Lawyer believes his career may be ‘shot’

He may have been the one with the gun, but James Parlane feels the ‘posse is closing in’ after he was con-victed of shooting protected birds in Te Awamutu District Court on Monday.

Mr Parlane says the convictions put his career as a lawyer in jeopardy.

While he was typically defi ant, la-belling the prosecution ‘unreliable’, he felt the convictions could devastate his career.

At the end of the three-day trial, Judge Russell Calendar found Parlane guilty on two charges of hunt-ing protected spur-winged plover and one each of killing a white faced heron and a little black shag at Lake Roto-manuka in March last year.

Parlane had denied the charges and said forensic tests on the birds should have been done at independent labs.

He also produced an optometrist’s report, indicating his level of blind-ness.

The Judge said he considered the eye witness accounts from a man and his son, who were at a nearby maimai when the offences took place, compel-ling.

And for once the most cutting remark came from the Judge, who repeated the adage that those who represented themselves had fools for clients.

Sentencing will take place at Hamil-ton District Court on November 28.

Readers panel’s post election thoughts READERS HAVE THEIR SAY

TONI FORTUNE is a 35-year-old archivist.

“This election high-lighted the pitfalls of MMP.

NZ First and United Future received less than 10% of the vote their representation/say in Parliament should equal that per-centage.

To hold important cabinet seats and claim to be in opposition is just crazy. If Winston runs true to form they’ll be gone in 18 months.

Those who split their votes between Labour and the Greens must feel quite betrayed that they have ended up with a VERY centre left government.”

WHAT ABOUT YOU?To be included on

our database for future Readers Have Their Say, email [email protected]

MARCUS GOWER is a 28-year-old who has grown up in the district and runs his own IT business.

“The election results were interesting.

New Zealand wanted a change of govern-ment and perhaps we may have a different government now the we had the past three years, one that can rein Helen Clark in perhaps.

I think National lost because areas like South Auckland which has high amounts of welfare users cast enough votes to keep Helen in.

This Government looks like it will be a lot more reserved in what they achieve and I think with the policies that the other coalition parties bring to light all New Zealanders should get something.”

IAIN LENNOX is a retired dairy factory manager

“The outcome of Helen Clark’s govern-ment is amazing as she (for the sake of staying in power) has had to take on board a fair bit of her opposition.

As a result, we can expect to have a mod-erate thinking govern-ment, with promises to at least review many of the ‘social engineering’ laws that have always been her purpose to have in effect.

She has a wonderful ability to adapt to so many of the points that National in particular had as their agenda, and both NZ First and United Future will see that she holds true to these, as the election in-dicated that this is what most Kiwis want.

Helen Clark is a clever politician and I wish her and her ‘team’ best wishes - for all our sakes.”

D O N N A - E I L E E N JELLYMAN is a 21-year-old Christian.

Mixed Member Pro-portional representa-tion (MMP) is a more profi table system to run our government on, be-cause it now means that the smaller parties run the show.

Labour had more free-dom when they joined with the greens.

First Past the Post would have had Labour in full control for the last six years and who knows what trouble they would have put us in then.

Destiny did well with this being their fi rst year - they will go up from here.

Many people may not like what Brian (Tama-ki) has had to say.

He is bringing into Government what I believe in and so I shall continue to support him.

PETER STET is a 48-year-old quarry manager

This is a good exam-ple of MMP in action - hate it or like it, this is what NZ has chosen.

Personally I would have preferred a more business-oriented gov-ernment that rewards hard work and achieve-ment, instead of reward-ing dependence and un-der achievement.

On the night it looked clearcut but as time progressed the parties that had a chance to im-plement some of their policies hung in there and stuck out for what they could get.

And good on them as it has reduced the mo-nopoly Labour had.

There is a swing to the right with a social conscience such as Pe-ter Dunne, the Greens infl uence has been pegged back and then there is Winston - who knows who or what he is going to pick on?

DENNIS CATCH-POLE is a company director.

Elections under MMP clearly do not deliver what the voters want.

We have a Prime Minister who so much wanted to retain power that she sold out the Greens despite their loyalty to Labour.

Downgrading Foreign Affairs as she has done is not in New Zealand’s best interests.

Peters and Dunne showed that their egos are more important than their principles.

The only parties to come out of all this with dignity are the Maori Party and National who would not compromise their stated positions in the elections, and Doug Woolerton who sees Pe-ters for what he is.

The losers were the voters and at the end of the day the country has no vision. And this is called democracy?

ROGER PEAKE is a 71-year-old retired farmer.

Prime Minister Helen Clarke is a very capable woman and if anyone can hold a Government together, she can.

However, with the very strong opposition she now has, and the changing allegiances under our MMP sys-tem according to what legislation is being pro-moted, she will have much greater diffi culty pushing through mat-ters that strike at the things New Zealanders hold dear.

Both our main par-ties are not dramati-cally distant from left or right of ‘Centre’ so I believe the welfare of our society is not going to be determined by what either coalition does, but by we ordi-nary citizens abiding by the law and caring for one another.

Kihikihi lights up

Kihikihi has a reticulated sewerage system on the way, and lately locals and people passing through could have been forgiven for thinking they were travelling through the ‘big smoke’.

