Backing sought for new museumMany readers will be

unaware that the Te Awa-mutu Museum Trust Boardexists to promote themuseum and its activities.

The Board holds the col-lection on behalf of thedistrict’s people, havingtaken over that role fromthe Historical Society whenmembers decided to del-egate its museum manage-ment functions.

We look forward to 2014,

which is not only the 150thAnniversary of the Battle ofOrakau, but also the year inwhich we welcome Uenukuback from Te Papa.

In the meantime, theBoard wholeheartedlysupports the idea of a newmuseum, and seeks supportfrom a wide cross-section ofthe public for that cam-paign.

Although our consti-tution provides for two

Trustees nominated by theWaipa District Council, weare completely independ-ent, and will be makingregular submissions tocouncil as it firms up itsplans.

We would like to hearfrom potential supportersof the museum and itsobjectives.

Club treated like ‘bunch of idiots’Nobody in their right

mind would spend over $2million on plans and quan-tity surveying without theendorsement of the com-munity.

Back in 2003 the Cam-bridge Swimming ClubCommittee found theupgrade of the swimmingpool facilities had beenmysteriously droppedfrom the 10-Year Plan.

A group of interestedpeople and club membersstarted negotiations withthe district council.

Many different ideas

were explored and theysettled on a design basedon concept drawings theyhad drawn up using aheated 25m indoor pool atthe end of the existing 50mpool as original lyintended.

In 2009, after muchdeliberation, a high pres-sure deputation from thecouncil descended on thegroup with a set of draw-ings and told them Option6 was the only choice, takeit or leave it.

The pool complex hadhad little or no mainten-

ance and even the toddler’spool was concreted over, rather than fixing theplumbing, further reduc-ing the services offered atthe complex. Whencontacted recently theauthor of the originalcouncil engineer’s reporton the pool conditionstated the pool itself was insound condition. All alongthe council has treated theclub members like a bunchof idiots.

Council ‘splits hairs’ on planningWaipa District Council is splitting hairs

stating charges are completely separatefrom the draft annual plan.

Common sense indicates the increasedcharges should be in the Council Flyer.

I believe Council is trying to hide thesechanges.

The final decision is voted on byCouncillors on May. 28.

There is time to stop these increases, as

much as 10 percent, by talking to your localCouncillor.

Instead of charging extra, Councilshould look at saving money.

For the record, I presented a secondsubmission on fee increases and spoke toCouncillors during submissions hearing.

I told senior Council staff I thought theywere unethical and almost corrupt.

MALCOLM HUME

Don’t call me ‘dear’I read with interest an article my

brother gave me that was in the WaikatoTimes written by Denise Irvine and fullysupport her views.

Denise, a mature woman, age wise, found that the colouring of her hair seem toindicate that she was now a ‘dear or love’when turning platinum, fancy colourchoice, and going about her shopping anddaily activities.

Like Denise I have not sought out bottlesof hair colour and just let my locks turnfrom fair to silver. After all that’s prettynatural.

What is not natural is that I am nowbeing tagged ‘dear or love’ by maturewomen, some obviously with bottle col-oured hair, when I shop. Some turn fromfriendly to sultry when one mentions‘please don’t call me dear’ my name is . . .

My Mum can call me love or dear, butnot a shop assistant or anyone else whoserves me. Do men have the same problemwhen they go bald in their 20s or grey intheir 40s. Maybe not. So why do womenhave to put up with the constant ‘dear orlove’?

People, more particular mature women,do not need a label. Would that same salesassistant/check out operator say ‘baldy orlove’ to my 20 plus nephew, I rather thinknot.

A thank you, and not a thank you dear,or can I help you as apposed to can I helpyour love/dear would more than suffice.

Hey, I am not the only one who has thisniggle.

My Grandmother at 80 plus wasoffended by it some decades ago when usinga pedestrian crossing in Takapuna.

Possibly a younger person thought sheneeded help and said ‘can I help you dear.’

