BRIEFLYFarewell for Primary pair

A community function is being held to farewell two long term staff members of Te Awamutu Primary School.

Ian McLauchlan, principal for the past 13 years and Graham Milne, deputy principal for the past 20 years, are both retiring at the end of this year.

The Board of Trustees is planning a farewell function at the school hall on Monday, December 18 from 3.15pm. An invitation is extended to past pupils, teachers and col-leagues, parents and commu-nity members to attend.

Ocean comes to Ohaupo

The seaside has been brought to Ohaupo in the Ocean Folly exhibition.

Acrylic and mixed media works will be on show at Vil-lagethree Gallery Ohaupo till January 10.

Miranda J Caird’s vibrant familiar scenes of New Zealand coastline are the main feature of this exhibition.

Hone Paekau and Debbie Fuller display works created in the IDEA Sandz Gallery studio.

A landscape of Port Douglas by Bruce Smith is on display, Fiona Davies’ fi sh make a state-ment and Stephanie Swetman has paua and pumice inspired blocks on show.

Standing tall with awesome attitude Tony Christiansen inspiring speaker with incredible will to succeed and to enjoy life’s challenges

of hearing dynamic achiever Tony Chris-tiansen speak on Friday.

Mr Christiansen, a double amputee, has done more things in his life to date than the average army platoon.

He lost both his legs when he was run over by a train at the age of nine.

Since then the Tauranga man has be-come a second degree tae know do black-belt, effected 33 surf lifesaving rescues, written best selling books, gained his com-mercial pilot’s licence, built multi million dollar businesses, climbed mountains and won medals at the World Games - 12 gold, 17 silver and six bronze.

He could also lay a strong claim to be-ing one of the most inspiring speakers anywhere.

Pirongia School children, and teachers, were certainly enthralled on Friday.

Mr Christiansen told them about how he climbed Mt Kilimanjaro (5985m) - “about 20 times the height of the Mount (Maun-ganui) - on my bum.”

His next goal is to travel to Antarctica and scuba dive under the ice.

Mr Chistiansen said life was about tak-ing the package that you have and facing up to challenges in areas you are passion-ate about.

“I’m not special, I am the same as every-one else, I just don’t have any legs.”

He told the children not to let people tell them what they couldn’t achieve.

“When we are born we don’t know ‘can’t’, ‘shouldn’t’, ‘wouldn’t’, ‘get real’ and ‘don’t waste your time’ - we are taught those things by other people.

“It’s up to us to decide whether we be-lieve them or not.”

Mr Christiansen said he had no time to feel sorry for himself - there were too many things he still wanted to achieve.

“Before I lost my legs there were going to be 10,000 things I could do - without my legs I can still achieve 8,000 of them. Rath-er than worrying about the 2,000 things I can’t do, I’m concentrating on the 500 things I will do that make my life great.”

After achieving 17% in School Certifi cate English, Mr Christiansen says he still has to pinch himself when he thinks that he has written two books - ‘Race You to the Top’ and ‘Attitude Plus’ that have been best sellers in New Zealand and Australia.

He presented his just released third

book, “Don’t Just Sit There’ (written for teenagers) to Pirongia School for its li-brary, to go with his other books which inspired the invitation to him to speak to the pupils.

Mr Christiansen, who is married with three children, told the pupils that among them may be a future Prime Minister, a person who would discover a cure for the common cold or a future best mum and dad in the world.

“You’ve all got what it takes, you’ve just

got to want it enough.”He owns three race cars (having won ti-

tles in this fi eld too) - another of his goals is to travel to Bonnyville, USA in 2008 with his drag car and travel at over 200 miles an hour.

“In my travels on airplanes I’ve seen ‘The World’s Fastest Indian’ 12 times - I thought ‘that’s something I’ve got to do’.”

says the haka performed indoors before the test against Wales will go down as one of the most memorable he has seen.

“It was probably the most emotional haka I have ever experienced - make no mistake, it was for real - they did it for us and for New Zealand.

“We knew there would be some fl ak over it and we felt sorry for the fans, but we decided the demand for it to be performed before the Welsh national anthem was just the thin edge of the wedge.

