Regional New Year’s Eve Parties Host or Hostess Wanted!

As most of you know by now, SOS sponsors regional dinners the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The parties are held in various locations hosted by members who open their homes, provide the beverages and invite members to come to dinner. Guests contribute $15 to cover expenses and bring a dish to share. The Social Committee is initiating a similar holiday event for December 31, New Year’s Eve. This New Year's Eve event will be more of an appetizer and dessert party with food coordinated by the host. We are looking for host/esses to hold an evening party so that folks can gather and ring in the New Year closer to home than if there were a central SOS event. If the host chooses to lend the floor for a P.J.party with breakfast, that would be great. The goal is to offer a regional fun time and reduce drive time on the highway. As SOS moves into its winter activities, I am looking forward to continuing to work with all of you as your Commodore. Make December 12 and 13 your December weekend in Annapolis. Saturday evening you can watch the Eastport Yacht Club Light Parade and then warm up at the casual holiday party at the Cape St.

Claire club house. Sunday morning is Brunch with Janie Meneely entertaining us with Chesapeake songs and stories. On Christmas Day two of our members are opening their homes to SOS members for a family-style holiday dinner with everyone bringing their favorite dish. These smaller gatherings are a great way to get to know your fellow sailors better. Check the Fleet Exercises section for upcoming activities such as Fireside Chats and the Awards Dinner Dance in January. The Board and Chairs will be having an off-site meeting in early December and are busy planning for the Spring Training in March and the 2016 sailing season. Committees are always looking for helpers and new ideas. As you probably have gathered from my columns it takes a village to organize SOS events. Please volunteer! Multiple kudos go to Pete Stogis for holding a series of classes so that SOS bareboat skippers can qualify for the International Proficiency Certificate, which is now required by the charter companies in the Mediterranean. Thank you to Bob Lucas, who organized the Halloween Party, which was a great success.

The team that made the arrangements for the Cruising Wrap Up meeting – Steve Deller, Harry Keith, Debbie Goldberg, Laura Gwinn, Kelly Kelly, Lola Cobb, Richard Green, Peggy Green, Brian Hanks, Judy Crews Hanks, Kitty St. Romain, and Dennis Krizek - deserve a special thank you. The Cruising Committee members – Coordinators, Skippers, and First Mates - lead by Mike Pittinger and Peggy Green - have worked hard to bring SOS another outstanding sailing season on the Chesapeake. Thank you all for your efforts! You are what makes SOS the great organization it is!

Commodore: The old Board was thanked for their service. The new Board was seated and officers elected. Commodore requests that committee chairs meet with new Board on December 5th for a working session. The online Event Calendar will now become the “official calendar” of the club. Vice Commodore: Preparations are underway for Cruising wrap-up. Treasurer: Based on the Income and Expenses so far compared to last year, we will probably not have as good a bottom line as we had at the end of last year, but we have planned for increases in revenue for next year without increasing dues. We should end 2015 with a profit, just not quite as robust as the prior 2 years. Bareboat: Eight boats have been chartered for the Greek Island cruise. There will be a crew gathering on November 22. Proposal presented to arrange for discount for Bareboat Coordinators. Brunches: First Brunch of the season is November 15 with Grant Walker from the USNA Model Museum as speaker; there will be a food drive at this Brunch. December speaker will be music presented byJanie Meneely. January speaker will be from The Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The February regional brunches have been advertised. Actively looking for a new Brunch Chair for next year. Cruising: No report. Database: Membership renewal was activated Nov 1, 2015 at 12:00 pm when the proper forms were linked to the website. Renewal reminders will be sent Dec 1, Jan 1 and Jan 24. Out of 75 mailed ballots 17 were returned. The election committee met on Oct 8 and the results sent to the commodore. The entire membership was told of the results Oct 8. Candidate has withdrawn his name for consideration as the new Database chair. Education: No report First Mates: Rita Svec has completed her First Mate renewal. Beth Dumesco and Elizabeth Hubley are going into First Mate Emeritus Status. Looking for a new First Mate Advisory Committee chair. Membership: One skipper and one member have joined this past month. Newsletter: Ninety-eight copies of the October 16-page Whisker Pole were mailed to 79 members and 19 issues to Happy Hour coordinators at a cost of $360.00, which was $3.67 per copy. Public Relations: No report. Safety: Continue to activate boats as they qualify. Skippers Advisory: No report. Social: Mostly positive feedback from Halloween Party. Thanksgiving Parties are almost full. The Cape St. Claire Clubhouse has been reserved for the After Parade of Lights Party on Dec 12th

Upcoming Brunches By Carole Jordan, Brunch Chair

Dress in your best holiday finery (drag out that old sweater!) and join us to celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and even Festivus! But especially we will celebrate this great club and our beloved Chesapeake Bay. Our special musical guest is Janie Meneely, who brings her songs and stories about Bay people, places and traditions to us with a special holiday twist. The brunch will be held on December 13 at the Doubletree Hotel in Annapolis. Join us for that special holiday “cheer” at 11:00 a.m., with

brunch at noon. Register by Monday, December 7 to avoid the late fee.