Nana snared I am not your ‘dear’ andwent about her business.

A simple may I help you would havebought about a much friendlier andwelcomed response.

Come on retailers in Te Awamutu, dohave a word in the ear of your staff andsuggest they stop calling more maturewomen ‘dear or love’.

A — TC030209GJ02

FLASHBACK: Bob Vaile in 2009 when he wasrecognised for contributing half-a-century ofservice as a Justice of the Peace.

OBITUARY: Robert(Bob) Owen Vaile

Long-serving Te AwamutuDeputy Mayor and Mayor Bob Vailestarted life in Hamilton on February16, 1925.

The youngest of five children, hegrew up on the family farm inNewstead and started his schoolingin Hillcrest and completed it atMount Albert Grammar.

He was a good student, especiallyat mathematics, and developed a lovefor all sports, excelling at rugby, athletics and boxing.

On leaving school he started workat Sargoods, where his main job wasto clear the stock from the wharves.

At this time he was introduced toBarbara and they subsequentlymarried in 1949.

Shortly after Mr Vaile’s brotherJock, who had a shoe store inCambridge, suggested his brotherpurchase a shoe store in Te Awa-mutu, the beginning of a long andfruitful relationship with the com-munity.

Initially the couple lived in Hamil-ton and Mr Vaile bussed to TeAwamutu, but they soon shifted intoa flat in Park Road then bought theirfirst home in Palmer Street, wherethey lived for the next 46 years.

By the time they left Palmer Streetthere were only two original rooms ofthe house remaining.

Mr Vaile was a great do-it-yourselfer and particularly loved tocreate things using wood.

He always had a veggie garden, forhis family and to share with theneighbourhood.

Family was his number one prior-ity and they always came first.

Malcolm, Denise and Allison grewup in a close knit family unit withtheir parents always encouragingand supporting their children, as wellas each other.

Mr Vaile’s achievements outsideof family were numerous, spanningcommunity and sporting organisa-tions. These were rewarded in 1989when he was awarded the QSM forPublic Service in the Queen’s NewYear Honours. He was humbled bythe recognition, but felt this wasmore of an honour for the commun-ity rather than solely for himself.

He felt he was never able toachieve what he did without thehelp of others, particularly hiswife Barbara and alwaysappreciated her total love andsupport over so many years.

Mr Vaile served 24 years onTe Awamutu Borough Council,15 as Deputy Mayor and nine asMayor; was a Justice of thePeace since 1958; marriage cele-brant since 1977; active memberof Jaycees; life member of TeAwamutu Fire Brigade; chair-man of Waikato Civil DefenceCommittee; chairman of theHamilton Airport Authority;honorary member of RotaryInternational; patron of Te Awa-mutu Brass, Te Awamutu High-land Pipe Band, Te AwamutuUnited and then Te AwamutuSports rugby clubs and Te Awa-mutu Rugby Sub Union; chair-man of Te Awamutu St JohnAmbulance.

Through Jaycees he wasinvolved with numerous com-munity projects including theoriginal museum and FreemanCourt and, later while also onCouncil the Palmer Street pen-sioner units and the Rose Gar-dens.

Upon being elected to TeAwamutu Borough Council, and made Deputy Mayor to NedFreeman by his fellow Council-lors, he was appointed chair-man of the important WorksCommittee.

Projects completed in histime included the presentlibrary and museum, Palmer

Street pensioner units, present FireStation, a new water source of TeAwamutu’s water supply, the waterreservoir on Taylors Hill anddevelopment of the stadium in Doug-las Avenue.

Examples of his vision was thepurchase of land on Paterangi Roadfor future sewerage needs, and plan-ning for a cycle track at the stadiumwhich was later constructed in 1984during his mayoralty.

Mr Vaile was to the fore incelebrating the centenary of the Te

Awamutu Borough in 1984 and theproduction of the centennial bookFrontier Town.

