TO REMOVE MINI TILLER/CULTIVATOR FROM CARTON

• Remove the plastic parts bag from thecarton.

• Remove the handles from the carton.

- Remove packing insert from carton°* Lift the mini tillerlcultivator out of the

_arton and place on a hard level surface.. Remove packing material from around

tines.

TO INSTALL THE HANDLEASSEMBLY

The lower handles have a short bend at thebottom end and are flattened at the top to al-low the upper handle to be placed betweenthe lower handlesoTo assemble thehandles, do the following:. Unwind the throttle control from around

the engine and straighten the cabte_ Becareful you do not kink 1he cable,,

• Remove hardware from upper handieassembly.

• Place the upper handle between thelower handles and secure with two

curved head carriage belts, two formedwashers, two 11/32 inch flatwashers andtwo tee knobs on the inside of the handle°

Fingertightenonly.° Using two 7/16 inch wrenches, tighten

the Iocknuts on the screws in the lower

ends of the lower handles just enough tohold the lower handles firmly in place

IMPORTANt; Overtighteningthe screwsenough to changethe shapeof thehandlescan resultindamageto the en-ginecasting.

• Hold the curved head carriage boltagainst the outside of the lower handlewhile tightening the tee knobs securely.

TO INSTALL THE THROTTLECONTROL ASSEMBLY

• Place a Nov 10 x 1-1/2 inch hex headscrew down through the hole in the upperhandle right side and attach the throttlecontrol to the underside of the handle.

See figure Iower right.• Attach the throttle cable to the right lower

handle by threading a tie strap throughthe hole in the lower handle and aroundthe throttle cable on the outside of thehandle.

• Thread the pointed end of the strapthrough the other (square) end of thestrap and pull tight around the throttlecable and lower handle,

NOTE; One side of thetie strap is rough,whiletheotherside is smooth.The roughsidemust be onthe insideof the loopformed whenthe endsofthetie strapareputtogether.

• Try to loosen the tie strap_ If it will loosen,it has been put together incorrectly withthe smooth side to the inside of the loopRemove the tie strap and reverse thedirection°

• Cut off excess strap,

HOW TO USE YOUR TILLER/CULTIVATOR.A

/_ WARNING: The operation of thismini tiller/cultivatorcan result in foreign ob-jects being thrown into the eyes, which cancause severe eye damage. Always wearsafety glasses or eye shields while operat*ing the mini tiller/cultivator.

TO STOP MINI TILLER]CULTIVATOR

• Release the throttle control to stop thetines.

• Move the shut-off switchon the engine tothe OFF position.

TO OPERATEMINi TILLER/CULTIVATOR

Set the depth stake/transport wheelsassembly to the desired tillingpositionasfollows:

. Remove the hairpin cotter from the clevispin securing the depth stake_Remove theclevis pin and adjust the depth stakeupward to dig shallower or downward todig deeper° Reinstall the clevis pin andhairpin cotter..

, Start the engine, tilt the unit back on thedepth stake until the tines are off theground and squeeze the throttle controlall the way up against the hand grip. Theengine is governor controlled and shouldbe run at full throttle.

• Grasp the handles firmly and slowly tiltthe unit forward to begin the tillingaction.

• As the tines begin to make contact withthe ground, hold back on the handles sothat the tines willdig and not ride forwardover the ground. Hold back until the tines

dig into the soil,

• if the ttlled depth is too deep or tooshallow, turn off the engine and reset thedepth stake_

, tf depthstake is not controllingforwardaction, lower the depth stake. If the unit

is not going forward, raise the depth

BEFORE STARTING ENGINEFILL GAS

'Thetwo cycle engine used on this mini tiller/cultivatorrequires a mixture of gasoline andoil for lubrication of the bearings and othermoving parts, The correct fuel mixture ratiois 24:1 (see Fuel Mixture Chart). Gasolineand oil must be premixed in a clean gaso-line container. Always use fresh, clean un-

ed gasoline.CAUTION: Gasoline is flammable

and caution must be used when handlingor storing it. Do not fill fuel tank while minitiller/cultivatoris running, hot, or when it isin an enclosed area_Keep fuel away'fromopen flame and electrical spark. DO NOTSMOKE while mixing fuel or filling the fueltank_Never fill fuel tank completely, butfill it to within !/4 - 1/2 inch from the top toprovide space for expansion of fuel. Al-ways fill fuel tank outdoors and use a fun-nel or spout to prevent spilling. Make sureto wipe up any spilled fuel before startingthe engine.

that alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol orusing ethanol or methanol) can attractmoisture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage. Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of an en-

gine while in storage° To avoid engine prob-lems, the fuel system should be emptiedbefore storage for 30 days or Ionger. Drainthe gas tank, startthe engine and let it rununtil the fuel lines and carburetor are empty.Use fresh fuel next season. Mix gasoline and oi! 24:1 as follows:

- Pour 1 U.S. quart of fresh, clean,unleaded automotive gasoline into agallon gasoline container,

- Add 5 oz.(found in carton) of clean, highquality SAE 30 or SAE 40 two-cycle oilinto the gasoline container.IMPORTANT: DO NOT use OutboardMotor Oil or Muitt-Vfscosity Oils, suchas 10W-30 or 10W-40o

• Reinstall the cap on the gasoline con-tainer and shake container vigorously sothe oil mixes withthe gasoline.

, Add an additional 3 U.S.. quarts ofgasoline to the gallon container andshake the container again..

• This completes the special gasolinemixing procedure. It can now be pouredinto the mini tillerlcultivator fuel tank.IMPORTANT: DO NOT Fill fuel tankwith gasoline that does not have oil mixedin it. TO START THE ENGINE

Before starting the engine, be sure youhave read and understood all the instruc-tions on the preceding pages.• Fill the fueltank to 1/2 inch belowthe

bottom of the fill neck with fresh fuel mix

and reinstallthe fuel tank cap securely,.Never use fue! that may be stale fromlong periods of storage°

• Move the shut.off switch to the ONposition°

• Move the choke control (see figure, page7) to the FULL CHOKE position (all the

NOTE: A warm engine should not re-quire choking.

• Tilt the minl tiller/cultivatorback on the

depth stake or transportwheels to raisethe tines off the ground.

• Grasp the upper handle firmly to stabilizethe mini tiller/cultivator and puff the starterhandle with shortquick pullsoDo r_otaltow the starter handle to snap back° Letit rewind slowly while hoiding the starterrope, It will take a few pulis on the starterhandle to feed gas from the fuel tank tothe carburetor.

• When engine starts, move the chokecontrol to HALF CHOKE positionuntil theengine runs smoothly. Than move chokecontrol to NO CHOKE position (atl theway up)_

° If engine falters, move choke control toHALF CHOKE position until engine runssmoothly,. Then move choke control toNO CHOKE position.

• If engine fires, but does not continue torun, move choke control to NO CHOKE

position and repeat starting instructions..

NOTE; If the tines do not stop when thethrottle control is released, adjust thecarburetor idle speed as instructed inStep 5 of Carburetor Adjustment para-graph in the Sorvlce/Adjustmentssection of this manual.

To stop the engine, release the throttlecontrol and move the shut-off switch to

the OFF position.

- If the engine becomes flooded, see theSpark Plug Maintenance paragraph in theMalntenanc_ section of this manual

Then pull the starter rope with the chokelever in the NO CHOKE position.

CAUTION: The muffler and sur..rounding areas become hot after runningthe engine_ Avoid these areas,

TILLING HINTS

• Tilling is digging in, turning over andbreaking up packed soil before planting.Loose unpacked soil helps root growth.Best tilling depth is 4 to 6 inches. A tillerwill alsoclear the soil of unwanted

vegetation. The decompositionof thisvegetation matter enriches the soilDepending on the climate (rainfall andwind), it may be advisable to tillthe soil atthe end of the growingseason to furtherconditionthe soil,

. Avoid tilling soil that is too dry as itwillpulverize and produce a dust that willnothold water. Also, tillingsoil that is too wetwill be hard on the machine and produceunsatisfactory clods,

. Better growth will be obtained in tilledground ifa relatively small area is tilledproperly and the tilled ground is usedsoon after tillingto preserve the moisturecontent.