As a safety measure, Brian Perry has been utilising moveable traffic lights to control vehicles in the vicinity of major pipeworks on Flat Road entering Kihikihi. Kihikihi resident and Courier

reporter Colin Thorsen, who snapped the shot above, says the contractors are impressing locals with the way they are carrying out the massive project and cleaning up as they go. 307054AD

Judith Cartwright and Jona-thon Gadd have been appointed area managers of Waikato and King Country respectively for the 2006 Census, being conduct-ed in March.

Part of Te Awamutu is included in the Waikato area and the re-mainder in King Country, so the town will receive special atten-tion from both managers.

They will be responsible for managing a huge logistical ex-ercise that will ensure everyone in the area is counted on census night.

For the fi rst time, people will have the option of completing their census forms on-line if they

wish, in the 2006 Census.Traditional paper census forms

will also be available. The census is vitally important

as it provides a snapshot of who we are and where we live - infor-mation that’s critical for local communities as well as local and central government, business and academia.

Many important decisions are made based on census data, in-cluding the distribution of funds for many basic services, such as hospitals, schools and roading.

Statistics New Zealand is cur-rently recruiting district supervi-sors to help run the 2006 Census - with 21 required in this area.

District supervisors will re-cruit, train and lead teams of collectors who will deliver and collect forms to every person and dwelling in New Zealand on census night, which is March 7, 2006.

District supervisors need to be organised people with effective communication and interper-sonal skills, have a good under-standing of their local area, and to be available from December 2, 2005 to April 13, 2006.

Application forms area availa-ble from 0508 CENSUS (0508 236 787), the Statistics New Zealand website www.stats.govt.nz or email [email protected]

MOTHER FIGURE: Lucy (Tammy Warwick-Lee, centre) uses her mothering technique to help neighbour Rosemary (Liz Smith) much to the puzzlement of her husband Terry (Max Ward). 307055AD

A new addition to this year’s Scream Rosetown festival pro-gramme is four one act plays from members of Te Awamutu Light Operatic Society.

The players are a mix of experienced and new ac-tors with a keen interest in theatre.

The group of 14 has been meeting regu-larly with director Coral Taylor on Tuesday nights with the aim of learning more about theatre, gaining experience and enjoying the company of other theatre people.

Now the Tuesday Night Group has been able to develop its own programme and is proud to be part of festival 2005 with ‘Pic-n-Mix’.

The four one act plays are de-scribed by Mrs Taylor as having a

good mix of humour and pathos. They are ‘Mother Figure’ by

Alan Ayckbourne, ‘Day Trippers’ and ‘Dancers’, both by Jean Mc-

Connell and ‘A Couple of Bimbos Sittin’ Round Talkin’’ by Richard Vet-ere.

Liz Smith has a role in each play and Tammy

Warwick-Lee features in all but ‘Dancers’. Joining these

experienced players is another experienced actor and director, Louise Hawkes and two newcom-ers to the stage, Max Ward and Saffron Broom.

‘Mother Figure’ tells the story of Lucy, a stay-at-home mother of three, meeting her new neigh-bours Rosemary and Terry for the fi rst time.

‘Day Trippers’ sees two work-mates, Beryl and Doris, on their

annual fi rm’s outing to an Eng-lish seaside resort.

‘A Couple of Bimbos Sittin’ Round Talkin’’ actually has three wannabe ‘Barbie Doll’ characters, Linda, Nancy and B.B., sitting around talking while waiting for Nancy’s conservative cousin Tess, or is she?

In ‘Dancers’ friends Betty and Wyn sit and chat at a café while waiting for the Saturday Tea Dance on the pier.

The plays open Next Wednes-day evening and run for four nights. There is also a Saturday matinee.

Cast and helpers will serve a homemade supper and Robert Harris coffee during the intermis-sion of the evening shows.

Tickets are available from the Te Awamutu Information Centre and at the door.

Festival openersScream Rosetown Festival

opens tonight at a function at Phil Brown’s ‘Up Close and Personal’ exhibition.

Also on the programme over the next few days are the Gracelands Art Expo at G Net Café, Te Awamutu Embroidery Group show at the Burchell Pavilion, Good Companions Dance at Ngahinapouri Hall, Fam-ily Golf Day at Te Awamutu, Hilary Ramage art show, Gracelands Fun Walk, Tem-ple Cottage Open Day and Altrusa Garden Ramble.

PAGE 6 Te Awamutu Courier, Thursday, November 3, 2005

Winston Churchill said that ‘short words are best, but old words are better’. He became the 20th century’s best re-membered ‘wordsmith’.

In today’s over regulated climate we tend to hold off with the free use of words, lest we render ourselves li-able to slander or a raking over by the media, who will have obtained our written words under the Offi cial In-formation Act.

A senior public servant in the UK once wrote in the margin of a paper he knew was going to viewed by PM Winston Churchill, the deri-sory words ‘Round objects’. One can imagine his chagrin when the PM returned the paper to him with the com-ment, “who is Round and to what does he object?”

In those days when school teachers were quite open with their views about their pupil’s progress, my mathematics master wrote the following words in my school report,” If this boy is to succeed, I sug-

gest he marries into money!” My English teacher was slightly more circumspect and wrote, “Michael has attended my classes!”

My father was not impressed with his son, and suggested, in no uncertain words, that I should do something use-ful with my life, like running away to sea.