He was instrumental inestablishing a very strong sister townlink with Moree in northern NSW.Moree has Bob Vaile Park in recogni-tion of his leadership and contri-bution to the partnership.

He was a rugby player with TeAwamutu United, then coach beforetaking up refereeing for severalseasons.

On the administrative side, heserved as president, then waspatron until amalgamation withOld Boys in 1991.

He was a driver in achievingamalgamation of the two clubsand subsequent joining by anumber of other codes to formTe Awamutu Rugby Sports andRecreation Club which is now ablueprint for a successfulregional sports-house.

In 2002 Bob was presentedwith a plaque to acknowledgehis 50 years of service to TeAwamutu Rugby.

The Vailes were foundationmembers of the Te AwamutuSquash Club and Mr Vaileplayed golf with enthusiasmuntil he suffered a stroke.

He was awarded Life Mem-bership of the Te Awamutu FireBrigade, one of only two peopleto receive this recognition, andsaid that while he had neverbeen on a fire engine he hadfought some battles in Welling-ton on their behalf.

St John was going throughtroubled times in Te Awamutuand he was encouraged toaccept the chairmanship to helpout.

Mr Vaile’s service has con-tinued, albeit at a reduced level. He was involved in establishingthe Te Awamutu Walk of Fameand the induction of our out-standing achievers.

For everything Mr Vaileachieved, he was considered agreat man. He is also considereda good man.

Plans for Secondhand Sunday

TC160513SP05A

CAMBRIDGE residents check out some of the free goods on offer on Secondhand Sunday.

A project to help Cambridgeresidents clean up their proper-ties is being considered for TeAwamutu.

The free SecondhandSunday event was organised bySustainable Cambridge, a notfor profit organisation that iskeen to find different opportun-ities for the community torecycle and generate lesswaste.

Sustainable Cambridgespokesperson Jenny Wilsonsaid that they found Second-hand Sunday alreadyhappening in Australia andNew Zealand and it lookedfairly easy to organise, and hadthe potential to be a fun com-munity wide event.

She says cars, utes andtrailers were out in force forthe first Cambridge Second-hand Sunday which was held atthe end of last month.

The event is a little similarto an inorganic collectionexcept that people are encour-aged to take whatever theywant from people’s piles, andthe ‘givers’ are responsible fortaking what remains back intotheir properties once it is over.

No money changes handssupporting the one man’s junkis another man’s treasure.

Feedback has been reallypositive with people enjoyedseeing their pile of itemsshrink or disappear, and othersfinding some great treasure.

‘‘We were told of thefriendly banter between peopleexchanging information aboutwhat they had found and seen, and people chatting over thefence.

‘‘ The social side of the eventis a really nice outcome and wewere really pleased with thefriendly spirit of the event, andthe number of people who

participated as givers,gatherers or both.

‘ ‘Another SecondhandSunday for Cambridge couldcertainly be in the planning forlater in the year.’’

Mrs Wilson and SustainableCambridge chairman DaveRodger attended the Te Awa-mutu Community Board meet-ing on Tuesday night to offer

support for a similar event inTe Awamutu.

They said the event wasrelatively simple to organiseand promote, and offered toshare their knowledge andresources if a group in TeAwamutu wanted to run Sec-ondhand Sunday on this side ofthe district.

Te Awamutu Community

Board agreed it was worthconsideration and would sup-port the event if the commun-ity wanted it.

The Board would like tohear the public views beforemaking any plans.

CHINESE sky lanterns are cheap and popular, and oftenreported at UFOs.

There were a number of local UFO reports lastweekend, so we referred them to Te Awamutu’s DaveOwen, aka Space Dave.

Mr Owen is president of the HamiltonAstronomical Society. He says always with UFOs it’shard to say exactly what happened, but there are twothings we do know.

Firstly the International Space Station made anunusually bright pass directly overhead on Saturdaynight.

