A contingent of Te Awamutu Rotarians, Waipa District Council representatives and partners fl ew to Brisbane today and are now bussing their way to Moree.
The 22-strong twin town tour group includes Te Awamutu RSA president David Haber-fi eld, who is driving the bus, and former Moree resident Gaynor Krippner.
Mrs Krippner settled in Te Awamutu with local, Peter Krippner after they met and married following a previous twin town tour.
The tour follows a visit by Gaidyn Flay, during his time as a Waipa District councillor, to gauge interest in rekindling the once strong links between Te Awamutu and its Australian twin town.
The tour includes a visit to a cotton gin, pecan farm and an opal mine, as well as a civic reception in Moree.

Wahine survivor recalls tragedy It is 40 years today that the interisland ferry Wahine went down in Wellington harbour after hitting Barrett’s Reef. It remains one of New Zealand’s worst maritime disasters - 51 people died, most of them drowning off the coast of Eastbourne and Pencarrow. But it is also a story of survival - 683 passengers and crew made it ashore, thanks largely to the many selfl ess people who braved the stormy seas to bring them ashore. One of those survivors was Margaret Alexander of Te Awamutu.

SURVIVOR Margaret Alexander today with a much treasured copy of ‘The Wahine Disaster’ and (below) with son Brett in 1968.
By Cathy AsplinIt may be 40 years since the
Wahine went down, but for Margaret Alexander memories of that fateful day still send a shiver down her spine and bring a tear to her eye.
“To be honest I think I’m more affected by it now than I was then.
“It’s looking back you realise the enormity of it all and how it could have ended tragically for our family.
“We were certainly some of the lucky ones.”
Margaret and her two chil-dren Storm (3½) and Brett (18 months) - from Carterton at the time - weren’t even supposed to be on the Wahine’s disastrous last crossing.
They had earlier been in Christchurch to attend the funeral of the children’s great-grandmother, but decided to stay on with friends, as hus-band Dane was heading to Hawera as part of his horse training business.
“It didn’t seem to be an issue at the time. I couldn’t really let Dane know what I was doing, as there wasn’t the ability to communicate like today.
“He headed to the Hawera races unaware that we were go-
ing to catch the April 9 evening ferry at Lyttelton.
“We took a cheap option, so we were on one of the lower decks on board. There were two bunks, one for Storm and one for me, while Brett was in a cradle on the fl oor.”
The family had no idea that Cyclone Giselle was gathering strength as it approached New Zealand, but its effects were soon felt.
ROUGH NIGHT“It was a very rough night
and I was very seasick. They thought the crossing would be a bit rough, but it was a new boat and I just thought we would be OK.
“I had a dreadful night and in the early hours of the morning I heard this enormous CRASH - I thought gosh, that sounds a bit strange.”
Soon after there was a tap on door and a stewardess poked her head in to say ‘get lifejack-ets on, we’ve hit Barrett’s reef!’
The lifejackets were large and bulky on Margaret, so they were huge on Storm.
“I was just in my nightie and dressing gown. Brett was in a nappy and a jersey and I got Storm dressed.
“We weren’t supposed to
take anything with us - so we left the cabin and joined the queues heading up to the top deck.
“I actually had to sit down every time the queue stopped moving as I felt so sick.”
It was in that queue that she met Robert Crawford, a fi fth year law student who was captain of Lincoln cricket team that was heading to a tourna-ment at Palmerston North.
“He said he would stay with us and help, as he could see I had two very young children with me and no-one else to help. Not many young guys would do that today.”