Our January guest speaker will be John Page Williams, Senior Naturalist for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. His topic is Captain John Smith and the Chesapeake Bay. He is a fabulous speaker and we are lucky to have him join us. The Brunch will again be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Annapolis, but the date is very special! It is on January 24, which is the morning after the Awards Banquet. Special rates are being offered for sleeping rooms at the Doubletree to accommodate out-of -towners. Make a weekend of it!! We are actively looking for hosts/hostesses for the February 14 regional brunches. Similar to the Regional Thanksgivings, we are planning to gather in members’ homes for socializing and brunching. Whether you can accommodate 10 or 25, please contact Carole Jordan, [email protected] to volunteer. There will be a fee charged to attendees to defray some of your costs.

You Ought to be in Pictures—The 2015 Photo Contest

Have you taken stellar shots of this year’s SOS activities? Now is the time to enter the 2015 Photo Contest. There are only six simple rules: 1. Each photo must identify at which SOS event it was taken and the name of the photographer. 2. Entries must be taken at an SOS event in 2015 by the member of SOS submitting the photo. A photo does not necessarily have that event as a theme (a picture of Annie Anchorage at a raft-up or the sunset seen from a raft-up is acceptable, even though there is nothing in the picture to prove that it was taken at a raft-up or cruise.) We are on the “Honor System”. An official SOS event can be cruising, day-sail, a brunch, seminar, destination cruise, etc. Happy Hours are not included. 3. The photo entries must be received by 12:00 (midnight) December 15, 2015. Photos received after the deadline will not be judged. 4. This is an amateur photographer contest. Professional photographers - i.e. anyone who earns more than 50 percent of his or her annual income from photography – are excluded from the contest. 5. Each member may submit up to a total of eight (8) photos. 6. Photos may be edited to achieve color balance that reflects the scene as you observed it. Cropping is also acceptable. Heavily manipulated photos are not eligible. Categories: People, Places, Bay scenes (including sunsets), Sailboats (sailboats under sail, raft-ups), and SOS Abroad

(destination cruises). In the last category, only photos taken during the actual SOS destination cruises are acceptable. For example, photos of/from the chartered boats and in towns visited are acceptable. Photos taken on days when traveling prior to or after a destination cruise will be put in the Places category. Other Useful information: Submit your photos in digital format: mail a disk or send photos attached to emails. Photos must be submitted in the highest possible resolution. The photos will be enlarged to 5” x 7”, so if the photo is fuzzy, it reduces your chance of winning. Photos not submitted in the 5” x 7” format will be cropped to that format. Judging: The photo contest managers will put your photos in the correct category. There are 5 categories with 1st, 2nd & 3rd in each; plus 1 overall Grand Prize. The judge for the contest is local professional photographer Don Dement. The judging will be blind, so the judge will not know which photographer took any given photo. SEND Photo Entries to: [email protected] (please do not send entries to our personal emails.) OR Nancy and John Parsons, SOS Photo Contest Managers 1314 Homewood Lane, Annapolis, MD 21401 Start reviewing your 2015 photo archives! Don’t miss the deadline.

Awards, Awards, and More Awards! At the January 23 Awards Dinner Dance, SOS will recognize four members for their significant contributions of time, energy and talent (the serious member recognition awards) to our all-volunteer Club. Members will also be recognized for contributing whimsical, good-natured humor through their foibles, bloopers, and flim flams (the Jibe Ho awards). The photographers among us will also be recognized, and there are awards for various categories, such as boats, sunrises/sunsets, and people. (See article on page 10 for further details about photo contest.) So, What Are The Serious Awards? Commodore’s Award: The Board of Directors established the annual Commodore’s award so that the highest ranking officer of the Club could extend public recognition and many thanks to an individual who has made significant contributions in fostering the goals of Singles on Sailboats, and who continues to contribute to many aspects of the Club. Nominations for the award are accepted from the general membership. Ed Klein Member of the Year Award: Singles on Sailboats owes its beginnings to Ed Klein. He co-sponsored the first rafts of two or three boats, the first brunches, the first social gatherings. But Ed offered more. He would teach you to sail without regard for your past experience or future expectations. Ed would take you aboard his boat, The Mai Kai, give you the helm, and develop your skills. He would challenge you to extend your horizons. He was one of those unique individuals who shared his joy of sailing with you. Ed sailed beyond this world in 1987. Nominations for the award come from the general membership. Elinor W. “Elli” Abramson Award for Contributions to SOS Education Programs: Eli Abramson created many new educational programs for the members of Singles on Sailboats. After serving on the Board of

Directors for two years, she gradually built an all-encompassing education program that provides the opportunity to broaden one’s knowledge of sailing at minimal cost. She transformed the spring education program so that it attracts more participants than any other SOS event. Elli sailed beyond this world in 1992. Nominations are accepted from the general membership, and the Education Committee Chairperson(s) recommends the recipient. Rookie of the Year Award: Singles on Sailboats attracts many new sailors each year. The Board of Directors established the annual Rookie of the Year Award to recognize the individual who, in his or her first year sailing with SOS, demonstrates superior interest in and learning about sailing, and who becomes highly involved in one or more of the many SOS programs. Nominations for the award come from the general membership. Nominations should include background and/or justification for each of the Recognition Awards, as well as for the Jibe Ho Awards. Nominations for the four Member Recognition awards should be sent to Laura Gwinn at [email protected] no later than January 5, 2016; January 12th for the Jibe Ho Awards, all of which will be presented at the January 23, 2016 ‘Winter Wonderland” Awards Dinner Party.