Both of us warmed to that idea, and six months later I was steaming down the English Channel en route to New Zealand, as a very jun-ior and seasick indentured apprentice navigator in the British Merchant Navy. The fact that Winston Churchill had referred to the British Merchant Navy as being dom-inated by rum, sodomy and the lash, did not deter me (I

experienced two of them!).

Ten years lat-er, as the Chief Offi cer on my own ship, a sea-man approached me for a job.

English was not his fi rst lan-guage, and he told me he had an excellent ref-erence from his previous Chief Offi cer. The piece of paper he handed me had the words writ-

ten on it, ‘This man works well!’ Unfortunately for this chap, inserted between the words ‘work’ and ‘well’ was a comma. So the message to me was ‘This man works, well!’

Part of my varied career was spent as a ‘Headhunter’. Enquiries from previous employers about prospec-tive placements were often succinct and revealing; for instance, “This young man

has delusions of adequacy”, or ‘This employee should go far; and the sooner he starts, the better for all concerned”, often made my placement decisions much easier. My fa-vourite was “he doesn’t have ulcers, but he is a carrier”.

By the way, I was able to tell my mathematics master in later years that his frank words had helped my career decision making progress, and that I had used his excel-lent teaching to good effect. I told him I had become a Marine Navigator (when sex-tants, the sun and stars and mathematics were the main tools), and later qualifi ed as a Chartered Accountant.

In those heady days I also told him I had aspirations to be Minister of Finance.

Despite his age he was still sharp as a tack and his words didn’t fail him. He quickly re-sponded, “There you are Cox, I told you you’d be a failure!”

My life has been full of words and I hope you enjoy these few.

Words make world go round

By Chamber of Commerce executive officer Michael Cox.

Twins drop in at Pirongia

New Zealand rowing’s golden girls, Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell visited Pirongia School recently.

The Olympic gold medallists sent their medals around the school to each classroom, with pupils (and teachers) getting the chance to ‘touch gold’.

The twins were impressed with an audio visual presentation made about them and the singing of the school song by the children.

They inter-reacted comfortably with the stu-dents - even if one was cheeky enough to ask their age (31).

They also revealed that they cringe when they see themselves on the ‘love to boogie’ New Zealand beef and lamb TV advertisement (with Waipa’s other ‘golden girl’ Sarah Ulmer).

This Saturday the twins will receive the FISA Rowing Female Crew of the Year medals at the World Rowing Forum Gala Dinner in Istanbul.

They gained the top spot in the women’s double in 2002 and have remained there ever since.

The duo won their fi rst World Championship gold in the women’s double in 2002 and, at the same time, established themselves as new World Best time holders in 6:38.78, a time that still stands today.

A year later they were awarded the FISA Female Crew of the Year for 2003 following their second World Rowing Championship gold medals.

In between these World Championship golds, Caroline and Georgina won their fi rst Olympic gold medal last year at Athens.

They continued an unbroken winning streak in the double through to this year until suffering a photo-fi nish defeat at the Lucerne BearingPoint Rowing World Cup. In a close-fought fi nal the duo were pipped for fi rst place at the line.

Caroline and Georgina recovered and then came back to win comfortably in the fi nal at this year’s World Rowing Championships.

In addition to being successful in the double, they are also accomplished individually. This sibling rivalry has also helped Georgina become the fastest woman in the world on the indoor rowing machine.

The identical twins have been named as the Athlete Ambassadors for New Zealand’s 2010 World Championship Hosting rights bid.

Ten-year-old Puahue School pupil Michael Graham (right) is interested in conservation, and especially, our native birds.

A keen and avid artist also, he was inspired by the Mitre 10 Takahe Rescue programme to combine his interests in an ef-fort to help save the endangered bird and raise awareness for its plight.

Michael spends much of his spare time drawing and sketch-ing in great detail, and also an eye for colour, plus his family belongs to the Kiwi Conserva-tion Club.

In the recent holidays he put in the time to complete a pastel and dye A3 sized work (below) for the Mitre 10 Takahe Rescue art competition, and was chosen as the local winner.

The competition was held to celebrate the launching of the Takahe Rescue programme.

For his efforts Michael re-ceived a lifesize Takahe

Artwork inspired by Takahe Rescue

His work joins other store winners for an overall winner to be chosen.

That winner receives a trip for a family of four to visit the home of Takahe Rescue at Te Anau.

Mitre 10 Takahe Rescue aims to help the Takahe back from the brink of ex-tinction.

There are only 171 Taka-he left so it is going to take a great deal of support and work for New Zea-landers to be able to en-joy the Takahe’s beauty for years to come. The Takahe was

thought to be extinct, but was

rediscovered in 1948.Young people are proving their

worth in the fi ght to save the bird.

A letter from 10-year-old Southland schoolgirl Sophie prompted Mitre 10 to join DOC in the fi ght to save the Takahe.

Sophie is a volunteer at the Burwood Breeding Centre just out of Te Anau and wrote seek-ing support for the Takahe.

The letter came to the atten-tion of Mitre 10 who felt Sophie spoke for many New Zealanders wanting to protect this bird.

The sponsorship was made possible by the New Zealand Na-tional Parks and Conservation Foundation.