“We agreed to it last year as a ‘one-off ’ for a special occasion, but other than that we’re not performing it before anthems.

“We have no problem with what hap-pens after the anthems, if they want to reply to the haka or sing another song like they do in Australia, that’s fi ne.”

Sir Brian says the ‘best;’ thing to hap-pen to the All Blacks this year was the loss against South Africa in Rustenburg.

“They had been getting away with some poor fi nishing - but it’s hard to tell them that when they’re still winning.

“After Rustenburg we talked long and hard about that poor fi nishing. Come the World Cup next year we don’t want to be falling off the pace at the end of the tour-nament.

“I believe we can still improve another 20% - but other teams are improving too.

“We are ahead of them at the moment, but we need to keep that advantage as you never know when we’re going to have a bad day - we need to have a narrow band between our best and our worst per-formances. Next year will certainly be a fantastic challenge.”

Sir Brian congratulated the Corner-stone Trust for staging the fundraising luncheons and supporting rising sporting stars such as Graham Oberlin-Brown and Carla Hohepa.

YOUNG ACHIEVERS Graham Oberlin-Brown (18) spoke

about his background in rowing and the assistance he received from the Corner-

stone Trust which helped him compete in the U23 World Rowing Championships in Belgium earlier this year.

He showed the fi nal stages of his dou-bles race, which saw him and partner Peter Taylor win in a world best time.

The latest recipient to get assistance from the Cornerstone Trust is multi-tal-ented sportsperson Carla Hohepa (21).

Carla was Te Awamutu College Sport-sperson of the Year 2003 and has been se-lected for the New Zealand women’s touch team to play at the World Cup in South Africa early next year.

She has been attending Otago Uni-versity, where she played netball for the Otago U21 side and rugby for the Otago Women’s NPC team,

Carla has completed a sports degree and is now undertaking a Bachelor of Education.

The Cornerstone Trust grant has cov-ered Carla’s required personal contribu-tion for the South African trip.

SPORTING AUCTION Around 160 people attended the Cor-

nerstone Trust luncheon and helped push the auction total up past $5000.

Top price was paid for a Richie McCaw signed All Black jersey ($2600) while an All Black training jersey went for $550 and a row with Graham Oberlin-Brown went for $400.

Cornerstone Trust funds were signifi -cantly boosted for future grants.

In reference to the article that appeared in last Thursday’s Courier titled ‘Nearly cooked their goose’ - as an animal lover this story left me cold.

While the young man concerned had the keen eyes to keep his partner in crime clear of the fallen power lines, did it not dawn on this same young man that chasing birds is not only dangerous, but cruel?

How can a game like this be held up as gen-eral interest type of article?

Are the power company going to bill the boys for the damage they caused?

I dare say that had they not been chasing the geese, it may not have happened in the fi rst place.

To be pictured holding up a bird that lost its life in such circumstances to me is just ter-rible.

Obviously the scars you bear from the ones that got away have not taught you yet that fi ghting for one’s life makes any person or ani-mal a force to be reckoned with?

Losing your life is not a game - especially to the birds or animals you ‘play’ with.

Ron Mackie from Classic Hits ‘That’s the Story’ was spe-cial guest at the Altrusa Book Awards this year.

The Awards celebrate the achievements of children with improving their literacy skills.

Mr Mackie spoke to the award recipients and their families about producing a children’s ra-dio programme.

He also encouraged all of the children to continue their efforts with reading and writing.

In his words “while we can’t all be Margaret Mahy the important thing is to pick up your pencil and give it a go!”

In all 30 children from 13 lo-cal schools received awards for improvement in literacy.

Nominated by their schools, the children chose their own book prize which was presented at the awards ceremony.

At the end of the awards a spe-

cial ‘kids’ supper was enjoyed.This is the twelfth year that

Altrusa has organised these awards.

Improvement of Literacy is one of the main focuses of Al-trusa clubs world wide and the Book Awards form part of the Te Awamutu Club’s R.E.A.D (Re-sources, Enthusiasm, Acheive-ment, Developing partnerships) project.

Spokesperson Leanne Milligan says the large number of awards given to children this year was a record.

“It is a highlight of the club’s year to see the smiles on the faces of the children as they re-ceive acknowledgement for their efforts in front of their family and friends”.