• The depth stake (on the back of the minitilter/cultivator)serves a dual purpose(see figure, page 8) It helps regulate thedepth of the cut to a uniform level andalso acts as a brake to help the operatorcontrol the speed of the mini tiller/cultivator,

. Lowering the depth stake willslow theminitiller/cultivatorand make it tilldeeper..Raising the depth bar will allow it to movefaster and till more shaliowo

• If the mini tiller!cultivatorstops for,Nardmotion and tries to dig deeper thannecessary, move the handles from side toside to start forward motion.

WEED REMOVAL HINTS

• When using the mint tiller/cultivatortoremove weeds, it is best to till no deeperthan t-1/2 Inches° Tilling deeper willonlypull to the surface ungerminatedweedseeds. You may want to raise the depthbar to lessen the braking action.

• When tillingaround plants or close areas,you may want to remove the outside tines(see Tine Replacement paragraph intheServlcelAdjustments section of thismanual).

LUBRICATION

Every 25 hours and!or at the beginning ofeach season, the gear box should be _ledwith lubricant° Tubes of gear lubricant areavailable from most automotive supplystores, Use portable tool grease such asLubriplate 630AA (Product No. 06787, !-3/4oz, tube) or Lubriplate GR-132 (Product No.15892, t0 oz. tube),, The tine shaft shouldhave oil applied to itbefore storage and af-ter it is cleaned by flushing it with water.The illustration to the right is provided to as-sist the operator in properly maintain{ng themini tiller/cultivator.

CAUTION: Allow the transmissionto

left side ot the transmission.

Using a grease gun, fillthe transmissionthrough the grease fittinguntil the newgrease begins to come out of the air ventscrew hole,

• Reinstall the air vent screw.- Check the conditionof the felt washer in

the side of the transmission at the tine

shaft. Replace the felt washer if it isdamaged (see Repair Parts section inthis manual).

• Clean tine shaft and spread a few clrops

of oil on shaft in fine replacement areas,Reinstall the tines°

• Remove the right side tines. Check thefelt washer for damage, clean and oil theline shaft, Reinstall the tines.

AIR CLEANER MAINTENANCE

The air cleaner fiker should be cleaned andre-oiled after every 25 hours of use, Cleanmore often under dusty conditions.

IMPORTANT: The engine can be worn outIn a very short period of time ifdirt or grit isallowed to enter the engine.

To clean the air filter, do the following:. Loosen screws on air cleaner cover and

remove the cover_• Remove foam element from alr cleaner.

• Wipe inside of air cleaner housingclean.• Clean foam element by washing in strong

solution of water and household deter-

gent. Rinse thoroughly in clean water.. Wrap foam element in clean cloth and

squeeze out (do not twist) all the liquiduntil dry,.

, Cover the ends and side of the foamelement with same oil used in fuelmixture. Knead the foam etement

between fingers to distribute oil andremove excess oil

• Reinstall foam element in air cleaner

housing.. Service foam element carefully. Inspect

for deterioration or damage. A defective,improperlyserviced, or mistakenlyassembled air filter will allow dirt particles

to enter the engine.- Reassemble the filter. Place the cover on

the air cleaner housing and tighten screwsto secure cover to the housing.

a_rc CAUNON: Never runengine withoutleaner element installed. A defective air

cleaner can result in lossof engine powerand cause excessive wear or damage to en-gine components if dirtor dust is permittedto enter the engine through the carburetor°An air cleaner that is clogged withdust ordirt should be cleaned and re-oiled.

CYUNDER EXHAUST PORTS

The cylinder exhaust ports should becleaned after each seventy-five (75) to onehundred (100) hours of operation, For thisprocedure we recommend that you takeyour unit to a Sears Service Center.

CLEANING

Always remove the dirt and debris from theminiti!lerlcultivatorafter each use. Removeany string, wire or vegetation that may be-come lodged inthe mechanism and stop thetine rotation Proceed as follows:

• Release the throttle controland move the

shut-off switch to the OFF position,thendisconnect the spark plug wire.

. Remove the hairpin and clevis pinsecuring the tine(s) assembly to the shaftand remove the tine(s)o

• Remove the lodged material, Reassemblethe tine(s) on the shaft and secure with aclevis pin and hairpin,,

• Reconnect the spark plug wire and restartthe engine.

