships of the year at Pirongia Gun Club.

Murray Barclay won the 30 target triples cham-pionship outright with 49/50.

He was two points clear of his nearest rivals, Richard Smith, Steve Vincent and Peter Krippner, in the A grade.

Geoff Pulham took out the B grade with 43 points, from Dain Vincent on 40 and Michael Vincent 39.

Jackson Corbett secured the 25 target Sparrow Championship outright with 24, from Peter Kripp-ner on 23 and Grant Wallace and Steve Vincent 22.

Craig Vincent made no race of the 15 pair double rise championship with 27/30. He was four clear of the joint runners-up Krippner and Steve Vincent.

Dain Vincent, son of Craig, was the best of the B grade with 18/30, followed by Pulham on 17 and Zeb Corbett and Michael Vincent on 16.

Steve Vincent took out the champion of champi-ons for the year, one point clear of Wallace.

A feature of this year’s championships was the evenness of the competition and the emergence of several promising young shooters.

Other results, possibles:15 single rise eyeopener: R Smith, G Wallace, M Vincent.

10 sparrow sweep: R Smith, G Wallace, S Vincent. High gun for day: P Krippner.

A group of six Te Awamutu College athletes fi nished 13th overall out of over 200 teams in the Lake Rotorua Marathon Relay.

The College mixed team of boys and girls raced in the boys’ grade, fi nishing seventh.

Of the 12 teams that fi nished ahead of them overall, seven were secondary school teams.

Te Awamutu College had a great battle with the fi rst of the girls’ teams, Tauranga Girls High, before the latter prevailed.

Coach Murray Green says the relay was a great opportunity for athletes in an individual sport to compete as a team.

A support vehicle follows the course dropping off and picking up runners at each changeover.

“It was pretty hectic through the fi rst two changes but after that we had got far enough ahead that there wasn’t so much congestion.”

The course follows the marathon course.First off was Trent Nicholson running 9km, fol-

lowed by Sam Fuchs 7km, Laura Sinclair a hilly 7.9km, Connor Smyth 8.1km, Erana Severne 4.7km and Andre Peake 5.7km.

Their time was 3hrs 6mins, with the winners fi nishing in 2hrs 41mins. Some teams took al-most seven hours.

Sinclair recorded the fastest average speed of 4.02 mins per km, despite having the most dif-fi cult leg.

Peake turned in a gutsy effort after joining the team when injury ruled out Cameron Furer. She had just had six weeks off running after a motor accident left her with 50 stitches in her knee.

The next challenge for these athletes is the Round the Bridges run in Hamilton before head-ing to Wanganui for the NZ Secondary School Championships in December.

Coach Green says it was great having two of the College head students, Nicholson and Sev-erne, involved with the younger athletes.

Hannah rides luck

FROM TE KAHA TO KIHIKIHI: Loaf of Luck proves a dab hand at show hunting at Kihikihi on Sunday for Hannah Bodle. 3120718AD

By Colin ThorsenMorrinsville’s Hannah Bodle belied

her tender years impressing with precision jumping at the North Is-land Showhunter Championships at Kihikihi.

The 10-year-old won the high points national series run throughout New Zealand and placed second in the North Island classic, category A class, on her mount Murfre Hosanna.

Hannah also placed third in the high points class, category C open 90cm, riding Loaf of Luck.

It is a wonderful ‘rags to riches’ story.

Loaf of Luck is a former pig hunt-ing pony, who was still carrying pork-ers out of the bush at Te Kaha, near Gisborne, earlier this year.

The Bodle family only took him over in February after noting he had jumping potential.

Hannah has been riding for eight years, nearly from the time she took her fi rst steps walking.

She is following in her mother Jo’s footsteps. Jo is a former well-per-formed showjumper now following her children.

She has another daughter, Georgia (7), and son, Harry (8), both keen showjumping and showing competi-tors.

