Dear State Land Use Commision, Members of the Land Use Commision, Roz Baker, State Senator, KanielaIng, Kihei State House Representative, Angus McKelvey, Lahaina State House of Representatives, andGovernor David Ige,
We are pleased to present you with this petition affirming this statement:
"On November 18th we need to let the Hawaii State Land Use Commission know that we reject theplan for an Olowalu town development and we reject the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) thatFrampton and Ward are presenting in order to build their 1700-home city at Olowalu. This city willincrease the West Maui population by over 4,000 residents and 3,000 more cars on an alreadyovercrowded infrastructure. In addition, marine biologists from around the world have said it willlikely kill our largest, oldest and extremely priceless coral reef ecosystem that house 700+ year old coralcolonies, endangered monk seals, sea turtles, fish, invertebrates and other endemic species.
What's at stake?• Our ocean, reef eco-system (700 year old kupuna coral), limu and fish• Existing roads and traffic are already horrible; imagine 3,000 more cars• Our streams and aquifers• Over-crowded schools
• Loss of prime agricultural land• Public access to the coastline• Traditional and customary use of Olowalu lands and waters
Please sign the petition and, if possible, show up to testify on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015 at 9:30 AM. Weonly have seven days to get the word out.
#saveolowalu facebook event to get instructions.https://www.facebook.conffevents/1517489378544315/"
Attached is a list of individuals who have added their names to this petition, as well as additional commentswritten by the petition signers themselves.

No development on Olowalu! One of Maui's last pristine reefs and essential for the health and vitality of ourisland ecosystem. As a marine biologist I am against any development in this area!

The development of Olowalu is probably the most inappropriate decision to make in consideration of thelacking infrastructure and destruction of the coral reef and sealife that feed off it. Too much as stake

Just moved to Colorado and I was born and raised in Lahaina. Graduated Lahainaluna 2013. I have spentmany beautiful days in Olowalu and I know the impact that allowing more homes and a town will do to thenative life that resides their. West Maui is already over developed and Olowalu is sacred ground. We shallforbid even the thought of developing more in Olowalu.

Please do a very comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement as the reef and cultural heritage at Olowaluis irreplaceable. Perhaps put it over to The Nature Conservancy or other programs to preserve the area andwork with those living there to reduce any current environmental impacts. More porta potties along the beachpark there would also help immensely. If a town were to be built please set in place laws to prevent issueswith runoff such as not requiring nonnative grass lawns or other non native plants that require pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer that would hurt the reef, not to forget any potential for waste water treatmentoverflows and leaks and storm drain runoff. We have the rest of our lives to stand by our actions -- let's take this slowly, seriously. Building up Olowalu isprobably inevitable one day in the future, and we only have one chance to do it right. The first steps ofconstruction are just as important as how the property is managed for the rest its life. Do the EIS properly. Dothis properly. What is the rush to destroy sacred land and ocean?

When will enough be enough. We are Hawai'i, let us please keep it like Hawai'i should be. What wouldHawai'i be if it is filled with foreigners and non Hawaiians in Hawaiian lands. What would Hawai'i be ifhotels are blocking our views what would Hawai'i be if our ocean is destroyed. People come to Hawai'i toexperience our culture and life style. If people come and realize we are becoming and looking like where theyjust came from we will have no tourist. Im 19 years old and i feel like i have a better view and idea forHawai'i than Profesional developers. It is only commen sense. If it is money you are seeking for justremember you will forever be looking for happiness &that money is the root to all evil. ALOHA& MAHALO

The coral reef ecosystem must be saved at all costs. You can't put a price on nature. Your islands are allprecious with their surrounding reefs. I have seen the Maui one so save it. Big business is trying to kill ourGreat Barrier Reef off Queensland. It takes 100's of years for the coral to grow.

Aloha I'm a full time resident with concerns of what the future Olawalu home development will bring. Also, what those major human impacts will have on our existing reefs and island. My concerns are with the negativeresults it will have on our environment due to large scale construction, sedimentation, sewage and chemicalpollution to our reefs and changes cause by creating further problems with our roads and air quality. I amagainst this development and reject the EIS due to the effects this will have on our island and reef in Olawalu.

The rate at which homes and condo buildings are being built has increased immensely in the past severalyears. The roads cannot handle as there are regular back ups causing hours of traffic for those who need tocommmute to the other side of the island. Tourists do not want to go on vacation and sit in traffic. The landand ecosystems are suffering and most of the properties are all bought by investors, not the people of Maui.

The purposed development would negatively effect the Nene birds who nest in Olowalu and the coral off ourshore. In order to have a sustainable furture we ned agricultural land to feed our people. The more we developour open land the more we pave away reasons for toursist to come here. The more we look like the mainlandthe less special our island becomes, which gives people less reason to come visit here.

Having lived on Maui for many years I know this area very well. I have surfed, snorkeled, and enjoyed thecoast in Olowalu. I also know how crowded the island is becoming and adding a large group of homes to thisarea is a very bad idea, more traffic, the road is already too busy, pollution going into the ocean, etc. ,etc.Enough already! Is money going to replace what is lost?

ANY and ALL development that is done at Olowalu will have a negative impact on both the reef and antraffic on the already congested Lahaina Pall highway. Go this route if you must, but understand that you arehelping to destroy the Maui we know and love.

