Uniform pride at Kihikihi

TC070509CT06SPORTING the new Kihikihi School uniform, from left, back row: Andy Morgan (principal), Jenny Wilson (office administrator),Sarah O’Connor (teacher), Miriam Miller (teacher); middle row: Ngaria Newton, Sam Morgan, John Palmhof; front row: MollieWillison, Mitchell Grice, Joshua Grice, Ibanez Turner, Khelli Willison.

Kihikihi School has opted for a compul-sory uniform and although it is beinggradually phased in this year, some childrenare already sporting their new uniformswith pride.

The gold and black uniforms (the same asKihikihi rugby and netball teams wear) aresmart, but also ‘sporty’.

Pupils in uniform spoken to by theCourier certainly had no problems with

their new attire.Comments included: ‘‘You know what to

wear everyday."; ‘‘It looks smart.";‘‘Funky.’’; ‘‘Cool."; ‘‘They don’t look likepyjamas."; "Proud to be at Kihikihi School.";‘‘They stand out."

The compulsory uniform was introducedby the Board of Trustees at the beginning ofthis year, being phased in throughout 2009.

The Board chose to institute a uniform as

most new parents to the school were askingfor one. The uniform consists of jackets, sweatshirts, polo shirt, shorts, skirts andtrackpants and includes a sun hat for thechildren.

The staff also have a voluntary uniformconsisting of polo shirt, sleeveless vest and/or jacket.

The uniform is sold through the schooland is manufactured by Kukri.

BY CATHY ASPLIN

Debbie Donnelly wasstunned to receive aphone call on air to tellher she was the winnerof a $10,000 honeymoon.

‘‘It was very excitingand it took a couple ofdays to sink in that wehad won such an amaz-ing prize.’’

The 22-year-old TeAwamutu office mana-ger was one of the 10finalists in the ‘Win YourDream Honeymoon’competition run by TheEdge radio station, Bride& Groom magazine andMondo Travel.

She was the onlyfinalist from outside ofAuckland, so initiallydidn’t rate her chancestoo highly.

‘‘The competition wasto promote the Bride &Groom Show which wasbeing held in Auckland,so I thought that mightbe an advantage.’’

As a finalist she wasrequired to make a wed-ding dress out of paperand plastic bags, beforemodelling it in personand seeking votes.

With some help fromher friends, her dresswas created using foldedwhite and black plasticrubbish bags. It had apapier mache bodicewhich was laced togetherwith plaited strips ofplastic.

She visited Aucklandto show off her creation, stopped into The Edgeradio station for drinksand nibbles, then wastaken by limo to theViaduct Basin where shesought her first lot ofvotes.

But the following daysof voting saw her friends, family and Te Awamutusupporters come to thefore - providing her witharound 300 votes - 150more than her closestrival.

‘‘It was awesome -thankyou so much toeveryone who supportedme and voted for me.’’

As the winner of thecompetition Debbieheaded to the Bride &Groom Show where shewas given a makeoverbefore modelling her

dress on stage.‘‘Having my hair and

makeup done was a greatexperience, but the cat-walk was a bit scarey.’’

She was also able tohave a look around theshow for ideas for herwedding in February, but certainly didn’t haveto look for honeymoonideas.

Debbie and her fianceGeoff Freeman will beenjoying a dream $10,000

Nadi where they will joina Blue Lagoon cruisearound the Fiji islandsfor four days. They thenhave three nights at theRadisson Fiji Resort onDenerau Island.

‘‘It’s certainly a farmore expensive, exotichoneymoon that wewould have planned -we’re both so excited wewant to go now.’’

However, the couplehave to wait until earlynext year.

They are set to marryon February 27 and willhead to Fiji for theirhoneymoon early inMarch.

And the dress Debbiewill wear?

‘‘It’s going to bestrapless like the one Imade - but its certainlynot going to be made outof rubbish bags!’’

Fired up for fundraisers

TC070509SP19TE AWAMUTU fireman Corey Neilson with Wheel of Fortune’s Greer Robson-Kirk

One of Te Awamutu’s finest setthe Wheel of Fortune spinning onWednesday, April 29 for charity —winning cash for the Child CancerFoundation.

Firefighter Corey Neilson puthis puzzle-solving wits to the testin a week of specials, in whichfiremen from around New Zea-land donated all the money andprizes they won to the ChildCancer Foundation, NationalBurn Centre, and NZ Breast Can-cer Foundation respectively.

