CONNECTING YOUR MACHINE TO THE POWER SUPPLY: (230V)To eliminate the possibility of an electric shock your machine has been fitted with a BSapproved, non rewireable moulded plug and cable which incorporates a fuse, the valueof which is indicated on the pin face of the plug. Should the fuse need to be replaced an

approved BS1362 fuse must be used of the same rating, marked thus .The fuse cover is detachable, never use the plug with the cover omitted. If a replacementfuse cover is required, ensure it is of the same colour as that visible on the pin face of theplug (i.e. red). Fuse covers are available from your Draper Tools stockist. If the fitted plug is not suitable, it should be cut off and destroyed. *The end of the cableshould now be suitably prepared and the correct type of plug fitted. See below.

*WARNING:A plug with bare flexible wires exposed is hazardous if engaged in a live power socketoutlet.

WARNING:THIS APPLIANCE MUST BE EARTHED.Green & Yellow - Earth, Blue - Neutral, Brown - Live.As these colours may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying theterminals in your plug, proceed as follows:The wire which is coloured green & yellow must be connected to the terminal in the plugwhich is marked with the letter ‘E’ or by the earth symbol or coloured green orgreen and yellow. The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal which is marked withthe letter ‘N’ or coloured black or blue. The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to the terminal which is markedwith the letter ‘L’ or coloured red or brown.N.B. OPERATION & USE

MITRE GUIDEMost cross cut work, especially with smallpieces of material are more easily controlledwith the aid of the mitre guide . The guideis graduated to 45˚ for assistance in cuttingboth left and right hand angles. Fig.13.

RIP FENCETrue straight line rip cutting is best done byguiding the work against the rip fence .The fence can also be used for cutting offexact widths. Fig.14.WARNING: The supporting surface where theband saw is mounted, should be examinedcarefully after mounting to ensure that there isno movement during use. If any tipping orwalking is noted, secure the workbench orsupporting surface before operatingbandsaw.

CIRCLE CUTTING ATTACHMENTThe circle cutting attachment mounts onthe arm of the upper guide block .Accurate circles can be cut out with a radiusof 50mm - 200mmMake the first cut to the perimeter of thecircle freehand before setting the pivot pin

of the attachment into the work. The pivotpin must be aligned exactly to the right of theblade tips. If the pivot is too far back, theblade will run outside the desiredcircumference. If too far forward, the bladewill run inside.

USING YOUR BANDSAW AS A POWER BELTSANDERRemove the blade and fit a sanding belt as explained in CHANGING BLADES(page10).However, make sure that the blade supportbearings and the blade guides, both upperand lower, are well clear of the abrasivesanding belt. Two sanding stops are available, one straight and one slightly curved. Screwthe stop into the threaded hole in theworktable near the table insert with the hexscrews provided with the sanding kit. Adjustthe stop so that the belt just rests against it.

TIPS ON USING YOUR BANDSAW

WORKTABLEThe worktable is a 400x400mmaluminium die-casting. It supports thematerial being cut and is grooved toaccept a mitre guide and rip fence. Therip fence can be attached to both thefront and rear of the table. The table canbe tilted to every angle from 0-45°making possible a large variety of beveland compound angle cuts. The tiltindicator beneath the table shows theangle setting. The centre of theworktable is protected with a tableinsert, easily and economically replacedif damaged.

SAWDUST EXTRACTION OUTLETIt is recommended that this is used. Itcan be connected to a vacuum cleanerwhich will provide fast and efficientremoval of sawdust from your machine. The vacuum cleaner may be usedcontinuously or intermittently dependingupon your requirements.

INTERNAL CONSTRUCTIONThe three wheel construction of thisbandsaw makes possible the 360mmthroat and 140mm depth of cut capacitywithin a compact bench mounted unit. The drive wheel is powered by a beltfrom the motor pulley. Both the drivewheel and the idler wheel are fixed inposition and do not require adjustment. The tracking wheel can be adjusted tocentre the blade on the three wheelswhen running. Because of the self-tensioning feature of this bandsaw, frequent tracking adjustments are notrequired. Each wheel is fitted with a rubber tyre toprevent the blade from slipping and toprotect the sharp edges of the bladeteeth. These tyres are easily replaced ifthey become torn or worn.

TIPS ABOUT BANDSAW BLADESThe size of a band saw blade is denotedby width, length and thickness. Thisbandsaw uses blades which are 1785mmlong, 0.4mm thick and from 6 - 13mmwide. The number of teeth per inch andthe type of tooth determines theapplication of the blade.A wide choice of blades are availablefor different applications. There is nogeneral purpose bandsaw blade whichis suitable for all operations. Narrowblades will cut to a tighter radius thanwider blades. Finer toothed blades willmake a smoother, but slower, cut thancoarse blades. As a wide blade hasmore contact with the blade guides, it iseasier to cut a true straight line than witha narrow blade. This is particularlyimportant in rip-cutting when the bladehas a natural tendency to follow thegrain of the wood.Blades for cutting hard materials havemore teeth per inch. For cutting thinhard materials, the number of teeth perinch needs to be much greater than forthe thicker material. If the distancebetween each tooth is greater than thethickness of the material being cut, theteeth may grab in the work and breakoff. The following chart shows recommendedblade widths for cutting curves.