When they arrived at the top deck, they were sent to a side cabin on the same level.
“Robert stayed with us - he even changed Brett’s nappy at one stage - using a pillowcase as there was nothing else.
“He reassured me that eve-rything would be alright and said if they had to leave the boat he would take Storm, so I could take Brett.
“I didn’t realise what a list the boat was on, until Storm kept sliding under the bunk.
“The kids had nothing to eat, nothing to play with, but they didn’t make a murmur.”
To page 2.
From page 1. “I actually told Robert to rejoin
his friends, but had a little panic at one stage when he did leave.
“When I was all alone I thought ‘what do I do now?’ but he had only gone for a walk to stretch his legs and I was re-lieved to see him return.”
ABANDON SHIP“With that the hooter sounded
and the loudspeakers told all passengers to abandon ship.
“We went outside and prompt-ly slid across the deck as the boat was listing so badly. We were told to go to the fi rst lifeboat, but it was swaying around so much that we went to the second.
“Brett was dropped over the side to waiting arms, then I was dropped in too - thankfully Storm and Robert ended up in same lifeboat. It was open to the elements so we were drenched in a short period of time,
“I couldn’t see where we were or anything else - waves were crashing in everywhere and it was blowing a gale.
“They turned handles to move the lifeboat and we managed to pick up other people. Rescue boats tried to help tow us, but they couldn’t get a line aboard.”
Eventually they got to the beach at Seatoun and were the subject of the iconic photo of a lifeboat being pulled in.
The children were passed out
to strangers and Margaret leapt over the side only to fi nd she had gone in the deep end!
Wet and bedraggled she walked onto the beach in a daze, not sure where to go or what to do.
“With that a lady came walk-ing along with Brett in her arms - I had no idea where Storm was.
“We were taken in an ambu-lance to hospital to be checked over and I later found out Storm was taken to the train station by bus - she must have been terrifi ed.
“Every time rescuers asked her what her name was she said ‘Storm’ - but they had no idea that was her name, they thought she must have been traumatised by event!”
Meanwhile reports about the Wahine’s sinking was reaching the rest of country.
“I come from a big family, so my sisters huddled around the radio listening for news. Mother ironed for hours, too nervous to think of the possibilities of what had happened to us.”
Dane was told at Hawera that the Wahine had gone down and that his wife and children were aboard.
He arrived in Wellington, to fi nd Margaret and Brett safe at the hospital and Storm had been collected by friends.
“Dane headed back to Hawera after he found we were fi ne and I left hospital in oversized bor-rowed clothes.
“We had no money, no luggage or items. Some precious crys-tal that had been left to us by Dane’s grandmother was at the bottom of Wellington Harbour.
“We went home next day - no counselling, no contact from the shipping line, not a thing. We were just expected to get on with life.”
THANKFULMargaret did, however, want
to do something special to say thankyou to Robert Crawford.
“What on earth could I do or send to someone who had been a lifesaver? I decided to knit him a jersey.”
A couple of years later the family went past the wreck of the Wahine as they travelled on another ferry.
“It was a bit eerie and a bit sad. It took fi ve years for the boat to be completely salvaged.”
Over the years she has knitted another jersey for Robert who now lives in Canada, has done many interviews, visited several schools to tell her story and has made an archive audio tape.
But each year the family make a special effort to gather for din-ner on ‘Wahine night’ and count themselves lucky to be amongst the survivors.