And it’s not their first fund-raising effort on behalf of the NZFire Service. The firefighters fea-tured in the shows have eitheralready appeared in the fundrais-

ing Firefighters Calendar (MrNeilson was Mr October in 2009)or will appear in the 2010 calen-dar.

Mr Neilson says the ChildCancer Foundation was a causeparticularly close to his heart.

‘‘Some really good friends havea little girl who’s been throughsome tough times with cancer,’’he says.

‘‘She’s coming out the otherside of it now, but she was prettysick there for a while.’’

Although a run of bad luckduring the game, including twoBankrupts and a Lose A Turn, meant Mr Neilson was only ableto bank $250 for the charity, his

money went towards nearly $3,000raised by the firemen for theChild Cancer Foundation.

And on May 23, Mr Neilsonwill be back on the fundraisingtrail — this time doing the gruel-ling Sky Tower Stair Climb inAuckland. He’ll be one of 10 localfiremen going up the Sky Towerthe hard way — up the stairs, wearing full kit and breathingapparatus weighing in at a hefty23kg — to raise money for theBlood and Leukaemia Foun-dation.

‘‘This is our fifth year runningand over the five years we’veraised $20,000-$25,000 betweenus.’’

Exercise didn’t work for me

“I was out exercising, walking, playing lots of golf andI thought I was eating right too, but nothing seemed to work.I was still putting on weight”“My energy level was very low….I just had no go. On top of that, I would lay awake half the night unable to sleep.I suppose I was stressed out about things and my mind wouldn’t switch off” “When my daughter told me about the new VibrationTraining studio in Te Awamutu I thought I would give it a try.”

My aches and pains disappeared

“I new nothing about Vibration Training, but once I’d hada go, I new…this was for me. For starters it soothed the ache in my shoulder and the pain in my knee and ankle went awayas well. I don’t have a lot of spare time so the 12 minute beginner workout was ideal for me. It was just so easy that I didn’t expect to do this good and I’m quite surprisedactually.” Now I can easily do the hardest workout which is 20 minutes long.”

Food cravings have gone

“I took the “Nutrition for Fat Loss” DVD home and watched it with my husband. It was an eye opener for both of us.Pete looked at me and I looked at him and then he said “We’re noteating right are we?” We decided to follow the advice on the DVD. Pete has lost 7 kg already and is feeling a lot better for it.”

“Food cravings (my biggest curse) have now become thebiggest surprise. For instance, when I ate a piece of chocolate,I would end up eating the whole cake. The bars of chocolateI had stashed up in the cupboard are still sitting there.Since we’ve been eating correctly I haven’t had the urge to eat any chocolate or junk food. It just doesn’t interest meany more and it’s such a relief.”

Wild horses dragged herback into equine world

TC070509GJ02HAPPINESS IS: Kathy Kerr with her two well-loved Kaimanawas, TP (left) and Sunny.

BY GRANT JOHNSTON

It took wild horses to dragKathy Meredith back into theequine world after a break of manyyears — Kaimanawa wild horses tobe exact.

Now the Puahue woman is astaunch supporter of the efforts tosave this unique breed of horse, through her volunteer work withthe Kaimanawa Wild Horse Preser-

vation Society.Applications close soon for

horses out of this year’s muster —contact Mrs Meredith for moredetails at 027 2588 492. She saysthere are about 140 horses beingtaken out in this year’s muster andthey are hoping to find suitableapplicants for about third of them.

‘‘We have to be realistic, wecan’t rehome them all. People needstockyards, horse knowledge and

sufficient amount of land to be ableto provide a new home for aKaimanawa.’’

Mrs Meredith has enjoyed con-siderable show success this seasonwith her Kaimanawas.

She says she is living out herchildhood dreams.

‘‘As I kid rode a farm horse, butalways wanted to go to pony cluband learn to jump.’’

Beauty of Kaimanawasblossoms with care

TC070509GJ04IN SYNCH: Kathy Meredith and her three-year-old Kaimanawa filly TP.

From page 6.Once she was an adult she was

able to follow that dream, but a badexperience put her off horses formany years.

Buying a Kaimanawa horse in2003 got her back in the saddle andshe has not looked back. She hasbeen involved with rehoming eversince and has actually been alongfor the ride on three of the mustersat Waiouru.

‘‘I had done with domestichorses. I wanted a horse that Icould train from scratch myself —one that hadn’t been touched, ortaught bad habits, by someoneelse.’’

The following year Mrs Mere-dith bought her now six-year-oldmare Sunny (Kaimanawa North-ern Sunset) who is one of the

horses from the far north — hergrandchildren have been on Sunnybehind a lead rein.

