Don’t see red on the roadA
spart of a national roadsafety initiative, motor-ists around the country
are about to encounter dis-tinctive new Police vehiclesafter a trial on Waikato roadsproved successful.District Road Policing
Manager, Inspector MarcusLynam, said as part ofmaintaining its highly visiblepresence on the roads, Policearound the country will betrialling red and orange High-way Patrol vehicles, to berolled out over the next yearas older vehicles become duefor replacement.‘‘In total 28 vehicles will
be rolled out across the 12Police districts over the nextyear, with the first orangevehicle going to Tasman Dis-trict and the first red patrolcar going to Northland.‘‘The next three vehicles
will arrive in the Eastern,Waikato and CanterburyPolice Districts before Christ-mas. This follows the success-ful launch of a red patrol carat last year’s NationalFieldays and its subsequenttrial on Waikato roads whichattracted very positivefeedback from the public andmedia.’’The introduction of the
new vehicles is part of amulti-agency summer road safetycampaign launched today, which also saw the introduc-tion of a two month reducedspeed threshold of 4km/h.Mr Lynam said while most
Kiwis look forward to gettingaway on their summerholidays, far too many nevermake it home, and still moreface a lifetime of debilitating
injury from avoidable crashes.‘‘Summer is a risky season
on our roads, particularly inthe Waikato where werecorded the country’s highestroad toll over the previous twoyears despite a decliningnational trend.‘‘And it’s even more dan-
gerous when you drive toofast, drink too much or takeother unnecessary risks, par-ticularly with thousands ofextra vehicles transiting Wai-kato roads over the summerholidays.’’Mr Lynam said that’s why a
raft of road safety agencies, including Police, ACC, theMinistry of Transport, and theNZ Transport Agency, alongwith our Waikato District andRegional Councils are support-ing this campaign to reducethe human, social andeconomic cost of speedingand other risky behaviour onour roads this summer.’’‘‘Part of this initiative will
include the Police strictlyenforcing a reduced speedthreshold of 4km/h for Decem-ber and January, and we’llhave zero tolerance for thoseflouting the law. This will beaccompanied by a continuedfocus on drink driving, restraints and other unsafebehaviour.‘‘As we saw in the Waikato
with the two most recent longweekends being fatal free, stricter enforcement aroundspeed along with a range ofother safety tactics, can makea real difference in savinglives, preventing injuries, andleaving fewer grieving familiesbehind.’’
● 93 percent of Kiwiswould like police efforts toenforce road safety laws eitherincreased or maintained at thecurrent level.
● 77 percent agree speedenforcement helps to reducefatalities on the roads.
● Drink driving continues
to be over-represented as acause of road trauma.Nationally, during the lastsummer holiday period, 48drivers with excess alcoholwere killed — representing 26percent of all fatalities for theperiod.
● For every 100 alcohol ordrug-impaired drivers or riderskilled in road crashes, 54 oftheir passengers and 27 soberroad users die with them.
● People with a high bloodalcohol level are farmore likelyto be injured or killed in acrash than those who aresober. As your level of bloodalcohol increases, so doesyour risk of being involved incrash.
● National Road Toll forthe last three years — 375;284; 308
● 2013 Waikato Road Toll(as at 26 November) — 18.
● 2012 Waikato Road Toll(as at November 26, 2012) —40.