Width of Blade Min. Radius of Curve

6mm10mm

13mm25mm

Since it is nearly impossible toresharpen blades, discard all bluntblades. Never attempt to use a bent orcracked blade.

Page 15: 360mm BANDSAW · 2018-08-03 · 360mm BANDSAW STOCK No.36761 PART No.BS355A • INSTRUCTIONS • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY TO ENSURE THE SAFE AND EFFECTIVE

TIPS ON USING YOUR BANDSAW

- 14 -

For all cutting operations the upperblade guard should be adjusted to justclear the work being cut (approx. 3mmor 1⁄8"). Not only does this provide thebest operator safety, but it also bringsthe blade guides closer to the workgiving more accurate results and easiercontrol.Use both hands to feed the workpieceinto the blade. The work must be heldflat on the table at all times to preventbinding of the blade. Use a steady evenpressure just sufficient to keep the bladecutting at full speed.Always use a rip fence or mitre guidewhere possible to eliminate anysideways slip of the work. This is mostimportant when the table is tilted to anangle.Always plan work ahead. Thetradesmans’ rule is “measure twice, cutonce”. It is best to finish a cut in onecontinuous operation, but frequentlybacktracking will be necessary. Turn offthe motor and allow the blade to cometo a complete stop before backing theblade out of the cut.Remember that the blade removesmaterial during the cut. This gap createdby the blade is called the kerf and mustbe allowed for when cutting to exactsizes. Plan your cut so that the kerf is tothe scrap side of the line you wish to cut.If necessary, allow a little more for finishsanding.

RIP SAWINGThis term refers to the cutting of timberwith the grain rather than across thegrain. You can rip wood freehand to apreviously drawn line, but best resultsare obtained by using the rip fence. Ifthe table is level, set the rip fence to theleft hand side of the blade. This allowsyou to use your right hand to hold thework firmly against the fence. The widthof cut indicator on the front of theworktable shows the distance betweenthe blade and the right hand edge of thetimber. When cutting a bevel rip, with the tabletilted at any angle up to 45˚, set the ripfence to the right hand side of the bladeif the width of the workpiece allows it.With the fence on the downhill side of

the table it will help support the workagainst slip. The width of cut indicatorshows the distance between the bladeand the rip fence at the table surface.

CROSS CUTTINGThis term refers to the cutting of timberacross the grain. This type of cut can alsobe made freehand or with the aid of themitre guide. The mitre guide can beadjusted to a 45˚ angle to assist duringmitre cuts, and with compound mitrecuts.Make sure the work is held firmlyagainst the table and against the face ofthe mitre guide. Be careful to keep yourfingers away from the blade, particularlyat the end of the cut.

FREEHAND SAWINGThe ease with which many different andvaried shapes can be cut is one of themost important features of the bandsaw.Select a blade suitable for cutting thesmallest radius in the work you haveplanned. When freehand cutting always feed thework slowly so that the blade can followthe line you wish to saw. Make sure notto drag the work off line forcing theblade sideways, or twisting it.In many cases, it is helpful to rough cutabout 6mm away from the line in difficultcurves and corners. In the case of verysharp curves which may be too tight forthe blade, make relief cuts onto the faceof the curve so that these scraps will fallas the final radius is sawn.

CUTTING NONFERROUS METALSMetal must only be cut at the lowestspeed on your bandsaw. Never attemptmetal sawing at wood cutting speed -your blade will burn up very quickly.Other than speed and correct bladeselection, metal sawing is much thesame as wood sawing, however, the rateat which you feed the work into theblade must be reduced to only as fast asthe blade can cut. Also, metals do not have the ‘give’ thattimber has, so the work must be heldvery firmly to prevent twisting ormisalignment of the blade whilefeeding.

MAINTENANCECHANGING TYRESEventually the rubber tyres on the bandsaw wheels will wear due to the constant contact ofthe sharp teeth of the blade. Remove the blade, lift the edge of the tyre with a smallscrewdriver and the tyre can be worked off the wheel easily. We recommend that the threetyres be changed at the same time. (See Spare Parts Listing/Drawing). Refit blade

BLADE GUIDESBlade guides should be inspected regularly for wear or chipping. When replacing guidesreplace all guides at the same time, both upper and lower. (See Spare Parts Listing/Drawing).

BEARINGSAll bearings used in the construction of your bandsaw and its motor are sealed andlubricated for life.

CLEAN OUTAccumulated dust and chips should be removed from inside the bandsaw frequently.Disconnect from the power supply, remove the front cover and use a brush or vacuumcleaner. At the end of every work session clean sawdust away from the motor vents.

BLADE BRUSHEnsure that you check on a regular basis that the brush is in full contact with the bandsawblade and wheel. This will help to keep the tyres on the wheel clean and assist with the quickand smooth run down of the bandsaw blade.NOTE: Bandsaw blade should stop within 10 seconds of the machine being switched off asper original set up.
