Service of Worship 26 th January 2014 With Revd Dr Kevin Snyman Slide 2 Psalm 27 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh My adversaries and foes they shall stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; Though war rise up against me, yet will I be confident. One thing I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: To live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, and to behold the beauty of the Lord. Slide 10 For the healing of the nations Lord, we pray with one accord for a just and equal sharing of the things that earth affords To a life of love in action help us rise and pledge our word Lead us forward into freedom from despair your world release that, redeemed from war and hatred all may come and go in peace Show us how through care and goodness fear will die and hope increase Slide 11 All that kills abundant living let it from the earth be banned pride of status, race or schooling dogmas that obscure your plan In our common quest for justice may we hallow brief life's span You, Creator God, have written your great name on humankind for our growing in your likeness bring the life of Christ to mind that by our response and service earth its destiny may find Slide 12 Prayers of Confession Slide 13 Readings Isaiah 9:1-4 1 Corinthians 1:10-16 + 17-18 Matthew 4:12-23 + 5:1-11 Slide 14 Slide 15 Antiphon - all Show us your ways O Lord teach us your paths Blest are the poor in spirit For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven Blest are they that mourn For they shall be comforted Slide 16 Blest are the meek For they shall inherit the earth Antiphon all Show us your ways O Lord teach us your paths Blest are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness For they shall be filled Blest are the merciful For they shall obtain mercy Slide 17 Antiphon all Show us your ways O Lord teach us your paths Blest are the pure in heart For they shall see God Blest are the peacemakers For they shall be called Gods children Blest are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake The Kingdom of Heavn is theirs Antiphon - all Slide 18 Sermon Slide 19 David Andrews Be-Attitudes 1) Focus on poor, not status or wealth - Humility 2) Grieve over injustice - Empathy 3) Get angry, not aggressive - Self restraint 4) Seek Justice, not vengeance - Righteousness 5) Extend compassion to all in need - Mercy 6) Be wholehearted in desire to do right - Integrity 7) Work for peace in a world of war - Non-violence 8) Suffer for just causes (Not 'just' war) - Perseverance Slide 20 To quote the Be-Attitudes is religious To act on them is revolutionary Slide 21 Sermon Nekeisha Alexis Baker Higher clergy seduced by political power & economic comfort Said 'yes' to temptation Jesus rejected in wilderness Slide 22 Sermon Practise the Bee-Attitudes Slide 23 Prayers of the People Norman Gatehouse Slide 24 Offering Slide 25 God of freedom, God of justice You whose love is strong as death You who saw the dark of prison You who knew the price of faith Touch our world of sad oppression With your Spirit's healing breath Slide 26 Rid the earth of torture's terror You whose hands were nailed to wood Hear the cries of pain and protest You who shed the tears and blood Move in us the power of pity Restless for the common good Slide 27 Make in us a captive conscience Quick to hear, to act, to plead Make us truly sisters, brothers Of whatever race or creed Teach us to be fully human Open to each other's need Slide 28 Benediction May the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ The love of God And the fellowship of the Holy Spirit Be with us all, forevermore AMEN
