The big leafs on the top of the tank collects water when it rains and it drains into the tank. As the tank fills up, the floatation device inside the tank pushes the lifter rod which in turns lifts the leafs to indicate when the tank is full. As the tank becomes empty from use, the leafs start going down until completely deployed for replenishment.

Rain harvesting is commonly perceived as an operation that needs specific infrastructure like a rooftop, downspout and distribution system. There is a rapidly growing trend of people growing food in public spaces and the use of treated water full of chemicals is the only form of irrigation to nourish these organic gardens.

This project is about creating a way for people to look at rain harvesting in a different way; to encourage people to use rain barrels as a means of irrigation.

How it WorksUrban agriculture experts from Fresh Roots Urban Farm, Victory Gardens, The Edible Garden Project and Shifting Growth all state that rain harvesting is not commonly undertaken in the urban farm setting due to lack of nearby rooftop space. Utixo aims to solve this problem while making the statement that rain harvesting is not something that should be overlooked, even in Vancouver.
