Mission of SOAP The purpose of this Society is to provide a forum for discussion of medical problems unique to the peripartum period and to promote excellencein medical care, research and education in anesthesia, obstetrics, and neonatology.

Mission of SOAP Program CommitteeThe mission of the Society’s Program Committee is to provide anesthesiologists, obstetricians, and other physicians and members of relatedallied health specialities with the knowledge that will reinforce past learning as well as disseminate new concepts, practices, and skills involvinganesthesia and analgesia for the pregnant woman.

Goals of the SOAP 2005 ProgramEducational Format

CME activities may include the following formats: Plenary sessions, debates, lectures, poster discussions, oral abstracts, problem-based learning,and skill-set workshop.

Participants in the SOAP 2005 ProgramAttendance shall be open to all health practitioners, provided that they have registered for the meeting. CME credit will only be offered to MDs,DOs or equivalent. A Verification of Participation form must be turned in to SOAP at the conclusion of the meeting. The form will be availablein the meeting syllabus and online following the meeting.

To provide ongoing CME activities designed to teach our audience how to best provide analgesia for labor and anesthesia for cesareandelivery and other procedures during pregnancy and postpartum period;To provide an Annual Scientific Meeting to the members as a forum for discussion that includes the opportunity for expression of newclinical insights, presentation of research in progress with discussion of ways to enhance that research, clinical applications of research andcourses that will enhance the practice of obstetrical anesthesiology;To provide a forum for discussions dealing with specific issues that will enhance the effectiveness and cost efficiency of obstetrical anesthesiaand analgesia;To provide information and a forum for discussion on subjects which have been requested by members of the previous annual meeting andvia needs assessment requests.

Meeting ObjectivesWorkshop on Neonatal Resuscitation Program

After completing this course, participants will learn how to dothe following:

Changes in physiology that occur when a baby is born.Describe the steps to follow during newborn resuscitation.Identify the risk factors that can help predict which babies willrequire resuscitation.Demonstrate the correct use of resuscitation equipment andpersonnel.Open the airway and provide the initial steps of resuscitation.Resuscitate newborns when meconium is present.When to give bag-and-mask ventilation.Correct placement of masks on the newborn's face.Evaluate the success of bag-and-mask ventilation.When to begin and end chest compressions during aresuscitation.Coordinate chest compressions with positive-pressureventilation.When and why endotracheal intubation is needed duringresuscitation.Use the endotracheal tube to suction meconium from the trachea.Use the endotracheal tube to administer positive-pressureventilation.When to give medications during a resuscitation.Administer epinephrine through an: endotracheal tube, umbilicalvein.When and how to administer IV fluids intravenously during aresuscitation.When and how to administer sodium bicarbonate to correctacidosis during a resuscitation.Subsequent management of the baby who has requiredresuscitation.Ethical considerations about starting and stopping resuscitation.How the principles in the program can be applied to babies whorequire resuscitation beyond the immediate newborn period oroutside the hospital delivery room.

To discuss pain during birth in animals and humans, its neural basisand short- and long-term consequences and how genetic andhormonal factors alter pain after delivery and its long-termconsequences.

Discuss the new concepts in the field of general obstetrics fromthe calendar year 2004.Discuss the implications of new obstetric research for thepracticing obstetric anesthesiologist.
