“An apology was all we ever want-ed,” says Murray Bain.

A carving by ex-Malay veteran ‘Blackie’ Graham will be unveiled to commemorate the occasion and remain on display in the Te Awamutu RSA.

IHC says the funding an-nounced by Government to en-able disabled young people with very high needs to leave school from the age of 16 is a good start, but isn’t enough.

Previously students with very high needs were not eligible for funding for support by adult vo-cational services until they were 21, effectively forcing them to stay at high school.

The paved path along the Pioneer Walkway is wonderful - a great job by the Council.

I use it frequently and enjoy see-ing other residents walking their dogs, with mums and dads and children cycling along it.

Now it has marker posts iden-tifying it from the road, but sadly the signs prohibit cycling. What a shame!

Cyclists and pedestrians happily share the paths around the lake and beside the river in Hamilton, along Mission Bay in Auckland and on numerous other paths

around the world but apparently we cyclists in Te Awamutu are not to be trusted.

Ironically the signs arrived around the same time as Bike Week, when the nation is trying to encourage people to use cycle power.

I would rather my children use the path than battle milk tankers on the road. Instead of advising no cycling, I suggest the signs could advise ‘Cyclists use with care’, which is what we have all been doing so far.

DONNA PALMER

Banning cyclists shameful

It has been brought to my atten-tion that the Otorohanga District Council has engaged a fi rm of con-sultants to make a report on the structural condition of the Kawhia Museum at a cost of $15,000.

I would like to remind the ODC that some time ago extensive re-pairs were completed in this build-ing to remove decayed timbers and decayed windows, also replacing weatherboards after the removal of the then Fire Service building.

This urgent work was carried out by the community to prevent water penetration.

As a building contractor of 55 years experience with timber con-struction, I was requested to make a similar report on this building at no charge to the Otorohanga Dis-trict Council - it appears that this report was just dustbin material.

Regardless of where the $15,000 comes from, I consider that this money could have gone a long way towards repairs to this building, with help from the local communi-ty as has been offered to the ODC at the time.

It therefore makes me wonder if this project is not another Waihar-

akeke Bridge disaster.DON MURTAGH

Otorohanga District Mayor Dale Williams says: “The report by Mr Murtagh that he refers to in his letter was indeed provided and was very helpful at the time, as is the local support of the museum. However, subsequent research identifi ed the very real probability of accessing signifi cant conserva-tion funding for the restoration of the building, and a requirement by the funding application proc-ess is that a professional heritage architect report be commissioned covering all aspects of the build-ing and site restoration, future maintenance etc. Council consid-ered this investment to be reason-able given the cost of the overall repair work to the museum, which may be unaffordable to ratepay-ers without outside funding. Some-times a higher level of assessment information is required to be purchased to enable funding partners to be attracted, and this instance is an example.”

Kawhia Museum report cost unnecessary?

College students beaming after relayTAC Beamers - a team of 22 Te Awamutu Col-

lege students and teacher Matt Synge - took part in the recent Relay for Life in Hamilton.

They raised approximately $1700 for the Can-cer Society through sponsorship for the 20-hour relay and a variety of fundraising events.

Team members sizzled sausages and sold choco-lates (Amy Viggers was selling a box a day at one stage), made Valentines Day cards and sold them with chocolate hearts, staged a Singstar compe-tition over three lunchtimes in the College hall (won by Jessica Shields and Nikita Brown) and sold candle bags (for the candlelighting ceremony at Relay for Life). Laura Sinclair raised $250 by staging a tea party.

Viands Bakery had donation boxers at both shops and Postie Plus donated posters, while Keith Herbert donated a generator for use during the event.

Team members say teacher Matt Synge was an inspirational organiser and motivator.

Team captain Courtney Devlin says: “I really enjoyed being part of the Relay for Life this year. It was so rewarding and amazing to be part of something so special and big. The atmosphere was buzzing for the whole 20 hours with people always at the trackside cheering everyone else on. It was a really worthwhile experience.”

