38. Toblach-Cortina, Two Great Races in the Heart of the Dolomite

Mountain Range, Both on the Legendary Course from the Tour de Ski

The Toblach and Cortina D’Ampezzo regions in the Italian Dolomites mountain range have been

designated as part of l’UNESCO’s world heritage. These two places are what cross country skiers

dream about.

The weekend of the 7th and 8th of February in 2015 is reserved for those who want to make sure

that they participate in the legendary course along the old train tracks that have been used by

the Tour de Ski. These go between Cortina d’Ampezzo and Toblach. On Saturday, February 7th,

there is a skating (freestyle) race that lasts 30 kilometers. On Sunday, in the other direction, there

is a 42-kilometer classic race. This is a unique occasion, allowing you to glide along a mythical

course. Of course there will be thousands of spectators along the route all the way to the Nor-

dic Center in Toblach on Saturday and to Cortina d’Ampezzo Village on Sunday. We guarantee

that you will never forget this experience!

And, as a little extra frosting on the cake, you will be able to discover the superb countryside,

including the famous “Dreizinnens” and their panoramic views. It doesn’t matter whether you

choose the Saturday skating race or the Sunday classic race, you will never regret the experi-

ence.

You will arrange your individual travel to Toblach. Once there you will be able to settle down in

your hotel room and then partake in the first cocktail hour followed by a full explanation about

how the rest of your trip will unfold. And, of course, there is dinner.

Thursday, February 5, 2015

A hearty breakfast and then we will go take a look at a part of the race course so that you can

enjoy part of it without being under the stress of racing. At the same time, you will be able to

benefit from the spectacular views along the old railroad tracks between Toblach and Cortina

d’Ampezzo. We will stop for lunch at noon and come back in the afternoon. Then there will be

time to prepare your skis. You can take a sauna now if you want. We will all be eating together

that evening.

Friday, February 6, 2015

Another hearty breakfast and then a free day for whatever you want to do. You can work on

your skis, try out your equipment, but you must go to the registration site in the stadium, which

you will find at the beginning of Toblach, There you will find a building where you can pick up

your race bibs. Actually, you will only have to walk a little ways because your hotel is very close

to the stadium. Rest is in order for the remainder of the day, followed by a meeting to explain

what is going to happen on Saturday.

Saturday, February 7, 2015—the 30-km Freestyle (Skating) Race

The start is at Fiames, which is 2 miles above Cortina Village. You will finish at the Toblach sta-

dium. Of course we have organized your transportation from the hotel to the start and it is in-

cluded in the price. We can’t stress enough how fantastic the race course is and how excited

you will be when you arrive at the finish in Toblach. Then you will have time to walk to the hotel

for a much needed rest.

Sunday, February 8, 2015—42 km Classic Race

A hearty breakfast again. Note, though, that you have to pack everything from your room be-

fore you leave for the race. Don’t despair, though, you will be able to use the Wellness Center

after the race to lie down and rest before your trip home. The start of the race is at 10 a.m. The

42-km classic race starts with a 10-km circle around Toblach before it takes the opposite direc-

tion from Sunday’s race in order to arrive at the center of Cortina d’Ampezzo.

This course is perhaps one of the most beautiful in all of southern Europe. The ambiance is magi-

cal, going through tunnels and hills at about a 3 percent grade through the first 15 km. Then for

the next 15 km there is a 3 percent grade downhill with a spectacular arrival in the center of a

pedestrian-only street—a spectacle that will leave no one indifferent.

Signing Up for the Two Races:

The price of your registration varies depending on when you sign up. We can, of course, take

care of this task.

Hotel Laurin*** at Toblach

This hotel is ideally located a few steps from the Toblach

Stadium where those of you who race on Sunday will finish

your race.

You will be treated like someone in the family in this hotel.

It has a sauna as well as a spa and you can use them

whenever you want. The cooking style is tirolienne. You

will find a comfortable atmosphere in both the restaurant

and the bar. If you come by car, you can park for free in

front of the hotel. And your Internet access is free, also.

throughout your stay and during the race. Tanja and

Daniel know the region perfectly because they have

spent much time there.

Getting to the Event

By Car:

You can take the Brenner motorway to Brixen in the Pustertal Valley all the way to Toblach or

you can come by the Felbertauern route as far as Lienz in eastern Tirol. Then you go to Innichen

and then from there you get to the Pustertal Valley to Toblach.

By Train:

From Innsbrück, you pass through Brenner to Franzensfeste. From there you take the Pustertal

train by going through Bruneck through the Hochpustertal Valley to the Toblach train station.

By Plane:

The closest airport is in Treviso or Venice (Marco Polo Airport). We can take care of the transfer

from either airport to the hotel.

Parking:

You can park in front of the hotel or nearby without payment.
