Hempstead Toad Patrol

We expect the toad migration to start shortly as the present milder and damp weather is just how the toads like it. There is already a nightly check on the area. Once the toads start moving towards the pond, could motorists please be aware as they drive in and out of the village that there there may be toads on the road. There will also be Toadwatch volunteers patrolling if the toad signs are out. This year we have enough volunteers to have a full patrol at Selbrigg, taking the pressure off Jenny and Paul who for some years did Selbrigg alone. We are very grateful to these volunteers from Holt, Briston, Hunworth, Cromer and Kettlestone who are joining us to help both at Hempstead and Selbrigg.

Thank you.

NNDC v SSCLG and MackThe High Court has quashed a decision of an Inspector granting permission for a controversial wind turbine, because the Inspector failed to comply with his statutory duty to have special regard to the desirability of preserving the setting of a number of heritage assets which would have been harmed by the turbine.

Permission to appeal was refused by the High Court.

PuzzlesCan you find another fraction that behaves like this?

2 = 26 = 266 = 2666 etc.5 = 65 = 665 = 6665 etc.

Hint: You need only make the first two fractions fit the pattern and all the rest will too!

Dear old Adrian. To describe him as a cantankerous old so and so would not be too far off the mark but he was a man you either loved or hated and, behind that mask of abruptness, he hid a great sense of love, loyalty and, in particular, un-political correctness, art and music.

I only really got to know Adrian and Yvette in 2000 when it was a delight to visit their stone-age habitation in Pond Hills – they were affectionately known as the ‘Babes in the Wood!’ I must admit that with no mains electricity it had a very particular charm. I seem to remember that Eastern Electricity many years ago quoted £70,000 to connect the house to the grid. Adrian sorted them out and, with the help of Russel Harrod and his JCB did the job much cheaper – and soon the floodlights were on. These were not the only lights in Pond Hills. Adrian was a world-class pyromaniac and his firework displays were always a high spot in the calendar – especially on one memorable occasion when he arranged for Steve Benson’s car to catch light in the middle of the performance.

Adrian and Yvette travelled widely and I waited with baited breath for one of their postcards. As you can see from the reproduction below these were a work of art and guaranteed a good 30-minutes work in trying to decipher what they said! Perhaps his pièce de Resistance was his work for the Village Hall and his legacy must be the Hempstead Follies. I had never been on the stage before. I can remember when I had been asked to read the lesson at the Harvest Festival in church quaking at the knees and having to cling onto the lectern. He brought together a very disparate band and taught us to stand up and make fools of ourselves without any fear. And we (and I hope you) enjoyed it – although we were all a bit surprised that his exasperation at our inability to act or remember our lines did not lead to a much earlier demise.

I will miss Adrian very much. It is typical of him that at his Memorial Service we were invited to make donations to the Tibet Relief Fund. Who else would think of taking on the might of the Chinese Republic.

What a lovely Man.

My dear friendsLent – a good spring clean

Lent is often thought of as a rather miserable season in the Church’s year. This simply isn’t true. It is, rather, a time for re-awakening – all around us we see bulbs coming into flower – a promise of spring around the corner. And for us, what is round the corner? Easter. The greatest festival of the year.

Christians really do need to prepare for Easter – Lent and Holy Week give us the opportunity to be ready in heart and mind. How? More attention to daily prayer and Bible reading and by making a real effort to attend weekday Lenten Services. As in former years, we shall have Compline on Wednesday evenings in Lent - all at 7 pm. A warm welcome awaits you. Switch off the TV and spend a little time in quiet, reflective stillness. Each weekday service lasts for about 35 minutes.

God bless you all,

This poem was published in the February 1957 issue of East Anglian Magazine by Diana Spalton’s mother, Joan Watson-Cook.

It was dull in MayWhen I went astrayAnd visited friends down Devonshire way.I didn’t careFor so far from YareAnd only politeness held me there!

But I went to CleyIn early JulyWhen wild rose blushed and the tides were high. The blackbird pipedIn the inland dellsBy Walsingham, Warham and Wighton and Wells.

It rained in JuneWhen I went to Troon(They said it was something to do with the

moon). The chilly sceneWas all grey and green,My only comfort to say I’d been!

So I went to CleyIn early JulyWhen cattle by the Glaven ’mid meadowsweet lieAnd scent of elderIs weaving spellsRound Sheringham, Salthouse and Stiffkey

and Wells.

I’ll always rememberNorth Wales in SeptemberWith sepia peaks in cloud-topped splendour.I looked with aweUpon all I sawAnd my heart fled back to a marsh-fringed shore!

