(Proud I227, his earliest recorded date), with on reverse “Forwarded by/Olyphant & Co./Hong Kong/14 Nov. 1867” framed h.s. and “Hong Kong/C” c.d.s. (16.11), also showing extremely rare blue “Poste Française/d’Alep” h.s. (for routing through Syria) on front, with “American Legation/Constantinople, Turkey” oval receiving h.s. (12.8.68) in blue at upper right, apparently applied after letter was sent to interior Turkish Empire past Anatolia and subsequently returned to Constantinople (nine months after the first marking on the cover), rated “3/2” (original “2/3” crossed out), original adhesives fell away or were removed before Aug. 1868 Constantinople American Legation receiving handstamp applied over where adhesives had been, fine. Envelope apparently originated in a Treaty Port (or outside Hong Kong) and was noted as having insufficient postage by the Post Office in Hong Kong. After the deficiency was corrected, it was sent off on its journey to interior Turkish Empire beyond Anatolia in search of Dr. Nutting, the addressee, who apparently was not found, so the letter was ultimately returned to the American Legation in Constantinople. Only one cover had previously been recorded from Hong Kong showing the “Poste Française/d’Alep” handstamp: an 1859 envelope to Mrs. Nutting, care of David Nutting at Diarbekir, Turkey (“Mosaic”, Interasia, 1.8.2010, lot 1733. It has been surmised that the cover was from a missionary in China to another missionary in the Near East. An extraordinary insufficiently paid cover showing this important handstamp, apparently from a Treaty Port to extremely rare interior Asian Turkish Empire destination.

Gripsholm Repatriation Ship” which was blacked out by the Canadian authorities, showing “Postage Free/Prisoner of War Mail/c/o Japanese Red Cross/Tokyo” h.s., censor tape at right and Japanese censor h.s. and chop both in red, very scarce non-accepted “Gripsholm” mail that was instead sent through normal channels. The sender was under the mistaken impression that since the addressee was the wife of a government official, the sender could send mail via the “Gripsholm”, a neutral Swedish vessel used by agreement between the Allies and the Japanese as an exchange vessel for mail to interned diplomats and senior military officers. In addition, the letter was too late for its first voyage and too early for its second.

With the requisitioning of a number P&O ships for the Crimean War, the bi-monthly P&O Galle to China service was reduced to once a month, beginning with the ship that would have normally left Bombay Nov. 16, 1854 for Galle and China, and the P&O’s Calcutta - Hong Kong line was officially designated to carry mail to fill the gap.