Three Te Awamutu young-sters experienced the joy of the new Variety Liberty Swing launched at Hamilton’s Lake Domain last Saturday.

Eleven-year-old Tegan Crotty was the fi rst to fl y free on the swing followed by Brent Walker and Luke Mateara.

Many watched as Tegan soared high on the swing with the help of Lorraine Taylor, chief executive of Variety - The Children’s Charity.

Asked afterwards if she had enjoyed the experience, Tegan’s happy face said it all.

“That was so cool!,” she said. The Variety Liberty Swing

is a gift to Hamilton from Va-riety – The Children’s Charity. The swing provides an exciting opportunity for children with disabilities to be part of the playground-fun.

Hamilton’s Mayor Michael Redman says that the Lib-erty Swing is a great addition to Hamilton’s leisure facilities and the impetus behind the project is closely aligned with his coun-cil’s Draft Disability Policy.

“In our city, there are close to 1000 children under the age of 14 who have a physical disability. Providing activities and facilities that enable these members of our community to participate more fully in activi-ties within Hamilton is a key part of achieving a vibrant city.”

Variety’s Lorraine Taylor says being able to ride a swing is an experience that most children take for granted.

“Thanks to the support of Trillian Trust and our Gold Heart Sponsors, the Variety Liberty Swing is now available to Waikato children with dis-abilities who may never have experienced the freedom and fun of being on a swing,” she says.

Children from CCS Waikato and other lucky children also

enjoyed the new Liberty Swing.Wheelchair racing Paralym-

pian Ross Ormsby, formerly of Ngutunui, even had a go.

The loud and colourful Vari-ety Bash cars provided an extra treat for the children when they were given rides around the lake.

The event was supported by

the Hamilton City Council, CCS Waikato, Sport Waikato and coincided with the launch of the SPARC Push Play initiative in Hamilton.

To access the Liberty Swing, a key can be collected from the Lakeside Café. A $10 bond is re-quired, which will be refunded upon the return of the key.

Brigade saved bacon

TE AWAMUTU firefighters damp down hotspots at the Waikeria Road piggery. 3070511BD

Two pigs inspect the damage after Tuesday night’s fire. 3070511AD

Te Awamutu Volunteer Fre Brigade members got no time to savour Makybe Diva’s stunning third Melbourne Cup win - they were off to a fi re at a Waikeria Road piggery almost straight after the race.

The fi re had been burning for quite a while before it was noticed and the piggery was extensively damaged.

The piggery building of around 100 square metres contained a number of concrete pens and it had a timber frame and corrugated iron cladding and roof.

Fortunately, only a few pigs were killed.

Firefi ghters damped down hotspots and also had to extin-guish fi res in adjacent trees.

As soon as the warm weather hits, party lovers’ thoughts turn to the great outdoors.

Great for entertaining - whether your ‘outdoors’ is a patio, a landscaped garden or a simple backyard, the lure of parties outside is hard to resist.

If the thought of having friends over for a party turns your blood cold ... warm up to the idea with the following hints.

One of the most important things to remember is that your friends are com-ing over to spend time with you, so having the time to enjoy their company is a priority.

Keep things creative, but simple, so you have the time to appreciate your own party.

SELF SERVE MEALS Minimal hostess involve-

ment, maximum guest enjoyment, and a main-course summer salad make for a lovely party.

Consider laying out chopped salads, grilled vegetables, slices of cheese, tomatoes, various herbed oils and dressings etc - things that can be made well in advance affording you more time to spend with your guests.

Serve an olive oil foccacia bread or French bread from the barbecue grill and let your guests slather, sprinkle and top their own meal.

Another idea that uses the same principle are tacos. Set out the items and let your guests be crea-tive.

Make your party memorable with a signature drink. Margaritas and summer go hand-in-hand, they taste great and they’re always fun.

SAFETY FIRST Its up to you to make safety your top priority. Be

aware that summer heat can cause dehydration and heat exhaustion and alcohol tends to speed up these

reactions. Provide your guests with refuge from the sun with

colorful umbrellas and seating in shaded areas. Have plenty of cool drinks available - make sure

there are both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options - so your guests can switch if they want or need to.

Keep a taxi service number at hand in case one of your guests has too much to drink. You want your loved ones around for the next party!

Also be ready for the inconveniences of nature. Nothing is less entertaining than a bug bite, sunburn, splinters or a scraped knee.

Stock a fi rst-aid kit with bug repellent, sunscreen, band-aids, hydrogen peroxide and other remedies for minor ailments.

Keep it on hand in case you need it.

Taking these pre-cautions will ensure that you and your guests will be able to party, party, party.

CLEAN-UP DUTY Many stores offer really nice paper or plastic plates

with plastic ware that matches. To avoid hours of post-party cleanup and dish pa-

trol, stock up on these as well as plastic glasses and cups - this will also prevent injuries due to broken glass. Also, strategically place receptacles through-out your entertaining area so guests can dispose of their trash during the party and save you some valuable time.

If you recycle, make sure that you provide separate bins for cans and ‘regular’ rubbish. If you follow these simple tips, your adventures in outdoor entertaining can be a piece of cake.

Relax, invite your friends, fi x a cool drink, enjoy the fresh air and bring on the fun.

Take your guests outdoors

Tips for planning pool partiesA pool party! What

a great idea. No better way to combine cooling off and having a fun time with friends.

