Date: Dear Here is information on how to do an “Idle Free” conservation service project at an elementary school. The project purpose is to encourage those picking up students to turn off vehicles if they will be waiting for more than thirty seconds. Keeping your school an idle free zone will help reduce air pollution in pickup zones, let the community know your school wants to reduce particulate matter and exhaust fumes, and sends a message that your students want to help keep the air clean by contributing to reducing smog pollution, a large source of Bay Area air pollution.

THE PLAN Contact Kellye French to talk about the project and receive the project packet.

Two Months: If a Pack project: Cubmaster to talk to Pack about the program. (Cub Scouts

meets once a month) If a Boy Scout project: Include local Webelos Den or a few Troop members to

support the project. Talk with the School Principal to introduce the program.

o Who will be the contact for the service project? o How many classroom envelopes are needed? o What is the average classroom size? o Who would be able to place the project envelope in each teacher in

box? o Can the envelopes be returned to the office for pick up? o Who is the contact for the school newsletter? o Can we post six posters around school?

Arrange with your school to be off on the Friday of your pledge week to be able to carry signs at student pick up.

Three weeks:

Send school e-newsletter announcement to be published. o Insert announcement here

Contact pizza company to secure pizzas.

Two Weeks:

 Distribute teacher letter in boxes.

One week:

Have school remind teachers about the program. Confirm pizzas.

Pledge Week

Wednesday Pick up pledges after school. Tally winning classroom. Send pledges to Idle Free Bay Area or enter them online. Call in pizza delivery. Make thank you notes for project contact and principal.

Friday School to announce winning classroom. In Class A uniform carry awareness signs at student pick up. Give project contact person and principal a thank you note each.

Post Pledge Week:

Send project announcement and photo to local newspaper and school district

o Insert announcement here Send winning classroom announcement to school e-newsletter. Thank

Date: Dear Principal Our troop would like to do a Boy Scout “Idle Free” service project at your school. The project purpose is to reduce air pollution by encouraging those picking up students to turn off vehicles if they will be waiting for more than thirty seconds. We hope to accomplish this awareness by distributing an “Idle Free” awareness pledge sheet that will be distributed to classroom folders to be taken home. We encourage parents to take the pledge by signing the form and returning it to school.

The classroom that receives the most pledges will receive a pizza party. We would also like to carry signs that promote idling awareness at the student pick up area on Friday of the pledge week in Boy Scout uniform. As part of our public awareness requirement, we will be distributing a service project article to the city or town, local newspaper, Spare the Air (a program of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District), your school district office advising them that your school accepted the idle free pledge. Can you please advise us on the following questions?

1. Who will be the contact for the service project? 2. How many classroom envelopes are needed? 3. What is the average classroom size? 4. Who would be able to place the project envelope in each teacher’s in-box? 5. Can the envelopes be returned to the office for pick up? 6. Who is the contact for the school newsletter? 7. Can we post six posters around school?

Please let us know if you are interested in permanent “Idle Free” signs being installed at pick up locations. Thank you, Scout Name: Unit Number: Phone Number: Email: Enclosures: Sample classroom envelope and project outline.

Boy Scout Service Project with Spare the Air

Take the pledge to be Idle Free!

When waiting more than 30 seconds at school, sports practice, drive-thrus, or anytime other than in traffic, I will turn my engine off to help spare the air!

----------------------------------------------------------Cut here and return pledge to school. --------------------------------------------------------

Dear School Name Parents and Guardians: The Idle Free campaign is being lead by Boy Scout troop as a conservation service project in partnership with the Contra Costa County Spare the Air Resource Team (a project of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District). The Idle Free Campaign is meant to educate students and parents to reduce idling vehicle pollution and the importance of clean air. Our school is a California State School of Character and the School Community with Heart, we believe the Idle Free Campaign incorporates many of the character traits we try to instill in the students who attend our school. Respect for the environment in the air we all share, responsibility to one’s community, caring about each other’s health, all tie in well with our campus mission and the social/emotional learning that is an important part of a well-rounded education. The 30 Second Rule is a simple and effective step we can all do while picking up or dropping off children at school to reduce air pollution in our community. We ask for your participation with the following: Turn off your engine if you will be waiting for more than thirty seconds to pick up your child after school or from school activities (safety and weather permitting, of course). Sincerely, School Name Principal