From the 2006 muster sheobtained her champion three-year-old filly TP (Kaimanawa LittleWarrior).

TP was a wee foal without hermother and had little chance ofsurvival, so Mrs Meredith took herhome.

She let her go to a friend at onestage, but bought her back 18months ago.

This season they have enjoyedtremendous success in the showring — junior champion andsupreme champion at the Cam-bridge A and P Show, junior cham-pion in hand at the Waikato A andP Show, junior champion at theFielding A and P Show, reserve

champion at the All Breeds Showin Hamilton and reserve juniorchampion in hand and reservechampion versatility at theNational Kaimanawa Show inHamilton. TP and her owner alsopicked up the trophy for BestSportsmanship at the NationalShow.

Mrs Meredith says like a num-ber of Kaimanawas, TP started off‘‘pretty scruffy’’ but now ‘‘scrubsup really well’’.

The guy who transported her forme 18 months again saw herrecently and said he could barelybelieve his eyes.

Sunny won ribbons last year buthas not been to the shows this year.

‘‘When I see Kaimanawas againat shows that I have helped rehomeit gives me a huge thrill.’’

Te Awamutu student amongMaunga kaka naming winners

TC070509SP19PRIZE WINNER Te Raika Murray feeds kaka at Maungatautari.

TC070509GJ03TE RAIKA MURRAY

Four lucky people, eachaccompanied by a friend, haveclaimed the chance to spendtime in the kaka aviary afterwinning Maungatautari’s kakanaming competition.

The judges have pickednames for the fourMaungatautari kaka chicksfrom those suggested in thenearly 200 entries.

As the chicks are the first tohatch on the mountain in morethan 50 years the judges liked‘Timata’ suggested by Te RaikaMurray from Te Awamutu.

Timata means the ‘start’ or‘beginning’ — an appropriatename for one of the females.

‘‘It appears that Te Raika isquite the conservationist,

having already visited a num-ber of conservation sitesaround the country — he maybe the latest David Bellamy,’’says Maungatautari EcologicalIsland Trust communicationsconsultant, Julie Milne.

Te Raika, a Year 11 studentat Te Awamutu, was delightedto collect his prize and took hisdad, Perry Murray, along forthe visit. Te Raika said he hadseen kaka at Stewart Island andit was ‘‘choice’’ to see themcloser to home.

The largest of the kaka

chicks, weighing in recently at515 grams, and also a female, has been named ‘Puku’, mean-ing tummy or stomach, asproposed by Blake Seavill fromRoom 3 Karapiro School.

The most flamboyant femaleis being called ‘Flapper’ thanksto the entry from Tessa Winterfrom Putaruru.

The only male amongst thesiblings has been named ‘BillyT’, after the comedian Billy TJames, as suggested by MrsRaewyn Stokes from Tauranga.

The judges felt this was

particularly appropriate askaka are often referred to as theclowns of the forest and are realentertainers. Billy T James alsowent to school at Maunga-tautari.

One of the judges, and kakacarer, Marilyn Mackinder saidpicking the names was a diffi-cult decision but that the fournames chosen really stood out.

She said she was lookingforward to introducing the win-ners to the kaka they havenamed. Te Raika has alreadytaken up that opportunity.

Domestic violence seminar soberingWhile the rest of Te Awamutu

was watching Sex in the City andother wildlife documentaries on acold autumn night, the inspiredamong us went to listen to Dr RuthBusch’s domestic violence update.

I asked some of the KihikihiRotarians to support Altrusa. Weboosted the numbers by 15%, mak-ing a crowd of about 100.

Dr Busch was not to know thatthe average Rotarian was about 70,had been married for the last 50years and suffered from age relatedhearing loss. Unfortunately, themessage did not properly getthrough as without the micro-phone, Dr Busch was too quiet to beheard and it was only used 50% ofthe time.

It wasn’t really the averageRotarian’s cup of tea.

Off the top of my head andwithout notes, the main pointsappeared to be:

• Domestic violence statistics areno better than 15 years ago whenthe law last changed, in fact theyare worse.• The drug problem related tomethamphetamine has made theissues worse.• Domestic violence still exists inall racial groups and the rich andpoor are indulging equally in fre-quency.• Despite being directed by theHigh Court, Family Court Judgesare not properly using the law tominimise domestic violence whenthey are the only ones who can.• The ‘lethality’, frequency of casesresulting in death, is increasing.• There remains a strong undercur-rent of psychological abuse andmessages e.g. ‘‘I can get you when-ever I want’’ below the basicassaults.• Media and sports personalitiesenjoy some form of fantasy island

reality show immunity.• There were no suggestions as tohow to stop domestic violence.Economics, relationship propertyand debt make it virtuallyimpossible to leave a violentrelationship.• Children are still required tomonitor their parents fighting, yetthey are helpless to stop it.• Domestic violence is still passedon to later generations, regardlessof their parents’ behaviour.