Team members were: Courtney Devlin, Laura Sinclair, Amy Viggers, Ellen Berney, Stacey Sharp, Alyssa-Jane Foster, Nikita Brown, Larissa Richards, Cara Scott-Dickens, Alannah Johnston, Liam Crotty, Brendon O’Byrne, Nicole Oliedam, Cushla Edwards, Stephanie Cooke, Leah Em-mett, Beth Emmett, Jessie Van Kempen, Sara McKee, Chantelle Van de Steeg, Jessie Kingi, Susan Wellington. Midland mental health services agreement welcomedClinicians and mental health

offi cials have welcomed a new model of care for the delivery of forensic mental health services in the Midland region, saying it of-fers huge opportunities for them.

A joint governance group met to sanction and formalise an agreement last month. The group oversees forensic mental care de-velopment in the region.

The group has representatives from Waikato District Health Board, Hauora Waikato - the

largest kaupapa Maori mental health provider in the country - other Midland DHBs and Mason Clinic (Auckland) clinical director Dr Sandy Simpson as independ-ent chairperson.

The group’s task is to ensure Waikato DHB’s provider arm Health Waikato and Hauora Waikato implement the ‘one service two provider’ model of service endorsed by both boards last year.

This model blends best practice

forensic psychiatry with Te Ao Maori (the Maori world) for pa-tients accessing the service. More than 80% cent are Maori.

Service delivery will be from Health Waikato’s Henry Rongo-mau Bennett Centre in Hamilton and Hauora Waikato’s Tamahere Hospital and Healing Centre.

The fi rst task is the appoint-ment of an executive clinical director to work across both organisations. Recruitment has already begun.

Hauora Waikato chief executive Rei Wirihana says there is an air of excitement and anticipation among clinicians and mental health teams to the innovative and creative model of services.

“This will offer the whole Mid-land region some robust relation-ships to work on.”

Lakes DHB chief executive Cathy Cooney, the Midland DHBs’ representative on the group, says the work is pioneer-ing and important in a Treaty of

Waitangi perspective.Health Waikato chief operating

offi cer Jan Adams says the model of care is a signifi cant develop-ment for the region.

“We worked hard to challenge conventional thinking that could have stalled the process,” she says.

“This is groundbreaking work which comes after seven years’ negotiations. We are all very excited about the challenges ahead.”

Dairy drive paying off

Dairy farmers who need staff for the com-ing season are being encouraged to do so now by their industry good organisation, DairyNZ.

DairyNZ chief ex-ecutive, Dr Tim Mackle, says that half way through the Go Dairy campaign there are now at least 250 people from around the coun-try who are actively looking for jobs on dairy farms.

“We expect that number to go beyond 1,000 people by the time the campaign ends this week,” he says.

Thirty Go Dairy re-spondents have already found a job on a dairy farm.

Dr Mackle says that while the total number of calls to date is slightly ahead of last year, the number of calls which are genuine inquiries is up by 20% over last year.

After three weeks the call centre had received 1,635 calls which quali-fi ed as genuine inquir-ies.

Dr Mackle says that the Go Dairy campaign, which is now in its fourth year, is aimed at attracting people who are currently employed and are considering changing their careers.

“We are looking for people who have gained some skills in the workplace and have a degree of maturity,” he says.

St Patrick’s mathletes in fi ghting fi t form

MATHLETES (from right) Monique Veitch, Logan Walsh and Navaar Atutahi online with four million other students for World Maths Day. 078084AD

World Maths Day was cel-ebrated by millions of students all around the globe - including senior St Patrick’s School pupils from Room 11 .

In fact they would have been amongst the fi rst students to start World Maths Day activities.

A large part of the class mathe-matics is based around the online Mathletics programme.

The students learnt about this system when they took part in World Maths Day 2007 and won a free two week trial.

Class teacher Alison Murphy

says it is a great tool for the mathematics programme and she convinced the school to pay for it for her class for 2008.

She says the programme has lots of benefi ts - one being how motivational it is for the stu-dents.

On World Maths Day her class was online with four million other students worldwide, taking part in various real-time activities.