Winter Wonderland Awards Dinner January 23, 2016  ‐ Annapolis DoubleTree Hotel

The very popular band, Kaleidoscope (they played at 2015 Seafood Festival), will be the musical entertainment, and, of course, the annual awards will be presented! There will be a nice menu selection and a cash bar. This is our very special Awards Dinner, so be sure to dress to impress! There is also an SOS Sunday Brunch scheduled at the DoubleTree Hotel the next day in case members want to stay overnight for that. Anyone wishing to stay overnight will have to make their own reservations at a rate of $119 per room.

SOS Membership

SOS Bank Balance - Oct 31

Welcome New Members

Cruising Wrap-up Despite the lack of cooperation by the weather gods during September and October, SOS skippers and crew spent a total of 1355 days on the Chesapeake Bay in the 2015 sailing season! Day sails continue in high demand with 22 skippers sailing for 54 days and 167 crew days on the water. Joe Lombardo and Dennis Krizek each sailed six day sails. Henry Weisenberg was the most active crew member sailing 11 times. Many day sailors are new to both sailing and SOS so the assistance of First Mates Dean Collins, Elizabeth Hubley, and Lorraine Fassett was especially appreciated. Weekend sails drew 56 skippers sailing for 348 days with Ron Pence, once again, sailing the most weekends – 12. Dean Collins and Richard Ramsden were the most active among the 12 First Mates who participated in Bay cruising this year. Of the 786 crew days, Dan Duvall, Shirley Brooks Hollendursky and Jody Hutchinson spent the most days on the water. More than 60 skippers, first mates and coordinators spent part of a Saturday at the Wrap-Up meeting and lunch. This provided an opportunity to discuss what went well during the cruising season and made suggestions for changes in the future. Cruising is a big committee that is always looking for more volunteers. Anyone who is interested in the committee should contact Laura Gwinn, Vice Commodore, at [email protected].

Two First Mates Emeritus Status

By Kitty St. Romain, First Mate Advisory Chair

As outgoing First Mate Advisory (FMA) Chair, I want to express the Club's appreciation to two First Mates, Beth Dumesco and

Elizabeth Hubley, who are changing their status to First Mate Emeritus (FME). Both these sailors have contributed over the years by assisting new skippers to become familiar with SOS procedures, helping train

less experienced crew, and providing support to skippers as requested. You who may not be aware of that the Emeritus designation is a recognition of at least 10 years of service and expertise which a FM has dedicated to the club. FM Emeritus members do contribute the fee to sail as regular crew members when they sail. The FME status entitles those people to attend the Kick Off and Wrap Up events and the annual FM Gathering where a variety of subjects are discussed, suggestions raised and lessons learned are assessed. This status enables FM members, who for whatever reason, choose to no longer participate as active FMs, to continue to have links with the other members of the FM community and continue to share their expertise. Beth Dumesco served as twice as FMA Committee Chair, FM Candidate Coordinator (two terms), and FMA Committee member. She also wrote: How to Become an SOS First Mate, The Candidacy Self-Evaluation Form, and The Candidacy Resume Form. Elizabeth Hubley was a First Mate for almost twenty years serving two years as Co-chair with Brian Hanks for First Mate Advisory. She led the Spring Training Day events. She also contributed suggestions on a wide variety of subjects, always offered solid ideas at Kick Off and Wrap Up FM sessions and could be depended on for common sense and carefully planned leadership on every cruise. Please make sure to thank these women for their contribution to the Club the next time you see them.

Creativity at Halloween Party

By Barbara Shoemaker, Social Committee

The Halloween Party topped off a beautiful sailing weekend with 16 boats sailing to St Michaels and back. The party was held in at Miles River Yacht Club with wonderful food and a great DJ, Chris Startt. The judges had a difficult time deciding on which costumes were stand outs, and laughed among themselves that everyone deserved a prize this year! The individual winners were the pumpkin Peggy Green, a flashing Caitalina Beth Dumesco, leprechaun Bob Lucas, Sheik Jim Huber, misty rain cloud Lorraine Panaccio, Beam ‘em Up Scotty Russ Dedrickson, Forest Nymph Rhona Reiss, Viking Jim Randall, and Ice Queen Pam Ledford. The pair winners were Deer in the Headlights Juanita Layne and Bruce Dowley and Skipper’s Nightmare with Suzanne Ziska and Ray Harris. Group winners were a red and green shipping channel with Steve Craig, Carole Jordan, MeepsYoxand Debra Roane, Odyseus and his Sirens with Dan and Teeja Meier, Rita Svec, Marge Stembel and Lynn Gilley, and the

Emcee and Social Chair, Bob Lucas Three Blind Mice with

Ursula Skagan, Kathy Higdon, and Jean Gough. What a creative group SOS is!