The North Island Showhunter Classic was won by Nadine McFad-vien on J. J. Certainty Sir.

Paxton Condor took out the Pony category A North Island champion-ship on Evermore Skholor.

The category B North Island cham-pionship went to Kate Allen on Llan-dovery King Cole.

Matthew Dickey rode his way to the category C North Island title on Wilful.

Waipa races perfect setting for ‘stag do’

‘JOLLY GOOD FELLOWS’: Mike Borrie, groom-to-be (Silver Fern shirt), surrounded by his mates at Waipa races and Mountain Man, Keith Prendergrast (far left).

By Colin ThorsenA hard-case group of old

school and rugby mates from Te Aroha kicked up their heels in true ‘stag do’ tradition at Waipa Supporters race meeting on Saturday.

The 13-strong party from un-der the mountain at Te Aroha kept fellow patrons entertained in the giant supporters marque, singing and dancing to music provided by legendary Pirongia Mountain Man, Keith Pender-

grast. They were all dressed up in

an array of costumes from the 1980s depicting the old silk col-ours of Keith Opie (ex Te Aroha trainer, now based at Paeroa).

Centre of attention was groom-to-be Mike ‘Snaky’ Bor-rie, dressed up as a jockey with his own wooden horse, who is to marry Cindy Baker on New Year’s Eve in Hamilton.

They got engaged at Te Aroha Racing Club’s Breeders Stakes meeting two year’s ago.

As for coming to Te Awamutu, Borrie said it was the only weekend the lads could all get together and it just so happened the Waipa races were on.

“We’ve all had an interest in racing in some form or another, some as owners of horses and greyhounds.”

They had their share of luck punting, collectively collecting $920 off the second placed Final Frontier, paying $8 (place) in the Ron Dickey Handicap.

Te Aroha lads meet Pirongia’s legendary Mountain Man

Kings of their own turf

For the second meeting running Te Awamutu stables dominated on home turf, winning fi ve of the 10 races at Waipa on Saturday.

The new training partnership of K. W., B. W. Hawtin and S. R. Autridge set the ball rolling, saddling up Sandace (J. McDonald) to win race two - the Gumboot Syndicate 1150.

Club secretary Lea Temm has an owner-ship interest in the consistent Sandace.

Graeme and Mark Sanders produced two winners, Ringburner (Mark Sweeney) in race four - the Alexandra Racing Club 1400 - and ultra impressive debutant Berio (Shaun Collins) in race seven - the 2007 Supporters Classic 1400.

The Robert Priscott trained Silence Please (Michelle Wenn) scored an upset win heading off favourite Dalliance in race fi ve - the Mills Reef Winery & Restau-rant 2000.

Silence Please would have delighted the suc-cessful punters, paying $29.20 for the win and $7 place.

Paul Burrows com-pleted a highly satis-factory day for local trainers when his stable star Casali (J. McDonald) took out the Aztech Farm Buildings 2000.

Swimming Club milestone

Te Awamutu Swimming Club celebrates its 50th anniversary of incorporation this year.

The Club was formed in 1941. A 50 year celebration was held in 1991 but this year makes 50 years as a ‘legal’ entity.

“The incorporation of the Club as a Society occurred in June 1957. So we decided to have another birthday - as you do when you get old,” quipped club spokesperson, Alison Tuck.

Swimming as a competitive sport has been happening in the district since 1913.

The modern facilities at Liv-ingstone Aquatics at the Trust Waikato Te Awamutu Events Centre are a far cry from the swimming hole at the junction of the Mangahoe and Man-gapiko Streams, where competi-tions were fi rst held in January, 1914.

Despite a two year recess from 1920-22 and the outbreak

of the Second World War, when no championships were held between 1938-1940, swimming has been a popular pastime in the district ever since.

The Waipa District Swimming Club moved to the Municipal Pool in December, 1925.

In 1941 a meeting was held and it was moved that a club be formed - to be known as the Te Awamutu Swimming Club.