The ISS is often reported as a UFO and this mayexplain Saturday’s sightings, especially as similarreports have come from other parts of the country inits flight path.

Secondly on Sunday night the ISS made anotherpass, but we had the added attraction of a group ofsky lanterns being launched over Te Awamutu. MrOwen says at this stage it seems that all the sightingscan be attributed to these events.

■ If anyone would like to make amore detailed report orlearn more about UFO sightings, you can do so atwww.dave.co.nz/space/ufo

Deb Hinde says illustrat-ing children’s picture booksis a slow process and can bea very solitary occupation.

‘‘But it’s something I’mpassionate about.

‘‘I love that I get to createan alternative world and doall the fun things likedesign the set and cast, develop the characters anddesign their wardrobe.’’

A range of her work iscurrently featured in a win-dow display at Paper Plusin the lead up to a booksigning session for thelaunch of her latestcreation on May 25 (11am).

Ms Hinde says 10 KookyKiwi is a counting bookbased on 10 green bottlesand illustrations from thebook will be on displayduring the signing session.

‘‘10 Kooky Kiwi is the18th children’s book I’veillustrated.

‘‘It includes Maori lyricsby Kotuku and TeOkahurangi Tibble and a

CD featuring Pio Terei.’’While this book is the

latest to hit thebookshelves, Ms Hinde hasalready started new pro-jects.

‘‘I’m currently workingwith Sharon Holt on the TeReo Singalong series ofbooks.

‘‘Sharon publishes twoeditions a year and a newone — Me Haere! — will beavailable from next month.

‘‘I’ve already startedworking on the next one, featuring a Christmastheme, which should bepublished in early Octo-ber.’’

Ms Hinde has been illus-trating children’s picturebooks since 2003.

‘‘Some of her well knownwork includes the popularA Kiwi Night Before Christ-mas and Kyle Mewburn’sfirst children’s book TheHoppleplop.

‘‘While I still illustrateusing traditional methods Ialso work digitally usingPhotoshop.

‘‘I incorporate the handdrawn pencil art into thework to retain the organicfeel you can only get withtraditional methods.

‘‘In saying that I felt theillustrations for 10 KookyKiwi worked better withoutthe addition of the pencilmarks resulting in crisperedges and cleaner, clearerdetail.’’

While the majority of MsHinde’s work consists ofproducing illustrations forpublishing houses and forauthors wishing to self pub-lish, her design skills arealso in demand.

‘‘I provide a graphicdesign service to local andnational small businessesand include logo design, branding, brochures andmarketing material.’’

The Chiefs beat the Western Force 22-21 in Pukekohe on Friday night to remain on top of the New Zealand Conference. The matched marked the return of Ben Afeaki, Tawera Kerr Barlow and Robbie Robinson from injury but Gareth Anscombe, who was expected to start at fi rst fi ve-eighth was revealed to have a broken bone in his foot after an MRI scan on Friday prior to the game.Aaron Cruden resumed his position and took over the kicking duties for the fi rst time this year and slotted six from six.“It was diffi cult conditions; it was a game where we had to kick a lot more than we normally would, because the team who played at the right end got rewarded,” coach Dave Rennie told the Courier.“We were at the wrong end for 20 minutes and got punished.“It was an arm wrestle and you’ve got to

win those tight ones. While we were not at our best, we still got a result and that was important.”Due to a depleting stock of players, the Chiefs have called in for cover, the services of fi rst fi ve-eighth Dan Waenga who has played for Hawkes Bay, Bay of Plenty and is a former Chiefs Development player. The Chiefs now head into fi ve games against New Zealand teams, with the fi rst against the Hurricanes at Westpac Stadium tomorrow night (Friday) before they head back home on Friday, May 24 to play the Crusaders.Three of the tipsters in Our Panel’s Picks, Lance Fielder, Robin McGregor and Jeff Bowers, nailed 5/6 winners in round 13 of the Super XV competition.Fielder continues to lead his rivals a merry chase out in front with a 69% overall success rate, with McGregor second on 65% and Bev McNaughten third on 64%.