Most popular are the fact quiz-zes where students pit them-selves in speed tests against others around the world. The Te

Awamutu students regularly hold their own in the quizzes.

Mrs Murphy says the tool also allows her to pre and post test any mathematical topic and plan accordingly.

She can then use Mathletics to help create a programme, with extra activities available online from school or home.

Parents can also go online to monitor their child and the online help function teaches the students (and Mum and Dad) the correct way to solve the math-ematical problems of the day.

Easter art exhibition By Cathy Asplin

Kawhia artist Robyn Ninnes is staging a special exhibition for Easter.

‘Art at the Villa’ will be staged at 75a Retemeyer Street, Kawhia from Saturday March 22 to Monday March 24 (10.30 am. til 3pm daily).

Mrs Ninnes is a full time art-ist based in Kawhia and her current works are on stretched canvas, canvas on board and primed board.

“I have used acrylic paints, and in some cases texture, me-tallics and gloss gel, to achieve various effects.

“While I mainly paint land-scapes and seascapes, I am offering some abstract and still life pieces as well. Some works (such as the one pictured right) have local fl avour.”

An award winning painting, which won the Putaruru Water Festival, will also be on show.

“While the villa is a private home, as a venue it offers the opportunity to maximise the relationship between decor and art. I am very interested in how they can enhance each other.”

There is no entry fee for the exhibition and all work will be for sale.

For further details contact Mrs Ninnes (ph 871 0069). ‘FLAX BEFORE KAWHIA HARBOUR’

NGUTUNUI resident Marion Lewin voted Mt Pirongia as her favourite Waikato ‘wonder’. 078086AD

A Waikato University water quality expert has slammed the environmental progress report for the Clean Streams Accord as ‘self-congratula-tory’.

Professor David Hamilton, a chair of Lakes Management at the University of Waikato says the levels of deforestation and water abstraction in dairy conversions, as well as intensifi cation of the industry, are having a severe impact on wa-terways throughout New Zealand.

That has left a legacy of pollution and envi-ronmental degradation for future generations to pick up, and resulting in rapid deforestation.

“The levels of intensifi cation of dairy, through increased numbers of cows per hectare and use of water and fertilisers are placing severe demands on New Zealand’s natural resources, some of which were being used unsustainably.”

The recently-released fourth progress report on the Dairying and Clean Streams Accord showed steady progress was being made towards the ac-cord’s targets in most areas, but some farmers were letting the side down.

The accord is an agreement between the Minis-try of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry for the Environment, Fonterra Co-operative Group and Local Government New Zealand. Signed in May 2003, it aims to achieve clean, healthy water in dairying areas. It covers streams, rivers, lakes, groundwater and wetlands.

Professor Hamilton says there has been a lack of leadership and information provided to farmers in environmental management by the industry.

He says the ‘put up a fence’ attitude hides un-derlying considerations required for the size and management of riparian buffers, as well as the non-point source pollution.

“In most cases it is nothing more than window dressing and there has been minimal progress since the Clean Streams Accord.”

Professor Hamilton believes most New Zea-landers would be willing to accept dairy prices that were infl ated if they knew that a good por-tion was being used to address the industry’s environmental problems.

“Instead, regional councils, who are dealing with multiple environmental problems relating to air, water and land, have the burden of under-taking prosecutions in an industry where around 15% to 30% of farmers are not complying with simple measures for surface water discharge of effl uent.”

Academic slams waterway report

By Cathy AsplinNgutunui resident

Marion Lewin has had a magic view of Mount Pirongia from her front gate for the past 45 years - but by win-ning an Environment Waikato competition she will soon have a new view of it - from the air.

Mrs Lewin was named the winner of the ‘One Waikato - Seven Wonders’ com-petition which invited people to nominate their favourite spot in the Waikato and go into the draw for a free sce-nic fl ight over the area.

“Pirongia mountain is a special place for me - I see it as the spiritual ‘powerstation’ of the Waikato.

“It dominates my life and from the top you can see across

the Waikato, which includes the ‘sub-sta-tions’ like Kakepuku and Maungatautari.