TINE REPLACEMENT

The mini tillerlcultivatoris left hand or righthand as viewed from the operator's positionbehind the unit.All four tines on this unit are different andcannot be interchanged..The tines mustbeproperly installed as shown in figures to theright or the mini tiller/cultivator will not func-tion properly,,For working close around plants or in smallareas, the OLrlsidetines may be removed toreduce the tilling width to about 7 inches. Toreinstall the outside tines see below.

CAUTION: The tines are sell sharp+ening and wilt become quite sharp fromuse. Handle carefully_

The tines will all wear fairly evenly° ti thetines are being replaced because of wear,we recommend that all four tines be re-placed at the same time. To replace thetines, do the following:. Place the shut-off switch to the OFF

position and disconnect the spark plugwire.

• Remove the hairpins and the clevis pinsfrom the tines on one side of the unit and

then remove the tines.,See figure,previous page+

o Clean the line shaft and oit it at the linelocations.

o Place the inside line on the tine shaft and

reinstall the clevis pin and hairpin_• When the tines are properly installed,the

letter R will be visible on the outside ofthe right+handtine (the letter L on the left.hand tine)_ The letter should appearopposite the small hole in the side of thet|ne°

• Place the outside tine on the tine shaft

and reinstall the clevis pin and hairpino° The outside tine cutting tips will all bend

in toward the inside tine_The letter R on

the right side or L on the left side shouidbe visible from the outside of the unit°

• Repeat the above steps on the oppositeside of the unit.

° Check to make sure the tines areinstalled on correct side of the unit

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

A dirty air cleaner will cause the engine torun improperlyand/or smoke excessively._Be sure the air cleaner is clean before ad-justing the carburetor° Never make unnec+essary adjustments to the carburetor+Thecarburetor was set at the factory to operateefficiently under most applications+How-ever, if adjustments are required, we recom-mend you contact your nearest Sears Ser-vice Center,, If you feel that you are qompe+tent to make carburetor adjustment proceedas follows:

m_a CAUTION: Use extreme care whening adjustments that requirethe engine

to be running, Keep hands, feet, hair andloose clothing away from any moving part

, Turn the mixture adjustment screwclockwise to close.

IMPORTANT: Tighten the adjustingscrew withyour fingers to prevent dam-age to the carburetor or adjusting screw..

• Turn the mixture screw counterclockwise

open one (t) turn+• Start the engine and let it warm up

approximately3 to 5 minutes+ Do notadjust the carburetor when the engine iscold+

• If the engine falters or stops after thechoke lever is moved to the OFF position,open the mixture adjusting screw anadditional t/8 turn countemlockwise.

• With the engine running, release thethrottle control (idle position) to make themixtureadjustments. Then perform thefollowing:

• Turn the mixture adjusting screw slowlyclockwise until the engine falters, Notethis location.

- Turn the mixture adjusting screw slowlycounterclockwise untilthe engine startsto sputter. Note this location.

• Turn the mixture adjusting screwclockwise until it is halfway between thefirst positionwhere the engine falteredand the second position where theengine started to sputter.

The idle speed may need to be adjustedafter making the mixture adjustment° Ifthe tines do not turn when the engine isrunning and the throttle control isreleased, the idle speed will not needadjusting, if the tines turn when thethrottle control is released, do thefollowing:• Have someone tilt the mini tiller/

cultivatorback on its depth stake sothat the tines are off the ground.

• Start the engine.o With the throttle in the released (Idle)

position, turn the idle speed adjustingscrew counterclockwise until the tines

stop rotating.

,/_ CAUTION: Never tamper with the en-

gine governor which is factory sat for properengine speed. Over-speeding the engineabove the factory set high speed can bedangerous. If you think the engine-governedhigh speed needs adjusting, contact yournearest Sears Service Center°

A_CAUTION: Never store engine withfuel in tank indoors or in enclosed, poorlyventilated areas where fuel fumes manyreach an open flame, spark or pilot lightason a furnace, water heater, clothes dryer,etc.

NOTE: The mini tiller/cultivator should beimmediately prepared for storage at the endof the season or if the unit wiUnot be usedfor 30 days or more,,

MINi TILLER/CULTIVATOR

• Thoroughly clean the minitilter/cultivator.Remove alldirt and debris from the

engine and unit.• Remove the tines, oil the line shaft and

reinstall the tines (see Service andAdjustments section in this manual).