On Wednesday April 2 at ap-proximately 1pm, persons un-known broke into my daugh-ter’s home and stole their TV and personal items, including jewellery.
Amongst these items was a
gold belcher bracelet that was given to my daughter when she was born and a Green-stone pendant belonging to my grandson - this has been blessed for him alone, so if you are wearing this I hope you get
what you deserve. Both these items have great sentimental value and are irreplaceable.
If you have got any con-science please post to PO Box 31, Te Awamutu.

End of an era for Te Awamutu CourierBy Cathy Asplin
A family link with the Te Awamutu Courier that has lasted almost 97 years will be broken tomorrow when general manager John Warburton retires.
John’s grandfather Arthur George (AG) Warbur-ton began the Waipa Post (later to become the Te Awamutu Courier) in 1911.
He had previously worked at the New Zealand Herald and several provincial newspapers before coming to Te Awamutu in 1908 to operate a com-mercial printing business.
However, he recognised the need for a newspaper in the growing town and so published the Waipa Post for the fi rst time on April 18, 1911.
The paper began as bi-weekly (published twice each week) and became tri-weekly in 1919.
It also published a number of other newspapers around the North Island and a number of other publications such as a dairy farming journal, a transport journal and a movie magazine.
The town also benefi ted from ‘AG’s’ involve-ment, as he was also a founding member of the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce, helped form the Te Awamutu Electric Power Board, was a founda-tion member of the Horticultural Society and was a life member of the Te Awamutu Municipal Band
His association with the paper continued for 45 years until shortly before his death in 1956.
SECOND GENERATIONAG Warburton’s son George joined the company in
1937 as a printing apprentice. He too became involved in the community - par-
ticularly the Acclimatisation Society and the Angli-can Church.
He was a foundation member of the New Zealand Community Newspapers Association (NZCNA), serving two years as president and eventually be-came a life member in 1987 after 28 years service.
He took over as secretary of Couriers NZ in 1986 and remained with the company until 1994 when he retired.
John joined the company in 1966 as an apprentice commercial typographer.
He went on to become assistant manager in 1976, then general manager in 1986.
He was also on the CNA committee for 10 years serving three years as vice president.
John’s son Steven was a printer with the com-pany for several years during the 1990’s, becoming the fourth generation Warburton to be at the Te Awamutu Courier.
During John’s time with the company printing
has changed radically from hot type (metal) to to-day’s digital age.
“In the days of hot type there was tons of lead used, dust everywhere and high levels of noise. I’m lucky to have witnessed the evolution of printing. Thanks to advances in technology the practical ‘hands-on’ work has today been replaced by computers.
“The standard of newspaper production has also had to improve radically over the years to keep in touch with competition from other media.”
TIME TO RETIREFor John retiring just short of the paper’s 100th
birthday was a diffi cult decision.“The hundredth birthday of the paper will be a
special date for the Warburton family and the Te Awamutu Courier to mark.
“However, over the years the role as manager has changed so much - as has the way newspapers are created - that many of my responsibilities have gone.”
He will retain some special memories of his 41 years at the Te Awamutu Courier where he has come to know many people and made some special friendships.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time at the Courier - we’ve been served by talented and dedicated staff and had great support from the community and business people.”
In retirement John is looking forward to enjoying more golf, fi shing and travel.
COMPANY HISTORY The Waipa Post was renamed the Te Awamutu
Courier in 1936 and the company (which included commercial printing) was known as Couriers NZ Ltd.
It was taken over by Wilson and Horton in Sep-tember 1992 and is today owned by APN.
At its height the company employed 35 people in 1995. At that time newspapers and other pub-lications were printed for various towns and cities around the upper North Island.
The Goss printing press (in the press hall be-hind the main building on Alexandra Street) went through tonnes of newsprint every week.
Today the Te Awamutu Courier has a staff of 14 as it no longer undertakes printing (the Goss news-paper printing press was removed in 1998 and the commercial printing department closed a few years later).
The Te Awamutu Courier is now sent electroni-cally to Tauranga where around 11,500 copies are printed and sent back by road for delivery.
AG WARBURTON GEORGE WARBURTON
RETIRING Te Awamutu Courier general manager John Warburton receives a plaque of appreciation from NZ APN publishing head Martin Simons at the APN National Conference at Wairakei.

DYNAMIC BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY TE AWAMUTU
A car stolen in Te Awamutu in February was used as the geta-way vehicle in a bank robbery in Ngaruawa-hia last week.
Police investigating the robbery of Ngarua-wahia National Bank are still seeking infor-mation from the public that will help fi nd the offender.
Constable Chris Cummings of Ngarua-wahia Police said a man entered the bank about 11.40am on Wednesday and passed a note to the female teller demand-ing money.
Described as a male Maori/Polynesian, aged about 32 years, the of-fender is of solid build and approximately 178cm in height.
“He was wearing quite distinctive head-wear, namely a winter style hat with ear cov-ers, tassels hanging below the ear covers
which are normally tied below the chin.
“It appears he had a peak capped under this winter hat. On the peak of the cap were two light coloured curved horizontal stripes,” said Mr Cummings.
Leaving the bank with an undisclosed sum of cash the of-fender fl ed in a silver Ford Falcon station wagon, registration ZY1558 that was later
recovered in nearby Jordan Street. The Fal-con was stolen from Te Awamutu on February 20 and Mr Cummings said Police were keen to trace its movements between then and when the robbery took place.
Anyone with infor-mation on that or the offender’s identity or whereabouts is asked to contact Mr Cummings at Ngaruawahia Police Station on 07 824 5474.

The Million Paws Walk comes to Te Awamutu on April 20.
Originally launched in Australia in 1994, the Million Paws Walk brings people and their pooches together for a fun, social event that helps raises funds for the SPCA.
In Te Awamutu the walk will start at Selwyn Park and take in the Pio-neer Walk.
In the park there will be displays and demonstrations, including an agility course, that local dogs can try with their handlers. There will also be spot prizes and a sausage sizzle.
Te Awamutu SPCA spokesperson
Dianne Gray says to take part in the all dogs must be healthy, non-aggres-sive and on a lead.
To become part of the walk you can pre-register (www.millionpawswalk.org.nz) or register on the day at Selwyn Park from 9am. Alternatively you can download a form from the website and send complete with entry fee ($10) to Te Awamutu SPCA , PO Box 386, Te Awamutu.
If you don’t have a dog to walk, but would like to support the SPCA and be part of the event, you can be a volunteer for the day. Contact the Te Awamutu SPCA (ph 871 5222).