Funding for this project was provided by the club’s recent ‘sell-out’ Home and Garden Ramble.

Schools environmental efforts earn awards

Waipa District Coun-cil has congratulated Goodwood, Puahue and Pokuru Schools and Te Awamutu College for their success in the recent round of Enviro-schools Awards.

Goodwood School and Te Awamutu College are receiving a bronze award, and Puahue and Pokuru receive silver awards.

Waipa Mayor Alan Livingston says these awards refl ect well on the schools and the district as a whole.

“Waipa District Council is a strong be-liever in the role of the natural environment to provide a rich and balanced living for all residents,” Mr Living-ston says.

“A healthy environ-ment is essential to support work and play and one key way to pro-tect that rich resource is to ensure we value it through education and involvement.

“The Enviroschools programme provides both education and in-volvement, and ignites a passion in our kids for preserving our en-vironment.”

Council became involved in the Envi-roschools Programme fi ve years ago. En-vironmental safety manager, Jennie Mac-farlane has overseen the programme for the District Council.

During that time, school involvement has increased to 10 from an initial two, with number 11 joining in January 2007.

Enviroschools began

to give awards three years ago (bronze, silver and green-gold) to schools meeting the standards set by the programme.

The awards pro-gramme is both an op-portunity to review and provide feedback to the schools participating, and the level of award represents the stand-ard reached to date.

In the fi rst year of the awards, two Waipa schools received awards, and last year there were four.

These awards are

both a measure of the schools’ success in building the Enviro-schools programme into their curriculum, and a measure of the success of the venture from a district point of view.

Mayor Livingston will present the schools with their awards, along with a small gift, during a school prize giving ceremony or school assembly.

Other schools are working on awards applications for next year.

E n v i r o n m e n t Waikato and Waipa District Council both fund an Enviroschools facilitator to assist the schools in achieving their goals.

E n v i r o n m e n t Waikato’s Schools Programme co-ordina-tor, Dean King says: “Waipa is continuing to add new schools to the programme. There is a strong interest in the Waipa District to value and take actions to enhance the environ-ment.

“The Enviroschools programme helps schools to do this by integrating environ-mental education into school life,” Mr King says.

“The existing Enviro-schools are being sus-tained while also being encouraged to further develop the range and depth of learning and action.

“These schools are providing a learning environment where students identify is-sues, explore alter-natives, take action and refl ect on these changes.

“That’s something we can all be proud of,” Mr King says.

Crafty move for OparauOparau Roadhouse Craft Gallery opens soon

Craftspeople in the area are in-vited to submit their craft for a new gallery opening alongside Oparau Roadhouse.

The standalone craft shop will be operating out of one of two houses on the property.

Jeanne Hudson, who is operating the new shop, says craft being fea-tured includes paintings, woodwork, herbs, jewellery, toys, weaving, greeting cards, leadlighting, stone craft, paper craft and garden orna-ments.

The Roadhouse Craft Gallery will be offi cially opened at 2pm this Sat-urday and everyone is welcome to attend.

Little Heaven opened on Arawata Street (next to Harvey World Travel) last week.

It is the ‘little sister’ shop of Heaven in Te Kuiti and stocks a range of bedroom, lounge and occasional furniture.

There are also mir-rors, wall hangings, screens, lamps and some gift items.

Shop manager Mo-nique Horn says the Mona Lisa screen has attracted plenty of interest, as people can see her serene smile as they drive around the roundabout.

“This particular screen has sold, but we are getting more, including a Marilyn Monroe one and an Elvis version.”

Much of the furniture is solid wood with a range of tables, book-cases, cabinets, CD holders etc.

Lamps include lead-light versions, while the framed clocks would ap-peal to fi shing fans in particular.

Gifts range from can-dles and candlestick holders to pillows, trin-

ket boxes and baskets of goodies.

Stock is rotated be-tween the two stores, so if customers are looking for a particular piece of furniture or something they have seen in the Te Kuiti store, items can be brought up to Te

Awamutu. Layby is available for

all goods, with fi nance available for furniture.

Little Heaven is in the premises formerly used by the souvenir shop and taxi service.