“I think about the Patupaiarehe, the fairy folk, believed to have once lived there.

“Perhaps refugees from conquered Maori tribes also lived there once.

“Now a group of people who love the mountain are ridding it of rodents, so trees will fl ourish and birds will come back in abun-dance.”

Mrs Lewin supports the work of the Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu trust by sponsoring a hectare on the mountain.

“They do wonderful work and I’m happy to help, so that others can also enjoy the moun-tain.”

She was delighted to win the scenic fl ight for her efforts and plans to take her son from Wel-lington with her.

While Pirongia Mountain wasn’t voted the number one attrac-tion it does feature as one of the ‘Seven Won-ders’.

WAIKATO RIVERTOP WONDER

The ‘spine’ of our area - the Waikato River - has been voted number one wonder, just edging out Mt Maungatautari to win Environment Waikato’s ‘One Waikato, Seven Wonders’ competition.

EW chairman Peter Buckley says the close-ness of the voting for the top spot, and the fact that 129 places

were nominated, shows Waikato people hold many different places dear to their hearts.

But the Waikato River emerged as the top spot through the 276 nominations made from more than 1300 specifi c visits to the Seven Wonders website and entry forms posted in from the council’s Envirocare magazine.

“The fact that the river won probably refl ects what a domi-nant feature of our landscape it is,” says Cr Buckley.

Some of the com-ments made by people voting for the Waikato River included:

“The river is a single thread which links many of the unique fea-tures and landscapes of the region.”

“The tranquil walk-ways along the river are a pleasure for mind and body.”

Mt Maungatautari was second, then came Raglan, Waitomo Caves, Mt Pirongia, Karangahake and Lake Taupo.

Places on the Coro-mandel Peninsula collectively gained the second highest number of votes, but with the votes split between dif-ferent spots, no single one of them made it into the top seven.

“I’d like to thank the public for taking the time to let us know their special places. They shared some great stories of why these places hold spe-cial meaning for them.”

Hey Micky - you’re so fi ne

IRISH musician Micky Martin managed to fi t a trip to the 2008 Te Awamutu Lions Food and Wine Festival during this year’s three week tour to New Zealand. His fi ve-piece band, Lookaway Dixieland, mixed traditional Irish music with Irish versions of Elvis tunes during their two-hour set. Martin was so pleased the good people of Te Awamutu had ‘brought their dancin’ shoes’ he even engaged in a bit of crowd surfi ng to celebrate. The festival was just one of the big, successful events held here over the weekend. See Thursday’s Courier for more coverage. 078087AD

Internet savvy Waipa District Library patrons will be delighted to learn that the library catalogue is now online.

Library members will now be able to search the library’s catalogue, access their library records, renew items on loan and reserve library items all via the internet.

They will also be able to see other features such as best seller and new book lists, recommended reading and links to useful websites.

Waipa District Council libraries manager Alison Gordon is delighted with the fl exibility of the new sys-tem, and how it will enhance cur-rent services.

“All our current services will con-tinue as normal, but we are always

striving to improve and extend the range of resources and services on offer, and the internet is a really popular medium that we wanted to link into.”

As well as library staff being available to answer queries, there are also a range of help options available.

“We will be holding free tutorials at both libraries on a Tuesday and Thursday, 11am - 11.30am or by appointment until the end of April, and there are also ‘how to’ brochures and online assistance,” Ms Gordon says.

The online catalogue can be found at www.waipadc.govt.nz or at your local library in Te Awamutu or Cam-bridge.

It’s that time of the year for crea-tive kids wanting to get their images sent across the country and around the world on stamps this Christmas says New Zealand Post.

The New Zealand Post ‘Design a Stamp’ competition is now open for entry to school students aged 5 to 12 years.

The works from three lucky win-ners will grace the 50c, $2.00 and $2.50 stamp - all of which can be used to post mail overseas at Christ-mas.

These stamps will complement a range of traditional Christmas stamp designs.

