4-H LIVESTOCK JUDGING TEAM WILL BEGIN MEETING IN SEPTEMBER

The first meeting of the new year will be on Monday, September 23 at 6:30 pm at the Boone County Extension Office. New members are welcome!

Project club news

AEROSPACE CLUB Our next club meeting will be on Thursday, October 3 on the upper level of the Enrichment Center from 7:00-8:00 pm. There will not be a September meeting. We have been tracking the progress of companies working to create racing drones that race with artificial intelligence, void of human inter-vention. Come join us to see if AI can beat a human in a drone race on the big screen. We also have a new drone that members can code to make it fly strictly by code, just at a much slower pace. You can also still get some practice flying our indoor mi-cro drones with hand held controls as well. Please email us at [email protected] for details or any questions. New members are welcome year round!

ART & PHOTO CLUB Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 19 from 7:00-8:00 pm on the upper level of the Enrichment Center. September's theme is all about working with dramatic lighting and playing with shadows as we head back into fall and shorter days. Those who like art will make artwork and those who like photography can bring a camera or use ours to take photos. Art supplies will always be provided and you get to keep everything you make. This club is open to 4-H members ages 9-18, welcomes members any time of the year, and is free to participate in. Contact us at [email protected] for more information.

NIBBLES & SQUEAKS GUINEA PIG CLUB We will be having our Guinea Pig Show at our next meeting on Tuesday, September 3 from 6:00-7:00 pm at the Extension Office. Members will show their guinea pigs in different breed categories and have them compete in an agility course. Members are encouraged to invite friends and family to the show. Our club meets the first Tuesday of each month from 6:00-7:00 pm at the Extension Office. New members are always welcome! For questions or more information, please contact Ben or Christie at [email protected].

EXPLORING OUTDOORS CLUB Our next club meeting will be on Monday, September 16 at 6:30 pm at the Extension Office. Andrew Whittle from the Kentucky State and Wildlife Department will speak to us about trail and gun safety. For October, we will meet on the 7th and the 11th at 6:30 pm at the Extension Office. We will learn all about fly fishing. On the 11th, we will be having a special hands-on demo on fly fishing at a local pond. Attendance at the October 7 meeting is mandatory if you would like to participate in the October 11 meeting. We will have more information in next month’s newsletter. We will not meet in Novem-ber and December, but will pick back up on January 20, 2020. We hope to see you there!

WIGGLES AND WAGS DOG CLUB

Last month, we had our dog show at the Boone County Fair. Participants were Rory Shinkle

showing Bella, Audra Exterkamp showing Buster, Liz Chiasson showing Bruce, and Kyla Davis showing Lilo. We had a large crowd and all the participants did a great job! Our next meeting will

be on September 24 at 7:00 pm at the Extension Office. If you would like more information about our club, please contact Robin Huddleston at [email protected] or at 859-512-8505.

The first schools in the 13 colonies opened in the 17th century. The Boston Latin School was the first public school opened in the United States in 1635. To this day, it remains the nation’s oldest public school.

The tradition of giving apples to teachers originates from 16th century Denmark. Parents would pay the teachers with food because they didn't earn much money.

Approximately 480,000 school buses bring children back and forth to school each day across America.

Until the late 1800’s, only the wealthy got to attend school.

More than 14 billion pencils are made every year worldwide.

2.4% of children worldwide suffer from Didaskaleinophobia, which is the fear of going to school.

Teachers originally did not want pencils to have erasers because it was believed it would encourage children to make mistakes.

Boston started the first public high school in the U.S. in 1821.