Pirongia School’s recent school-wide triathlon also served as a Golden Circle fundraiser - with pupils’ efforts helping to raise $7,000 for new health and physical education resources.
This fundraising initiative involved school stu-dents who were taking part in the triathlon hav-ing the opportunity to seek sponsorship for their participation - this was completely voluntary.
As part of the Golden Circle fundraiser, stu-dents who were sponsored over $10 were reward-ed with great prizes and there was an extra prize as reward for the top fundraiser.
Golden Circle’s Pete the Pineapple visited the school on triathlon day to help cheer the children along. Participants received a medal, certifi cate and a free juicy ice stick for their efforts.
Two students raised over $200 each. A compe-tition between classes was also very successful with the top class earning over $800.
“These funds will add great new resources for the Health and Physical Education Curriculum at Pirongia School,” says Pirongia School PTA spokesperson, Debbie Petersen.
“Thanks to all those families and friends who supported Pirongia students with their fabulous fundraising efforts,” she says.RIGHT: Year 8 girl Lydia Barker leads the way in her section of the Pirongia School triathlon. 101087ADBELOW: PIneapple Pete proves popular with PIrongia pupils. Great turnout for inaugural Fools & Horses Fun Run
By Colin ThorsenThe inaugural Newstalk ZB Fools and
Horses Fun Run was a huge success around the world class equestrian cross-country course at Kihikihi Domain.
Over 150 athletes ranging in age from four years to senior citizens took up the new, exciting and totally unique chal-lenge.
The 5km run or walk staged by Cam-bridge Harriers, in association with Bev-an Houlbrooke of Mitavite International Horse Trials, had the participants nego-tiating logs, climbing walls and splashing through water obstacles.
Everyone appeared to have a ball.Several dressed up, adding to the party
atmosphere, including Scooby Doo, Osama bin Laden and George Bush.
John Cocks, alias Cocksy the Builder of TV fame, was one of the celebrities spot-ted running around the course with his little daughter.
“I’m thrilled with the response. To get that many for our fi rst every fun run and to see so many dress up is most encourag-ing,” says Houlbrooke.
“We’ll be defi nitely holding the event again next year - it can only get bigger
and brighter.”First male home was Hamish Fowlie
(23) in 17.07 minutes.“It was great fun, the course was re-
ally challenging in places,” Fowlie told the Courier.
It was the former Lodge Frankton Har-rier Club member’s fi rst run in two years.
He had competed in a similar type of event ‘Track and Trail’ on the Franklin motorcycle track 18 months ago. But unlike the pristine condition of the John Nicholson designed equestrian course at Kihikihi, it was knee high deep in mud in Franklin.
Fowlie says he will be back next year to defend his title at Kihikihi.
Second home was Sean Ouckama, for-merly of Ontario, Canada - now living in Hamilton. He was one minute behind the winner in 18.07.
The long trek from Taumarunui proved well worthwhile for the Van Hulst family.
Youngsters Nicky (13) and Sammy (10) were impressive third and fourth males home respectively in 18.28 and 18.32, while younger sister Stephy (9) was fi rst female child home and sixth overall.
Although no times were available, Ste-
phy headed home the women’s winner Siobhan O’Kane, who was 10th overall.
The Van Hulst children are all members of the Taumarunui Athletic Club. They train three-four times a week crosscoun-try.
The family moved to New Zealand two years ago from Holland.
After the fun run participants were free to enjoy the fi nal day of the Mitavite In-ternational Horse Trail, featuring show-jumping, a classic car display, music and a trade and food village.
Kaz Pollard says her 10-strong Inspire team, who walked the course, had a great time.
“Any fi tness event that’s fun gets the thumbs up from us.
“Mitavite Horse Trial did a great job by adding variety to a fun run with 26 jumps and two water crossings.”
Pollard says their superstar, cardboard cutout ‘Mollie’, who was strapped to a pram, negotiated 24 of the jumps.
“We were all very impressed by her de-termination.
“Mollie’s now aiming for all 26 jumps. We are hoping for a repeat of the event next year.”
INAUGURAL Fools & Horses Fun Run winner Hamish Fowlie wastes little time negotiating the fi rst of two water obstacles on the 5km course at Kihikihi Domain on Sunday. 101089AD