The best way to cel-ebrate warm weather and good spirits is to host a festive gather-ing. Whether it’s an exotic luau or a beach theme, you can plan the perfect summer party.

ALOHA Turn an ordinary

backyard barbecue into a fun-fi lled luau this summer. Simple decorations like exotic fl owers, grass skirts and colorful leis will transport guests into a Pacifi c Island para-dise.

Cut up fresh fruit to make refreshing, tropical kebabs and stir up a creamy tropi-cal sorbet punch.

When the sun starts to set, serve up Ha-waiian pizzas.

Make them with luscious pineap-ple, tangy barbecue sauce and lightly sea-soned chunks of juicy chicken.

Enjoy your feast while listening to a little island music, and top the night off with a wacky hula contest.

SURF’S UPGrab sunscreen and

some towels to throw a fun beach shindig.

Use surfboards, bo-ogie boards, buckets, spades, shells and drift wood to set the scene.

Put some ‘party pool’ colour into your pool to get it looking really blue,

add some infl atable beach balls or toys and a fl oating bar for drinks (all available at Russ

Water Services) Add some great bar-

becue food and plenty of cold drinks for guests to enjoy after they get out of the water and you’re sure to have a great

‘beach’ party. POOL PARTY TIPS◆ Set up a table for the

children to make their own wind chimes at the party. Gather an assortment of sea-shells from visits to the beach, colorful string and a hanger (piece of driftwood). Kids will love making a summer decoration for the whole family to enjoy.

◆ Beach and pool parties are fun, but lots of alcoholic drinks and swimming don’t mix. Be a re-sponsible host, have some non-alcoholic drinks and designate a lifeguard through-out the festivities.

◆ After your guests hang up their towels, light up the party with beautiful fl oating can-dles in the pool.

◆ Don’t forget the citronella candles. Pesky mosquitoes and biting fl ies can put an early end to a perfect evening.

◆ Even though the sun might be shining, pack a fl ashlight in your beach bag. Nothing is worse than trying to fi nd your belongings after the sun goes down.

Easy party snack optionsSunshine, an outdoor setting, drinks, good

company and a selection of dips and dippers - it must be summer.

Dips are an easy way to feed a crowd. They can easily be made in advance and stored in the fridge until needed. Serve them with crackers, bread, pita crisps or a selection of attractively sliced vegetables.

HUMMUSYou can fl avour this dip with more of the spices

if you wish, or add a few sundried tomatoes or roasted red peppers, anything that you like the look of.

Just add it to the mixture as you blend it. It is better to cook your own chickpeas for hummus as the canned ones tend to be a bit on the hard side.

1 c dry chickpeas (cooks up to 2 cups)

Juice of 2 lemons1 small onionA little oil1/2 tsp grd cumin1/2 tsp coriander3 cloves 1/4 cup olive oil1/2 cup waterSalt, pepperChop onion fi nely

and place in a frying pan with a little oil. Cook gently until soft and then add the cumin and coriander.

Cook stirring constantly, until the spices are aromatic. Place the cooked chickpeas in the bowl of a food processor and blend until fi nely chopped.Add the rest of the ingredients and proc-ess until smooth.

TOMATO DIPThis is a fairly simple dip but tasty none the less.

It is particularly good if heated and spooned over taco chips piled on an oven tray. Sprinkle over

some cheese and place under the grill until it has melted. Finish with a few dollops of sour cream.

1/2 red onion fi nely chopped 3-4 tomatoes chopped3 tblsp tomato paste300gm can red kidney beans1 teaspoon ground cumin1 tblsp sweet chilli sauce1/4 cup waterSalt and pepper to tasteDrain and rinse the kidney beans. Place in a small pot along with all the other

ingredients and bring to a simmer. Cook gently for 5-

10 minutes. Mash to break up the beans a little.

SPINACH, SOUR CREAM DIP

This creamy spin-ach dip is perfect served with a selec-tion of chopped veg-etables.

1 bag spinach 1/4 c mayonnaise2/3 c sour cream1 clove garlic1/2 red onion30gm parmesan1 packet dried vegetable soupTear the stalks off

the spinach and wash well in at least two changes of water. Place in a pot with just the water that is clinging to the leaves.

Cover with a close fi tting lid and cook over a high heat, shaking the pot occasionally until the leaves are wilted (this will only take a few min-utes).

Drain and leave to cool. When cool enough to handle, squeeze out as much water as you pos-sibly can and chop fi nely.

Place in a bowl and stir in the remaining ingre-dients. Sprinkle top with a little paprika.

If you have a few friends coming and don’t have much time, these ideas may be of some help.

QUICK PARTY SNACK IDEAS

Thaw two sheets of savoury short pastry, roll it out just a little more and cut circles that are large enough to line mini muffi n tins.

Ease the pastry into the holes - there is no need to grease them - and give the base of each a couple of pricks with a fork.

Leave to rest in the fridge for 15 minutes.

Bake in a 190 deg oven until they are lightly browned. Cool a little before removing from the tray.

If you don’t have pastry, cut circles out of white toast slice bread and bake in the same manner.

Meanwhile, mix together 150gm of cream cheese (not the spreadable variety) with half a cup of fi nely chopped dried apricots, a quarter of a cup of chopped craisins or raisins and the very fi nely grated rind and juice of half a lemon.