• Loosen the tee knobs that secure the

upper handle to the lower handle.• Carefully fold the upper handle down,

making sure the throttle is not kinked_Tighten the tee knobs_

The cross piece of the Upperhandle(between the lower handles) can now beused as a carry handle or can be hookedover a wall hook to store the mini tiller/

cultivator up off the floor and out of theway°If possible, store your mini tiller/cultivatorindoors and cover it to give protectionfrom dust and dirt.Cover the mini tiller/cultivatorwith a

suitable protective cover that does notretain moisture. Do not use plastic.

IMPORTANT: Never cover the minitiller/

cultivatorwhile the engine and exhaustareas are still warm..

NOTE: A yearly checkup or tune-up by aSears Service Center is a good way toinsure that your mini tiller/cultivator willprovide maximum performance for thenext season.

ENGINE

IMPORTAWI': It is important to preventgum deposits from forming in essential fuelsystem parts such as the carburetor, fuel fil-ter, fuel hose or tank during storage. Also,experience indicates that alcohoi blendedfuels (called gasohotor using ethanol ormethanol) can attract moisture which leadsto separation and formation of acids duringstorage_ Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage,• Drain the fuel from the fuel tank into an

approved container outdoors, away fromopen flame,

Start and run the engine until it stops dueto lack of fuel

• Con una pistola de grasa, Ilene latransmisi6n a trav_s del accesorio degrasa hasta que la grasa nueva empiecea salir del agujero del torni!lo de laventilaci6n de aire

. Vuelva a instalar el tornillo de ta venti-laci6n de aire

. Revise la condici6n de la arandeta defieltro en el tado de la transmisi6n en eteje de los brazosvea que vienea figure.Cambie la arandeta de fieltro, si est,.daSada (yea la secci6n de Partes deRepuesto en este manual).

• Limpie el eje de los brazos, reparta unascuantas gores de aceite en el eje, en las

MANTENIMIENTO DE LA BUJIA

Si se ahoga el motor, Iimpie el areaalrededor de la base de la bujta para evitarque e! material extraSo entre en loscilindroscuando se remueva la buj{a.Remueva y sequela bujfa. Vuelva aajustar los electrodos a 0.035 si esnecesado. Si se necesita una bujfa nuevarefi_rase ala table de Especificaciones delProducto que aparece an este manual parepoder eallzar sl cambio en formaapropiadao Apriete la bujfa firmemente. Sihay disponible una Uave de torsidn, torsionela bujfa a 15 pies libra,MANTFJ',ilMIENTO DEL FILTRO DE AIRE

El tiltro de aire tiene que limpiarse yaceitarse despu_s de cada 25 horas deuso. Llmpielo m_s a menudo bajocondiciones polvorosas.

CAMBIO DE LOS BRAZOS

Cuando se trabaje cerca de las plantas o en&reas pequefias, se pueden remover losbrazos exteriores para reducir et ancho decultivo a alrededor de 7 puFgadas.Parevotver instalar los brazos exteriores vea acontinuaciSn.

PRECAUCION: Los brazos sonautoatilables y se pondran bastante afiladosdebido al usoo Manejelos con cuidado_Los brazos se van a desgastar todos anformapersia, Si se cambfan debido al desgaste, lerecomendamos que se cambien los cuatro almismotiempo. Paracambiar Iosbrazos hagalo siguiente:

• Ponga el interruptorde apagado en lapostctSnde "APAGADO" (OFF) ydesconecte el atambre de la bujia.

o Remueva las horquillas y las clavijas dehorquilla de los brazos an un tado de launidad y remueva los brazos,

, Limple el eje de los brazos y aceite el ejeen las ubicadones de los brazos..

• Ponga el braze interior en el eje de losbrazos y vuelva a instalar la clavija dehorquilla y la horqui!ia_

• Cuando los brazos se han instatado enlorma adecuada, quedar& visible la letraR en el lado exterior dei brazo dot ladoderecho (la letra L quedar& visible en elbrazo dot lado izquierdo)- La letra debeaparecer en el lugar opuesto ai pequeSoagujero en el ]ado del brazoo

• Ponga el brazo exterior en el eje de losbrazos y vuelva a instalar la ciavija dehorquitla y el pasador de horquilla.

