“No act of
kindness, no
matter how small,
is ever wasted.”
~ Aesop
As we enter into the wonderful month of November with its cooler nights and fading leaves, we pause for a moment to reflect on what is really important this season. The NHES staff is thankful for each and every child that walks through our doors each morning. They bring with them their smiles, their stories, their warmth and, of course, their unique spirits. We are so grateful for the opportunity to share their magical journey of elementary
school with them each and every day. Happy Thanksgiving!
Being Thankful
A big thank you goes out to all our wonderful parent volunteers who came out to help with
open house this year. What better way to share our school with prospective parents than
to hear it straight from you? So, thank you Wendy Yamano, Carol Anne Durham, CJ
Peed, Reem Abdalla and Kathryn Ciarrocca for taking the time to be here for open
house. We are currently accepting applications for kindergarten for the next year. Our re-
enrollment for current families will take place in February. Help us spread the word that we
do have openings to any interested families. They may contact Ms. Jane or Ms. Tammy to
arrange a school visit.
Open House/Enrollment
The November 4th First Friday is being sponsored by Junior Scout Troop #431 headed by
Christy Branco and Bonnie Rochester. They will be collecting canned goods to bring to
Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, so please bring in your donation on Friday morning . While
you’re here, don’t forget to enjoy a doughnut, cup of coffee or some hot chocolate. Grade 4
scouts are Sydney Lee, Dani Yates, Maria McKnight, Abby Branco, Margot Roches-
ter, Sophia Bradford and Cassie Crisp. Thank you girls!

“Gratitude unlocks
the fullness of life. It
turns what we have
into enough, and
more. It turns denial
into acceptance,
chaos to order,
confusion to clarity.
It can turn a meal
into a feast, a house
into a home, a
stranger into a
friend. Gratitude
makes sense of our
past, brings peace
for today, and
creates a vision for
tomorrow .”
~Melody Beattie
Parent Game Day Ms. Jill would like to thank all the parents for arranging their schedules to come out for
parent game day. It is always a fun-filled day for all!

Innisbrook Update Thank you… Thank you… Thank you! With 93% of our school population participating,
the school was able to raise $5962.00! Thank you to everyone who sold gift wrap or
made a donation to the school. Part of those funds are being used to upgrade our com-
puting network system, thus allowing our students to access online resources, curricu-
lum and research at much faster speeds. Our wonderful kindergarten came in 1st place
and was treated to an ice cream party. First place winner was fourth grader Watson
Sloan, who won $100.00 in cold cash, Maggie Meyer, kindergartener, who won
$50.00, and Graham Peterson, grade 2, came in third winning $25.00. We cannot
forget our wonderful school coordinator for this fund raiser - Joyce Patsalos! THANK
YOU JOYCE!
Festival of Trees
New Horizons students will be participating in the community-wide
Festival of Trees, organized by the Wilmington Ballet Company and
the Minnie Arts Center. A significant portion of the proceeds will
benefit the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Care Center. NHES will
sponsor a tree for display in the Minnie Evans Art Center located
between Ashley High School and Murray Middle School. You can visit
www.capefearfestivaloftrees.org for more information.
Book Fair Do you know that we have a fall book fair approaching? NHES
will hold 2 book fairs this year, the first one being a great oppor-
tunity to purchase books in time for the holidays. We send an
advance thank you out to Carol Anne Durham and Beth
Davis for offering to work and coordinate the fall book fair
which runs from November 28th through December 2nd.

New Horizons, as a member school of the Wilmington Association of Independent and Religious Schools, is sponsoring
two parenting workshops this month by the nationally renowned speaker, Dr. Michael Thompson. Dr. Thompson is a
psychologist, school consultant, and author or co-author of eight books, including the
New York Times bestseller, "Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys,"
"Speaking of Boys: Answers to the Most-Asked Questions about Raising Sons" and
"Best Friends, Worst Enemies: Understanding the Social Lives of Children."
His newest book, "It's a Boy!: Understanding Your Son's Development from Birth to
Eighteen was published by Ballantine Books in March of 2008. A dedicated speaker
and traveler, Dr. Thompson has spoken at or consulted to more than 500 schools in
the U.S. and abroad. He has appeared on the Today Show, the Oprah Winfrey Show,
ABC 20/20 and CBS 60 Minutes. He was the co-author, host and narrator of a two-
hour PBS documentary entitled "Raising Cain: Focus on Boys" which aired in January of 2006.
Dr. Thompson will be presenting a session for parents on Monday, November 14 from 7:00-8:30 pm at Cape Fear
Academy based on his book “Best Friends/Worst Enemies”. This session will focus on the social skills of children, social
cruelty, popularity, and friendship. The presentation will address questions like:
What do social relationships in school predict about happiness in adult life?
Why do cliques form and what are the differences between boy and girl friendship groups?
Why are some children singled out negatively in social relationships?
What is the normal sequence of child friendships from the preschool stage through adolescence?
On Tuesday, November 15 from 8:30-10:00 am, Dr. Thompson will present a session entitled “How to Raise Respon-
sible Children” for parents. This session will also be held at Cape Fear Academy. Dr. Thompson mixes personal stories
with his clinical experience and research on the outcomes of different parenting styles to provide a “recipe” for providing
children with a strong foundation for moral behavior even during the difficult middle and high school years.
There is no admission charge for either of these programs, and you may attend either or both. We are looking forward
to a large turnout. The community will also be invited, so feel free to invite your friends and family. We hope to see
you there!

Spanish Instruction ¡Hola! ¿Hablas Español? Your child does! Ms. Maria Elena has been working hard to
have all of our students perfect their Spanish skills. Maria Elena comes to NHES with
18 years of teaching experience and a Master’s in Education. We were amazed to find
out that she has taught in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Louisiana, California and our
very own Durham. Many days she is astounded by NHES student’s work ethic.
Thank you so much for being helpful with our schedule.
Remember fourth and fifth grade parents that your chil-
dren are the last ones dismissed in the afternoons, so
please time your pick-up accordingly even if you have
younger children. At drop-off in the morning, it would be
ideal if everyone would pull up to the front door and not
stop at the staff parking lot to drop off children. Once a
few cars get backed up, it becomes a problem on College
Road for subsequent cars trying to get into the parking lot. NHES students are taught
by classroom teachers to always use the ramp ways instead of walking through the
teacher’s parking lot for their own safety.

Character
Theme This month all of our classes will be discussing

qualities that make us unique as individuals.

A huge thank you to the Nye family for welcoming everyone on our early morning bus ride in the Steinmart parking lot with hot coffee and yummy muffins. What a nice surprise to send us off!
Have time in your day to make a difference in the life of a child? We cer-tainly do here at NHES… we thank Joanna Clancy, Emily Becker’s grandmother, for creating an exciting hands-on lesson with our budding scientists in first grade on crystal formations.
Liquid to solid? No problem in fourth grade. Thank you to Christian Nye for preparing a dynamic lesson on mixing yummy liquids to create ice cream described by one student as “My taste buds just went to heaven!”
A special thanks to the following Innisbrook fundraising helpers:
Kathryn Webster, Allison Hanson, Nancy Cunningham, Lucy West, Sue Butler, Kris Testori and Joyce Patsalos.
Don’t forget to continue collecting those
empty Capri Sun pouches! You may