The local community is being invited to dig in to enhance the Ohaupo School grounds this Saturday by creating a native tree garden.
The parents and school are confi dent of a good turnout for the makeover working bee when they join forces with the Treemendous Team.
Friends of the school and lo-cal offi cials are being invited to lend a helping hand and local businesses are offering to do-nate materials and resources needed to create the garden.
The 150-pupil primary school is one of four schools selected from 188 nationwide applications for a Treemendous School Makeover - an initiative launched in August last year by the Mazda Foundation and the Project Crimson Trust.
The Ohaupo School’s plan - devised by students - is to plant the area in front of its two new classrooms which formerly held
the school’s swimming pool. The school wants the new garden to connect to the existing native bush on the back fence line which has trees as old as the school (prior to 1870).
Ohaupo School teacher Linda Clarke says the school has just begun the journey to become an Enviroschool.
The students have been in-volved in the planning of the makeover and will of course be getting their hands dirty planting and maintaining the garden.
The developed area will be for students to sit and relax and play games.
“Projects like this provide an opportunity for students, staff and parents to be involved in creative thinking, environ-mental action and the task of maintaining a garden into the future,” she says.
The three other schools for a Treemendous School Makeover
this year are Kaikohe’s Ohaea-wai School, Gisborne’s Wainui Beach School and Dunedin’s Karitane School.
Bridget Abernethy of Project Crimson says the calibre of applications for a makeover was high and the number of ap-plications received far exceeded expectations.
“We feel heartened by the commitment schools around New Zealand are making to the environment,” she says.
All of last year’s applicants have been invited to have their entries automatically forwarded into the next competition and will be contacted again before the closing date to make any changes to applications.
The annual campaign is a joint initiative of the Mazda Founda-tion, which provides funding for community projects, and Project Crimson which aims to renew and protect pohutukawa and rata in New Zealand.

The Junior Drop In, which provides school holiday activi-ties for primary school children, is desperately in need of more helpers.
“We need people who can give as little as three hours of their time, on a Wednesday or Thurs-day morning, during school holi-days,” says co-ordinator, Jackie Grinder.
“We would welcome even one or two days help. It is very re-warding working with the chil-dren. Some of the children come every day we are open, so we can get to know them really well.
“We have lots of wonderful equipment, but being short of helpers to show the children what to do with it and supervise, some is very rarely used.”
If more helpers do not come forward, the Junior Drop In will have to reduce the number of children able to attend each session.
The Junior Drop In was opened in Te Awamutu in March, 2001 and some of the fi rst helpers are still volunteering their time.
If you can help, or for more in-formation phone Jackie Grinder at 871 2935.

COLLEGE COLLEGE ConnectionzConnectionzCelebrating academic excellenceCelebrating academic excellence
This year’s Academic Excellence Evening was held at Vilagrad Winery where over 200 students, parents/caregivers, staff and Board of Trustees’ members cel-ebrated the achievements of the top students.
At this pleasant and celebratory function, 70 students (up from 58 last year) were presented with Bronze, Sil-ver or Gold medallions to recognise their wonderful achievements in NCEA Level 1 or 2 (2007). (Students receive their medallions based on gaining ‘Excellence’ credits in their assessments: Bronze 10 – 19, Silver 20 – 29, Gold 30+).
Top academic scholar in Year 11 2007 was Catherine Peake who gained 72 excellence credits and therefore received a Gold Distinction Medallion and a school blazer to wear for 2008.
Top academic scholar in Year 12 2007 was Lucy Moore with 57 excellence credits. Lucy will also wear the school blazer for the year.

Te Kotahitanga (Unity) is a collab-orative response to the problem of underachievement among Mãori students in mainstream schools.
As part of this professional development/research project, which began in 2001, the research team developed an Effective Teaching Profile based on sugges-tions made by Mãori students (as well as parents, teachers, principals and international literature).
Te Awamutu College has been in this project now for four years. Funding from the Ministry enables staff to be employed specifically to focus on raising Mãori achievement and provide professional develop-ment opportunities for teachers to support this goal.
School wide we are working on issues of attendance, retention of students in the Senior School, and reduction of stand down and sus-pension numbers.
Individual teachers have their classroom practice observed by a facilitator and then engage in discussion around the Effective Teacher Profile developed by the Te Kotahitanga Professional Devel-opment and Research Team.
While the discussion is around Mãori students, it has been identi-fied by the research team that all students in the class can benefit from the improved teaching and learning strategies used by the teacher.