The taxi service has remained, but some

people have been con-fused as new signage has not yet gone up.

The taxi service can be accessed by phone (871 4178), while Lit-tle Heaven is currently open 9am-5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am-3pm on Sundays.

Scant signs of summer yet says weather watcher

A late fl urry of rain in November saw Te Awam-utu’s rainfall total for the month hit 120.5mm, reports Paul Hobbs.

“Summer should be just around the corner but there aren’t many signs yet,” said Te Awamutu’s weather watcher. About one in every three days saw rain, the same as in October.

An 11-month total of 1240mm means total rain-fall for the year is likely to be in the upper end of Mr Hobbs’ recordings for the past 16 years.

International Volunteers Day last week was a great day to acknowledge the thousands of New Zealanders who help support our arts and culture said As-sociate Arts Culture and Heritage Minister, Judith Tizard.

“Every day and night, right across the country, our local drama and operatic clubs, historical societies and historic places committees are driven by these people who volunteer their time.”

A Creative New Zealand Survey released earlier this year found that 33% of New Zealanders described themselves as crew/ helpers or volunteers for the performing arts alone.

“These volunteers help to make things happen - they are helping to build both our sense of community and our national identity.”

Crowning glory for rising cycling star

cling star Shem Rodger has tak-en out the Waikato secondary school supreme and male sports champion double for 2006.

The just turned 18-year-old is the third athlete in four years, with Te Awamutu connections, to have claimed the double.

He follows in the footsteps of Silver Fern Laura Langman (2003) and cycling club-mate Rushlee Buchanan (2005), who took out the supreme and sportswoman of the year dou-ble.

Rodger was a member of the New Zealand men’s team which claimed silver in the team pur-suit at the Junior World Cycling

Championships in Ghent, Bel-gium in August.

He also competed in the time trial at the worlds.

Other highlights in a memo-rable year include winning the under-19 points race at the track nationals in Wanganui in February and the three-day Kiwivelo Te Awamutu Junior Tour in April.

Rodger enhanced his grow-ing reputation by upstaging 2005 world junior team pur-suit champions Wesley Gough (Hawkes Bay) and Jessie Ser-gent (Palmerston North) in the Te Awamutu Junior Tour.

He has been rewarded with selection to represent New Zea-land (at senior level) at a world cup track meet in Los Angeles.

The NZ track team will fi rstly compete in the Bay Series Crite-rium in Melbourne from Janu-ary 3-10, then fl y direct to Los Angeles.

OPPORTUNITIESRodger is in his last year as

a junior cyclist in under-19 ranks.

But his Te Awamutu Sports club coach Graham Bunn is confi dent his charge has what it takes to go on and emulate the likes of local stars Brendon Cameron, Tim Gudsell and Pe-ter Latham.

“There are some good oppor-tunities for him still in under-23 ranks next year.”

Shem is the son of former in-ternational rower Mike Rodger.

Former Te Awamutu women’s senior A soccer team member Helen Collins was named sports-woman of the year at the Waikato secondary school awards.

Highlight of her stellar year was undoubtedly playing for New Zealand at the women’s under-20 world cup in Russia.

It was a ‘chance of a lifetime’ to play against the likes of the bril-liant Brazilians.

The road to Russia for the NZU20 team started at the quali-fying tournament in Samoa, fol-lowed by a pre-World Cup tour to Argentina.

Collins also played for the national secondary school team in Australia and New Zealand under-18 in the national women’s league.

She was equal leading goal scorer, with Brogan Mathieson (Te Awamutu) for the crack St Peter’s School (Cambridge) girls’ 1st XI, coached by Te Awamutu’s Andrew Ryan.

St Peter’s fi nished third at the national secondary school girls’ tournament in Napier.

As a 16-year-old last year, Col-lins became the youngest ever player to win the Golden Boot in the women’s Northern League. She headed the individual scoring with 21 goals in 14 games for the third placed Claudelands Rovers.

The previous youngest player to have taken out the award was aged 18.

Gaining a soccer and study scholarship to America in 2007 crowns a stunning year for Col-lins.

The recognition of Rodger and Collins’ wonderful feats in 2006 follows hot-on-the-heels of Te Awamutu Sports Triathlon Club member Sian Walker being named New Zealand’s top wom-en’s secondary school multisport (triathlon and duathlon) athlete for 2006.

