Art for its sakeis unappreciated

In response to ChrisGroenestien’s thoughts towhat passes as art, I’m sure themajority would agree totallywith him.

But sadly when we live in ageneration where there is nounderstanding, let aloneappreciation of artistic gifts.

And where there is no lawor rule, of right and wrong orgood and evil, the lack ofboundaries opens the flood

gates to all sorts of rubbish.I think it’s called freedom of

expression which reveals thefrustration of the humanheart.

It’s definitely not a prettysite. I think they also call itprogress what ever that means. . .

To me it’s a tragic decline ofwhat humanity was once cap-able of.

MARIAN CLARKECongratulations tothose artful people

I n M r G r o e n e s t e i n ’ s‘Gyrating in their graves’letter he stumbled on a truthof art that has been aroundsince people were drawing oncave walls — art is not demo-cratic.

That is what is fantasticabout art, there is no elec-tion, no common desire but itis inspired by the ones welove, the things we see, whatwe want and will causea d m i r a t i o n , h a t e a n dquestions by others.

I congratulate anyone whomakes art as it is their inter-pretation of the world, whether or not I agree withit.

Te Awamutu doesn’t oftenhave major conversationsabout art, but we should asit’s important in illustratingwhat the culture of our townreally is.

It is that reason I supportthose in and out of Councilworking towards an Art Pol-icy that will mean in thefuture there is the potentialfor more art in Waipa thatwould be able to cater to allour citizen’s tastes.

That is what art of anyform can do for our commun-ity and I look forward to thenext installation that comesto town.

DAN ARMSTRONG

A Royal PR exerciseWith reference to Dean Tay-

lor’s editorial ‘Royal visit —good news or waste of cash?’ —whilst being a keen supporterof the Royal family, I too agreewith Mr Taylor and questionthe value of their visit and theincurred cost of $50,000 to ourdistrict.

How often does an opportun-ity arise for the average rate-payer to get to see the Royals?

It may only be a once in alifetime opportunity. So why isit that they are visiting sitesthat are generally off limits tomost and have very little rele-vance to our district?

The people of Waipa andagriculture are what makesthis district a very specialplace.

A street parade and theopening of the NationalFieldays (granted the timing isnot appropriate), would havemade more sense and gainedmore sympathy from the gen-eral public.

Sadly, the Royal visit hasonly become a PR exercise forour local authority and politi-cians at the expense of theratepayers (how ironic) and the150 Year celebratory plans.

HAYDEN WOODS

Veto just nastyThe threat of John Key’s

veto to the legitimate pas-sage of the Sue Morroneybill, to extend paid parentalleave, is juvenile politicalnastiness for no otherreason than not allowingLabour a win.

With so many NationalMPs retiring wouldn’t it be a

grand gesture if one or twodid a Mike Minogue,Marilyn Waring or DerekQuigley, and crossed thefloor of the house displayingthe courage of these formernoble MPs.

Walton Street venue gains traction

TC180314SP06A

LIVE at Walton Street: Little Lapin and Eden performing earlier this year.

One of the aims of the WaltonStreet project was for the venueto be Te Awamutu’s home of allthings creative.

A year down the track andthis goal is coming to fruition —especially live, original music.

This Friday three more actswill take the stage at WaltonStreet from 7ish — three pieceharmonies band Oh Mary,Aussie acoustic folkie Jack Cartyand piano, guitar and samplesact Mali Mali.

The latter features BenTolich, member of AvalancheCity, who comes to Te Awamutuoften to see his grandparents Vivand Joe.

By day Walton Street is a caferun by partner Zoe Anderson

and a creative studio of designand film run by partners ChrisLane and Carl Sheridan.

All are passionate about livemusic and for concerts trans-form the space into a 60 seatvenue for ‘musical appreciation’.

Coffee and cake are on themenu, or maybe somethingheartier in winter — but it isabout the music.

The owners also provide theopportunity for art to be hung inthe space — all part of thecreative hub for Te Awamutuethos created by three localpeople who are bringing a newvibe to town.

Mr Sheridan says word ofmouth is spreading and recentlyan acquaintance from Welling-

ton was asking about TeAwamutu’s cool acoustic venue.

The result — another gig.‘‘We are gaining traction in

the music scene,’’ says MrSheridan.

he says the concerts aren’tabout making money, so pricesare reasonable and just covercosts.

‘‘It is about the opportunityfor artistic expression and forpeople to enjoy the experience.

‘‘We get a kick from makingthe event happen and seeinglocal people enjoy themselves.’’

Mental healthstudy focus

People in the workforce who haveexperienced mental health problems, andtheir employers, are the focus of a newstudy on what works in the workplace.

The Mental Health Foundation (MHF)and the University of Otago want to hearfrom people who have had positive experi-ences at work, and have gone through aperiod of being mentally unwell.