So give me CleyIn early JulyWhen mallow in Morston is banked waist high. And oh! for the taleThe wild tern tellsBy Brancaster, Burnham and Blakeney and Wells!

Adrian TaylorWe were so sorry to hear of Adrian’s death. I have rarely met anyone with a more original and idiosyncratic mind which meant that any conversation always included fascinating diversions. He was one of those refreshing and exciting people who shine in an otherwise undistinguished world.

He will be long remembered – not least by the dullards at County Hall to whom he must have been their best-known and most-feared protester. He will be particularly well remembered by everyone in Hempstead for his long fight against Pond Hills becoming a gravel pit – and extra-well remembered by those of us at Hole Farm who can never be grateful enough for what he and Yvette achieved. Robin Carver

Church LegacyThe Hempstead Church Buildings Trust has been left a legacy of £1000 by the late Mike Culverwell for which the trustees are very grateful. Mike was a churchwarden and Ann was PCC Secretary for many years.

Surveys at Selbrigg PondThe Norfolk Rivers Trust (NRT) have now started to prepare for more restoration work at Selbrigg Pond by trying to gauge the current fish population. The survey was conducted by Econ Ecology with help from NRT. They used a combination of electro-fishing and seine netting to record what species were present and in what numbers. The pond had previously been surveyed in 1999 and will be surveyed again following the restoration work so they can keep an eye on how the fish populations develop.

The surveys were a huge success, and hundreds of fish were caught, identified, measured and released. The vast majority of the fish were roach, with good numbers of perch and pike and a solitary rudd. Tench have recently been caught at the pond – so although none were recorded we know they

are there! No eels were caught but may well have been present in the mud or the reeds.

Separately, Dr Carl Sayer, Ian Patmore and Dave Emson from UCL together with Steve Lambert (SJL Consultancy) have also collected two sediment cores samples from Selbrigg Pond; one is shown in the photo. Average sediment depth is about 60–70 cm and it has a peat base along the sides and more gravelly in the middle.

As a result of the two core samples a full history of pond was captured. There is a fascinating phase likely over a century ago when Dr Sayer suspects that the pond contained a different water plant community (from evidence seen in the sediment structure).

Work is now underway to cut back the reeds and dredge the pond before fish spawning gets underway. Francis Feilden

Film ClubThis month’s film Roxie Hart with Ginger Rogers was a great success. A twenties showgirl confesses for the sake of publicity to a murder of which she is innocent – a farcical show trial ensues where even the judge poses at every photo opportunity. Plenty of laughs here – an inspired choice by our dear Adrian. MT

Events at

Dog PooThe Parish Council have had a couple of complaints about dog poo around the bus shelter, and on the Knoll bank, where the children walk and wait for the school bus. It is very distressing when a child walks in it and has to been cleaned before getting on the bus. We love to see villagers enjoying walking their dogs in our lovely village, but please, keep your dogs under close control so that you can clean up after them should they foul our village verges. Thank you for your co-operation on this matter.

Plumstead NewsPlumstead DefibrillatorFollowing the successful fund raising efforts in Matlaske to purchase a defibrillator for their village, a British Heart Foundation/ EEAS approved Heartstart course was organised earlier this year which we attended. We realised the importance of the first few minutes should you find yourself in a life-saving situation. Consequently we felt it would benefit Plumstead to purchase a defibrillator.

Baconsthorpe Night LifeFinally, a clear night, the stars above Baconsthorpe shining brightly against a dark sky. I took my telescope out of the shed, set it up, switched on the anti-dew heater, attached the dew shield, levelled the mount, aligned the mount with Polaris, dialled in the time, day, date and year and adjusted the mount until Polaris was centred in the cross hairs, corrected the finder alignment, switched on the electric drive motor, aligned the GOTO computer using three known stars, selected a bright star and tested the accuracy, used a hair dryer to demist the corrector plate and was finally ready to start observing, the whole process only taking thirty minutes. I enjoyed a couple of hours of good observing, finding Jupiter, The Orion Nebula, The Great Andromeda Spiral Galaxy and a few other galaxies. Finally the cold drove me back indoors into the warmth and a hot cuppa.

Over my cuppa I remarked to my wife what a good evening it had been and the objects I had so cleverly found. You just can’t beat experience. She replied by switching on her iPad, selecting the Nightsky2 app, and started pointing the iPad around the room without leaving the comfort of the settee. On the screen was shown a very accurate rendition of the night sky, it was like looking at the real sky as she moved it around. Oh look, she said, there is Jupiter, and just to right Mercury and Neptune (both of which I had missed) and Saturn is just below the horizon, should be up in an hour or so. Switches off the app and returns to watching the film.