Coach Jo O’Brien was thrilled being poolside as her Te Awamutu team scooped nine medals at the annual Taupo Masters Swimming Club Spring Fling meet.

It was the newly appointed coach’s fi rst meet.

The medal haul included gold for the 4 x 25 metre relay team of Els Brown, Mary Brewer, Pam Scott and Heather Leong.

Other medallists in their respective age groups were Graeme Parkes and Annette Whittle (gold), Warren Main, Dianne Walton, Mary Berwer and Elizabeth Captein (silver), and Heather Leong and Ronnie

Stevenson (bronze).A total of 20 personal bests

were recorded, including Ron-nie Stevenson achieving the outstanding result of fi ve out of fi ve personal bests for the day.

Recognition for cyclists

Minister for Sport and Rec-reation Trevor Mallard recently honoured New Zealand’s top cyclists at a luncheon at Parlia-ment, including Te Awamutu Sports Club members Tim Gudsell, Peter Latham, Rushlee Buchanan and Shem Rodger.

Over the past two years New Zealand cyclists have achieved 30 podium fi nishes in World Cup or Commonwealth Games events.

Most of these achievements have taken place in Europe away

from the New Zealand public eye.

The function in Wellington provided an opportunity to bring these athletes together and congratulate them on their successes.

Latham and Gudsell won bronze in the team pursuit at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Buchanan silver in the points race at the 2005 junior world championships in Austria, and Rodger silver in team pur-suit at this year’s junior world

championships in Belgium. “It’s promising to see so many

junior athletes achieving podium fi nishes in world events. There is some exciting young cycling talent in New Zealand,” Trevor Mallard said.

“Sport and Recreation New Zealand’s (SPARC) investment in BikeNZ has assisted in the success of these young athletes.

“Funding for BikeNZ has given a greater number of athletes access to international competi-tions.”

Walker, Fordham retain badminton singles titles

By Colin ThorsenThe battle for men’s singles supremacy between

Jonathon Walker and Paul Davies was one of the features of Te Awamutu YMI Badminton Club championships.

Only nine points separated the two players af-ter they had gone shot for shot for four games to decide the winner of the B grade and open grade titles.

Davies caused an upset downing the 2005 open grade singles champion 25-23, 21-18 in the B grade fi nal.

But Walker responded magnifi cently, taking out the open grade title to retain his crown.

The former Waikato age group representative prevailed 21-19, 22-20.

For good measure, the cool-headed 33-year-old threw in the men’s open grade and B grade dou-bles titles as well.

He and Glen Organ beat Murray Orr and Scott Yarndley 21-18, 21-19 (open grade), and Brian Murphy and Davies 18-21, 21-19, 21-14 (B grade).

FORDHAM EXTENDEDIf there was an air of inevitability about 2004

and 2005 ladies’ open grade singles champion Gail Fordham retaining her crown, it certainly did not affect the performance of her gallant fi nal’s opponent Susanne Paalvast.

Reputations meant little to the popular club president as she stormed to a 21-16 win in the opening game.

But her joy was short-lived. Fordham weath-ered the storm, gradually gaining the ascendancy to win the last two games 21-12, 21-15.

Fordham also beat Paalvast in the ladies’ B grade singles fi nal, 21-17, 21-9.

The ladies’ open grade doubles went on a roller-coaster ride before Tracey Coburn and Willi Ment-zel took the title with a 21-11, 17-21, 21-12 win over Paalvast and Donna Davies.

The B grade ladies’ doubles fi nal also went to three games, with Fordham and Megan Thomas upsetting the open grade champions Coburn and Mentzel 21-12, 13-21, 21-6.

The vast experience of Waikato Masters repre-sentatives Murray Orr and Mentzel carried them to victory in the open grade mixed doubles.

They beat Organ and Paalvast 22-20, 21-17 in the fi nal after eliminating the top seeds, singles champions Walker and Fordham 11-21, 21-17, 21-17 in the semi-fi nals.

Walker and Fordham lived up to their top seed-ing in the B grade fi nal, beating Organ and Paal-vast 21-15, 21-15.