A notable new development for the Te Awamutu College Annual Plan is that it is being promoted as a living document for the entire school community.
As well as being available on the www.teawamutucol.school.nz website, it is on display around the school to remind staff and students of what is planned and to sharpen the focus on expectations.
This year’s Annual Plan continues with our high targets at NCEA Lev-els 1, 2 and 3.
We are also gathering data at Years 9 and 10 to ensure we know
where students are at and what is needed to aid their progress and ensure that solid foundations are being laid for their future NCEA studies.
This year’s Annual Plan also doc-uments initiatives which also focus on student’s wellbeing, leadership and attendance. Various health initiatives will look to promote healthier food options and increase seating and shade areas.
A School Council will be estab-lished which will draw together student leaders from the various committees and forums which are
already successfully underway. The school has implemented an
Electronic Absence Alert System which has quickly improved stu-dents’ punctuality to school and classes and their overall attend-ance. It is vital that students attend school if they are to make progress, complete work and gain academic success.
Form teachers are working more closely this year with their students in setting short and long term goals. It is expected teachers will engage in a more mentoring type role and take an interest in the future aspira-tions of students.
Parents and caregivers should have sighted a ‘Long-Term Personal Education Plan’ which students de-veloped in February.
The school’s Discipline System was extensively reviewed at the end of last year. The steps of the system have been made abundantly clear to staff and students.
The College’s ‘Non-Negotiable Classroom Rules’ remain in place.
Annual Plan ~ 2008Annual Plan ~ 2008
A positive move for Te Awamutu College has been the appointment of Wayne Carter to the position of Deputy Principal, completing the senior management team along-side Principal Tony Membery and fellow deputies Mary Davis and Neil Bauernfeind.
Mr Membery says having a per-manent complement of senior staff gives the school extra stability and direction into the remainder of 2008 and beyond.
Te Awamutu College is in good heart and is relishing the positive feedback from the town and sur-rounding district.
There has been a quick settling in to the 2008 academic year and stu-dents seem to be genuinely pleased to be at school.
Healthy competition between house teams at swimming and ath-letic sports is building good house and school spirit, and the resur-rection of the Year 13 Camp was a tremendous success and has built a real rapport and spirit amongst the school’s most senior students.
RESULTS VERY PLEASINGImproving academic results from
the 2007 year are helping contrib-ute to the positive feeling in the school.
Staff are very pleased with the results which show they are on the right track with the various ini-tiatives the school employs, such as the 15+ Campaign.
At Level 1 75.2% gained their credits (compared with the na-tional average of 62.4%). A stag-gering 95.5% of Year 11 students gained their literacy requirements and 99.2% their numeracy - always a clear academic target for the school.
At Level 2 the success rate for gaining the qualification was 63.6% (close to the national average of
64.7%). Although there is room for improvement, staff are quite pleased that it is a significant step forward from the 51.4% success rate from the previous year.
At the senior level, 78% of Year 13 students who were in a position to gain Level 3 did so - a very pleasing result. The remaining Year 13s were mostly successful in gaining their Level 1 and 2 qualifications.
The results mean most Te Awamutu College students are leaving school with a qualification that will see them into tertiary stud-
ies, apprenticeships, cadetships or jobs and the school feels satisfied they are achieving their goal of opening the door to the future for Te Awamutu’s youth.
The challenge for the school now , says Mr membery, is to keep the success momentum going - this year’s Year 12 and 13 students need to work hard to make the ‘jump up’ to Levels 2 and 3. The 2008 Year 11 group need to be just as successful as last year’s - if not better - and this is the challenge that is being put to them.

FOR SALEFOR SALE Young golfi ng aceTim Young is once again the envy
of many of his golfi ng peers after holeing-in-one for the second time in nine months at Te Awamutu Golf Club.
The 12 handicapper played the perfect shot on the fi fth hole of 124 metres, using a pitching wedge, in Saturday’s scramble.
His ball landed in front of the pin, situated towards the back of the green, near the right hand bunker, and bounced straight into the cup.
Young was on an 18 handicap when he recorded his fi rst ace on the 11th hole of 165 metres, using a six iron, on July 28 last year.
It was indeed the perfect shot - the ball hit the edge of the cup on that occasion, making a dent, before
dropping straight into the hole.Young is only in his sixth season
of golf and many of his vastly more experienced club-mates are still dreaming of their fi rst ace.