Mix well and, using two teaspoons form into small balls. Roll in poppy seeds or fi nely chopped pistachio nuts or lightly toasted sesame seeds.Chill these balls well and just before serving, pop one into each pastry or bread case to serve. This will make 24.

Another easy snack which can be made in a few minutes is these little savoury pinwheels.

Thaw out two sheets of fl akey pas-try. In a small bowl, mix together 3 or 4 tablespoons of cream cheese with about 150gm of feta cheese, three or four fi nely chopped sundried tomatoes and a small amount of fi nely chopped fresh basil.

Spread this mixture evenly over the thawed pastry, and then roll quite fi rmly from the long side. Cut carefully into

1cm lengths, no larger, and place on a baking tray.

You may fi nd that you have to gently form them back into circles.Brush over with a little beaten egg before baking at 190 deg for about 8 minutes.*

If you have some ready made pizza bases or a bread maker, you can make tasty mini pizzas.

Cut out small circles or triangles and top each one with your favourite pizza topping. It may be a little smoked chicken topped with brie and a drizzle of plum sauce, or a slice of smoked

salmon with avocado, a dollop of cràeme fraiche and a light sprinkle of grated cheese.

Make a variety, including some with plain toppings for your more conserva-tive guests or children.

If you want to provide something more substantial for a casual group, cover an oven tray with nacho chips. Heat up some chilli beans and some

hot tomato salsa. Dob these over the

chips fairly evenly, them cover with a light sprinkle of grated cheese.

Place under the grill until the cheese is melted and bubbly; watch that you don’t burn the chips.

Remove from the oven and dot over some sour cream.Serve straight from the tray and have a lot of paper napkins available.

These always go down well, especially with chil-dren.

When all else fails, go and check out the freezer section of the supermarket. There are a number of fro-zen cocktail snacks avail-

able that just need to be preheated. A tasty salsa or sauce for dipping, either homemade or from the deli section will add that extra zing.

If you want to serve something sweet, you can’t go past a large bowl full of chocolate-coated nuts, caramels etc interspersed with fresh strawber-ries, when they are in season.

Otherwise, bake your favourite slice and cut it into small triangles, or make mini versions of biscuits to serve with coffee.

Three delectable summer dips

Whether its a huge formal bash with a band or a smaller, relaxed gathering for a group of friends in an intimate setting there are a few basics to remember:

• Invite guests well in advance to ensure maximum attendance (social calendars get booked quickly around the Christmas holidays in particular).

• Create a theme for the party and advise guests beforehand so that they can wear something suitable, bring theme-appropriate items and join the fun.

• Chill glasses and bottles an hour in ad-vance of the guests’ arrival. Offering a drink as soon as guests walk in breaks the ice and starts a conversation.

• Provide non-alco-holic alternatives for the

designated drivers and guests who choose not to drink. As the host, be sure to monitor the amount of alcohol con-sumed and don’t be

afraid to take away car keys.

• Mood lighting is es-sential - fairy lights are always a good start.

• Make sure there is

plenty of suitable food available

• Have the number of a taxi fi rm avaiable for guests to get home safely.

Cut all the fuss, just go by busIf you’re planning a Christmas

outing for staff or friends but not exactly sure ‘what’ or ‘where’, Key Travel can help.

The local bus company has plenty of ideas for an interesting day or night out.

Whether you want something relaxing like an Auckland Harbour Cruise or prefer the bustle and excitement of a casino, Key Travel can get you safely there and home

again with little fuss.John Pye at Key Travel says

they have a selection of venues available and everything from a mini-bus to a 61 seater coach to transport guests.

Key Travel actually has plenty of entertainment options year-round as part of their free travel club.

Trips range from visits to Auck-land markets and the Ellerslie Flower Show to three days around

the East Coast or overseas tours.Shows and concerts are also

popular - many selling out within days of being advertised in the Te Awamutu Courier.

If you would like to know more about Key Travel call the offi ce (871 6373) or contact John Pye (021 951 786 or [email protected]).

Hawthorne hot

LOOK AT THAT: Chelsey Hawthorne competing in the World Cup qualifier at Kihikihi Domain earlier this year. File photo

By Colin ThorsenKaipaki’s Chelsey Hawthorne is

odds-on favourite to win the Mitavite Horse Trials at Kihikihi Domain at the weekend.

Over 230 riders from Whangarei to Wellington, along with a handful from the South Island, have entered.

Hawthorne’s chances have been enhanced by the unavailability of New Zealand’s top 12 riders, who will be competing against Australia in the Trans Tasman ‘test’ at Adelaide.

The 20-year-old was unlucky not to make the team after a top year, including being overall winner of the advanced class national leaderboard.

She would have been among the fa-vourites to win at Kihikihi even if all the ‘big guns’ were turning out.

In last year’s corresponding event, Hawthorne fi nished third behind Alex De Luca on Clifton Checkers and second placed Stephanie Smith on Just Jazz II.

If that wasn’t enough to catch the eye of the national selectors, she was fastest of all the advanced competi-tors in the FEI Eventing World Cup qualifi er, also at Kihikihi, in April this year.

That star-studded fi eld included

Olympian Matthew Grayling who took out the World Cup qualifi er for the second year running.