This is the third year New Zealand Post has run the competition. This year the three lucky category win-ners will receive $1,000 plus $3,000 will go to the school they attend.

The winning students will also get

to make a guest appearance on the kids’ show ‘What Now’ while a new $1,000 New Zealand’s Most Crea-tive School award will recognise the school with the most entries relative to the size of the school.

New Zealand Post stamps gen-eral manager Ivor Masters says the theme for the competition this year is a Kiwi Christmas.

“We are asking children to really let their imagination run wild, but at the same time to think about what might look good on a stamp.

“Because stamps are small, chil-dren need to keep their designs sim-ple and use bright, strong colours.”

Entry forms and tips on what makes a good stamp image can be downloaded from www.nzpost.co.nz/designastamp. Entries close on May 9 and the stamps will be available for sale from October 3.

Te Awamutu Bridge Club’s oldest member Girlie Quin has been enjoying a number of successes lately, which were highlighted in last week’s play.

On Wednesday night the summing up of one hand led her to open straight off seven hearts in-dicating she thought she could take 12 tricks out of a possi-ble 13 and then went on to do just that.

In Friday’s play a similar hand came up in spades and once again Mrs Quin opened seven and again went on to achieve just that. No other player on either days play attempted her opening bids and all felt they had been given a lesson by a seasoned veteran of the game.

Schools’ 40km speed zone trial positive

A trial speed reduction programme reducing the speed limit outside Hamilton schools appears to have the support of drivers.

Last month Hamilton was the fi rst city in the country to introduce a by-law requiring motorists to slow down to 40km/h in specifi c zones around schools.

Sergeant Phil Ruddell of the Ham-ilton Strategic Traffi c Unit says over the fi rst two weeks 45 infringement notices were issued for speeding in the variable speed zone.

“Obviously we would’ve been hap-pier if we hadn’t had to issue any tickets but generally we’re pretty happy with what we’ve observed. The highest speed encountered was a woman driving at 65km/h, that speed wouldn’t be acceptable under the old speed limit let alone outside a school.

“Most drivers are abiding by the speed limit and showing due care around schools which we are very pleased with.”

Pinny stepping upLast year’s under-21 lock Logan Pinny looks set

to make his Waikato premier club rugby debut for Te Awamutu Sports at Hinuera on Saturday.

Coaches Kerry Eynon and player/coach Joe Ed-wards have been impressed by the pre-season form and attitude of the young up-and-comer.

“Logan’s a young fellow who has put his hand up and said I want to be part of this premier team,” says Eynon.

“With last year’s locks Heath Barclay offi cially re-tired, Brett Robb now in Auckland and Wheels (Paul Wheeler) having minor surgery, he’s stepped up and said you must pick me.”

Eynon says the loss of Barclay, who played over 100 games for Sports, is huge - “His replacement has big shoes to fi ll but you can see Pinny wants to be there.”

Another exciting new face in the pack is young fl anker Carl Finlay - a New Zealand age group row-ing representative and rugby product of Hamilton Boys High School.

“Carl’s a big asset, he’s going to keep everyone honest with his ‘give it everything’ attitude,” says Eynon.

“He comes off the fi eld all cuts and bruises but still smiling.”

Finlay has won all the team’s fi tness drills. He is streets ahead of everyone else.

“For a newcomer, he’s laid down a bit of a chal-lenge to the other boys,” says the coach.

The pack has been further beefed up by the return of back rower Mitai Tuuta and prop Mark Kahura, while a few of the under-21’s, involved in the Car Dump Company sponsored Te Awamutu Sports Rugby Academy, have put their hands up at pre-season training.

New faces vying for places in the backs include former Bay of Plenty age group halfback Grant Ed-wards, midfi elder Glen Kevey, ex Pirongia fi ve eighth Justin Thompson and Andrew Powell, last year’s Te Awamutu College 1st XV fi rst fi ve.

Chairman Ian Davison says the club is fortunate to have coaches with such a wealth of experience as Eynon and Joe Edwards, who played over 80 games for Bay of Plenty and spent the last two seasons coaching in Edinburgh.