• Las puntas de cotte del braze exterior vana quedar dobladas hacia el brazo interior.La letra R en el lado derecho o la letra Len el lado izquierdo debe quedar visibledesde la parte exterior de la unidad.

° Repita los pasos para el fado opuesto dela unidad.

ORIFICIOS DE DESCARGA DELClLINDRO

Los orificiosde descarga del cilindrotienenque limpiarse despuds de cada setenta ycinco (75) a cien (100) horas de operaci6n+Con este fin le recomendamos que Iteve suunidad a un t_cnico capacitado paratrabajar en motores de dos tiempos, alcentre de servicioSears.

LIMPIEZA

Siempre remueva la mugre y la basura dela mini zurcadora/cuttivadoradespu_s decada use vea la figura abajo+ Remuavacualquier corde!, alambte o la vegetaci6nque puedan haberse quedado atrapados enel mecanismo y deteniclo la rotac_6nde toebrazes+ Proceda seg_n io siguiente:

• Suelte st contro!de la aceleraclbn ymueva el interrupterde apagado a laposicibn de "APAGADO" (OFF), luegodesconecte st alambre de la bujla.

• Remueva la horqullla y la clavija dehorquillaque aseguran el conjunto detbraze(s) en el eje y remueva los brazesyea la figura abajo+

° Remueva el material atrapado+ Vuelva areenter los brazes en el eje y asegereloscon una ctavija de horquifla y con lahorquil_a.

• Vuetva a conectar el atambre de la bujfay vuelva a hacer arrancar el motor.

. Glre el tornfllode ajuste de la mezcla,lentamenta, en e?sentido contrario a lasmanillas del reloj, hasta qua el motorempieza a chisporrotearo Fl'jese cu&t esesta ub[caci6m

• Gtre el tornillode ajuste de la mezcla, enel sentido de las manilias del reloj, hastaqua llegue a medio camino entre laprimera posic[6n,cuando el motortitubeaba, y la segunda posiciSn cuandoel motor empez6.

. Puede qua sea necesario ajustar laveloc[dad an vacfodespu6s de hacer elajuste de la mezclao Si los brazos nogiran cuando el motor est&funcionando yse suelta el controlde la aceteracibn, lavelocidaden vact'o no va a necesitarajusteo Si los brazos giran cuando sesuelta et controlde la aceleracidn, haga!o stgulente:

• Haga qua alguien incline la minizurcadora/cultivadora hacia atr&s, sobrela estaca de profundidad, de modo qualos brazos queden levantados del suelo°

• Haga arrancar el motor.

• Con la aceteracidn en la posici6n sue]ta(vac[o), gire el torntllode ajuste de lavetocidaden vacfo, en el sentfdocontrario alas manillas del reloj, hastequa los brazos dejan de rotaro

Z_ PRECAUCION: Nunca manipulee elreguladordel motor, el qua ha sido ajustadoen la fabrica pare la vetocidad del motoradecuada. Puede ser peligroso hacerfuncionar el motor a una velocidad porsobre e! ajuste de alta veiocidad de lafabr_ca. Si cree qua la velocidad altaregulada del motor necesita ajuste,pongase en contacto con su centro deservicio Sears autorizado mas cercano.

PRECAUClON: Nanca almacene elmotorcon combustible en el estanque enun rencintocerrado o en un area cerrada yreal ventilada en donde los vapores de lagasolina puedan alcanzar una llamaespuesta, una chispa, o una luz pilotocomolas calderas, el ca|entador de agua, lasecadora de ropa, etc,

• Suelte las manillas T qua aseguran etmango superior af mango inferior_

• Con cuidado, dobla el mango superiorhacla abajo asegur_ndose qua laaceteraci6n no est& enrededa. Aprtete lasmaniUas 1".

. La pieza t_ansversal del mango superior(entre los mangos inferiores) ahora sepuede usar como un mango portador o sepuede colgar en un gancho de la paredpare aJmacenar la mini zurcadora/cultivadora colgada fuera del piso y fueradet paso_

° Sl es posible, guards su mini zurcadora/culfivadora en un recinto cerrado ycSbrala para protegerla contra el polvo yla mugre.

• Cubra la mini zurcadora/cuttivadora conuna cubierta protectora adecuada qua noretenga la humedad, No use pl&stico,