Hawthorne made up for a disap-pointing dressage, with an outstand-ing fast, clear crossountry round, and only one rail penalty in the showjumping.

She fi nished second behind Gray-ling after being ninth after the dres-sage.

Hawthorne has spent a lot of time and energy with Look At That over the winter working on improving their dressage performance.

They have been training with former New Zealand international rider Fiona Craig in Auckland.

“Fiona’s been great. Hopefully we’ll get good dressage scores from now on and not start on the back foot going into the crosscountry.”

Waikato, led by Hawthorne, will defend their Mitavite regional teams event title.

The Horse Trials commence Satur-day at 8.30am with the dressage and showjumping.

Hawthorne will be in action at 3pm.

The crowd pleasing crossountry is on Sunday.

A Turbocharger is an exhaust drivensupercharger blowing air into theengine under pressure. It is used onsmaller engines to increase poweroutput. A turbocharger harnessesengine exhaust energy and improvesefficiency, thereby increasing fueleconomy and reducing exhaustemissions. It works particularly well ona diesel engine.

In an ordinary engine the exhaustgasses are blown out the exhaust. Aturbocharger diverts these gasses intoa manifold, then into the turbinehousing. Here the gasses blow acrossblades of the turbine wheel. When theengine load factor is high enough, theturbine wheel spins at high speed.

Past the turbine wheel, butconnected to it and rotating with it, isa compressor wheel. It pulls the gassesinto the compressor housing.Centrifugal forces throw the airoutwards, causing the hot pressurised

gasses to flow out of theturbocharger into theengine cylinder.

An intercooler isfrequently fitted to aturbocharger. This deviceacts like a radiator at the pressureoutlet of the turbocharger. Outside airflows through and cools thepressurised gasses coming from theturbocharger. Cooler air is denser, inthat it contains more oxygen. Thenengine power is increased. There is alsoa device called a waste gate whichlimits the maximum pressure whichcan accumulate in the turbocharger.Excessive pressure can cause enginedamage.

Turbochargers need regular checkingand servicing, but trouble usuallyshows up as inadequate boostpressure. Proper servicing as scheduledby the manufacturer is highlyrecommended by us.

BARGAIN TIMBER& FENCING SUPPLIES

Pirongia made the ideal start to the Southern Waikato Valley one-day cricket competition beating Pio Pio by six wickets.

Winning the toss and electing to bat paid dividends for captain Rich-ard Parsons, who scored 102 retired at Pirongia on Saturday.

Mark Harrison added a well com-piled 80, Jason McGrath 24 and Andrew Parsons 28no, helping the home team reach a mammoth total of 296/4.

Pio Pio’s best bowler was D. Wrack with 2-46.

The visitors could only muster 152 all out in 33 overs.

Wrack featured again with 45 and O. Hooper, 30.

Outstanding bowlers for Pirongia were Andrew MacPherson, with 2-17, and Andrew Parsons, 3-13.

Last weeks 20/20 game against Otorohanga was called off due to weather, with next weeks game played in Morrinsville.

ASB Bank Te Awamutu Sports were unable to transfer their out-standing pre-season 20/20 form into the longer version of the game on Saturday.

Minus their inspirational captain Graeme Stewart, TA Sports lost to Morrinsville by 72 runs at Te Awamutu College.

Too many wides (33) by the bowlers and gifting Morrinsville too many soft wickets led to their demise.

Morrinsville were dismissed for 145 in 42 overs, with David Tid-marsh 21, T. McKinnon 23 and G Lane 35 scoring the bulk of the runs.

Bowling honours for TA Sports were shared by Arthur Lawrence, with 2-21, Jared Bayly, 2-19, Ham-ish Forsman, 2-15 and Sam Stretton 2-25.

Forsman’s opening knock of 30 stood out like a beacon in an oth-erwise sorry looking TA Sports scoreboard. He was the only player to reach double fi gures as the home team capitulated to 74 all out in 19 overs.

Chief destroyers were Jason Lau-rence, with 4-12, Chris Lane, 2-19 and Chris Mourits, 2-27.

Hillcrest High beat Te Awamutu College 1st XI by 98 runs to retain the Dave Hoskin Trophy.

The trophy holders scored 198/9, with Leandre Scheepers (44) top scoring.

Josh Nelson was the most success-ful home team bowler with 3-50 off eight overs.

The winning and losing of the match occurred in the fi fth over of Te Awamutu’s innings when they lost the wickets of Nelson and An-drew Powell lbw, and William Sams bowled by Adam Flegg.

They were eventually dismissed for 101, with Levi Jamieson top scor-ing with 17 and Michael Hatton 16.

Sevens stars set to razzle dazzle

There is a strong chance the host team will feature promi-nently in the Te Awamutu Sports Ambreed Club Sevens at Albert Park on Saturday.

Te Awamutu Sports Green will be led by experienced player-coach Ray Stowe.

The team contains plenty of players with Waikato repre-sentative honours, ranging from secondary school to the NPC and sevens teams.

They are Ryan Meacheam, Anthony Crowley, Carl Walton, Kieran Hurrell, Johnny Bird, Jordan Craig and Jamie Muir.

The side also has Fijian fl air in the form of Setariki Nabanisau and Inoke Tuibua, consistent 15-a-side and sevens performer Artemus Mudalier and new-comer Grant Johnstone.