Ohia Lehua AnibanKihei, HI 96753Nov 14, 2015
The development of this project will overburden an already overburdened roadway and strain already strainedtraffic conditions past the breaking point. I drove past Olowalu 2x a day on my work commute, like thousandsof others on Maui. The reef along Olowalu is one of the best remaining and a sewage treatment outfall wouldseverely threaten its survival and perhaps destroy it. Mahalo nui loa no kou kokua. I reject, along with my entire family, the plan for the Olowalu town development.Seriously, do you not get that this growth is overtaking Maui, the environment and so much more. I can't evenbelieve you would consider such a thing. Is it for money? There are other ways to create jobs and a thrivingeconomy. Look toward the future of food security for one. We are in no way secure now. We have work to dohere before we create more homes, cars, garbage and homeless people. Get a grip on the reality of what thefuture looks like if you do this. I vote NO. Development will destroy pristine ocean and prevent locals from their surf spot due toover population. This idea will only be fit the developers and not the residence of Maui

Absolutely! I not only want to sign the petition, I want to help with the protest! I live in Hawaii - not on Maui,on Kauai - but thoughtless, self-serving, unchecked growth is rampant on ALL our islands! It continues - eventhough the vast majority of the Islanders hate the ugly new developments - because no one wants to be thefirst to begin a petition or start a protest! There's too much at stake to sit idle - if we don't act, all the beauty ofthe islands will be gone forever & we will all look as built up & soulless as Honolulu! And what a HUGE lossthat would be ! ! Hawaiian sea turtle tumour (fibropapillomatosis) is a debilitating disease which tragically attacks the younganimals after they enter the ocean. It is scientifically linked to environmental pollution and stress. This isserious indicator of the poor state of Maui's ocean ecosystem. On top of coral bleaching and other changesvisible over last few decades. Need a forward thinking plan to protect and restore whole area - land and ocean-to native habitat. All other arguments also apply - infrastructure, traffic, ocean access, water, run off, etc. For
those that need a $$ reason, degredation of environment is not attractive to the tourists upon whom the wholeeconomy depends. Healthy turtles are- and they are affected by land use. Maui is slowly but surely killing thegoose that lays the golden egg. Use tourist tax revenue to invest in future and give the ocean a little time andspace to recover. Save Olowalu.

The city of Seattle's quality of life is being rapidly destroyed by over-development. Population has exceededsustainability of infrastructure. A similar situation threatens West Maui, by a much greater magnitude. Notonly will more automobiles mean more pollution of all sorts - noise and air- but the coral reef ecosystemlikely would be destroyed. Take a tip from what's occurring in Seattle and have the courage to go in theopposite direction. If you don't, you will lose what's called Paradise.

Aloha Members of the Land Use Commission, I Trisha Cabral live in Haiku, HI and oppose the proposedOlowalu town development because it will be a disaster for Maui. Traffic to Lahaina is already unbearableand there are thousands of homes yet to be built in other West Maui locations, the area is in a tsunamiinundation zone, there are fire threats nearly every year, and a majority of the homes will not be affordable tothe average local families here on Maui. This area will likely end up becoming a ghost town of vacationhomes like Lanniaupoko and Wailea. In addition, this development threatens the very existence of the lastwell developed coral reef on the island. You find 700+ year old kupuna coral colonies that seed adjacent reefs.Coral experts worldwide have told us that this development will exacerbate the affects global climate changeand ocean acidification cause. I ask you to stand with us and reject the Olowalu town development for thesake of future generations and a healthy thriving coral reef ecosystem. Mahalo,

They regulatethe number of buildings that are allowed to be built within the Tahoe Basin as well as regulate such things as;Boat inspection for water clarity, Water run off filtration, species infestations, etc.

Olowalu is a magnificent area & home of native species. When I rived in Maui I enjoyed hiking, running andswimming in Olowalu. I also remember the traffic at that area. A development in Olowalu will just not workand will bring terrible traffic to an area that it's already experiencing this issues.

As a former long time resident of Olowalu, I have seen the detrimental impact on the environment (on and offshore) in the area, because of the increased amount of development activity. The infrastructure was neversufficiently developed prior to increased development and population. The magnitude being proposed for thisconsiderable housing development will likely further increase the kind of environmental pressures, that willultimately impact the quality of shore and off-shore life in the future.

We need to save ag lands for ag, preserve landscape and reef below. Maui is a special place and our economyis based on tourism. Traffic is already terrible. If we continue to destroy the the aina and reefs, people will notwant to spend their vacation here. Where will the water for this development come from? We do NOT needanother town on Maui, especially up slope from one of the best reefs in Hawaii. History has shown us thateven with best management practices, development up-slope from reefs leads to their decline.

One of the last pristine, easily accessible areas on West Maui that is use by locals and tourist alike. The reef atOlowalu is unique to any in Hawaii. Our reefs are currently suffering from extreme ocean temperatures. Toput any further stress on them could push them to the point of no return. Also, the plan for for their 1700home city doesw not realistically address affordable housing and our infrastructure is already pushed to it'slimit.

As a avid snorkeler and paddle boarder I love visiting the Olowalu reef. There is nowhere else like it on Maui, and we need to save this precious ecosystem so that our marine life can (hopefully) return one day. In additionthe land above the highway should be devoted to the cultivation of Kalo and other traditional crops. Much ofthe land should be put into conservation preventing future developments as well. We need to protect thisbeautiful and bountiful area. Thank you for your time.