One concerned woman asked‘‘What can we do about it?’’, andthere was no simple answer given.

That answer must be the sameone a workmate told me 20 yearsago ‘‘If he hits you once then getout’’.

Nothing was said about thepsychological violence that goeswith having a partner, male orfemale, who cheats on you.

Fed Cup team pipped 2-1Te Awamutu’s Federation Cup

soccer team suffered their fourthloss in five games going down 2-1 toOtumoetai.

Team manager, KenMiezenbeek says it is too early tostart pushing the panic button buta change of fortune would bewelcome after losing a string ofgames by just the odd goal.

Te Awamutu’s only win to datewas a 2-1 defeat of Melville in roundthree of the 12 team, 22 gamecompetition.

Another slow start saw Te Awa-mutu punished at the Stadium onSaturday.Otumoetai had the lion’sshare of possession in the first halfand were gifted their opening goal.

A clearing kick from a TeAwamutu defender hit the back of

mid-fielder Andrew Ryan’s legsand rebounded behind the defence.Otumoetai’s striker pounced, blast-ing the ball past keeper RayMcCabe.

The scoreline became 2-0shortly after halftime when Otu-moetai scored from a throw in.

Te Awamutu then campedinside opposition territory but, despite creating wave after wave ofattacks, could not find the back ofthe net. Jordan Ball and AdamBlake had shots brilliantly savedby the keeper.

Te Awamutu’s solitary goalcame courtesy of a Ball penaltyafter he was illegally pushed in thepenalty area. Ball was namedplayer of the day, pipping AndrewRyan and Lance Smith.

Scouts heading for adventure campFor many Waikato Scouts this

weekend will mark the start of theannual Pio Pio Adventure Camp,a highlight in the Scouting calen-dar.

The camp is held a few minutesout of the Pio Pio village on a localsheep station and is attended byapproximately 150 Scouts and 50leaders every year, of which alarge percentage will be from theTe Awamutu region.

It will start on Friday (May 1)night and will finish on Sundayafternoon.

At the start of the weekend theScouts will be split up into severalgroups and during the weekendthey will rotate around a series of‘bases’ within these groups.

Each base will be running a

different activity such as caving, abseiling, motor biking, shootingand many more.

Many of the Scouts will havenever tried the activities and soeach will be a new experience andoften present a stimulating chal-lenge for them.

During the two hour sessionthat the groups will spend at eachbase, everyone participating willbe pushed to their limits andparticipants will hopefully leavesatisfied that they have gainedmany new skills.

The skills that they will gaininclude learning how to operate amotorbike, a bow and arrow and agun, learning how to abseil, grassski and cave and even learninghow to cope with the rough ride of

the 4-wheel drives and theextreme heights and speeds of theflying fox.

The Pio Pio Adventure Camp islike no other — it has beenrunning for about 30 years andover those 30 years it has beenpraised by all Scouts and leaderswho have attended.

The camp helps people who areunsure of their abilities gain self-confidence and motivation andhave a lot of fun while doing so.

The weekend is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and for thosewho attend will become a fondlifetime memory.

Brace of Brunton bronze

CT070509SP12MADDY BRUNTON, bronze medallist in both the Australian national under19 time trial and road race.

Teenager in world junior selection frameBY COLIN THORSEN

Te Awamutu Sports’cyclist Maddy Brunton isbeing hailed as a pro-digious talent after win-ning two bronze medals atthe Australian nationalunder 19 road champion-ships.

The 18-year-old’s NewZealand team manager/coach Eddie Bright ofBikeNZ says he alwaysknew she was an excep-tional talent. Her third inlast Thursday’s women’stime trial and then thirdagain in Saturday’s roadrace confirmed herundoubted talent.

‘‘Maddy certainly metour expectations. She wasright up to the mark andis in the frame for worldjunior championshipselection in Moscow inAugust.’’

Her time of 25 min 33secs for the 14km timetrial was only 19 secondsslower than that of thewinner AustralianKendelle Hodges.

Brunton says she feltreally good during thetime trial but was stillsurprised how competi-tive her time was.