Johnstone represented North Otago at the sevens nationals and made the South Island un-ion’s 15-a-side development team before recently moving here.

Te Awamutu Sports Green are fresh from winning the fi nal round of the Waikato sevens series hosted by Hamilton Old Boys Club.

The club has also entered a second ‘Gold’ team, coached by Hayden Hepburn and Martyn Steffert.

It will comprise a mixture of young, up-and-coming players and experience from within club ranks.

Club manager, Keith Parsons reports that numbers are up for this year’s tournament.

Twenty teams will vie for the title and prizemoney.

Waikato supplies 11 of the en-tries, Counties (4), Bay of Plenty (4) and Thames Valley (1).

Parsons says it is hard to pick

a winner this year with so many good teams turning out.

Of the Waikato clubs, Fraser Tech, Morrinsville and TA Sports all showed good form in the Waikato club sevens series, while Hamilton OB and Hautapu are always strong.

Counties clubs Karaka and Ar-dmore Marist, who both featured strongly in the championship

round at Albert Park last year, and Rotorua club side Rotoiti, are all fi nals contenders.

Four pools of fi ve will contest the round-robin, kicking off at 1pm.

The top team in each section will automatically qualify for the championship semi-fi nals.

Finals are scheduled for around 6pm.

RAY STOWE, pictured fending off Hamilton Old Boys’ Andrew Donald, will captain Te Awamutu Sports’ Green team in Saturday’s Ambreed Club Sevens at Albert Park. 3070521AD

CINEMA SCENEPride and Prejudice

The glorious world of Jane Austen is at last brought back to the big screen in all its romance, wit and emotional force in Pride and Prejudice.

Faithful to the setting and period of the beloved novel and fi lmed entirely on location in the UK, this is the fi rst movie version of the story in 65 years.

The classic tale of love and misunderstanding unfolds in class-conscious England near the close of the 18th century.

The fi ve Bennet sisters - Elizabeth, or Lizzie (Kiera Knightly), Jane (Rosamund Pike), Lydia (Jena Malone), Mary (Talulah Riley), and Kitty (Carey Mulligan) - have been raised well aware of their mother’s (two-time Academy Award nominee Brenda Blethyn) fi xation on fi nding them husbands and securing set futures.

The spirited and intelligent Elizabeth, however, strives to live her life with a broader perspective, as encouraged by her doting father (Donald Suth-erland). When wealthy bachelor Mr Bingley (Simon Woods) takes up residence in a nearby mansion, the Bennets are abuzz.

Amongst the man’s sophisticated circle of Lon-

don friends and the infl ux of young militia offi cers, surely there will be no shortage of suitors for the Bennet sisters.

Eldest daughter Jane, serene and beautiful, seems poised to win Mr Bingley’s heart.

For her part, Lizzie meets with the handsome and - it would seem - snobbish Mr Darcy (Matthew Mac-fayden), and the battle of the sexes is joined.

Their encounters are frequent and spirited yet far from encouraging.

Lizzie fi nds herself even less inclined to accept a marriage proposal from a distant cousin, Mr Collins (Tom Hollander), and - supported by her father - stuns her mother and Mr Collins by declining.

When the heretofore good-natured Mr Bingley abruptly departs for London, devastating Jane, Liz-zie holds Mr Darcy culpable for contributing to the heartbreak. But a crisis involving youngest sister Lydia soon opens Lizzie’s eyes to the true nature of her relationship with Mr Darcy.

The ensuing rush of feelings leaves no one un-changed, and inspires the Bennets and everyone around them to reaffi rm what is most important in life.

Te Awamutu Courier and Tracs give readers the chance to celebrate Pavarotti’s ‘Farewell World Tour’ by winning a copy of ‘The Best of Luciano Pavarotti’ CD. The album features 35 tracks, including three bonus tracks from Pavarotti’s debut EP recorded in 1964.

The Farewell World Tour of the world’s most popu-lar classical artist, Luciano Pavarotti will give New Zealand audiences the chance to join fans around the world in saying a fi nal goodbye to one of the greatest tenors of all time.

He plays the North harbour Stadium on Satur-day, November 12 with acclaimed conductor Leone Magiera; guest soprano Simona Todaro and accom-panied by the Auckland Philharmonia.

Tickets are available from Red Tickets.Pavarotti recently celebrated his 40th anniversary

as an opera singer and has sold in excess of a stag-gering 100 million recordings. A household name for most of his amazing career, the great tenor`s impact on the world of music has been enormous.

Broadening the horizons of classical music and bringing untold numbers of new fans to his art, his thrilling voice and unique personality have touched

countless people throughout the world. He celebrat-ed his 70th birthday last month.

As he bids goodbye to the stages of the world, Pavarotti performs both sides of the repertoire that has endeared him to fans worldwide. His twin signature roles of Rodolfo in `La Boheme` and Ca-varadossi in `Tosca` are represented with glorious arias and duets from these operas. Master of the bel canto repertoire, he brings tenderness to the duet from `L`amico Fritz` by Mascagni as well as songs by Bellini.

To be in to win simply put your name, address and daytime contact number on the back of a standard sized envelope, address it to the ‘Pavarotti Compe-tition’ and make sure it reaches our offi ce by 5pm next Tuesday.