“They both have excellent man management skills, encouraging the players to buy into their team culture.”

The club is still looking for more under-85kg, un-der-21 and under-19 players.

There have been a lot of positive changes at Te Awamutu Marist heading into the Waikato second division rugby competition

Richard Gibbons-Goodhew has taken over as president of the resurgent club, with an increasing player base for both junior and senior teams.

Gibbons-Goodhew will be one of the few, if not the only president in the Waikato still playing.

He is turning out at loose head prop for the seniors this season.

New senior coach Shane Crutchley has the luxury of 30-plus players attending training sessions on a regular basis.

Crutchley was coach of the all-conquering Marist 13th grade side last season.

He has easily made the transi-tion from junior ranks, injecting the same enthusiasm into the club’s top side.

The senior team, captained by halfback Darren Marsom, has a good blend of youth and experi-ence.

Marsom sees the forward pack as the key to a successful season.

The tight fi ve has been strengthened by the return of hooker Adam Bain, following shoulder reconstruction, and prop Mark Cotes, who has been off the scene for four years.

Marist have six loose forwards in the squad, including the pacey Kerry Davis, Jason Rowe and David Ray.

Mid-fi eld back Dion Pryor has returned to Marist after giving premier grade a crack with Te Awamutu Sports in 2007.

Noel Watson, straight out of College rugby, is a new face on the wing. He will give the side serious pace on the fl ank.

Marist will be encouraged by their form at Pirongia’s pre-sea-son tournament last Saturday. The second division side extend-ed last year’s fi rst division semi-fi -nalists Raglan to 7-0 and beat fi rst division team Ohaupo 19-0.

Anyone interested in play-ing junior or senior rugby for Te Awamutu Marist can contact Ri-chard Gibbons-Goodhew on 021 404 764.

Marist in good shape

BAIN BURST: Marist hooker Adam Bain takes on the Ohaupo defence at Pirongia on Saturday.

Challenge for OhaupoA healthy mix of new and old

faces is promoting a good Ohaupo team environment and spirit.

The Waikato fi rst division side has welcomed the return of blindside fl anker Gary Carruthers after two seasons in the wilderness. He will captain the side.

Also returning to the fray is 48 years young Richard Hall, who is reportedly still showing some of the young squad members the way forward.

Ohaupo will need to show sharp improvement over the next fortnight after struggling in the pre-season tournament at Pirongia on Satur-day.

Otherwise they are going to fi nd life tough in the fi rst division.

They kick off the season on March 29 with a home game against former top division power Putaruru.

The A team is coached by Allan Rayner, with Dave Kite taking the Bs.

Adding to what should be a posi-tive vibe for Ohaupo, will be the re-turn of two netball teams to the club this season, along with six junior rugby teams.

Mountain Men skilled upThe 2008 season is promis-

ing to be another good one for Pirongia, reports club stalwart Layne Kerr.

Senior coach Chris Gibson is determined to win some silver-ware after experiencing the dis-appointment of losing last year’s Mooloo Shield fi nal.

He and his coaching assistant Ford Demler are both very enthu-siastic about the season, having just been on a three-day coach-ing course.

“We learnt a massive amount, and it was great to talk to fellow coaches - I can’t wait to put some of the new ideas into practice,” says Gibson.

“We have a backline stacked with ability and I want to really set them loose this season.”

There have been a couple of player losses.

Young backline utility Justin Thompson has switched his al-legiance to Te Awamutu Sports, but his departure is offset by the return of the dynamic Richie Con-nor and Aaron Van der Poel.

Gibson says there is an open-ing for a tight head prop to put his hand up for the A spot.

Last year’s starter, Grant Fra-ser, is off overseas to take up a contract, and veteran Neil Find-sen wants to ease back on his playing minutes.

Alan Walter and Kane Mason will once again be in charge of the Senior B team.

Coach Walter is fi red up to bounce back and win some sil-verware this season after their fi nal loss last season.

He is excited to have a few young contenders vying for plac-es in his backline, and hopes his experienced pack will once again set a platform for the expansive style his B’s play so well.