She rated the road raceas the hardest race of herlife.

It was a four lap courseand the initial break hap-pened on the hill on thefirst lap.

‘‘Five of us broke awayand then the front two gotaway again. The girls Iwas with couldn’t chase,so I time trialed across to

the leaders and wasnearly ill with effort.’’

Brunton and two Aus-tralians finished 3min20secs in front of thechasing bunch with atime of 2hrs 15min 10secs.

It came down to asprint finish, with theAustralians just havingthat little bit more

strength in their legs towin by 20 metres.Brunton was creditedwith the same time as thewinner, three time worldage group track cham-pion, Australian MeganDunn.

Brunton is studying atWaikato University on aHillary Scholarship and

is sponsored by VeloSportin Cambridge.

TC070509CT05BRIAN EDWARDS celebrates winning the North Island MinisprintChampionship.

The Central Metals North IslandMinisprint Title was won in thrill-ing fashion by local club identityBrian Edwards at McDonald’sSpeedway.

Edwards and Huntly driverShaun Cooke went ‘hammer andtong’ on Sunday in what wasdescribed as one of the bestminisprint races seen at the track.

Terry Campbell reports thatCooke seemingly had a lock on thechampionship after passingEdwards at the halfway point but adetermined and gritty drive by hisyoung rival brought him back intocontention and then into firstplace. Huntly driver Dayne Max-well was third.

The Valvoline King CountrySaloon Championship was takenout by Michelle Wymer, whodemonstrated that driving skills, not big muscles, can control thesebig V8 engined machines.

Scott Lansdowne and TonyHeuvel were a close second andthird.

An entertaining three heatseries saw the Kihikihi StreetStock team comprehensively out-point their Stratford rivals toretain an unbeaten run in theannual clash.

Steve de Malmanche, Dave andDaniel Curren, Karl Hart andPatrick Haden were a class abovetheir opponents in experience andstrategy.

The fourth and final decidinground of the Rotorua versus Kihi-kihi Production Saloon TeamsSeries saw Kihikihi take the trophyfor the season with their line-up of5k Vaughn Glidden, 23k RussellHayes, 34k Craig Robinson, 41kJosie Peat and 58k Kevin Grace.

Glidden quickly showed why heis the leading points scorer atKihikihi Speedway this season bycharging to the front in the PeterGlidden Honda sponsored Prelude.

So dominant were Kihikihi thatGlidden had time to slow on the lastlap, allowing Robinson to join himand the two crossed the linetogether, with Hayes hanging on tothird.

Grace was unlucky in the Pitcon

THIS SUNDAY, 12 NOON START6843131AA

Mojo Mama and the Hired Guns, Wellingtonbased Laura Collins and Cindy Muggeridge, willserve up sass and soulful vocals with piano-basedboogie and blues when they head north.

With special guest Bullfrog Rata on guitar andharmonica and ‘packing their hired guns’ GeorgeBarris on bass and Earl Pollard on drums, they willplay the Oparau Community Hall on May 26.

They will blend Cindy Muggeridge’s barrelhousepiano style with the soulful rhythmic grooves ofBullfrog Rata. Manawatu bluesman Bullfrog Rataneeds no introduction really. He’s toured exten-sively with his own band ‘The Undergators’ and inconjunction with other well-known bluesmen.

His brand of earthy, primal blues has been awork in progress, from standing on street corners, busking in towns like Levin and Wairoa, to jauntson jet planes to play in some of London’s packedbars alongside the likes of Midge Marsden, JoshKronfeld and The Exponents.

You’ll find Cindy Muggeridge burning the keysat all hours of the night and day, she’s just ‘in love’with that boogie and blues sound. She’s beeninfluenced by listening to the likes of Otis Span, DrJohn and Ramsey Lewis.

Laura Collins, who likes to rework the classicsfrom Bessie Smith to Ray Charles and current blueswomen like Bonnie Raitt and Koko Taylor, will beup front with her sass and soulful vocal style. “Idon’t think I can wear the title Blues’ Mama but Ilike to give it everything I’ve got!”

There is always an emphasis on good time‘danceability’ and having a laugh with these womenin charge and they have no doubt Bullfrog Rata, aleading man in the NZ blues scene, is going to addhis own brand of fire power to the mix.

You can expect to hear boogie and blues old andnew, borrowed and true blue Mojo Mama originals.

Mojo Mama and the Hired Guns play withBullfrog Rata at Oparau Community Hall, from7.30pm on May 26. Entry is a $10 door charge.