Malibu making its markBY DEAN TAYLOR
In the all-important mid-sizedsedan market there are plenty ofchoices — and one of them is
the new Holden Malibu.Since the New Zealand launch
of the global GeneralMotorsmodel, sales have been steady.I drove the Holden Malibu CDX
petrol model from RiosetownHolden. While it is the little brother to
the Commodore, it has similar roadpresence and the same feeling ofspace. The 2.4-litre petrol engine (there
is an optional 2.0-litre common railturbo diesel) makes 123kW ofpower and 225Nm of torque —delivered via a six-speed automatictransmission with Active Select.Economy is rated at 8l/100km.It is an attractive looking car
and clearly part of the Holdenstable. The drive is excellent. There are no surprises — great
power delivery and smoothnesswith good handling and brakingwhen needed. This is exactly whatcustomers want.Electronic stability control is
standard, along with six airbagsand there is an automatic releaseelectric park brake system.Malibu CDX models run on
18-inch alloys with 245/45 R18Bridgestone Potenza rubber. All Malibu models are equipped
with a seven-inch colourtouchscreen with the MyLink app-enabled infotainment system alongwith driver assistance technologies
such as reverse camera, rear parkassist and push button start.Steering wheel controls take
care of the impressive nine-speakeraudio system, Bluetooth and cruisecontrol. There is also climate aircontrol, auto headlamps and poweradjustable front seats to name afew of the features. The Malibu has sensor key
technology and push button start.
Extra child safety is providedwith the ISOFIX child seat anchor-age system and extra room ifneeded by the 60/40 folding rearseat to extend the already impress-ive boot space. It has the maximum 5 star
ANCAP safety rating and across theboard offers a serious dollar fordollar challenge to other majorplayers in this segment.
Do homeworkT
he AA condemns the activity of used cardealers selling unwarrantable cars to theircustomers, but says buyers also need to
protect themselves by taking reasonable steps toavoid buying a lemon. The issue was highlighted this week by media
in Christchurch which claimed a consumer boughtan unwarranted car from a registered dealer. Thelaw requires vehicles being sold to have a currentWarrant of Fitness (WoF) less than a month old.AA motoring advice manager Andrew Bayliss
says a WoF is a check to ensure a vehicle meetsminimum safety standards and at least ensuresthat at the time of certifying, those elements aresound.‘‘However, a WoF doesn’t take into account
mechanical soundness or even something basic likea cam belt that needs replacing,’’ Mr Bayliss says.‘‘While responsible sellers want the best for their
customers, consumers need to be alert when lookingto buy a used car and use common sense.‘‘Unfortunately, there are always going to be
some unscrupulous people selling cars who will takeadvantage of those who know little about vehicles orthe process.’’Mr Bayliss says if a car does not have a current
WoF, the consumer should ask why.‘‘Most consumers have the expectation they will
drive away with their newly acquired car and all willbe fine, but it’s illegal to drive a car without a currentWoF.‘‘If you have any doubt, you should never go
throughwith the purchase as unexpected repairs canbe expensive. There is always another car toconsider.’’In a recent survey, the AA asked people who
bought a car within the last six months if they soughtthe opinions of others.‘‘Most people did ask for input into their decision
and nearly half of those surveyed had a professionalmechanic look at the vehicle they were consideringor used a service such as the AA’s PrePurchaseInspection.About 10 percent of those who bought cars
discovered problems after it was looked at bysomeone else.‘‘Buyers should always do their homework and
definitely shop around to ensure they find the mostmechanically sound and safest car they can afford.’’

CLOCKWISE from right — Bentley, BMer,Maserati and Aston Martin on the streets ofFlorence — in contrast to the electric cars atleft.
Continuing from lastmonth’s storyabout motoring in
Italy, I move to Florencewhere Robyn and I sawmore of the high-endEuropean models I wasexpecting — and a largenumber of small electriccars. We also enjoyed a bit
of Florentine humour —even though it is a bitnaughty to tamper withroad signs.
Whoever wasmodifying the signs hadgone to a great deal oftrouble to manufactureand affix stickers thatchanged simple signsinto ‘works of art’.I was quite impressed
with Italian driving skills— although it was hardto work out if there wereany rules.A tour guide told us it
was a matter of mostaggressive wins.

Nissan resurrects SSSbadge for PulsarN
issan has not only revived the Pulsarname in 2013, it’s also delved back to theDatsun days and rebooted the SSS
badge for its top-of-the-range hatchback.DriveBy drove the new
hot hatch at Otorohanga’sJim Wright Nissan.A new 1 .6- l i t re
turbocharged direct injectionpetrol engine delivers aroughly 40 percent powerboost over the 1.8-litre naturally aspiratedPulsar ST hatch and also has an extra 66Nmadded to the torque peak — which decisively isavailable at less than half the revs. The turbo engine enlivens the Pulsar driving
experience while the SSS exterior is dressed upwith 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler andside skirts. The 1618cc direct injection turbocharged
engine — also coming soon in an all-wheel-drive addition to the Juke family — delivers140kW at 5600rpm while peak torque arrivesearly with 240Nm at only 2000rpm.
The power delivery is more about lightthrottle flexibility than free-revving hot-hatchenthusiasm and you might be able to sequen-tially shift the CVT, which you can’t do on STmodels, but it’s still not like the responsivenessof a manual transmission or a modern dualclutch gearbox. On the highway the gearing works well with
the early-peaking torque curve with the enginesettled at 2000rpm in drive at 100km/h andmanual shift ratios which require 2000rpm insixth, 2900rpm in fifth and 3600rpm in fourthat 100km/h.Fuel consumption is rated at 7.8 litres per
100kmExcel lent Cont inenta l
ContiPremiumContact2 radials in 205/50 R17size fitted on the 10-spoke alloy wheels providegood cornering grip and are one of the bestattributes of the SSS while there is a firm rideand moderate road noise at highway speeds.
You sit high in the Pulsar front seats, whichhas a visibility benefit. It’s a roomy hatchback, with plenty of rear
seat headroom, knee room and generousfootwell space while a 60/40 split rear seatbackrest provides a stepped extension to thecargo space.Three tether hooks are provided and the
useful cargo space is achieved while alsoproviding a full-size spare wheel.Pulsar ST-S has 17-inch alloy wheels, leather
steering wheel and shift lever, higher grade
cloth seat trim, rear spoiler, front fog lamps, colour audio display and USB audio input. The SSS adds leather seat trim and door
inserts, dual zone air con-ditioning, intelligent keyaccess, front spoiler and sideskirts, a 5.8-inch screen forthe reversing camera, satel-lite navigation and audiosystem, dusk sensingheadlights and chromeexhaust tip.