Kelvin Bell returns for another year coaching the Under 19’s after winning their section of the age group competition last year.

Bell will be assisted by Michael Earwaker and manager Grant Newton.

Bell, Earwaker and Newton also attended the three-day coaching

course and are brim full of ideas to develop their team further this season.

Bell has been thrilled with 20 plus players regularly turning up at training.

President Te Oti Kaihe says the club is thriving and humming

along at present. The season got off to a fl y-

ing start with the Mountain Men hosting the fi rst pre-season Grassroots tournament involving Pirongia, Raglan, Melville, Te Awamutu Marist and Ohaupo on Saturday.

PIRONGIA play-maker Paul Taylor frees his arms in a Raglan tackle during the Grassroots pre-season tournament.

Children - the charity helping children under 15 needing life chang-ing surgery.

After a meal a very informative talk en-titled Alexandra to Pirongia was given by Alan Hall, a local his-torian. It covered the

Waipa area from the 1860s through to the present day.

He showed maps of the area ‘ then and now’, illustrating what an important part the Waipa River played in getting supplies to the area. The railway going

through Te Awamutu enabled goods to come to that area and the major town was estab-lished there.

Rotarian Peter Rob-ertson then spoke on behalf of the Forest Park Lodge Commit-tee.

CUP JOY: Kihikihi’s triumphant polo team with family and friends after winning the Savile Cup in Rangitikei. Photo supplied.

A special parade up Alexandra Street tomorrow at 1pm is be-ing organised to acknowledge Kihikihi winning polo’s national Savile Cup club championship.

Kihikihi beat the hosts Ran-gitikei 14-7 in the fi nal, having

led 7-3 at halftime. It was the ninth time Kihikihi

have won the Savile Cup - New Zealand’s oldest sports team trophy - since it was fi rst played for in 1890.

The champion team of 2008

comprised of Andrew Parrott, Robert Watson, Barrat Watson and Hamish Ormond.

Parrott was the only survivor of the last Kihikihi team to savour Savile Cup success in 1991.

Kihikihi can now boast nine national club titles

Pirongia rookie bowler proving fast learnerThe youngest member of Pirongia Bowling

Club Jake Leslie has wasted little time tasting championship success.

Leslie won all his four matches against highly rated senior members to clinch the handicap sin-gles title.

Leslie picked up a second title playing lead for Marlene Lane in the handicap pairs.

After four games, four pairs had three wins.In a play off of three ends, Lane and Leslie beat

Neville Northcott and Nevinka Drnasin.Semi-fi nal results saw Northcott beat Dawn

Te Awamutu BMX Club will fi eld a strong contingent of riders at the national champi-onships in Christchurch over Easter Weekend despite being without Cody Hobbs.

The former New Zealand Mighty 11s captain is the only one of Te Awamutu’s six na-tional champions from North Harbour 2007 not defending their titles.

Hobbs broke his collar bone at Tauranga three weeks ago.

Injury has also prevented Courtney Brunton from compet-ing in the South Island.

She has a compound fracture of her left arm as a result of a crash during practice at the Hamilton track last month.

All the riders have been rac-ing at meetings throughout the North Island over the season to qualify for the nationals, as well as attending club nights at most tracks in the Waikato region to polish their skills.

Club spokesperson, Dean Millar says a term used on the electronic start gate states ‘Rid-ers Ready’ and he believes the following Te Awamutu riders

are ready for Christchurch - LJ Campbell, Andrew Clark, Finlay Ebbett, Carlin Leong, David Lewis, Connor Loomans, Patrick McKee, Clay Merito, Cooper Merito, Ronan Millar, Haegan Nicholson, Vishal Patel, Tho-mas Peck, Rebecca Petch, Kyle Rogers, Hayley Smith, Joshua Smith and Jessica Sterling.

A number of these riders will be racing in two classes at Easter - 20 inch as well as the 24 inch cruiser classes.

“The team has a lot of poten-tial. We’re hoping to match or

better last year’s six NZ1 titles,” says Millar on the eve of their departure for the South Island.