Researcher Dr Sarah Gordon will inter-view employees, and their employers, about what has made their experiencespositive and their working relationshipproductive.

The study’s findings will be used todevelop a practical report for the LikeMinds, Like Mine programme, whichworks to reduce the stigma and dis-crimination associated with mental ill-ness and promote social inclusion.

Judi Clements, Chief Executive of theMHF, says research has shown that workhas many positive benefits, ‘‘and we’rekeen to learn through this research thekey factors that help’’.

‘‘The project’s aim is to highlightpositive examples, and uncover useful, practical tips for other employers andemployees.’’

Participation in the study is voluntaryand the employee needs to have been in fullor part-time employment, permanent orcontracted.

People using assisted employmentservices or those working as a peer, consumer advisor, or lived experiencepractitioner, are outside the parameters ofthis project.

Employees who would like to partici-pate need to have regularly or occasionallysought support or treatment from mentalhealth services, such as a GP or districthealth board mental health team, orservices run by non-government organisa-tions.

Community now $7000 saferBY COLIN THORSEN

TC180314DT02

COMMSAFE chairman Richard Hurrellenjoying his round at the fundraisingtournament.

Over $7000 was raised from theannual CommSafe Golf Tournament atTe Awamutu Golf Club.

The funds will assist with the run-ning costs of the Community Patrolsand Neighbourhood Support groups.

CommSafe is committed to makingTe Awamutu and its surrounding areasas safe as possible to live, work andraise a family.

Chairman Richard Hurrell says hisorganisation is grateful to the golftourney’s major sponsor Red Bins, sup-porting sponsors, including CountdownSupermarket and all the players whopatronised the event.

The funds resulted from entry fees, hole sponsorship, raffles and auctionitems. The auction, raising $3000,included 20 litres of Eprinex cattle pour-on and a handyman for 20 hours.

‘‘We’ve still got a couple of items tosell including half a tonne of Gustostock feed,’’ says Mr Hurrell.

Anyone wanting to put in an offer cancontact the CommSafe chairman on 021210 8030.

Fourteen teams of four competed ingood weather and course conditions.

Best gross in the Ambrose tourneywas won by the Youth Education teamwith 62, from Blue Light 63 and deLautours.co 64.

Best nett went to the WoftamWarriors with 53.38, from Waipa Net-works 56.6 and Radar Lunjevich 57.9.

Top three stableford teams wereGyde Wansbone with 50, UBP 49 by lot,CB Green Ltd 49.

Nearest the pin went to G. Bayly, while D. Sattler won the longest drive.

The $10,000 up for grabs for a hole-in-one on the par three 14th, sponsored byde Lautours.co, was not struck.

COMMUNITY PATROLSSadly gone are the days of regularly

seeing the ‘bobby on the beat’ as theNew Zealand Police is challenged with

the growing incidents of serious crimeand accidents.

Here in Te Awamutu, like manyother towns and cities around thecountry, the emergence of CommunityPatrols (or Night Owls as they may becalled in some places) and an increasein the Neighbourhood Support networkhave helped residents feel more securein their own homes.

So what are they and how can you bea part of them.

Currently a dedicated group of volun-teers patrol the streets of Te Awamutu,Kihikihi, Ohaupo and Pirongia mostnights each week. The patrol shifts canvary — anything from two hours earlyin the evening to four hours in the earlymorning. The times and locationsvisited throughout the shift will changedependent upon the patrollers.

The patrols are done in a markedvehicle, kindly donated by Trustpower, and are seen as an important partner ofNew Zealand Police.

The vehicle, fitted with a policeradio, makes the patrollers valuableeyes and ears for the police.

Over the past two years a number ofour local patrollers have been recog-nised by Community Patrols New Zea-land for police results achieved as adirect result of observations andactions.

NEIGHBOURHOOD SUPPORTFor the unfamiliar — this is where

groups of neighbours watch over eachother. If you plan to be away on holiday— let a neighbour know to keep a closerwatch on your property. Groups canvary in size depending upon the proxim-ity of houses.

Neighbourhood Support has grownfrom 46 groups in April 2008 to 180currently covering a total of 1850 pro-perties in both urban and rural areasaround the Te Awamutu area.

If you would like to know more abouteither Community Patrols or Neigh-bourhood Support contact Mr Hurrell.

WILKSBROOKE MAZDA - WAIKATO’S MAZDA FAMILY FOR OVER 30 YEARS

Ifor displays the magic touchSelection sees Australia in his sights

NANCY EL-GAMEL PHOTO

DEDICATED trainer Ifor Jones working out at Jetts Fitness in Te Awamutu.

BY NANCY EL-GAMEL

Te Awamutu’s Ifor Jones has earned aspot on the New Zealand under 15 touchteam to play in Australia.

