Island Moon May 06, 2011 B 8 Galloway are the kind you will always recognize. He has his own pitch and it stands out. The guitarist, Mi- chael Carpenter, was exceptionally clean and at one point played his guitar with a fiddle bow. Throw in the mighty strong rhythm section of Hal Jon Vorpahl (bass) and Josh Greco (drums) and this band screams power- ful. They are sort of like Little Feat meets Raul Malo. But, that’s not the best part. On this night they played three sets. The first and last sets were all original songs from their two CD’s (Some- thing They Ain’t and Pick Your Heads Up) and the second set was the songs from the Red Headed Stranger album done in its entirety and in sequence. They didn’t mimic Willie Nelson; they played renditions that were true to the recording but still artistically allowing. Galloway sang the way he sings and it was respectful and moving. He didn’t talk between songs and yielded a dramatic tribute that was all class. Galloway is very good. This band is the real thing and deserves to be put on your DO NOT MISS LIST. They’ll be back to the Porch sometime this summer. DO NOT MISS LIST 2 nd Annual Tarpon Music Bash It’s a tradition now. The 2 nd Annual Tarpon Music Bash (May 20- 22) hosted by the happiest singer-songwriter on the planet, Al Barlow (San Marcos, TX) will bring several boat loads of Texas Hill Country artists to the Tarpon Ice House in Port A. The majority of the talent hails from Wimberley, Gruene, San Marcos and New Braunfels with a few from Corpus Christi. Barlow is a columnist for Lone Star Music Magazine and hosts one of the most successful open mics around, every Sunday at the Phoenix Café in downtown New Braunfels. He has a crop of witty songs that are both hi- larious and charming. Many acclaimed singer-songwrit- ers in the area regularly grace his stage (Terri Hendrix, Susan Gibson, etc), as well as multitudes of aspiring ones who all seem to gravitate naturally to that part of By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] Three Chords and the Truth In case anybody is counting, this is my 50 th music column in 100 straight weeks…whatever. I want to welcome the Felder Art Gallery and Miss K’s Catering to the 3C&T happy fam- ily of sponsors. Both Robby Felder and Kathryn Bain- bridge are good people and are good at what they do. Plus, I know they are both big live music fans. They’re next door to each other in the Tower Center in Port A and compliment one another well…hey, you can’t view fine art on an empty stomach. Also, I want to give a shout out to our buddy, Bo Por- ter (Austin, TX) who recently dumped his Harley on the way to a gig in Fredericksburg and got lucky with only a couple of broken ribs and bruises from head to toe. Though he doesn’t usually wear one, Bo decided to put on a helmet that day, in respect for a friend who had re- cently died of head injuries in a scooter crash. It proba- bly saved his life. And, don’t call him No Show Bo. Hurt- ing as he was, he dusted himself off and made the gig that night and the next three nights afterwards. Good on you, Bo. We’re glad you’re still sucking air and playing that guitar. Festival season is heating up and, as usual, I’ve got plenty to tell you about. The 2 nd Annual Tarpon Music Bash and the 28 th Annual Songwriters Showcase (both in Port A) are coming up quickly. I’ll preview both of them in this issue. And on the near horizon, The Rockport Festival of Wine and Music, featuring the great Joe Ely, Lighter Ray, Westbound, Scott Tay- lor and Mike Milligan with Cody An- gel is on May 28-29, and the Rockport Music Festival—featuring the fabu- lous line-up of Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, Willis Allan Ramsey, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Delbert Mc- Clinton, Gary P. Nunn, Cory Mor- row, Malford Milligan and Casey Donahew—is on June 9-11. I’ll preview those two events in the next is- sue. And, don’t forget, Sunday, May 8 th is MOTHER’S DAY! Carol Elliott will be performing a special Moth- er’s Day show at Hooks B-B-Q around noon. Plus, an act I’ve recently become interested in, Lighter Ray, will be performing at the Coastal Bend Police Officer’s Associa- tion Chili Cook-off in Robert’s Point Park in Port A on May 7 th . Check out their song, Going to Brownsville, on You Tube. Also, Austin’s Godfather of the Blues, W.C. Clark, will be at the Back Porch on the 21 st . If you can’t find a live music show in here that doesn’t put a little tingle in that special place… then you just ain’t looking. But, right now time’s a wasting…let’s roll! Uncle Lucius The Back Porch continues to hit home runs. Uncle Lu- cius (Austin, TX) played there on April 23 rd and pretty much blew me away. I had heard them last year when they played the Porch and was fairly impressed, but this time they had a new edge. They’ve added a keyboard/ accordion player, Jon Grossman, since I last saw them and these boys are really sounding good. And looking good…Grossman’s afro is wild. They also gravitate to Terlingua for their an- nual music bash each October and to the Kerrville Folk Festival in late May and early June. And this amazing circle of musicians have now declared the Tarpon Ice House in Port A as home each year on the weekend be- fore Memorial Day. Last year over 30 musicians and doz- ens of fans made the trek from central Texas for three days of music and christened this venue their new haven. The confirmed line-up for the music bash this years con- sists of Scott & Smiley, Tim Dubois, Phillip Stevens, Ashley Monical, Ken Watts, Paul McLaughlin, For- rest Wayne Allen, Daniel Thomas Phipps, Alex Whit- more, Larry Martin Sweeney, the Cofield Brothers and from Corpus Pake Rossi, Ty Dietz and Johnson Grass. The event will begin at 8 PM on Friday when the artists begin to arrive and play an impromptu jam hosted by lo- cal song-slinger Van Blize. On Saturday, the bash begins at noon and goes until the wee hours with a nonstop variety of talent. On Sunday, their will be a Gospel Brunch with more music into the afternoon. Admission is $5. 28 th Annual Songwriters Showcase Well…they moved it again. Held in the courtyard of the Tarpon Inn for the past 26 years, then in a con- do development on the edge of town last year, the 28 th Annual Songwrit- ers Showcase will now move to the main pavilion in Robert’s Point Park on Monday, May 23 rd at 7 PM. This family affair is sponsored by the Art Center for the Island and is a bring your own ice chest and picnic basket and listen to our local songwriters kind of casual event. Admission is $5. The line-up seldom changes from year to year even though the venue has started to. I’d love to see a home- grown rebellion take it back to the Tarpon Inn. That’s when it was a truly special event for Port A. The show- case was moved from the Inn because of T.A.B.C. li- censing conflicts with bringing your own booze in after Roosevelt’s opened. The unconfirmed list of performers this year will include: Marc Wiles, Norman Ray Leev- er, Cody Angel, J.D. Moore, Woody Ray Lawson, Stuart Michael Burns, Jared Clark, Ken Barnett, Kit Gutherz, Mike Williams, Rich Lockhart, Alma Squillante, Emily Dale, Randy Rivers and Preecher Williams.