Codi Merito is also trialling for the Mighty 11s team, along with Chester Ebbett, Caleb Loomans Taniora Ngatai and Harry McConnell.

The New Zealand Mighty 11s team take on their Australian counterparts later in the year.

The nationals start on Friday with the Mighty 11s team selec-tion, followed by the national championships on Saturday and Sunday.

Out of exile, April 2008 marks the much anticipated return to New Zealand shores of Matchbox Twenty!

Te Awamutu Courier and CDs4nix (former-ly Tracs) give readers the chance to celebrate the live show in Auckland’s Vector Arena on Tuesday, April 8 by winning the newest CD ‘Exile On Mainstream’.

Joining Matchbox Twenty is Thirsty Merc.Striking massive success with the release

of their fi rst hot new tracks in fi ve years, pop-rockers Matchbox Twenty’s ‘Exile On Mainstream’ hit the shops and immediately thereafter the top of the ARIA Album Chart, debuting at Number 1.

With sales already approaching platinum status, the album features six brand new tracks, including the Top Ten single ‘How Far We’ve Come’, plus a 2nd disc of 11 greatest hits.

The title of Matchbox Twenty’s best-of col-lection, ‘Exile On Mainstreet’, seems to be an acknowledgement, ironic or not, of the band’s entrenched status as kings of commercial pop-rock.

As the 11 mega-hits compiled here prove, though, the band has a right to be proud.

The disc plays like a trip down the main drag of radio-friendly alt rock in the 1990s, with such ubiquitous classics as ‘Long Day’, ‘Push,’ ‘3 a.m.’, and ‘Real World’ included.

But the real treat is the EP that comes with the package.

These six songs represent the fi rst new Matchbox Twenty material since 2002 and fi nd the band more energized, focused, and compelling than at any point in their career.

The ‘Exile EP’ is a polished stream of well-constructed modern rock with an adult con-temporary slant, matching the highlights on the best-of disc for catchy hooks and melodic songcraft.

Taken together, the discs offer a perfect summation of the band’s past and present glories.

The ideal precursor to what is certain to be a ripper of a show! Tickets from Ticket-master

To be in to win simply put your name, ad-dress and daytime contact number on the back of a standard sized envelope, address it to the ‘Matchbox Twenty CD Competition’ and make sure it reaches our offi ce by 5pm next Tuesday.

Te Awamutu Courier and CDs4nix (for-merly Tracs) give readers the chance to win a double pass to catch Korn live at Auckland’s Vector Arena on Thursday, April 24.

Support is Biohazard and Chimaira. In their 14 years of togetherness, these LA

based Californian heavy hitters lineup has both survived and thrived, and the songs on the untitled record are rife with detritus of deca-dence and les-s o n s

learned. That fervour and authenticity is felt

and appreciated by both fans and peers, Korn’s groundbreaking sound spawned a plethora of imitators and has them credited as founding the Nu metal genre.

But the fans know where it began, and show their loyalty. Fans who started out as kids are now bringing their kids to Korn shows; and Korn will not disappoint.

On the Family Values Tour the band serves

up its biggest stage show ever, and in the set list are songs they haven’t performed in 10 years.

They want the world to know that although they are down to three members they are still very creative and still

love making music. This is their

eighth studio al-bum, and with top tracks such as ‘Ev-olution’ and ‘Hold

On’, it rates up there with their earlier releases which have spawned such memorables as ‘Falling

Away’, ‘Some-body Some-one’, ‘Word Up’, ‘Twisted Trans i s tor ’ and ‘Another Brick In The Wall’.

Of their 11 releases in total, eight have sold plati-

num or platinum-plus so they must be doing something right.

And you can fi nd out what it is by picking up a copy and rocking up to their show. Tick-ets from Ticketmaster.

To be in to win simply put your name, ad-dress and daytime contact number on the back of a standard sized envelope, address it to the ‘Korn Double Pass Competition’ and make sure it reaches our offi ce by 5pm next Tuesday.

Win Korn double pass