Kihikihi retain Double Cup
Kihikihi Blue ten-nis team won the revamped Double Cup interclub competition.
Six teams of two men and two women entered the new-look competi-tion.
Kihikihi Blue won all but one match to fi nish on 16 points, Kihikihi Red (10), Te Awamutu (10), Roto-O-Rangi (9), Hairini (5) and Whare-papa South (1).
In the fi nal round Kihikihi Blue beat Te Awamutu 5-3.
The victorious team throughout the season was Brett Alexander, Paul Tuckey, Michael Black, Barbara Waters, Denise Tims, Rosemary Fleming.
Kihikihi won the Double Cup when it was last played in 2002-03 season when there were four men and four women in each team.
Camp rising starKatherine Camp was rewarded
with a brace of bronze medals for three days of 100 per cent committed performances at the New Zealand Track and Field Championships.
The Ngahinapouri teenager was one of the busier Waikato athletes at Mount Smart Stadium.
On day one she qualifi ed for the under-16 years 300m hurdle and 400m fi nals, as well as fi nishing fi fth in the fi nal of the long jump with a personal best 5.21m.
Camp and Te Awamutu Athletic Club’s other Waikato representative Laura Sinclair were both in action on day two.
Sinclair ran an outstanding wom-en’s 19 800m fi nal, being up with the leaders throughout the race. She fought hard in the home straight to fi nish a creditable fi fth in a personal best 2.15 minutes
Camp was well below her best fi nishing a disappointing seventh in the 400m fi nal.
She also ran the second leg of the 4x100 relay, helping Waikato to third place.
Day three saw Camp line up in the
300m hurdle fi nal as fourth fastest qualifi er. She kept to her pre-race plan of starting at a very fast pace and maintained it right to the line - fi nishing third in a personal best 45.76 seconds.
Sinclair ran a well judged race in the 1500m fi nal, but was unable to fi nish as strong as she did in the 800m. Nonetheless, she did record another PB in fi nishing eighth in 4.43.
Both girls were involved in the 4x400m relay fi nal. Sinclair’s team fi nished fourth and Camp’s fi fth.
Griffi n tops scrambleDawn Griffi n fared best with 38
stableford on women’s club day at Stewart Alexander Golf Club.
Griffi n was one point clear of Jan Yarndley, who claimed the runner-up spot (by lot) from Sharyn Hay-cock, also on 37 points.
The minor placings were fi lled by E. Ford, E. Troutbeck 35, B. Her-bert, M. Bouma 34, C. Forster 33, B. Roigard, A. McGhie and H. Berg 32.
Yarndley recorded the only two.

The Taranaki rider made light of her huge achievement when standing on the podium on Sunday.
“This is where I want to be at the Olympics,” she said.
But her task of se-lection has been made harder by the resur-gence of former dual gold medallist Mark Todd, who has come out of retirement.
Unlike Todd, Tomp-kins has chosen to base her Olympic campaign from New Zealand.
She hopes last week-end’s victory in the fl agship class of the Mitavite International Horse Trial will be enough to cement her position when the team is announced in June.
Tompkins was the best placed New Zea-land rider at the 2004 Athens Olympics and 2006 FEI World Eques-trian Games on the vet-eran Glengarrick.
She now has a new horse, Mount Sugoi, with which she is one of eight listed riders for the Beijing Olympics in August.
Tompkins and Mount Sugoi led the World Cup qualifi er class of 10 riders on a dres-sage score of 52.6 and, with the fastest cross-
country time around the inventive course, designed by John Ni-cholson (brother of New Zealand team rider Andrew), retained her pole position with 2.8 time penalties to add.
This gave her the luxury of two show jumps in hand over her nearest rival, Anne-Marie Styles on Opera Groove.
Both Styles and third-placed Jonathan Pagent, who was cross-country trailblazer
on the inexperienced Clifton Promise, also jumped clear to retain their positions.
There were fi ve clear cross-country rounds in all over Kihikihi’s im-aginative course, which uses Winnie the Pooh as its central theme.
A second water com-plex this year proved popular with riders and spectators alike..
Last year’s winner, Otago student Clarke Johnstone on Oakley Vision, ran out at a
narrow stump before the second water com-plex - relegating him from third place after dressage to eventual seventh.
Taranaki’s Matthew Grayling, a three-times winner of this event, will miss out on Olym-pic selection because his top horse Gordon is sidelined.
Grayling fi nished eighth after a cross-country fall on the youngster NRM Ru Star.

Te Awamutu made the best possible start to the Waikato Bay of Plenty Federation Cup soccer competition beating Rotorua City 2-1 at Anchor Park.
Mortgage Express Te Awamutu opened the scoring midway through the fi rst half on Saturday when a Jordan Ball corner was headed home by captain Karl Miezenbeek.
It proved to be the only goal of the fi rst half.
Some inspirational words from coach Tim Ball during the break soon had the home team back on the offence.
Andrew Ryan broke away from the Rotorua City defence with a lethal com-bination of speed and deft footwork, then chipped the ball over the advancing keep-er’s head for the goal of the match.
Rotorua managed a consolation goal late in the match when they were awarded a penalty for an obstruction offence.
Both teams had several other scoring opportunities - Rotorua being unlucky to have a shot rebound off the upright and other shots either saved by keeper Kevin
Buckle or go wide.Jordan Ball went close a couple times for
Te Awamutu.Player of the day was Andrew Ryan for
his outstanding goal and high work rate.Other stand out players were Michael
Rose on debut, Davieth Verhey and Marc Blake in defence, and Jordan Ball up front.
Te Awamutu are away to Claudelands Rovers this Saturday.
Cape Physio Te Awamutu Reserve Team lost 4-1 away to West Hamilton.
Te Awamutu’s goal scorer was Darren Baldock.
One of the highlights of the game was Te Awamutu substitute keeper Kim Brierley saving a West Hamilton shot from the pen-alty spot.
The Reserve’s are away to Otorohanga in round two.
Print House Te Awamutu Third Team kicked their season off on the right note beating Hamilton North Debacles 2-1 at Anchor Park.