Ifor was one of three Waikato playerschosen for the squad after their regionalteam won the Mai FM Junior Nationals lastmonth.

His family now faces the challenge ofraising the $3500 needed to send the 14-year-old to Australia for the competition inSeptember.

Ifor’s mum, Donna Jones, cried whenshe heard her son had been picked for theNZ team.

‘‘He did it all on his own and he’s taken itall in his stride,’’ says Mrs Jones.

Ifor and his team-mates were in competi-tion with 320 other players from around thecountry for a spot on the national team.

Waikato under 15s squad manager,Lyndell Brockett, says Ifor makes up for hissmall frame by working hard.

‘‘The boys train three nights a week withus as well as in their own time.

‘‘It’s a huge commitment for both theboys and the parents. They only had 10 daysoff over the Christmas break.’’

Ifor has been playing representativetouch for three years.

He missed out on national selections lastyear, but after persevering he displayed theskill and sportsmanship needed for theteam.

The young teenager puts his successdown to his speed, his team-mates, and thefact that when he’s not playing the sport,he’s practising.

‘‘I like touch, rugby, sevens and league, but I occasionally like to play a bit ofPlayStation.’’

He has been receiving a lot of supportfrom his school friends who have coinedhim ‘The NZ Man’.

‘‘They all shake my hand . . . they are

rapt that I made it.’’His family has been approaching local

businesses in an attempt to find sponsors.‘‘Most of them only support teams, not

individuals, so it’s really hard,’’ says MrsJones.

One sponsor is Sarah Tunicliffe fromJetts Fitness in Te Awamutu, who hasgiven Ifor a free year-long membership andone personal training session a week.

Tunnicliffee will focus on Ifor’s fitness

and strength to make sure he is up for thechallenge.

Ifor has his eyes set on a future inprofessional rugby.

‘‘I want to make the NZ Open men’s fortouch. If I’m lucky, the All Blacks.’’

Ifor’s mum is impressed with her son’sdetermination.

‘‘I ask him every year, ‘do you want to doit again?’. ‘Yep’ he says. I’m really proud ofhim.’’

We love and miss you dearly, Mummy, Daddy, Jasper & Sam.

Our journey is getting better, but it would be so much more if you were on it with us.

Five years ago today, you were taken from our lives. It left us lost and adrift but our enduring love for you has given us the strength to do things we would not have done and to not take life for granted.

In a last attemptto save his strug-gling garage, blue-collar mechanicTobey Marshall(Breaking Bad’sAaron Paul) reluc-tantly partners withwealthy ex-NASCAR driverDino (DominicCooper).

Just as a majorsale to car brokerJulia looks like itwill save the busi-ness, anunsanctioned raceresults in Dino

framing Tobey for man-slaughter.

Two years later and fresh outof prison, Tobey is set onrevenge with plans to take downDino in the high-stakes De Leonrace — the Super Bowl of

underground racing. To get there in time, Tobey

must run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet, dodging copscoast-to-coast and dealing withfallout from a dangerous bountyDino put on his car.

CINEMA SCENE

Wadjda‘ ‘Learning theKoran is hard forme,’’ says our10-year-old heroinedemurely. Herclassmates smirk:finally, the brat whosnuck into ReligiousClub purely to winthe upcoming Korancompetition isadmitting she’s alousy student.

Their smiles fadeas their teacherpraises the girl forher modesty. Every-one, she announces, should try to be likeWadjda. She fails tonotice the glint inher student’s eye.

Everyone should, indeed, try to be likeWadjda: the firstfilm ever directed bya Saudi Arabianwoman, and one ofonly a handful offilms ever shot in thecountry.

Like its small butdetermined titlecharacter, this filmis forceful and

formidable, and allthe more so forinitially seemingrather modest.

Wadjda liveswith her mother in aspacious compound, well walled off fromthe gaze of passingmen. Avoiding themale gaze is vital,Wadjda is con-stantly admonished:cover your hair, cover your face.Don’t laugh aloud ifa man might hear.We — the Western‘‘we’’ — are at firstshielded from thefull emotional

weight of theserestrictions, becauseWadjda wantsnothing to do withthem, and she’syoung enough (just)to get away withbeing strong-willed.What she wants is abike. ‘‘Don’t youknow girls can’tride bikes?’’ the boynext door shouts, riding off into thedistance with hisfriends.

Wadjda knowsnothing of the sort.

The film gains alot of power fromunshowy but effec-

tive use of physicalspace. The streets, vacant lots andindoor spaces we seeare all wide, expans-ive, roomy. Wadjdais a small figure in alarge world. Itmakes intuitivesense that she wantsthis bike. It isn’t aconsumer toy she’safter; it’s a means tomeet the world on itsown terms.

Wadjda’s refusalto be crushed is onlya small rebellion. But it feels precious, fragile, and thrill-ing. NZ Listener