The club was incorporated as the Te Awamutu Swimming Club Incorporated in June, 1957.

The rest as the saying goes is history.

The most momentous event in the Club’s history has been the move to the present site in the Events Centre.

The complex provides a pool that meets Swim New Zealand standards for national short course meets.

Competitive swimming is still

going strong, as recent success-es at national level attest.

There is unprecedented in-terest in children being taught to swim for fi tness and water safety reasons.

The demand in Te Awamutu and surrounding areas is such that the Club is looking at ways to work with the management of the Events Centre complex to provide more classes so that local residents do not have to travel out of the District for these potentially life-saving lessons.

Te Awamutu has a complex and focus on swimming of which it can be justifi ably proud.

The Club is to celebrate its milestone with a dinner for all past and present members at Te Awamutu Bowling Club on November 16..

Jubilee dinner tickets are available from Murray Hislop Surveyors, 405 Mahoe Street.

Opener Stretton posts whirlwind maiden ton

By Colin ThorsenTe Awamutu Sports Green

opening batsman Sam Stret-ton blazed his way to 101 off 65 balls in Waikato Valley cricket.

The club’s top run scorer in 2006 struck 12 fours and two sixes - the last of which brought up his maiden century.

His previous highest score was 88 against Whitianga last season.

Stretton featured in an open-ing stand of 144 with Peter West (40) as the ‘Green Machine’ made light of reaching 168/2 in reply to Thames A’s 165 all out at Albert Park on Saturday.

Mark Hall top scored with 63 for Thames A.

Bowling honours for the Green team were shared by Hamish Forsman, with 3-26,

Peter West 2-14 and Calvin Blyde 2-34.

FAMILY AFFAIRIn division two, Te Awamutu

Sports Gold team went on a scoring spree posting 347/9 in 44 overs.

Graeme Stewart led the way with mammoth 175, including 16 fours and two sixes.

His cousin Webber Stewart scored a well-compiled 50, laced with three fours and three sixes.

A demoralised Huntly B outfi t could only muster 77 in reply.

Graeme Stewart completed the rout with 6-13 off nine overs, including four maidens.

His 11-year-old son Danyon, making his club debut, claimed 2-3 off three overs. TON for Sam Stretton. 3120720AD

Whats On?

Win double pass to hit musicalWe Will Rock You

Te Awamutu Courier and CDs4nix (formerly Tracs) give readers the chance to win a double pass to see the hit stage musical ‘We Will Rock You’ at Auckland’s Civic Theatre.

The legendary literary skills of Ben Elton and the musical magic of Queen combine to produce a rock theatre masterpiece.

It is set in the future where golbalisation is complete and everyone

i n c l u d i n g the kids live in a safe ‘Pleasantville’ kind of world and is forced to listen to synthesised ‘pop’ music because live music is banned.

Bring on the rebellion. The search is on to prove the truth

of the legend that instruments still exist and that he who can draw the mighty axe of the great and hairy guitar god from the stione in which it is embedded might just be the one to lead the rebels to them.

‘We Will Rock You’ features 24 of Queen’s legendary hits including ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘We Are The Champions’, ‘Radio Ga Ga’, ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ and ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’.

The show stars New Zealand’s own Annie Crummer as the Killer Queen and the heart throb Rockstar INXS fi nalist MiG Ayesa in the starring role of Galileo.

As well there is a great cast and a grunty live band.

Add an exhilaratingly energetic lighting design and an incredible set with big screen ef-fects, cars, motorbikes and you have a show that is selling as fast as the printers can pout out the tickets.

This is a new breed of musical and is indeed ‘guaranteed to blow your mind.

Be in quick - why would you want to be anywhere else.

Tickets are available from Ticketek.

To be in to win simply put your name, address and daytime contact number on the back of a standard sized envelope, address it to the ‘We Will Rock You Competition’ and make sure it reaches our offi ce by 5pm next Tuesday.
