Finally! Winter is over and we are officially in season. This is NOT a dress rehearsal. Woo Hoo!!! And just to state the obvious, we are smack dab in the middle of Spring Break and St. Patty’s Day is this Saturday. The St. Patty’s Pub Crawl in Port A starts out at the VFW at
noon, heads to the Gaff (12-12:50) then Lovett’s (1-1:50), Bernies (2-2:50),Wild Horse (3-3:50), Salty Dog (4-4:50) and ends back up at the V (5:00 ‘til the cows come home.) They have a couple of trailers they stick the pub crawlers on and I know at least one person, the driver, stays sober. It’s a hoot and anyone can jump in. Be sure to dress the part. Did I mention, there’s live music on every corner these days…at least in Port A. The Rockin’ Ricke jam at the Tarpon Ice House the other day was particularly happening. Dave “Bottlehead” Miller, freshly back from the jaws of death, showed up just to remind us that he’s to mean to die and can still carry one heck of a tune. Guitar picker extraordinaire, L. Leon Sands also showed up, along with a bunch of other great musicians (such as Chris Vandercoke on drums, Dan McLeod on guitar and Mr. Mo on everything else) and the show was on, baby! BTW, L. Leon told me about his new surf band, Aqua Vox, which is a sort of island super-group with Woody Ray Lawson and Carol Elliott. They have also enlisted a talented drummer from Aransas Pass, Andrew Blankenship. They’ll be doing stuff like Dick Dale, Safari’s, Ventures, Beach Boys and a bunch of 60’s Brit Pop (Kinks, Beatles, Hollies, T Rex). They’re rehearsing now and will bust out for the first time in May at the Rockport Food and Wine Festival. This sounds like one cool group to me. Also, I caught another great, young band at the Ice House last week, Reba’s Naked Sister (Austin, TX). These boys showed up out of nowhere and floored us. They were half a dozen strong with guitars and mandolins and had a jumping high energy. I don’t know anything about them, but they were good and a lot of fun. I hope they wander back in. Also, my wunderkind little brother, Cody Angel, has been in town for Spring Break and played at the Wild Horse last week with Mike Guerra. I feel like my boy is growing up. It seems that going to school in west Texas suits him…he
sounded better (well rounded and confident) than I’ve ever heard him. He’ll be playing a couple more gigs (Back Porch on the 15th and Scuttlebutt’s on the 16th) before heading back to South Plains College in Levelland. The Ruben V show at the Porch last Saturday was
killer. Ruben has been recording recently with producer, Jim Gaines (Santana) and it shows. He’s definitely getting more in touch with his Latin roots. Ruben put on one scalding show! And finally, don’t forget about the Kydell’s this weekend at the Ice House. They’ll be playing all three nights. This band will absolutely floor you if you’re the kind of music fan that digs the Shoemaker Brothers. I guarantee it will be GREAT! But right now, time’s a wasting. Let’s roll…
Ray T Benefit March 24th…Lynda Coward, owner of the Flats Lounge,
has announced Saturday, March 24th as the date for the Ray T benefit. In case you didn’t know, Ray Tijerina was in one bad motorcycle accident with a drunk driver a few weeks ago and has been in the hospital ever since. They will have an auction and a fish fry. J.T. Coldfire, John Cortez and all of the City Crew band will be performing. I asked Ray to give me an update and he told me, “The last two weeks I have been getting a lot of mobility back to my body, but there have been some complications, the bone that protruded through my leg has been put back together but the skin is not healing right, where the bone moved round and is requiring more surgery to remove dead tissue. The broken ribs and punctured lungs are getting better but required another small surgery. I plan and hope to be out (of the hospital) by the benefit but God only knows.” I really want to encourage EVERYBODY to attend this benefit and help our brother out.
DO NOT MISS LIST
Emory QuinnEmory Quinn (San Antonio, TX) will play the
Back Porch tomorrow night, March 16th. This is the review I wrote on them around this time
last year. It should give you some insight into this band. They used it in their press kit, so I’m guessing I hit the nail on the head.
3C&T (3-31-2011): I walked into this show thinking this band was another cookie cutter version of the redundant “Texas Country” format that’s dominating the airwaves and young girl’s hearts these days. What I saw were some exceptionally talented young men with an endearing stage presence. The band consists of Nathan Emory Rigney on vocals, guitar, mandolin and fiddle, Clint Quinn Bracher on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, Case Bell on bass and vocals and Erik Frankson on drums. These guys are frat brothers from A&M that started making music together around 2007. They still have young shiny faces and a refreshing child like enthusiasm for playing music.
Although I was deeply impressed with the smooth yet passionate vocals of Clint Bracher, I felt the standout in this band was with the multi-instrumentation of Nathan Rigney. This young man was a monster. He flat roared on the many
stringed instruments that he played adding sweet leads on fiddle, mandolin and guitar. I’ve seldom heard such clean and tasty passages. Combined with the three part harmonies and “extra effort” bass lines of Case Bell, this band was a pleasure to watch.
Scott H. BiramScott H. Biram (Austin, TX)
will play the House of Rock on March 31. I want to recycle the review I did on him in 2010. I think it’s good and really gets to the core of this man. Enjoy!
3C&T (3-31-2010): I walked into this show knowing nothing of the man or his music. He was good enough to make it on to the HOR’s Songwriter Series and that was good enough for me. In a word: OH MY GOD! (OK, 3 words). If I hadn’t gone, I’d have missed one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I can’t help but gush here, Scott H. Biram isn’t just an act, he’s a crazed stream of pure energy whose guitar plays him. To steal a quote, “Biram is the kind of guy you don’t laugh
at all the way just in case he really is crazy. We all wanna be entertained, but nobody wants to get stabbed in the head with a screwdriver.” I can’t say when I’ve been more entertained at a show....or more nervous.
Biram is lucky to be alive, or at least he won’t seem to die. He had a head-on collision with an 18 wheeler going 75 miles per hour, and, in his own words, “broke every bone in his body”. Shortly after his accident, he took the stage at The Continental Club in Austin, in a wheel chair – I.V. still dangling from his arm and 2 broken legs, a broken foot, a broken arm and 1 foot less of his lower intestine. I guess that explains a lot.
His delivery at the HOR was anything but pretty. Biram came out spitting and snarling as he attacked his 1959 Gibson and stomped on his floor mic, at times singing, at times yodeling, at time just gurgling with eyes rolled back and venom spewing. You get the feeling
that Scott H. Biram has made a pact with the devil and the devil put him on retainer. He faced his demons, though, with songs such as Been Down Too Long, Blood Sweat and Murder, Wreck My Car and Truck Driver. His style is something like a Mississippi juke shouter at a punk rock party...it’s a hillbilly country slant with a hard rock attitude. He goes to the place where natural talent and genius start wagging the dog. When you go see this guy, don’t get to close and try to avoid eye contact...a
pillar of salt comes to mind. Scott H. Biram is an amazing artist and I highly recommend seeing him (at a safe distance). I guarantee you won’t forget it.
And that’s the truth!