Pixie Tims set up one goal and scored two her-self as Te Awamutu opened their Waikato women’s fi rst division soccer campaign with an emphatic 4-0 win over Claudelands Rovers.
Player of the day Tims set up Janis James for the season opener, headed home a cross from mid-fi elder Natalie Cocker for a 2-0 lead and found the back of the net again after being set up by James.
Furniture Court Te Awamutu led 3-0 at halft-ime.
Rovers could consider themselves a trifl e un-lucky not to score in the opening stanza, having breached the defence a number of times.
New Te Awamutu keeper Charlotte Meyers cleaned up nicely and had an effective day in goal.
Defender Sara Harvey latched onto an at-tempted through pass and immediately launched a counter-attack with a well-weighted ball that found Larissa Richards. She beat the keeper for goal number four.
Standout in defence was Rangiputa Wallace, who has made the transition from College to wom-en’s fi rst division with ease. She made a number of penetrating runs up the right wing, causing problems for the Rover’s defence.
Waikato Cakes Te Awamutu Reserve Women’s Team lost 2-0 to Morrinsville Razor despite camp-ing in the oppositon half for most of the game.

Super stock car actionMcDonald’s Kihikihi Speed-
way has attracted an even better fi eld for their second attempt to stage the PTR Racing New Zealand Superstock Grand Prix - after the original meeting was rained out.
Greg Maxted reports there is a superb support programme for the two-day speedway feast at Kihikihi this weekend.
The King Country Superstock Championships will be run in conjunction with the fi rst round of the King Country Saloon Championships on Saturday.
The eagerly awaited Super-stock Grand Prix and the always entertaining King Country Stockcar Teams Challenge will be held on Sunday.
And to offer something a bit different in between the crash and bash - the Midgets will be out in force for the Rosetown Midget 30-lap Derby, along with the second round of the King Country Saloons.
Leading the list for the Super-stock Grand Prix is the defend-ing champion 7P Shane Penn, who won the title at the Hawkes Bay track last season.
Penn was unable to make the original event, due to concus-sion while racing at Palmerston North, but the rain delay means he is now raring to go.
The current top three from the New Zealand Championships are all lining up. 1NZ Kyle Fraser will be making his fi rst appear-ance at Kihikihi, as will Austral-ian based 2NZ Wayne Hemi. 3NZ Darryl Taylor, who races out of the small Wanganui Club, raced at Kihikihi last season when con-testing the North Islands.
The locals will once again have something to cheer about with fi ve Kihikihi cars included in the 31 entered to date.
The experienced 6K Kerry
Remnant will be the one every has their eye on but 5K Brad Ridland and 28K Grant Mytton both have the potential for top results.
If previous form at Kihikihi counts for anything, both Penn and Remnant will need to keep an eye in their mirrors for 337R Darcy Hunter.
The former New Zealand Champion was a convincing winner of the North Island Su-perstock Championships in 2007 - the last time a competitive Su-perstock fi eld raced at Kihikihi.
This time Hunter will be aided by a further six Rotorua cars making the trip to Kihikihi, including the evergreens 87R Pat Westbury and 515R Stan Hickey.
Special mention has to be made of 14N Dale Ewers and 19C Mal-colm Ngatai, who will be making
the long trip up from Nelson and Christchurch respectively.
These two drivers have been frontrunners in the South this season and are both former South Island champions.
Dave Baker, in car 9H, will not win the title this weekend but he will take out a few title contend-ers as he spends the day crawl-ing the pole line.
Baker’s antics will not only please the crowd but if team tactics come into play he could also help club-mate 85H Jared Wade claim his fi rst major vic-tory since changing to one of the unique Podjursky tanks.
A strong support programme is always needed to make any meeting a success and that is certainly something this event has.
It promises to be a memorable two days of speedway action.