Amy wins season finale

YOU GO GIRL: Demolition Derby winner Amy McKinley with her trophy and battered vehicle.

BY COLIN THORSEN

Amy McKinley is the toast ofTe Awamutu’s CountdownFoodmarket this week afterwinning the season finaleDemolition Derby atMcDonald’s Kihikihi Speed-way.

The 27-year-old checkoutoperator supervisor joined onlya handful of female drivers tohave won the derby at Kihikihisince their introduction in the1970s.

It’s not unusual to getfemales entering, but they don’tusually have the mercilessness, aggression and cunning atti-tude required to finish.

McKinley had all of thoseattributes in spades, dishingout as good as she got and more.

It was one of the smallestfields of cars entered for aderby at Kihikihi, butMcKinley (one of only twofemale entrants) certainly hadto have her wits about her.

The 13 cars pounded eachother around for over 15minutes.

It was a win, win scoop forMcKinley.

‘‘It’s all a bit surreal . . .firstly I win the Honda in theSpeedway Club ‘Win A Drive’raffle, then I win the derby, Ican’t believe it,’’ she says.

The crowd gave McKinley astanding ovation as she jumpedfrom the vehicle after beingdeclared the winner.

‘‘I had plenty of support inthe crowd today, including myuncle and aunty who told me ‘ifI didn’t hit a car’ they’d bedisappointed.’’

Selina Machell, the firstfemale driver to ever win aderby at Kihikihi as a 22-year-

old in 2002, was another inter-ested spectator.

‘‘Amy did great, she gave itheaps from go to whoa — it’sanother win for the girls,’’ shetold the Courier.

McKinley felt she had achance of winning when it gotdown to three cars left, despiteonly having fourth gearremaining.

‘‘I had to rev the car heaps, Ihad no reverse . . . nothing.’’

Her only other worry waswhen smoke started cominginto her car.

‘‘I suffer from asthma andwhen my helmet started fillingup with smoke I started to freakout a bit.’’

McKinley is determined toenter again next year to defend

her title provided someone iskind enough to donate her acar.

‘‘I can’t see myself winninganother one in a raffle,’’ shejoked.

Hayley Cresswell enjoyedher time in the derby, makingthe last six in her Nissan Sentrakindly supplied by The CarDump.

Stags prevailin toughMarist clash

Reigning Waikato third division rugbychampions Te Awamutu Sports Stags wona thrilling encounter against Te Awa-mutu Marist 16-10.

Carl Henderson reports it was a matchwhich could have gone either way rightdown to the final whistle.

The Stags attacked Marist’s line for theopening 20 minutes, forcing a number offive metre scrums.

Marist defended gallantly beforebreaking out of their own half andsecuring a penalty which they convertedto lead 3-0 after 25 minutes at CastletonPark on Saturday.

A Marist mistake from the kickoffresulted in Sports’ No. 8 Chris Signalcrashing his way over the tryline andshowing great strength to get the balldown in the tackle.

Sports kicked two further penalties tolead 11-3 at halftime.

Five minutes into the second halfMarist first five Katene Hepi pounced ona loose ball and scooted 40 metres to scorefor an 11-10 scoreline.

Ironically, it was ex Marist playerCody Collins who had the final say —scoring an unconverted try for Sportsafter 27 minutes to set up a tense final 13minutes.

Marist threw everything at the deter-mined opposition. They looked to havescored under the post only to be calledback for an obstruction earlier in themove. Michael Earwaker was Sports’player of the day, while blindside flankerQuentin Heke and centre Ace Masalo alsohad outstanding games.

Marist players to stand out werecaptain Aaron Leppard, prop Stuart Dex-ter (in his blazer game after many yearswith the club) and second five MarkMaxwell. Henderson says both teamsshould be proud of the way the game wasplayed.
