Brampton News... Marian Johnson 724-3437We heard the sad and shock-
ing news of the passing of Kandi (Strong) Hall Saturday of a mas-sive heart attack. Kandi had lived in the Brampton area during her growing up years. Sympathy is extended to her daughters, Brianna McLaen, Brittiany and Shayla Fiala, husband, Tyson Hall and son, Waylon and other members of her family. Kandi Ty-son and two year old son were making their home in Forman at the time of her death and Kandi worked at Four Seasons.
The Cogswell Gun Club is pre-paring for their annual Buffalo Supper on Sunday, February 18. Serving will begin at 4:30 p.m. and continue until food is gone or everyone is fed.
Marian Johnson accompanied Kathy Strutz to the rural Oakes home of Shirley and Chuck Strutz and Marcie Strutz, El Paso, TX. Kathy had prepared supper (spaghetti hot dish, warm french bread, jello salad) out to take. It was a good meal and social time winding up with cheese cake des-sert before Marian and Kathy left for home. It was a good evening with no wind and temperatures not bad.
A fishing derby was held on Kraft Slough February 3. Scott Matson, Fargo, drove down to take part. Grampa George Bish-off proclaims him an avid fisher-man and it paid off as the walleye were willing to help Scott place first, second and third with the size of his catch. A happy camper as he returned home with a lot of prizes for his catch.
Congratulations Scott. Sounds like you have enough fish for a good fish feed.
A couple of weeks before this successful fishing derby, Scott caught a monster of a fish on Lake Ashtabulla. The walleye was 31 inches long, had a girth of 19 inches and looked as if he was old enough for retirement. After a photo session and being measured the fish was returned to the lake to live out his life.
Jim and Deb Bosse were Tues-
day morning coffee guests at the Dick and Jill Johnson home. Kimm and Don Rust were Tues-day afternoon callers.
Phyllis and Harvey Dawson and Jennifer Watkins, Forman had supper at the Angry Beaver in Oakes, Saturday evening. The occasion was Jen’s birthday and Phyllis and Harvey took her out for supper to celebrate.
Betty Rust and Leo Rust both had the misfortune to catch the flu. Leo is still in a swing bed in Britton Hospital and is feelling pretty good after he has gotten over the flu. So good, he would appreciate and enjoy company. Betty is still recovering and has not been out of the house for over a week except to see her doctor. This flu is bad stuff.
Kathy and Tom Heimbuch left for Des Moines, IA, January 24, to spend time with daugh-ter Shelby Heimbuch and friend Tom Allgood. They helped them get settled in the house they had recently purchased. During the five days, they feasted at sev-eral Des Moines restaurants and met Tom’s mother and step dad. Kathy and Tom left for home and the flu hit Kathy on the way back. Took her a week to recover and feel somewhat back to normal.
Chuck Anderson, Rutland, visited Alan and Dolores Wittich Monday and gave them com-munion. They had coffee and a good visit, too.
Kathy Heimbuch spent the week of February 6 at the Chad and Monica Heimbuch home in Oakes. She was caring for grandchildren Kaia, Collins and Quinn while their parents spent a vacation time in Minneapolis. Saturday, Kathy and Tom, Josh, Kaia, Collins and Quinn had sup-per at the Cogswell cafe and on Sunday, enjoyed their buffet.
Erma and George Bishoff were coffee visitors at the Alan and Do-lores Wittich home Friday.
Jordon Heimbuch left for Hart-ford, Conn. Monday and will be attending meetings related to his job at Bobcat.
Phyllis Dawson drove to Lang-ford, SD to attend a basketball tourament. Her grandson, Cater Dawson, was a member of the Britton team. She went into Ab-erdeen to take care of some er-rands before leaving for home.
Dick and Jill Johnson drove to Lisbon to watch grandson, Coop-er Johnson, and Casselton team play Lisbon. Casselton went home as the victor.
The winter olympics held at Pyeong Chang, South Korea has been the big attraction on TV. The closing ceremony will be held February 25 and each day is full of exciting events.
I found this amusing little tid-bit in a publication recently (per-haps not everyone will think it is) When asked about finances, the reply was, “Not to brag about my finances, but my credit card com-pany calls me almost every day to tell me my balance is outstand-ing!!!”

This is good soup weather. With the cold, wind, wind chill, and snow, (have not had much YET), it is a necessity to warm the body after being out in the cold. I love my crock pot for pre-paring it. Don’t have to watch it-just let it cook away.
My most traumatic time this past week was losing my keys to the mail box and front door. I searched and searched- more than one time in each spot and, as a last resort, decided to look in the garbage. UCK!! But, I found them and I’m still trying to figure out how they got there. I do not think it was my doing. Do you suppose my apartment is haunt-ed and the ghost was having fun, and at whose expense??
Enough idle chatter. Bye now and have a good week.

Dear Rusty: My husband passed away in
2013 just a few days short of his 63rd birthday. I was 56 at the time and when I went into the So-cial Security office to notify them of his death I was told I would be able to get a partial draw when I turned 60. Two years after that I was told that I would never draw anything from his account as the rules had been changed, and since he had never drawn Social Security that his benefits were eliminated. I am 62 and intend to keep working but any informa-tion you have might be helpful.
Signed: Confused SurvivorDear Confused Survivor:
You’ve certainly been given some conflicting information, so I’ll try to clarify. If your husband had accumulated enough quar-ter credits to be eligible for So-cial Security, you are eligible for a survivor benefit even if your husband was not yet collecting Social Security (SS) benefits when he passed. To be eligible
for SS, your husband would have needed to work for about 10 years for an employer which participated in Social Security program (meaning, both your husband and his employer paid SS FICA payroll taxes on his earnings). Most U.S. employers participate in the Social Security program. However, if your hus-band worked his entire career as an employee of a state or lo-cal government which does not participate in SS, or if he worked for the Federal government un-der their “CSRS” program, or if he worked for any other entity which didn’t participate in Social Security, he may not have had enough SS credits to be eligible. But if he contributed to Social Security for at least 10 years and had at least 40 credits (can earn 4 per year) then he would have been eligible for SS, and you would be eligible for a survivor benefit from his record.
The rules haven’t changed for any of this. If your husband was at least eligible for SS (not nec-essarily collecting), you became eligible for a survivor benefit at age 60 although it would have been reduced by about 28.5% from what you would get at your full retirement age (FRA). You are still eligible for the survivor benefit but, if you take it now at age 62, it will still be reduced for claiming before your FRA, and since you are still working you’ll also be subject to Social Secu-rity’s earnings limit ($17,640 for 2019). If you exceed the earn-ings limit, SS will withhold from future benefits $1 for every $2 you are over the limit, which would mean you wouldn’t get benefits for some months until they recover what is due. If your current earnings are high, it may
not be prudent to claim early SS benefits even if you’re entitled to them. The earnings limit chang-es annually, is considerably higher (by 2.5 times) in the year you reach your FRA and goes away once your reach your full retirement age.
For your awareness, the sur-vivor benefit reaches the maxi-mum amount when you reach your full retirement age (but is reduced if you claim it earlier). You have the option to restrict your claim to survivor benefits only, and you may want to do this if your own SS benefit from your lifetime earnings record will be more at age 70 than your survivor benefit will be at your FRA. Your goal should be to col-lect the highest benefit possible for the rest of your life. If you so choose, you can collect your sur-vivor benefit first and delay your own SS benefit past your full re-tirement age, which would allow you to earn delayed retirement credits on your own benefit. That will increase it by 8% per year of delay, up to age 70 when your maximum Social Security retire-ment benefit will be reached, and at that time you would switch to the higher benefit.
