Freedom EVO 75 – compact liquid handling powerfor small life science laboratories in academia,biotechnology research, analytics and diagnostics,or as a personal system for optimizing processes off-line in larger pharmaceutical or agrochemicalcompanies. Liquid handling flexibility. The Freedom EVO work-stations offer combinations of 1 – 384 precisionpipetting tips and a liquid volume range from 10 nlto over 10 ml to power laboratory applicationswithin a single platform*. A choice of washable ordisposable tip combinations matched with anappropriate pump volume provides accurate han-dling of aqueous, organic or biological solutionsand suspensions.

Tip spacing. 4 – 16-tip systems offer automaticbetween tip spacing of 9 – 38 mm enabling pick upfrom up to 16, 50-ml vials and transfer directly to two columns of a 96-well plate*. Individual tip con-trol on all systems enables applications such as hit picking and tip length enables use of large liquidvolume containers*.

LASER precision. The Tecan Positioning System (Te-PS™) offers unique refinement of absolute posi-tioning of the pipetting tips over microplates orslides for high density formats such as 1536-wellplates, 864-well crystallization plates. In-processmonitoring and realtime correction of positionalprecision, guarantee reliable unattended operationand comfortable incorporation of the latest assayformats.

Unique selection and upgrade path. Start with li-quid handling only, e.g. sample dilution or platereplication, and upgrade later with robotic manipu-lation, e.g. for full assay automation. Liquid handling expertise. Each liquid channeloffers optimized pipetting parameters for a broadrange of liquid types and volumes, fast liquid level detection, liquid availability check and prefer-ential non-contact dispensing. Aerosol emissionsare contained during disposable tip ejection andTecan fast wash pumps ensure thoroughness andspeed of tip washing are provided.

Precision liquid handling arm. The Freedom EVO’srobotic liquid handling arm combines advancedpipetting precision with reliability and high through-put. It may be equipped with one, two, four oreight tips that access a variety of labware at anypoint on the worktable*. Each liquid-filled positivedisplacement channel transfers liquid volumesfrom source to destination, first detecting andtracking the liquid level to avoid over-submergenceor disturbance of sample pellets or precipitates. Itmay perform mixing cycles in source or destinationand can predilute in the same pipetting stepenabling fast serial dilution sequences. The use oftwo liquid handling arms on one instrumentenables unrivaled throughput and flexibility with16 pipetting channels.

LASER-guided precision positioning. Tecan’s ultra-positioning system (Te-PS™) together with the highprecision liquid handling arm, efficiently andautomatically calibrates all tips throughout theapplication process thus assuring repeatably accurate and reliable pipetting into high densityplate formats such as 1536-well plates and proteincrystallography plates. Even variably-molded dis-posable tips can be calibrated to achieve the high-est positional precision.

Liquid system versatility. The liquid handling armcan be equipped with disposable tips from 10 µl to1000 µl, and washable tips with various chemicallyresistant and biologically appropriate coatings andlengths, as well as dedicated tips for high densityformat pipetting and low-volume and nano-pipet-ting tips down to 10 nl. Freedom EVO’s fast washpumps wash tips efficiently, minimizing carry-overwithout affecting throughput. The range of Te-MO™96 and 384 multichannel head pipetting optionssignificantly raise the throughput of microplate-based assays.

Theworktable may include carriers for tubes,microplates, reagent bottles and troughs as wellas temperature control, shaking, or other processoptions, such as plate readers, washers, magneticand vacuum separation devices.

The high-speed carousel is unmatched in speed for random access of microplates and assorteddisposable tips. One unit can efficiently handle 198microplates, 99 half-height plates or 63 deep-wellplates and may interface to the left or right of theinstrument as standard.

On and off the worktable temperature control is crucial for many molecular biology and ADMETapplications. Tecan Incubators (RT- 65 ºC) can beplaced on the Freedom EVO to provide incubationfor four or six microplates with or without shak-ing, and are ideally suited for ELISA and cell-basedassay applications. Other temperature control carri-ers are available for reagent and media reservoirs,tubes and plates.

Te-VacS™ is an automated solution for vacuum solid-phase extraction. The system can be assembled by the robotic manipulator arm for fully automatedoperations and is ideally suited for DNA / RNAextraction, viral RNA isolation, or compound purifi-cation. Smoothly regulated pressure allows safesample extractions with no contamination.

Te-MagS™ is a powerful magnetic-bead-basedseparation tool for sample purification. Typicalapplications include DNA /RNA or protein purifica-tion as well as cell isolation.

Te-Shake™ is a highly effective shaker that handlesmicroplates, deep-well plates, Eppendorf and PCRtubes with the added option of sample heating ifnecessary.

Genomics. The Freedom EVO series of platformsfully supports nucleic acid extraction and purificationvia vacuum, magnetic-bead-based or centrifugalseparation. Sequencing reaction set-up and PCR set-up, genotyping studies, SNP scoring and spotarray printing are also possible as well as fully auto-mated in situ hybridization or (F)ISH, and immunos-taining of cells or tissue samples on microscopeslide formats.

Tecan’s open collaboration with reagent companies,(e.g. Invitrogen®, Promega®, Millipore®) providesusers with a portfolio of off-the-shelf optimizedsolutions allowing laboratories to choose a range ofkits best suited to their needs with automation atthe appropriate capacity and throughput.

Safety is not an option

User friendly automation with the highest possible safety standards

Individual liquid level detection is quickly deter-mined in tubes, plates or reagent vessels. Presenceor absence of liquid is determined.The system can also establish in advance of sampling if sufficientliquid is present for the requested pipetting step.Error reports can be handled automatically or issuea prompt for user intervention. Clots or particlesin a liquid that obstruct the pipetting tip duringaspiration can be detected and the operatornotified – e.g. during nucleic acid isolation fromwhole blood samples.

Tip detection. Disposable tips are automaticallypicked up and ejected by the arm. Correct tipmounting is monitored by the system to ensureerror-free and safe operation.

Low disposable tip ejector enables disposable tipsto be ejected within a contained environmentthus eliminating cross-contamination from aerosolsgenerated in the tip ejection process.

Automatic Identification of horizontal (e.g. side ofmicroplate) and vertical barcodes (e.g. side of tubeor bottle) ensures sample and reagent integrity.Missing tubes may also be detected.

A fully integrated status lamp clearly shows theworking status of Freedom EVO systems. Even froma remote location, the operator can observe if thesystem is working (green lamp) or requires input orassistance (green lamp changes to red).

Operator and process safety is ensured duringoperation by interlocked screens that protect thework area and prevent unintended interruption.The system can be placed on pause by the operatorand the work area accessed at any time.