Play safe for summer
Asummer driving campaign aims to ensure people travelsafely during the holiday period. Waipa District Council’sroad safety co-ordinator Megan Jolly said the campaign
was aimed at motorists travelling to and from holidaydestinations and would include billboards, media and news.As well asmessages in local towns, there will also be a focus
on speed on rural roads with the beginning of a new billboardcampaign. New Zealand Transport Agency statistics show thatover the last five years within the Waipa district here have been15 deaths and 42 serious injuries resulting from 118 speedrelated injury crashes.‘‘The billboards remind drivers to slow down , to concentrate
and to ‘expect the unexpected’ reflecting the varying conditionsthat exist on rural roads. Rural roads need to be drivendifferently than if driving on a motorway,’’ Ms Jolly said.‘‘There are likely to be many more hazards present such as
roaming stock, slower farm vehicles, ditches and narrow roads.Motorists need to ask themselves if they will be able to stopsafely before an obscured or unexpected hazard.’’Sergeant Warren Shaw reiterated the ‘slow down on rural
roads’ message. He reminded motorists of the summer safepolice campaign with the lowering of the 10km/hr tolerance to4kms/hr.‘‘The road toll is down considerably on last year, let’s keep it
that way ,’’ he said.Ms Jolly suggested a number of things to keep motorists
safe on the roads including:● Having a mechanical check on your car;● Checking your tyre pressures as both over and under inflatedtyres can be dangerous. Further, driving with underinflated tyreswill increase petrol consumption;● Scheduling regular 10minute breaks on journeys ofmore thantwo hours;● Allowing extra time and being flexible in case there are trafficdelays;● Avoiding driving when you would normally be sleeping;●Asmuch as possible stay onwell-lit main roads and highways;● Carrying a cellphone with you (but don’t be tempted to use itwhile driving);● Driving to the conditions, including slowing down on ruralroads;● If you are towing a boat or trailer, pulling over to let otherspast;● Making sure everyone is wearing their seatbelts, even pets;● Having someone else drive if you have been drinking alcohol;● Taking a power nap (10- 20 minutes).‘‘These are simple, common sense things to do that don’t
take a huge amount of effort but they could potentially save livesand that’s what this is about,’’ Ms Jolly said. The campaign will run over the summer months.

THE Burrell 2391 Steam Traction Engine in the 2009 Christmas Float Parade.
Saturday’s Christmas Float parade will bethe last chance to see Colin and LynPinkerton’s Burrell 2391 Steam Traction
Engine under its own steam in Te Awamutu. The engine was restored byMr Pinkerton and
helpers and fired up in 2008 to be part of the IronPark collection.Built in 1901 at Charles Burrell and Sons’
Thelford works in England it was shipped toHawkes Bay where it started its working lifedriving the shearing plant at Olrig Station.During her shipment 2391 was exhibited at
the Melbourne Show. She later went on to road haulage, threshing
grain seed, oats etc around the HeretaungaPlains for 13 years, as well as regular 150kmround trips to Puketitiri carting timber. It was sold to a contractor in 1931 and
continued serving the local agricultural com-munity until 1960.It was then sold and rebuilt by a new owner
in Wanganui, and named Norfolk Pride. It was there the original owner’s great
grandson, Hugh Macdonald, happened bychance to see the engine. He made himself known to the owner and on
weekends was taught him how to operate theengine. When the owner decided to sell Norfolk
Pride, he offered her to the Macdonalds torestore ownership to the original family. The Norfolk Pride Steam Traction Engine
Society was formed, with syndicate membersincluding a number of Mr Macdonald’s fellow TeAwamutu residents. The Pinkertons were shareholders in the
original syndicate and purchased her for their‘museum’.Mr Pinkerton says the decision to sell wasn’t
easy to make, but keeping the Norfolk Pride is adifficult exercise for a private owner. It is going to the Kaikohe Pioneer village
where a team of enthusiasts will be able to lookafter her and keep her running for the public toenjoy.
